One of my favorite points is that Aang defeated the Firelord not as the Avatar, but as the last airbender. The air nomads were decimated by Sozin's comet last time. Aang's duty as the Avatar means he must kill the Firelord, but his duty as the last airbender is to keep his culture alive. His act of sparing the Firelord was a beautiful representation of using the culture that was wiped out by the last Firelord to defeat the current one.

The past avatars all told Aang that it wasn’t about him. But they didn’t understand that it was never about him, it was about his people. He is the last of them, he couldn’t betray them. being the avatar is what gave him the power to bring balance, but being the last airbender is how he did it.

Katara actually NOT bloodbending is one of the main reasons of why I love this series finale so much. She cried when she realized she learned it from Hama and she only used it once after. The thought of bloodbending is so abhorrent, so inherently wrong to her, that when she faced bodily harm and even possible death, she resorted to her wits. She acted very much like Sokka in that moment, who always, as a non-bender, had to outsmart his opponents, rather than simply overpower them. Sokka is often treated as more of a comedic relief, rather than a serious character, but Katara‘s fight against Azula proves, how important he is to the whole Gaang.

I never really saw her as being twisted by her father. He definitely favored her and she definitely knew she was the father’s favorite, for being a prodigy fire bender but also probably for being a psycho like her dad. In the flashbacks, Azula as a very young kid took pleasure in torturing people and animals. She was amused that her dad was ordered to kill her brother, she had no sympathy for her cousin dying or her uncle’s pain. She didn’t seem fazed by her mother disappearing. Azula May have been pushed further by her dad but she was 100% a sociopath from the get go.

My favorite part of Aang's conversations with the old Avatars is that none of them _ever_ said anything about killing the Firelord. That's just what Aang understood their advice to mean because he thought he was already on that path and didn't see another way. Aang does eventually follow all of their advice in the showdown against Ozai, but not in the way that Aang interpreted it during his spiritual meetings.

Tylee getting over her fear of “becoming part of a match set”. I don't think so, because during the North Pole bit they specifically didn't want to teach Katara how to fight with Water Bending because girls learn how to heal with their Water Bending. So healing is a Water Bending ability, that you can choose to learn or not, it's not an inherent ability of the person. If it was an inherent ability of the person then Katara would be able to use it regardless of what type of bender she was, which means there would've been Fire Bender healers, or Earth Bender healers, but there weren't.

Azula breaking down after losing is so cathartic in a sad sorta way. After all she's just a child, only 14 and basically grew up in a war with a warlord father raising her, she probably doesn't know what emotions are, let alone love since the only person capable of giving it to her (her mother) favored zuko. And that last bit of empathy from zuko and katara towards her just shows that they understood her mental state but doesn't excuse her behaviour which is just perfect. I always wondered how much positive change can azula bring to the world if she was raised in a more well adjusted household with all her raw capabilities and all.

exactly, I'm not defending Azula but at the end of the day she's a child, primally raised by a monster (Ozai) and with no one else. She knows even her mother thought she was a monster. Zuko thankfully was always filled with love by his mother and his uncle, Azula never had someone who really cared about her, since her powers started Ozai has seen her only as a weapon and no as his child.

Something I always loved about the final agni kai was the turning of the tables. Every other time Zuko and Azula fought, she was cool and calculated while he was fighting with wild emotion, which is why he always lost. The last time they fought, on top of the air ships, he had started to find his center and he fought her to a draw. This time, she's the loose cannon while he's able to stay focused. It's a really nice progression of the relationship between those two characters. By the end, I don't think Zuko hates his sister anymore, he just acknowledges that she needs to be stopped.

Katara’s healing ability is one that every water bender is capable of with training. The healing water they were talking about was from the spirit oasis in the northern water tribe which simply boosts the effects of the healing which is how Katara was able to revive Aang.

Something I find interesting about the spirit oasis water too is that Katara considered healing Zuko's scar with it before his betrayal, but of course uses it on Aang instead. Yet we see that he has the scar from Azula from season 3 and on, meaning it most likely wouldn't have worked on Zuko and then she wouldn't have had it for Aang.

@JorgensZelda But what I mean is that Katara was willing to use it to heal Zuko's scar. If she did that, it clearly wouldn't have done a thing because when we see her use it on Aang, his scar is still there and remains throughout the remainder of the series. All I mean to say is that I thought it was cool they slipped in a definitive answer to the question, "Could Katara heal Zuko's scar?" without explicitly stating it. Also, I don't think the healing properties of waterbending has any kind of priority system that was ever mentioned in the show.

I think it’s important that Katara didn’t bloodbend. As y’all pointed out, this episode was each of the characters finally becoming the person they’ve been striving toward the entire season. Katara is so kind, but she’s haunted by the death of her mother, which has led her to become controlling and full of rage. To become the person she’s truly meant to be, it was important that she let that rage and that control go. If she bloodbended, she wouldn’t have really grown as a person. She NEEDED to end this with dignity and mercy and kindness.

Azula's descent into madness is one of the best written villain arcs I've ever seen. She was already unstable, but losing the two people she saw as trusted advisors and realizing that their love for each other was greater than their fear for her absolutely wrecked any sense of self she had. To see her brother who she always had viewed as beneath her have teammates that valued him and appreciated him just further cemented her inferiority complex. In the end she was someone to be pitied. Also, funfact. If you want to see what happened to Zuko's mom they released a comic that details her story!
@RainCloudat3am
@RainCloudat3am Жыл бұрын
It's so important to remeber that Azula's story and ending is a tragic one. Her actions are evil but keep in mind who she was raised by an evil, abusive father who never truly cared for anyone, not even his children. From day 1 Azula was an incredibly talented firebender so the Firelord favored her over Zuko but never loved her, this drove Azula and Zuko further and further apart because the only way to win their father's "affection" was through their skill as firebenders and behaving just as cruelly as he did. She never had Iroh to help her and she believed her mother saw her as a monster unworthy of love. She was never able to spend time away from the Fire Nation, away from the royalty and propaganda, to see what the war was doing to the world and how it was affecting everyone (including the people in the Fire Nation). Her friends understandably turned their backs on her but Azula couldn't understand why, she was taught her whole life that the only way to keep people around you was through fear. If she was able to have any sort of support and guidance she could have had a similar story to Zuko. The creators of ATLA wanted to show Azula gradually becoming a better and more whole person and that constant she needed, the person who would never have given up on her, would have been Zuko. Azula is 14 at the time of the finale and Zuko is 15 or 16, they're just kids. [Edit]: Sorry, i also wanted to add that you can see Azula's mind start to shift when Mai and Ty Lee "betray" her because she thought they'd always stay with her out of fear but she was wrong, everything she's ever been taught was wrong. The pressure her father put on her was too much and now he's leaving her behind because he doesnt need her anymore and she knows this. Azula has no one and her mind is finally breaking under all of the pressure and everything she's had to do just to get her father's love only to be given the Firelord title and discarded because her father doesnt need either of them anymore. Big sad. Love the reaction guys, I truly hope yall have an amazing day and thank you so much for the content yall bring❤

This is it. The finale to a great show. Time to do one final analysis. Azula is honestly one of my favorites from Avatar. Her father teaches her that trust is a weakness. That love is for fools. Because he doesn't love his own family. He plots against his brother in his time of emotional grief, he plays a part in his father's death(implied), scars his own child, and then separates Azula from her mother by teaching her how to do things his way. Azula then goes to keep everyone at arms length. Except for Mai and Ty Lee. And even with them, she still employs some of the manipulation techniques that her father told her worked so well. After all, he's the Firelord. One of the most powerful and influential people alive. He is living proof that using people gets you what you want. That it makes you truly happy. So she does that. She tells herself that, "almost isn't good enough" whenever she slips up even a little bit. Everything has to be perfect. Because when his children are less than perfect, they get treated like Zuko. But Ozai could never treat Azula like Zuko. He obviously has trust in her. She takes down most of team Avatar, she nearly drills into Ba Sing Se, she almost takes out her uncle(a powerful thorn in the side of anyone he goes against), she infiltrated the impenetrable city and brought it down from the inside. "You were never even a player." She brought down the Avatar and had it not been for spiritual water, would've ended the cycle there and then. She has a small slip of emotion when talking about how her mother treated her and gives a small glimpse at her insecurities but quickly brushes it aside. She holds off Team Avatar even when she doesn't have her bending. Then it all falls apart during the boiling rock. Mai loves Zuko more than he fears her. But that's impossible. Ozai said fear was the only rational way. Then Ty Lee betrays her as well. An even further impossibility. It can't be happening. Then Ozai looks at all of the hard work she's done and casts her aside. He gives her a position and then immediately makes an even better one for himself and leaves her at home. After everything she's done, he treats her like Zuko. Azula then begins to panic. Because fear isn't working. Everyone is either leaving or she makes them leave because she's starting to fear that they'll inevitably betray her. To the point where she has to imagine her mother telling her that she LOVES her. Azula smashes the mirror as she realizes that her father left her with nothing. And it all culminates in that final battle. Where she makes mistakes that she would never have made. Slips up. And has a breakdown. Because she was supposed to have everything. She had fear. Zuko was supposed to have nothing. He had weakness. He had love. So why were the roles reversed? Why did her father abandon her? Why did her friends leave? All of that on the shoulders of a 14 year old girl. And it broke her. And that makes Azula's story so tragic to me.

As far as I know, there's a comic book that tells the story of how Zuko found his mother, by the information given by Ozai. Everybody goes with him, including Azula, who made a pact with the gang just because she wants to see her mother. And they found her, but she doesn't have the same face. Turns out that she made a pact with Ko the spirit that takes faces, to give her a new face and new memories to start from scratch. She had a new life, a new name, a husband and even a baby girl. When Zuko finds this out he reveals himself as her son, and then she decides to get her face and memories back, so family can be reunited. But Azula doesn´t believe this, she thinks her mother has been plotting against her all her life, and threatens to hurt Ursa, but Zuko manages to stop her. After all that Azula simply disappears and I really don´t know where did she ended up. And Zuko takes his mother and his new family to the Fire Nation, where she was banished. Then she decides to visit Ozai in jail to see him as what he really is, a really small man. She walks away of him, no longer afraid of Ozai.

Zuko and Azula’s fight is one of my favorite parts of that episode, and one of the things that makes it so amazing is that Zuko incorporates several bending techniques from the other nations into his fire bending. I love that Zuko eventually took his Uncle’s advice from Season 2: incorporating techniques and philosophies from all the elements to become a more well-rounded individual. Not waiting for the Avatar, alone, to embody that unity. It’s so cool that the expansion of Zuko’s worldview and his fire bending technique parallel each other in that way. I’m also glad that they didn’t play the final Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula as some flashy power-fantasy … Zuko just standing up to a bully and handing out comeuppance. Instead, with that background music and choreography, it’s beautiful and actually really SAD. While being a testament to Zuko’s increased mental balance, strength, and the support he found in friends like Katara… the scene doesn’t let us forget that these are two fighting siblings. They should be helping each other and working together, but their personalities and the people that raised them set each sibling on a path that can now only be resolved with violence. The whole fight is a tragedy. And we see at the end that Katara and Zuko feel that. They aren’t high-fiving or cracking jokes; they are serious and deeply affected Azula’s state. I appreciate that weight and it’s always made that plot conclusion even more satisfying for me than Aang’s.

There is a sequel! Please tell me you guys are going to do Legend of Korra... it doesn't have the reputation Last Airbender has but it is so fantastic! It stars the avatar directly after Aang - Korra, from the water tribe. The main characters are a little bit older, late teens and into early 20s, so the stories are a bit darker. And the world has had an industrial and technological boom after years of the peace and prosperity that Aang and Zuko brought. The animation style is crisp and beautiful. And not only does LoK introduce us to the very first Avatar, it also goes into how bending and the Avatar came to be. Oh, also, we do get to see scenes of Aang and the gang older, as well as meet the current, older versions of some of the gang - but I'm not going to spoil who. I've seen other reactors do Last Airbender but completely miss Legend of Korra, and that's really sad because its so good! And, its four seasons so it'll tide you guys over until the netflix release.

I remember watching ATLA on Netflix for the very first time when I was in middle school. I watched it alone because my family just don't share the same interests as me. Anyways, I remember feeling low-key embarrassed because I was "too old" to watch this show. I was literally 12. I was the same age as the Aang. I was definitely a part of the target demographic. I rewatched it as an adult and still loved it, so when I saw reaction videos become a thing on KZbin and came across grown adults reacting to and loving ATLA, it felt so good! Also ATLA was my gateway into anime. And now I'm in college learning Japanese to become a translator for anime and manga. I literally didn't think until now how much of a butterfly effect ATLA had on my life...

I know the fandom is split on Legend of Korra, but based on which moments of ATLA you 3 seemed most engaged in, and expressed you really enjoyed watching, I think you’d actually be in the demographic that likes LoK. It has some darker themes than ATLA, and showcases a lot of aspects of the world that weren’t explored in the original. I know LoK would be another long commitment, and if you did watch it for Bad Medicine, I wouldn’t be surprised if you took a break from the world for a while, but if you’re interested in coming back to it, I think it’d be right up your alley.

There is always a chance of redemption, this watered my eyes. for me the most beautiful thing part of the finale was the fight of Zuko with Azula, such a beautiful fight of two siblings that were manipulated by their father so much that it got to them fighting to death. It tells even more of how horrible their father was.

One of my favourite parts about the finale is that only Aang could remove someones bending because all the previous Avatars were willing to sacrifice their beliefs for the world. Aang would not sacrifice his beliefs making his spirit unbendable.... I loved your reactions and even tho it's not as good IMO I hope you react to the legend of Korra

Azula developed severe trust issues after her closest friends betrayed her. That's why she started banishing everyone coz they "can't be trusetd". Also if you really liket the series you might want to read the comics on your own time! There are a couple with different stories but there is also a sort of "4th book" where we finally get to know what happened to Zuko's mother and also find out what happened to Azula since she is not dead at the end of the series.

What makes the ending so satisfying, apart from Zuko’s incredible redemption arc, is that in the end, Aang didn’t have to sacrifice his morals in order to defeat the fire lord. Although he sought out wisdom from the past avatars, he still found his own way as Avatar Aang. I also love the brief details at the very end depicting Zuko’s growth in his character, especially his humility. While everyone cheers at his coronation, he immediately redirects the attention to Aang. Then, at the very end, he is shown serving everyone tea at his uncle’s tea shop - even though he is fire lord. A clear depiction that although he has gained the authority, he remains level headed and humble. Lastly, I think Iroh’s redemption is often overlooked (because we see the goodness in his character through the entire show and know he is a member of the white lotus). But his act in aiding to free Ba Sing Se redeems him in the eyes of the other nations, as well.

The fight between Zuko and Azula, with that somber music, is one of the best scenes in tv history. And you know what it reminds me of? The last scene of The Last of Us. Same kind of somber music playing in the midst of cataclysmic, final violence. Just beautifully written. All final battles should have this kind of feel.

The Last Agni Kai will always be my favourite fight in this whole show. In other shows, they would have put epic music in, but I absolutely love how here it's sad music. Music that remains people that yes it looks cool but in the end it's a 16-year-old brother and 14-year-old sister fighting each other almost to the death (I say almost because I think only Azula is going for the actual kill shots whereas Zuko is more trying to just knock her out because deep down he still cares for his sister). Aang vs Ozai is a close second for favourite fight scene for me

If you remember, bumi said that aang need to find a master of neutral Jin because it's waiting for the right time. Bumi did just that. He waited until his people had been evacuated and the eclipse to reclaim his city in a way that avoided unnecessary bloodshed.

Zuko has grown so much. He is following Iroh's advice to get inspiration from the other bending arts to strengthen his firebending : - during all the fight he stays on the same spot and blocks some of Azula's attacks like an earthbender - he uses great agility and jumps to avoid or deflect other attacks like an airbender - and aside from lightning redirection, he constantly adapts to Azula and switches back from attack to defense like a waterbender.

I have been looking forward to this video for a long time; I almost can't believe we're here! So happy to see you guys enjoy yourselves with this show. Few moments that always get me in this series, one of them is Iroh's forgiveness here with Zuko, I always shed a tear, and the Final Agni Kai. Not only is it badass, it's also extremely tragic... No one should have to fight their own family, let alone their sister. It's a heartbreaking moment as these two siblings were *supposed* to be compatible with each other, but fate demands that they duel to the death. The soundtrack does an excellent job denoting this.

i think that aang's not wanting to end the firelord's life is not just because he has been taught the principles of the air nomads, but because if he does this, it's truly the death of his culture and people. he's the last one living by their standards. avatar yang chen was able to make that choice and give him the advice that he's going to have to kill someone, but she was survived by others and didn't have to worry that there was no one left. his position is even more unique than any other avatar in the past.

The last 2 episodes of this series are some of the most amazing ending TV show episodes I can think of being made. The incredible artwork of the colours smashing together, and the final fights, Iroh straight up oneshotting Ba Sing Se's wall he spent years seiging. Also worth noting Aang WAS decisive, even when he didn't seem it. He KNEW he didn't want to kill Ozai, and even though he didn't know another way to resolve it he knew he couldn't kill him. The Lion Turtle teaching him how to bend the energy within themselves just confirmed that there is always another way. Really hope you guys do Korra next, its a really solid sequel to the series, and 3/4 of the seasons are just as good as the original series imo.

For Oak, the most important and high level nerve wrecking, nail-biting moment was clearly starting at 57:25 xD I recommend the comic books if you want to see more romance!! :P Also you can find out there what happened to Azula and soon the next comic book of "azula in the spirit temple" will come out! (september the 26th I think? )

So excited to see you guys finish this series! Such a great finale, they really stuck the landing with the show. For a long time I didn't like that the creators "coped out" by not having Aang kill Ozai but after a while it sunk in for me that Aang is the last living member of a ethnic group of pacifists who were victims of genocide. All the teachings of the Air Nomads that will be passed to future generations will come through him & I could understand why he'd feel like those teachings would be tainted by hypocrisy if he killed Ozai but still tried to pass on Air Nomad pacifism (we did see that Monk Gyatso killed in self-defense but Aang, as we saw, was capable of winning the fight without resorting to killing Ozai- even before he took away his bending)

Hahahaha Oak's anticipation of the kiss is priceless. This finale, I was in the living,a middle school kid absolutely fired up. I was mimicking the moves and everything. But of course, we all felt robbed when they didn't show what happened to Zuko's mother....then released it in the comics Also Mark Hamill has a good number of evil roles like The Joker in the animated Batman

1:19:55 the Chanting that plays when Aang meets the Lion turtle and that we hear here is actually a genuine Budhist chant. It says "Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo Shin Di" wich more or less translate as "I Bow to the Infinite Light". Just another layer of Detail this show has, that i think is quite interesting.

This show is unquestionably the greatest piece of western animation ever made. Easily on par with my personal favorite anime, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. A show that I would also love to see them watch. Edit:Just a clarification. Fast forward and now I’m going on 28 and I rewatch this show multiple times a year. It’s my ultimate comfort show and it’s something I always go back to. I love seeing newcomers fall in love with it; it’s one of my favorite ways to rewatch and BADD MEDICINE’s reactions didn’t disappoint. So glad I got to experience this journey (again) with you three. I know Oak wanted a redemption arc for Draco, so I hope he got great satisfaction from seeing Zuko’s entire arc. Zuko’s redemption is the blueprint and I’ve yet to see another fictional character with a similar arc compete in his league.
