Great episode! I’m glad they did a follow up after the 2 parter showing us that Picard isn’t ok and back to normal right away.. he has a lot to deal with from what The Borg did to him.

One thing to keep in mind about Jack Crusher. He didn't KNOW that was going to be his first, and one and only video. He was PLANNING on doing more. So it wasn't going to be a "I'll never talk to you again" speech.

I think at this stage taking Kirk over Picard makes so much sense, and Picard is really great but I'd probably give the nod to Kirk at this point. But you've just reached the defining event for Picard that shapes everything that makes him my favorite in the end. (For some real joyful silliness though read William Shatner's books with Kirk/Picard teamups. They are so stupid, but SO much fun! But you have to wait until you're finished with TNG - show and movies - before you read them.)

Regarding the notion of episodic television vs continuity, The Next Generation has through Season 3 hit "must see TV" status in America, England and Germany, with multiple stations showing both TNG and TOS reruns , turning Trek into something of a cultural phenomenon for about a decade . And through the letters fan letters sent to the studio, and meeting fans at Trek conventions -- the writers built a steady understanding that people did actually retain elements from previous episodes and even years, and fans asked if those things could / would show up in the future . Thus both Worf's arc , Data's arc, and the Borg arc represented overarching story lines that went beyond the villain of the week / season , that was usual in tv until that time . The next TV series (Deep Space 9) actually went for broke and seasons 3-7 were pretty much a continuous story, with standalone episodes becoming the minority as those seasons progressed .

Spoilers ahead for anyone that hasn't watched the TNG movies. That final scene with Renee just hits different after watching Generations.

They did the same bit in Enterprise season 4 (where they also used the sword through the planet logo) for a 2 episode arc and in the second season of Star Trek Discovery (for a multi epioade run) Both very good

This episode, character, continuity, world building. All awesome! HOWEVER....this episode also hits one of my serious nitpicks of TNG, they cannot do family drama without it ending in a fist fight, in our supposedly utopian future. No spoilers, but DS9 fixes this and has real family drama.

This is an episode that I don’t revisit often, but every time I end up watching it, I’m reminded of how great it actually is.

I believe the second number of the star date is the season.
