Iman had the best line in the movie, about the testicles being arranged differently by species. It's a line I've used with success many times. As for Spock's brutal forced mind-meld on that woman o nthe bridge, a Vulcan would not have done such mind-fucking and it was offensive to traditional Star Trek fans.

One thing I love about this movie is that it feels kind of like a newer episode of TOS. You've got a diplomatic mission going wrong, Kirk and Bones stuck on an alien planet, Spock in command trying to save them, a mind meld, a story based on current events at the time, and the philosophy of making peace with your enemies , plus an evil Captain Kirk! All elements from the original series, and very appropriate for the final movie.

You're so negative now, right from the start. You can see Alex just shake his head all through it, not even giving it a chance. Where's the joy that you guys used to have? This sucks. It's sad to see. I hope you find a way to stop being so hypercritical and just enjoy Star Trek as a fan.

I'd be surprised if Alex rates this higher than ST: V. He at least seemed entertained during that film. I'm hoping he rates it better than ST: VI 🤞

I really love the respect that you guys have given Star Trek, that said I am stunned that you guys are disappointed by the film. We all loved it when it first came out - then again the story was also timely with Chernobyl and the wall coming down being recent events

The director’s cut is better. Valaris was originally written to be Saavik which I think would have been better/more impactful.

I am sad that you guys didn't enjoy it or didn't like as much as you would've hoped for for the final movie of TOS cast. I watched this in the theater back in 1991...my excitement for this film had built since I had watched all previous movies & maybe I missed on some of the criticism that were made about this final movie. But ya for what it was back then, I personally enjoyed the movie and was quite moved at the ending(2nd star to the right & straight on till morning bit)...Not everyone is gonna like films or they're gonna enjoy it very well. It's still interesting to me to see people's opinions and have them share it with eachother.

None of the Star Trek movies are really good Star Trek stories, except for Motion Picture, because that’s literally an episode stretched to movie length. They’re often fine as generic action or scifi movies but as Star Trek content, to me they don’t have the ethos. There is too much running around and blowing things up. I prefer calm adults in a soundstage conference room discussing moral and ethical consequences. Yeah, there might occasionally be a little fight or some minor action, but it should never be the focus of the story. That’s not Star Trek-y to me. And as I posted before I don’t recognize Kirk in this movie as being the same guy in the series.

All the movies from TWOK forward are very self referential, being about age and mortality and the whole living legend kind of thing. I agree with that but I love them all the same. TUC is the ultimate passing the torch movie too, like the final hand off to TNG after its rough start and almost like saying, "It's ok, we're done now, go and enjoy all the new stories to follow!"

I mean, there was plenty of running around and blowing things up in TOS. In some ways, The Search for Spock captures the spirit of a Trek episode more than even The Motion Picture did: we have Kirk defying orders, Klingons serving as Cold War villains, a phony-looking alien planet soundstage, and a climax full of Shatner-fu. That's not all Star Trek is--the ideas are important--but that is a significant portion of what Star Trek is. The Changeling and A Private Little War are equally Star Trek. Now, The Undiscovered Country . . . I can see the argument that it falls short as Star Trek.

Wasn't until today that I realized the two crewmen who she told to "get to work" were the two crewman who shot up the Klingon Ship. Didn't piece that together until like 15 years later in this reaction.

It's my favorite of the TOS movies. It's the first Star Trek movie I can remember seeing ads for its release, though I was 6 at the time and didn't go see it in theaters. After a good deal of time liking this one, and then learning about Chernobyl and the fall of the USSR, it clicked for me what this movie was all about. It's a powerful statement from a critical time in modern history. Yes, I do think that the crew's sendoff could have been a little more...dedicated, rather than incidental; this plot could have happened whether the TOS crew was retiring or not. But when you get down to it, the relatively peaceful state of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants which we so easily take for granted in TNG is begun here, with this story.

They didn't like the character and I think David's incorporation in Kirk canon is a big part of what killed TWOK for them. but yeah I'm surprised they didn't edit that scene out, I'm sure some Patreons who saw this earlier must have said that's not such a good look!

TNG season 1 is still Star Trek so it's good by default. When people say TNG Season 1 is 'bad' its only bad by comparison to other Star Trek. TNG got so much better as it went on that when ranking the seasons of the same show, the first season stands out like a sore thumb. But this is how it is with most shows - the first season, they're finding their footing. The actors gradually get better, the writing gets better, the effects get better, on and on.

The Melville quotations in Wrath of Khan were at least from a single work and connected to the story. The Shakespeare quotes in this movie are just a random selection of Shakespeare’s greatest hits-Hamlet, Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, … - with no thematic relevance or consistency.

There was a saying in the 90's. star trek even movies are good, odd numbered movies are crap. This is one of my 3 favourite star trek movies (the others being Wrath of Khan & First Contact). The title The Undiscovered Country was almost used on several of the previous movies. Michael Dorn's character is apparently Worf's grandfather. At the time this movie came out when the fall of the Berlin Wall & Climate Change were in the news a lot.

I love some folks are getting bent out of shape over a very fair take. Not everyone is blinded bu nostalgia. For Alex and Josh there is almost zero nostalgia, they didn't have to wait at all, they have have been gorging at the teat of Trek with no respite. I love the supporting cast of this whole film though, and it is probably one of the first times when I really started remembering actors from other things and recognizing them. Folks like David Warner and Christopher Plummer who were staples in my consumption of media for so long that I literally grew up them. Not to mention the weird little cameos like Christian Slater and Kim Catrall. Catrall as a Vulcan was a problem for teenage me. Fun movie, not perfect b any means, but really cool.

Josh asked about there being a doctor on the Klingon Chancellor's ship. Chang replies that we did before this disgrace. Btw, Gorkon is played by David Warner, who was the Earth ambassador on Nimbus 3 in the previous film. Also, the Federation President is Kirkwood Smith, also under a lot of makeup. Smith is Red on That 70s Show and the main villian in Robocop. Edit...I see you recognized Red Foreman's voice...it is quite distinct!...😂😅😊
