it's very calculated on the Capitol's part to make the victors and the tributes families meet like that. like you said, it sows animosity between them and works to deflect the justified rage of the families on to the victors rather than the real culprits: the Capitol and Snow. the families see the murder happen and meet the murderer and forget that it was all state sanctioned and that the Capitol is behind it all in the end.

it was also a double edged sword because of how peeta and katniss handled addressing District 11. they were so earnest about how they felt towards thresh and rue that it reminded everyone who the enemy was. suzanne collins is fantastic at writing how different contexts and people can change the same situation.

showing plutarch as a character who cares more about the rebellion succeeding than the people the rebellion is for is a very interesting move. because in that scene with snow he does several things, he makes himself look like a hardline capitol supporter to snow, which will make him more free to make risky moves down the line, and he makes things actively worse for the districts, which makes them MORE likely to rebel. he’s trying to raise the anger in the districts. it’s interesting because it shows that he’s actually become like snow in this respect, not seeing or caring about the people who are killed as long as the goal or the “greater good” is achieved. it shows how people in power in all movements, whether good or bad, can lose sight of what is important and become corrupted.

The thing about Gale is that he's more worried about Katniss choosing him over anybody else after she just went through a traumatic experience, even before you go to the big things he does that makes us not like him (in Mockingjay) I was so frustrated with him, speacially in Catching fire obviously, like Katniss had to kill people, watch people get kill and surviving all of that just to come home and having fking Gale being like "but do you love me or not?" haha and making her feel bad about not being emotionally available sooooo that's why I wasn't the biggest fan of him from this point on, I get why he's so angry with the capitol and why he wants so badly to fight them but he's just not being nice to Katniss when all she wants is to protect her family

True, but he's also a teen. Teens are ... well, let's face it, we've all been teens and we all know teens are shitty people, because we were shitty people and all our friends were at that time, too. From a more mature POV of course that sucks. But to a degree with all these hormones it's understandable. Heck, if he had been a PROPER teen, he'd run away with her. But he's still a decent guy behind all the teen-ness. When having to choose between running away with the aim of his hormones and protecting people he chooses the latter. That's more than 95% of us would have done at that age, as shameful as that is. And even though he's mostly in the friend zone (gosh, I hate that concept), he goes on to risk his life to save Peeta. Yes, he does it out of the wrong motif at that time, only because she cares about Peeta. But still he tends to go beyond of what other people are willing to go. I don't ship them. I don't ship any of them. I think the boys should leave Katniss alone with their emotional BS and instead help her find a good trauma therapist (if there are any in Panem). But he doesn't deserve hatred.

The districts are supposed to loosely represent parts of America. The seam that katniss comes from can be interpreted as reservation area and katniss is Native American coded in the books although it isn’t explicitly said. Likewise district 11 represents the south/long held tensions from American slavery. When Rue describes the way work functions in district 11 it can be interpreted as restrictive oppressive slave labor. It is mostly based around agriculture and the tributes katniss mentions from district 11 mostly all have dark skin I believe. The movie kind of fails to accurately represent this because they make district 12 white so the cotton and agricultural labor of district 11 is very jarring. But race is a very interesting detail in the books!

The quote “sometimes the most revolutionary thing you can be is compassionate,” sums up a lot of the meaning behind this book series and I love it so much (even though it’s heartbreaking.) A society which attempts to suppress our instinctive desire to connect and relate to others is truly dangerous. But empathy is a muscle. If it can be weakened, it can also be strengthened. I think a lot of people dogpile on Gale and it is a little undeserved. Gale and Katniss lost a parent in the same mining accident. Overnight they became the head of their families despite only being children themselves. They share in this grief, and together they learn to shoulder this new responsibility. I think the movies can gloss over how important a relationship this is for Katniss. Gale is the one person Katniss can 100% rely on, and she finds a lot of comfort in that fact. And it’s so damn cruel that following the Hunger Games she returns home to find out the one person who could always understand her no questions asked she can no longer relate to. She’s changed, and she hadn’t even wanted to. Unfortunately I think Gale often allows his anger at the Capitol, as righteous and well-deserved as it is, to blind himself to the bigger picture. Katniss has the unique opportunity to see what life is like in the Capitol. She sees how the Capitol is completely inundated with propaganda, and how they’re brainwashed from the second they’re born. She also meets people like Cinna, someone from the Capitol who was kind and compassionate, and was willing to put his life on the line to stoke the fires of the rebellion. But Gale doesn’t get this opportunity. To him, the people in the Capitol are truly despicable. Every year they watch as children kill each other, and every year they cheer and place bets on who they’d like to win. And then they took his best friend away from him, the girl he’s in love with, and she never really came back to him even when she won the Games. I don’t hate Gale, but going into the next book Gale’s rage and indignation at the Capitol is definitely a thing to keep an eye on (and how it influences his decisions.) Honestly, I think Gale and Katniss are very similar. Strong, stubborn and brave. While Peeta is completely different and challenges the stereotypical idea of a male heroine. Peeta is kind, sensitive and compassionate. He’s a baker and a painter. He isn’t a hunter or a fighter like Katniss or Gale. Instead, he brings out a different side to Katniss, not to say Katniss doesn’t have her own inherent goodness but I think Peeta really helps her act upon it more. I honestly think if Gale was put in arena with Katniss instead the rebellion wouldn’t have happened because Gale would have been too busy being pragmatic, coming up with the quickest and easiest way to take everyone down so Katniss could go home.
@patmcconnell99566 ай бұрын
Don’t forget the fact that the only reason Peeta is Gale’s “arch nemesis” is because he’s his only competition for Katniss’s romantic love interest. That’s literally it. Never mind the fact that his motivations seem to be more about guilt tripping Katniss into liking him back than it has been to combat the Capitol for the most part, but he also hasn’t experienced the culture of the Capitol or brutality of the games that only Katniss and Peeta could understand and trauma bond over. Gale sees everyone in the Capitol as the same type of evil (as if Cinna for example was no better than Snow) so he was a more one-dimensional character IMO.

8:30 here’s the thing that I didn’t even realize until you mentioned the comparison of Plutarch in the books vs movies: In the movie, he comes across way more as on a mission, and you can tell from the start that something is up with him. Now, if you’ve read the books you know he’s a part of the rebellion. Follow that mindset in this scene. He is actually incredibly genius here, deceiving snow into making the capital want to hate katniss, but truthfully he is here manipulating snow into being harder on katniss’ district in specific to deepen her hatred for the capital, and ultimately her hatred for snow as well. Gale’s flogging is one of the things that compels her to subtly join in on the rebellion throughout her preparation for the 2nd time she’s going into the games.
@suzannemoses25236 ай бұрын
Something to think about - the hierarchy of needs. Katina’s is purely focused on survival, her own and her immediate family. She is traumatized before the first hunger games by poverty, her mother’s depression, her father’s death, and the burden of ensuring her sister’s survival. Then the additional trauma of the games, and realizing that the actions she took inside the arena -in order to survive - have put her sister in /more/ danger. She cares about Peeta, she cares about Gale, but she doesn’t have the emotional bandwidth to love either of them because she is not safe.
@scahearn62796 ай бұрын
I don’t think that it’s not her having the emotional bandwidth because when reading the books she very clearly has feelings for Peeta (both emotionally and sexually)that she doesn’t understand though-out the book.I think she is so focused on survival and not wanting emotional attachment because it leads to marriage and children that she does not have the ability to recognize what she is feeling and keeps pushing it down. It’s why she keeps calling what is very clearly her being turned on by Peeta as warm feelings or a new type of hunger.

I think the point of the tour is to sow resentment between the districts. That they view their enemies as being their neighbors which would prevent unity between the districts to form an uprising because they are too busy hating each other and rubbing their faces in it.

13:13 Because Katniss is so new to being a victor, and the other victors already know/have rapport with each other, it’s a kind of way of hazing/initiating Katniss into their group. The reason they’re so brazen about it is because she was so squeamish around Peta in the first book. She couldn’t stand for him to be naked around her, so she went another way about trying to get him and his wound clean. Johanna strips down in the elevator to make her squirm. It’s just their way of picking on her.

as someone who watched the movies first - yes I was incredibly confused. the reveal of 'rebellion' was massive for me, like there were hints across the movie, but as you've pointed out, a lot of the information wasn't included, so I was very much in the dark and it made the reveal - I wouldn't say a 'plot twist', but just a massive unexpected cliffhanger. -also extra note: after I'd watched the movies I was talking about them with a friend, turns out she's read the books and seen the movies (in that order), and she filled me in on a BUNCH of stuff that was in the books that didn't make it to the films, and oh my god, did that change my understanding. I love the movies, but after hearing about all the detail that was cut - like damn. all the set up/foreshadowing for the rebellion and district 13, the backstory on characters, the level of cruelty that the capital actually went to, etc, etc, like I do wish they had tried to include just a bit more of all that into the movies

I highly recommend Suzanne Collins’ other series The Underland Chronicles. It’s extremely underrated (I think people just don’t realize it exists) but just as good as Hunger Games. It’s technically a middle grade series so it’s written for an even younger audience than this, but they’re so well written and touches on some very mature and dark themes that makes it accessible to older readers. It has a very interesting concept and definitely has more light hearted moments but it does get pretty dark so it’s not necessarily a happy read. But after reading it you can definitely see how Suzanne came to write something like the hunger games. I always recommend it because I think it deserves so much more hype than it has.

I love this series, I re read or rewatch it atleast 4 times a year. Also I think the part of them leaving the part out about district 13 is well done because it leaves us out of the loop just as much as Katniss is left out

I think the brilliance of Plutarch's character (both book and movie) is that he's very good at covering his tracks. He knows Snow will respond to pompous cruelty that will allow him to fly under the radar long enough to accomplish his part in the rebellion. And although Katniss is truly an unreliable narrator, we get and understand why she distrusts people so much. Also, the snow being used for Gale just shows how resourceful the districts should be because they lack these things. Surely if they have access to better healthcare or even clean ice, they wouldn't resort to using snow but they don't. And that's another awesome nuance of this entire series.
@emilylewis53736 ай бұрын
This. Plutarch is written as a perfect spy. The books and the movies never give context of when the plan for the retrieval of Katniss happens/ the original plan verses the one planed out. But in terms of Plutarch as a spy in the movies, the best spies have to pick and choose their battles in which they get close with the enemies and which times they suggest things to further the mission.

The lack of Johanna content is upsetting 😅 Also I think you should make this a series of the most devastating YA books of the 2000s and read the infernal devices
@CsprsSassyHrly6 ай бұрын
AGREED! Johanna is such a great part in the movie - Jenna Malone is an amazing actress and brought so much to the character. I wasn’t crazy about Johanna in Catching Fire (I blame Katniss and her unreliability as a narrator), but in the movie, I loved her.

Okay about District 13. I think they left us and Katniss in the dark about the possibility of 13 existing to increase shock factor. They don’t really have time to add all of the details so they just made it this big reveal. I don’t mind it honestly.

I imagine the choice of removing the scene where Katniss meets the district eight people was to put us in a different perspective with the movie’s Katniss. Because when we find out about district thirteen, we are supposed to be just as confused as Katniss. We had no idea there was more than twelve districts up until this point. Also, maybe they removed it for budget and/or time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not sure if anyone commented this yet, but in regards to Phillip Hoffman, they actually changed part of the end of Mockingjay: at the end of the book, there's a pretty emotional and pivotal scene where Plutarch talks to Katniss about *things* I won't say because I don't want to spoil anything, but in the film, Haymitch reads Katniss a letter from Plutarch because they didn't finish filming that scene before he passed away. They then used existing footage of Hoffman and CGI'd him into the final scene that you see him in in the Mockingjay Part 2 film.

It’s been awhile since I read these books but I don’t remember hating gale in the majority of the books, however I also don’t remember having a strong opinion towards him either. I feel like they definitely hyped up the love triangle in the movies, in the books I don’t remember it being so involved. It mostly focuses on Katniss and her just trying to survive.

Just finished watching: amazing, showstopping, etc! For watching/reading next HIGHLY recommend Howl’s Moving Castle, both the animation and Diana Wynne Jones’ book! Both are quite different (some people say the books is from Sophie’s perspective and the movie is from Howl’s) both are amazing for their medium ❤️

I like that they leave out the hints of 13 from the book. It keeps us in the dark like Katniss.
@klarityfisher89936 ай бұрын
I was okay with them leaving out the stuff about knowing about district 13 still existing because as a viewer, you know about district 13 and how it was destroyed already and this way it’s more of a surprise when it still exists. However, it’s been a long time since I read the books so idk if I’d still feel that way or not.

watching your slow breakdown as this series progresses is perfect......and so reflective of the same thing most of us went through over the *years* it took for us. first with the books, then again with the movies. The story told is so very impactful.

Can I say I really enjoy this series? It's really interesting to hear how differently you interpreted the book and movie from how I did. For example, I was very sure Katniss had a crush on Peeta from the very beginning and thought Gale was a red flag from the beginning as well (not including what happens in the 3rd book). It's entertaining to hear team Gale commentary 😂
@indiajohnson4149Ай бұрын
I will say, I think keeping all of the district 13 stuff out of the movie until the ending reveal actually made me enjoy the reveal more because it felt more like we were in Katniss' pov. Like yes, in the book she is aware that it's possible, but I think film Katniss not knowing anything about it and then getting a whole info dump about Peeta being left behind, everything being a secret plot for the rebellion, District 13 being real, and District 12 being destroyed is actually much more impactful and in some ways faithful to what I think her character would feel in terms of confusion, betrayal, anger, fear, and powerlessness. I think it just hits harder emotionally.

@@melme82 I assume it’s cause he is a fascinating and very effective character. Just cause I don’t like or agree with him a lot of the time, especially in details, and I’d hate him in real life, doesn’t mean I can’t love how well written and developed and nuanced he is! Same with president snow! Sorta like Snape, depending on where you stand on him, lol. Despicable person, fantastic character
@scoooops6 ай бұрын
@@nonnieamiens989 100% this. People boil Gale down to needy guy with anger issues and ignore sooooo much nuance and backstory. Dude grew up loving this girl, and Katniss even tells us that if it weren't for the capital and the hunger games, she would be with Gale. Then you go and have Gale watch the girl he loves suffer at the hands of the capital, and be forced into this relationship with Peeta, and people wonder why he acts the way he does in Mockingjay. He's for sure a flawed character, but he's a teenager who has known almost nothing but sadness and oppression his entire life. Everyone likes to think they would be Peeta in this world, but I bet a lot more of us would be closer to Gale

The thing with Gale is I never registered katniss loving him romantically. In the books she very actively is like “I don’t want to love because love means children and I refuse to bring children into this world”. Gale is like her brother, I always felt like he felt for her more than she did him. Peeta is the one she starts to genuinely love and ends up representing the hope for a future where she could love and have a family in a changed world. Gale is the steady past, the childhood rock. Peeta is the hopeful future that brings out the best in her.
