So it’s not addressed in the movie but basically the lore is that in that world San Francisco was devastated by that gigantic earthquake in 1906, but the city’s Japanese population banded together to help rebuild with their earthquake-resistant architecture, and the city was renamed to San Fransokyo to reflect the combining of Japanese and American culture.

Is that the lore? I could never find the info on that. The setting was so weird and left field to me. It was cool don't get me wrong, the mix of two cultures was beautifully presented, I just always wondered how San Fransokyo came to be.

Huh, Maybe its cause i've been Watching the Man in the High Castle at the time, but i've could have sworned that it was cause the USA got their arses kicked during the Pacific War and the West coast fell under Japanese Empire authority, before at some point in the 80's relinquishing the West coast back to the US as a sign of goodwill when the Empire was dismanteled in the 80's around when the Berlin Wall was destroyed and the URSS collapsed. Maybe thats just my headcannon.

One thing that’s been so hard to learn is that, at the end of the day, the thing that matters is the thing that helps. It’s not important whether it’s silly or dumb or corny(not that you necessarily meant it negatively) - it’s important if it helps. If it gives you hope. I’m so glad I’m not alone in loving that line. :)

One very minor detail that always amused me about this film: They always get excited for the wrong aspects of their inventions. Sure Baymax is a miracle of engineering and programming, but the scanner he uses to analyse Hiro at the start is world-changing. Just imagine the sheer resolution and accuracy required to identify an allergy at a glance, what marvels of micro and chemical engineering could you accomplish with such a device? Then there are the microbots, sure they're pretty cool, but that neurotransmitter? My god, imagine what you could achieve with it. All kinds of software engineering and graphics design could be achieved in a matter of minutes what normally takes weeks. Microbots are a good start but you could also have full fledged robotics accurately controlled remotely with that thing. and nobody seems to care.

In the comics, Big Hero 6 is essentially Japan’s answer to The Avengers, serving as the nation’s premier superhero team. The group was developed by the Japanese government to address threats within their borders, blending cutting-edge technology with superhuman abilities. Notably, Silver Samurai, an iconic mutant with strong ties to Wolverine, served as the team’s field leader. Interestingly, Big Hero 6 was originally set to debut in a volume of Alpha Flight, but due to scheduling conflicts, they instead made their first appearance in Sunfire and Big Hero 6 #1 (1998). Similarly, Alpha Flight is Canada’s counterpart to The Avengers, serving as the nation’s government-backed superhero team. Both Alpha Flight and Big Hero 6 were heavily inspired by the formation of The Avengers, who, in turn, were influenced by the groundbreaking success of the Fantastic Four. As Marvel’s first superhero team, the Fantastic Four kick-started the Age of Heroes, an era when superheroes began to emerge in large numbers, and laid the foundation for the Marvel Universe as we know it today. In the MCU, you haven’t seen the Fantastic Four yet because Marvel didn’t have the movie rights to them, as was also the case with the X-Men, and by extension, Alpha Flight, due to their close ties to the X-Men. However, as of 2024, Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) will finally introduce Marvel’s First Family to the MCU next year. In an ideal world, we might have seen the Fantastic Four during Phase 1 of the MCU if they had the rights. Marvel could have started the MCU with the Fantastic Four, followed by the X-Men, which might have shifted the early focus away from The Avengers. In a way, Marvel being limited in which characters they could use turned out to be a blessing for the Avengers, as it allowed them to take center stage and establish themselves as the cornerstone of the MCU. If you’re looking for an amazing Fantastic Four-style movie in the meantime, I highly recommend The Incredibles (2004). It’s heavily inspired by the Fantastic Four and Marvel comics from the 1960s and 1970s, perfectly capturing the spirit of a superhero family while celebrating the storytelling and aesthetic of that era. Interestingly, Michael Giacchino, who composed the iconic score for The Incredibles, is also composing the music for Fantastic Four: First Steps. The theme has already been revealed, and it’s nothing short of amazing.

Big Hero 6 was also Marvel's answer to the rise of Manga in the west. Manga was becoming super popular in America and Marvel decided to make a couple of series that were manga inspired, at least in art style, Big Hero 6 and the other was The Runaways. The latter of which is my favorite as it's a group of kids who are the kids of villains and they runaway in order to stop their villainous parents. It even got a tv show! In my honest opinion, both the comics and the tv show are really good.

My brother passed away when he was 7 years old. I never knew him and i honestly didn't know what it was like to lose someone that close. Then my sister found her first husband, he was amazing, funny, loved Batman and Bob Marley and would listen to me on everything whether he understood it fully or not. He passed away from cancer in 2016. and i don't think i had ever felt so lost. Big Hero 6 became a very important movie for me, not because i had a connection with it watching it with him. But because they did such an amazing job at reminding Hiro how connected he is to Tadashi, regardless of whether he is still there or not. I understood the anger Hiro had at Callahan, i didn't agree because i couldn't hurt anyone but i understand the hurt he must've felt at Tadashi's vain sacrifice. It's just... such a good movie. It really is.

Something kinda cute that relates to this movie, when my first son was about to be born, my wife requested an epidural. Two things about Callahan. As harsh as it is, when he said “that was HIS mistake” when Hiro said Tadashi went back in to save him…he wasn’t wrong. It WAS a mistake to haphazardly run into a burning building, instead of waiting for people who are actually trained and equipped to deal with situations like that. It’s just how Callahan worded it that was wrong. Second, and I’m certain this is apparent to some but I want to say it anyway, Callahan was so focused on revenge that he never even considered the possibility that his daughter might still be alive. He could have done all this; stealing the tech, reassemble the portal, all to venture into the other dimension to save his daughter. But no…

Imagine having that said in your face, and the result? The kid's entire grief, sadness, depression, all combined and transformed into pure hatred, and it was made manifest in Baymax. If it wasn't for his friends, Baymax would've killed the guy. I especially love the part where Baymax just wrecks pillars going straight to Callaghan. Back when this particular era of Disney movies was coming out, a lot of animation fans were gushing over how the company was challenging itself to do basically everything that was supposed to be impossible for 3D CGI. It's kinda funny that for Big Hero 6, it was "the fire and explosions", because, yes, they are very impressively rendered, but they have nowhere near as much presence in the film as the hair in Tangled, the ice in Frozen, the water in Moana, or the fur in Zootopia.

I worked at a video rental store and because Big Hero 6 was a popular family friendly movie, we played it on the TV in the store on repeat for weeks, but with no sound on. Because Baymax doesn’t have a mouth that moves, and his movements are so expressive, I just assumed he was a silent character. Your instincts served you well, Alicia. You picked up on both Callaghan and Krei being shady, albeit for different reasons. And you were right on the money about Callaghan setting the fire so he could steal the micro-bots. Also, the combination of San Francisco with Japanese elements really makes for a gorgeous city. I really appreciate how much you're picking up on and appreciating the nuances in this movie, Alicia. Thank you for sharing this reaction video with us, I thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch you enjoy one of my favorite animated movies alongside WALL-E. 😄

I remember when the first trailer came out I wasn’t convinced but the next few seemed promising and enough to convince me to watch it in theaters and and It earned a spot in my top of favorite animated movies. It also got a sequel series (I personally liked it, at least seasons 1 and 2) Marshmallow

Hey Alicia, I just want you to know I really appreciate the content you create. I have a hard time with joy/happiness and when I think about the times when I first experienced something-especially good movies-that revitalizes me. When I watch your content and see your reactions, the energy you bring reminds me of my own when I first experienced them. So thank you; thank you for helping me feel better, and reminding me of better times.

Speaking of crimminally underrated animated movies, you gotta watch Transformers One! It is PHENOMENAL! It's the first movie in a while that made me audiably gasp in the climax. You know exactly how the story has to go bc this is a Transformers movie and it still hits you like a ton of bricks. The story is so good it legit made me cry over animated robot people...

One thing I appreciate about the series that followed this movie, Callaghan never returns as a villain. We see him again in prison, and Hiro never really forgives him for what happened to Tadashi, but they never contrive a reason for him go back to being a bad guy.

Well, the city this movie is taking place in is called San Fransokyo. It was meant to blend the cultural differences, and strengths, of both Japan and the U.S. From Structures to Media. That's why the City looks like a blend of San Francisco and Tokyo and the animation appears to be a blend of Anime and Disney, among other things. Apparently BH6 is loosely based off of a Marvel comic series of the same name. You should also keep in mind that this movie was structured for a younger audience in mind. Where they don't have enough life experience to tell who may be the bad guy half way through the movie. So, realistically, the narrative makes sense when you take into account that it's written with Teenagers (and younger) in mind.

A small thing i have to say in defense of Krai. When the experiment problem came up he said it was within the parameters. It makes sense he would want to go ahead with the experiment. If the parameters were in dangerous territory it was the fault of the scientists calculating them.

Big Hero 6 is actually a lesser-known Marvel franchise! Disney decided to adapt it into a movie, which was a great call because people LOVED it! Because it's technically a Marvel movie, of course they had to have a mid-credits scene and have a Stan Lee cameo as Fred's dad (may he rest in peace.) There's a whole 2-D animated follow-up series, plus the Baymax! 3D animated shorts series where it's just Baymax doing his job as a robot nurse to everyone in San Fransokyo, aside from his superhero work.

Fun story, when my sister celebrated her 30th birthday she and her boyfriend had the theme ''I think I'm in the wrong place'' telling every one that the one with the best costume/reson on why they are in the wrong place would get a price. So I decided to go as Baymax, color me supriced when I walk in and find out that it was a wedding, yes my sister and her boyfriend was getting married right there, and boy was her (now Ex-husband) angry with me for being dressed as Baymax. I most give points to the priest, he keep being deadpann and neutral trough out the reception.

Baymax is a big marshmallow, isn't he? It's funny that Alicia was bouncing back and forth on who the villain was after calling it pretty instantly. I remember that up until the reveal, younger me believed it was going to end up being Tadashi that faked his death and got the microbots for one reason or another. I'm sure there's fanart of that AU out there somewhere.
