Funny thing about Jimmy Fallon there. The jeep he is driving has a manual transmission. Jimmy living in the cities most all his life, and rarely ever driving, had no idea how to drive the jeep. There are actually extras pushing the jeep to move it along for him. The character Jimmy is playing, is Lt George Rice. This guy is a war hero, and was nominated for the Medal of Honor. Rice made about eight supply runs to the troops who were surrounded in Bastogne. He could have easily been captured at any time, but he made the runs anyway. He only stopped because he was eventually ordered to as the Germans closed in.

When Winters was promoted, he was basically put in command of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Regiment. Instead of running just E Company, he was running several full companies. He was the Executive officer of the Battalion, but when the 101st moved into the battle near Bastogne, he was basically the de facto commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion. Colonel Strayer, the actual commanding officer, was very busy working with Colonel Sink running the 506th regiment.

9 companies to be exact, remember in Episode 3, Perconte said “we’re the 5th of 9 companies…Able through Item”. Obviously the show focuses on Easy Company, but after his promotion he had to manage/lead 8 more companies so he wasn’t able to focus his full attention on Easy anymore

This is a great series but the one thing I don't like about Band of Brothers is that it gives the false impression that Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne Division single handedly fought the war or had it tougher than everyone else. The entire 101st Airborne Division plus elements of the 10th Armored Division held Bastonge. The 101st alone had three infantry regiments plus a glider Regiment each one with 9 companies including an "Easy Company" and at the onset of the siege of Bastonge of the 506th Regiment 1st Battalion which was Able, Baker and Charlie companies were extended the furthest out and at one point was cut off from the rest of the 101st. The Battle of The Bulge was the largest battle ever fought by the US Army or any branch of the US military in their history. Multiple divisions were involved in brutal combat with over 600,000 US Soldiers fighting in the battle all suffering just as much as the men you're seeing in this show. These men deserve to be honored but remember this show is a representation of a much larger effort that actually took place.

@@billrab1890 if you want to take that view, how about the 420,000 British troops lost in the war, the 8-10m Russian troops and 1m or so from other nations... I think they may have also contributed? The things depicted in the show happened to Easy company, there isn't anything false here bar some small changes here and there to help the story along. Easy was walking right into the Ardennes Offensive, this was Hitlers last major offensive on the western front which came to be known as Battle of the Bulge, because the Germans pushed the allied forces back far enough to create a bulge in the line. It was costly for the American forces but it also depleted quite a bit of Germanys remaining armies

So when Lt Heyliger was shot he and Captain Winters were I believe inspecting the checkpoints along the line. When they came to this checkpoint and the soldier yelled "Halt" Lt Heyliger froze because he couldn't remember the password, the best thing he could think of in that moment was "It's Moose" hoping the soldier would recognize him. He would survive his injuries and would later remark he still couldn't remember what the password was.

Winters obviously had no choice. My grandfather fought in Africa when US troops landed in Morocco in 1942, then Sicily, and finally France, until he was wounded In 1944 and pulled back from the front lines. Toward the end, when Hitler was drafting teenagers, my grandpa shot a 14 year old German kid who was charging at him with a bayonet. Haunted him forever, but if he didn’t make that shot, I wouldn’t be writing this.

As you saw, they were heading into the mouth of hell and did not know it, as they entered Bastogne. Yes, the allies eventually made their way through. But it gave Hitler the time needed to build up reserves for a final push that became known as the Battle Of The Buldge - which several top actors and many who served in WW2 were in the film named after the action. As well, check out The Best Years of Our Lives which tells the story of 3 soldiers returning home from war and the troubles each faced getting readjusted. As is seen in this series, Band Of Brothers, those psychological pains of war never leave people, even when they get home.

The SS was supposed to be "racially pure" and Poles were considered "inferior" by the nazis. Nobody in the SS would be Polish; it was a lie told to keep from being shot on the spot. SS troops were the fanatics of the German Army. They were hated by Allied troops so no quarter would be given to them. In addition, soldiers generally hate escorting prisoners to the rear especially because of all the walking involved. Killing prisoners has been one of the evils of war forever. Knowing that, Winters has Liebgott drop his ammo.

The SS, or Schutzstaffel, were the security force of the Nazi party, with the Waffen-SS forming a paramilitary wing. They were NOT part of the Wehrmacht, the German military, in any way and was in open competition with the Wehrmacht. Many of the old guard in the army resented the Waffen-SS, Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, would've preferred the SS replaced the Heer entirely. You are correct that Poles were not allowed in, though, and the two guys saying they were Polish was a blatant lie.

It's simply an aspect of war. Killing prisoners is sometimes necessitated by the situation. It was done by both sides and has been for all of humanity. It's not an 'evil' of war. War is not something noble or glorious, it involves the violent destruction of your enemies, the destruction of their equipment and infrastructure, and the conquest of their territory. Also, the primary reason for wanting the prisoners returned would be for intel they could provide.

The Germans barely fired back in that rear assault, firstly because of the surprise. After that, it becomes a death sentence to have all the squads out in the open. Soldiers that are lying or crouching behind cover have more accuracy and are way harder to hit. It's an unwinnable fight and you lose less men by making then run to next cover than to order them to all fire back, in that situation. The thing is they had no choice either way. A second German company joined the one being slaughtered, but by the time Easy company got reinforcement from the other companies in the battalion too and they were all in ideal positions, so their second company got quickly defeated too.

Fellas, I'm 60-years-old and my uncle fought with Patton at Bastogne. 101 st entire division was there, not just one company. Like 7500 or so men. So we're elements of the 10 armored and scattered other units. The entire Battle of the Bulge was a 60 mi long front and involved hundreds of thousands of men. Easy company wasn't the only unit surrounded at Bastogne and not the only ones w little weapons clothing or ammo. I love this series but too many people watching it who don't know World War II history would think that easy company won the war in Europe single-handed. And that's really far from the truth

This is my favorite episode because it's handled so well and covers a lot of ground. Nobody knows how Winters got that far out in front of everyone but he did it. This was a textbook assault on the German position and they did incredibly well in terms of casualties inflicted versus taken. Also, in the celebration with the British Airborne troops, Tom Hanks (who directed this episode) played a British paratrooper. "We're Airborne, Captain, we're supposed to be surrounded." is a great line too.

It could have easily been Winters shot when Moose was hit. If that would have happened, it would have changed Easy Company for the rest of the war. Jimmy Fallon could not drive a stick shift, so they pushed the jeep while he drove.

When an infantry unit is holding a position, the coordinates of the position are zeroed in on by friendly artillery. When the Germans got flanked, they started pulling back and called in that they were abandoning their positions and pulling back. That way, when the Americans occupy the position or pursue the retreating Germans, the German artillery will drop a strike right on top of them. Standard Infantry procedure. Also, the Waffen SS had a lot of volunteers from countries other than Germany. The SS typically was made up of volunteers, so Polish or not, those Polish SS soldiers were every bit as nasty as the German SS troops, and they would serve side by side.

Thank you for the information, we didn’t know that at all. The calling In artillery on retreating forces past positions is really affective especially if forces are pushing up aggressively. You guys are teaching us a bunch of history, we really do appreciate it!

Also, by 1944-45, the SS were not an all-volunteer service of Nazi fanatics, but were taking conscripts from Eastern Europe, mostly from the RAD (state labour service), and also navy and air force recruits were were redundant as those services had lost so many ships and aircraft. Additionally, because Hitler did not trust the army (Tom Cruise had just tried to bomb him in the July 1944 plot shown in the 2008 film 'Valkyrie'), so he was trying to build up the SS to eventually replace the army. For that reason, many army officers transferred to the SS to further their careers. Not that career development was a pimary concern in the middle of a war, but if you could gain promotion above company commander, you're statistically less likely to be killed on the front lines, the further up the command chain you go. By the end of the war, only about half of the SS officers on their register had an NSDAP (Nazi Party) membership number on their record, which shows how much it had changed from the original all-volunteer service from within the party as it had began in the 1930s.

You asked who the SS were... They were Nazi Germany's most notorious elite soldiers. They were also ideological fanatics and sworn to Hitler personally. they were considered to be some of the best troops on the Nazi side. And they were utterly brutal. In addition, they were often better trained and equipped than other military units. They were eventually charged with committing many war crimes against allied troops and ordinary civilians.

True at the start of the war, but as manpower shortages became a problem for Germany and after the July 1944 bomb plot to assassinate Hitler (per the 2008 Tom Cruise film 'Valkyrie'), Hitler distrusted the army and was trying to expand the SS to eventually replace them. So the SS were taking volunteers from other countries and conscripting from eastern Europe - mostly from the RAD (state labour service) in Romania and Bulgaria. Also, as the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine had more recruits in training than they had aircraft and ships for them to man, many such units were used as replacements for the SS by giving them new uniforms and telling them "you're in the SS now." Many army officers also transferred to the SS to further their careers. By the end of the war only half of the SS officers on the register had NSDAP (Nazi Party) membership numbers on their record, so even half of the SS were not necessarily 'Nazis'. The German battalion involved in the 5 October penetration of the Allied lines in the Easy 506th sector was a mixed battalion battlegroup called Kampfgruppe Hansmann under an SS officer from the XII.SS-Armeekorps, recently evacuated from the Kurland pocket in Estonia, on the Eastern Front. The companies consisted of survivors of numerous training units based in the Netherlands and thrown against the British Airborne at Arnhem the previous month. There was an SS training company, an artillery battery from 84.Infanterie-Division acting as infantry, a naval cadet basic training company, and a fallschirm (parachute) panzer company from the 'Hermann Göring' training regiment. The Easy Company trooper checked one uniform and assumed the whole battalion were SS.

i have always wondered Why the massive incompetence in the SS companies... were they just untrained?
@davemac1197
@davemac1197 3 ай бұрын
The answer in this specific instance of the 'crossroads' incident involving Easy/5056th PIR on 5 October 1944, is that the German battalion was not only not entirely SS and a mixed battalion battlegroup, but it was also composed of remnants of various training units that had fought the British Airborne at Arnhem the previous month. This battlegroup was known as Kampfgruppe Hansmann, after the name of the SS officer from XII.SS-Armeekorps (12th SS Army Corps) who commanded it. The constituent elements of the battalion were: a) a detachment from the XII.SS-Armeekorps signals battalion 112. b) a company from SS-Panzergrenadier training bataillon 4 (the training and replacement unit for 4.SS-Panzergrenadier-Division 'Polizei', so-called because they recruited from the German police). c) a battery from the army Artillerie-Regiment 184 (part of 84.Infanterie-Division) acting as infantry. d) a company from Schiffsstammabteilung 14 (a naval cadet basic training unit). e) a company from the Fallschirm (parachute) panzer training regiment 'Hermann Göring' (the training unit for the Luftwaffe's only panzer division that was fighting in Poland and had its training regiment in the Netherlands). All of the original units were battalions that were training units based in the Netherlands and sent up against the British Airborne as part of an ad hoc division called Division zbV von Tettau (zbV + for special deployment), and General Hans von Tettau was the operations officer for the WBN (armed forces command Netherlands). He was in charge of the defence line along the river Waal when MARKET GARDEN landed a British Airborne Division behind his line. These units were basically destroyed by the British during the airborne battle of Arnhem and the remnants had to be collected together into these mixed ad hoc battlegroups. Many of them were later formally incorporated into SS units by being given new uniforms and told "you're in the SS now!" After the airborne battle was over and the British 1st Airborne evacuated across the river Rijn on 26 September, the Germans reorganised for the static warfare that persisted over the Winter months. They brought in the XII.SS-Armeekorps evacuated from the Kurland peninsula in Estonia on the Eastern Front, and also a new division, the 363.Volksgrenadier-Division mentioned by Colonel Sink in one of the opening scenes of the episode. The XII.SS-Armeekorps was brought in to command both 363.VGD and Division von Tettau. On 5 October, the Germans planned a big counter-attack by II.SS-Panzerkorps in the estern sector of the 'island' between Arnhem and Nijmegen, aimed at retaking the Nijmegen bridges. It had 10.SS-Panzer, 9.Panzer (army not SS), and 116.Panzer-Divisions under command. In the west, there was a major attack by 363.VGD to support it, and from the north over the river a number of battalion-sized diversionary attacks. The Kampfgruppe Hansmann attack over the ferry crossing from Renkum was the diversionary attack that hit the Easy Company sector of the 506th's front. The hope was that all of these attacks would join up and evict all Allied forces from the Nijmegen 'island'. It failed, and the Allied lines either held, or quickly restored like the Easy/506th sector. Why were they incompetent? Most of them were just kids, and untrained or part-trained recruits. Just before MARKET GARDEN, in the first week of September 1944, the Germans had a crisis on the western front as it had collapsed entirely in France and the Allied armies were sweeping into Belgium, and it looked like the Netherlands would be liberated next within days, threatening the 'fatherland' itself. The Germans therefore implemented the 'Valkyrie' Plan to mobilise the Reserve Army and put training and replacement units into the front lines, using them to create a number of defence lines along the major rivers and canals in the Netherlands. The 'Valkyrie' Plan was first used by von Stauffenberg's July 1944 bomb plot to assassinate Hitler and take over the government in a coup, as shown in the 2008 Tom Cruise film Valkyrie, and that film does a good job of explaining how the Reserve Army worked.
