Not only does it cover real Pacific Islander mythology, but it's based on the real-world thousand year period where anthropological evidence suggests they completely stopped traveling between islands. They were voyagers, stopped for a full millennium, then began voyaging again, and nobody knows why.

The scene where the ocean parts & Te Kā comes racing across the seafloor towards Moana, only for her to see what she really is and help her break through the pain and rage is one of the most well-crafted and beautiful moments in animation, period. The same goes for the "I Am Moana" sequence.

Y’all have no idea how jazzed I was to see Maui on the big screen. I’m Māori so I grew up on stories of Maui fishing the sun to make the days longer, pulling up the island I live on etc etc. It would’ve been so much easier for Disney to just base it off of Hawaiian culture and stories since that’s what’s closest but they put in the hard work, consulting with almost every Polynesian nation to build the art, clothing and story for this film. To the point of using the noted connection between volcanos and fertile land that comes up a lot in our mythology as a core part of the story. For anyone who doesn’t know; volcanic soil is some of the most fertile soil in the world, it just needs to be activated with water, goddesses associated with volcanos often being seen as goddesses of fertility right along side the various plant goddesses as both are vital. This is also Auli’i Cravalho’s role, I’d say she more than knocked it out of the park.

A cool little detail in regards to the ocean helping her; it doesn't just do anything for her, but whenever she attempts to do something it helps her. For example, when Maui leaves her on his island the ocean doesn't help her until she starts to swim after him, then it carries her to the boat. This is mirrored in what she does at the beginning when she helps the baby sea turtle. She doesn't just pick it up and carries it to the water, but helps it as it crawls on its own by keeping the birds away and protecting it from the sun. Water
@chriskoloski32Ай бұрын
Maui is basically the demigod that did everything for the polynesian people. The coconuts, the air, the sun, fire. He took parts of these gifts from the gods or demons and gave them to humanity
@samuellatu3123Ай бұрын
He made coconuts because a eel raped his wife, moved clouds so he can see the land, slowed the sun because he hated fast mornings.
@TheNeilBlackАй бұрын
One thing I really like about this movie is that, while the ocean is helping Moana, it's only doing so by enabling her decisions. When Maui steals her boat the ocean doesn't help until she starts swimming after him. When Te Ka attacks the ocean doesn't help until Moana is determined to get through. And when Moana decides she's not the right person to do this, the ocean takes the heart from her, then returns it as soon as she changes her mind. It wants Moana to be making the decisions. A lot of people have wondered why the ocean didn't just take the heart back to Te Ka but the ocean's goal in all of this is to get Moana's people sailing again, and I think that's highlighted nicely in the way it supports Moana.

It's more like Disney desperately needed a movie to release that might do better in theaters than Wish did when it flopped last year. Disney Animation has had a rough road the last four or five years. Frozen 2 under-performed. Encanto, Raya, Strange World, and Wish all failed to make back their production/marketing budgets (we did have the whole COVID thing strangling Box Office numbers) - Moana was the last really successful theatrical release Disney Animation had (as amazing as Encanto is, it performed badly in theaters - only really finding an audience after KZbin reactors started flipping out about how amazing "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Surface Pressure" are - and Moana still out-performs Encanto on Disney+ and in merch sales). So, since they already had the series in development, with all the primary art design and 3D models made and rigged, they could convert the first few episodes of the series into a movie, sign on the Rock and Cravalo to come back and do the voices (instead of the replacements they were already using) and cobble together a script and some songs - and have feature length, releasable in theaters, movie made in record time, just under a year (when the normal production schedule for a Disney theatrical release is three to four years).

I'm a huge fan of a ttrpg called Scion, where you play the demigod children of the various gods from mythology, and this always felt like a Calling for a daughter of an ocean god. It's just so cute, but also really touching and powerful to me. And I also LOVED the scene of Moana in the caves, learning about her people's seafaring days. That echoing call and response drum bit was so powerful to me. I wish that sequence had gone on for much longer though. With Moana doing a whole drum cadence performance, with the spirits of her ancestors as accompanying drums, while the magic of the story unfolds on the cave walls around her. I also find it hilarious that in 'You're Welcome', Maui literally tells Moana that he's gonna take her boat and hardly any first time watchers pick up on it. Also also, WATER

everyone knows it was referencing Sebastian

its funny, i was never interested in watching moana, i always heard good things about it, and how pretty and colorful it was. but it never really gave me any reason to watch... and then i got a smart tv, and i needed something to watch on it to see how good the tv was, and someone recomended moana. so i said to my self, well why not? it was my first smart tv and all so i just went with it. boy was i blown away. im one of those peopel who genuinely dont care about visuals, but by god this is hands down the prettiest animated movie i have ever watch. the water quality was insane! and the music was PERFECTION. Lin-Manuel Miranda didnt just blew it out of the water, he blew it out of the planet, out of this galaxy! the man is a musical genius. to me, this is an easy 10/10 movie. i was so impressed by it, that, when my mother got hers, i HAD her watch it, and you bet i was there besides her watching it again. sufice it to say all her "im not much of an animation fan" did nothing to stop her from loving it. moana, to me, is THE BEST 3D ANIMATED MOVIE OF ALL TIME. and im an anime fan.

Obligatory codeword mention: Water 8:51 While the ocean will help her, and clearly likes her, that doesn't mean it's necessarily going to save her life. She still needs to do the work to complete her quest. 14:18 At this stage, Maui is very much the asshole jock who thinks he's the coolest guy on earth. 20:24 That's the giant monster snowman from Frozen. 21:01 Shiny is probably my favorite song in the movie. How Far I'll Go and We Know The Way are both great too, but this one is just more fun.

You've gotta watch Luca now! Keep up with the fishman island arc! It has such inspirational ideas such as ordering Bruno to shut up and trying to buy a Vespa

Moanas story song is one I like a lot but its not stuck in my head like "your welcome" is so I credit it less as a fave. Still one of the best songs out there given how it evolves throughout the movie. Moana 2 picks up where this one leaves off according to the commercials; I look forward to watching it.

The best part for me is the symbolism with Te Fiti becoming Te Ka - the volcanic soil of the Hawaiian islands is *extremely* fertile, but requires devastating effects in order to get that volcanic soil to the surface to begin with. So to have the two entities be the same being makes perfect sense.

The legends are based of pele the goddess of volcanoes and bringer of new life, when asleep she creates life when awake she destroys it

Without a shadow of a doubt Maui is one of Dwayne the Rock Johnson's best performances he just so effortlessly melds with the character and plays every scene he's in so masterfully.

one of the models used for Maui was photos of Dwayn Johnson's grandfather in his tribal chief wrestling costume.

There is the 'what can I say except AAA!' meme, which comes from this movie, but not much else comes to mind.

BTW, for anyone wondering: Moana 2 is not worth seeing. Disney did that thing again where they just staple 3 episodes of a scrapped tv show together and call it a sequel.
@soul6733Ай бұрын
I've heard it does have a bit of central plot tho.
@AuraSilverHeroАй бұрын
Apparently it was because Wish bombed in theaters, so they crunched the studio into making those 3 episodes look like movie quality. Pretty bad practices.

It has a plot and makes an ok movie, but there's something a bit lacking by the end of the movie. You just get a feeling of "OK, that's nice. Good for them", but since Moana already had most of her development in this movie and the crew doesn't really get any development at all, it feels weirdly rushed. And then they end it on sequel bait and I just sighed

I Quiet liked it, and thought it fun to watch, and completely Forgot about it originally being a Disney+ series. But to be fair i went in with low expectations and just wanted to have fun.
