Leslie Neilsen was type cast as a villain for the majority of his career. When he was cast as the lead in the original Police Squad, critics were all "Leslie Neilsen can't do comedy!" Then his whole career got a new life to it, and he's been know for being a comedic actor ever since.

He was Francis Marion THE SWAMP FOX in Disney's TV mini-series of the same name - an heroic figure in the Revolutionary War found in the southern coastal communities. His first feature film he was The Reporter in Glenn Ford's original version of RANSOM (young boy kidnapped from rich parents). But on TV, Leslie was sometimes cast a villain (or The villain) in episodes. He did a couple of villain roles in COLUMBO episodes but his career was dwindling, then he appeared in AIRPLANE and producers realized they could use him as a straight-man in absurd comedies. What a great thing after that!
@richardb6260 Жыл бұрын
Neilsen appeared in Airplane! before he did Police Squad (in color). That's where he began his comedy career. The writer/directors cast a number of dramatic actors (Neilsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges) because they wanted them to deliver their lines like they would in dramatic roles. Neilsen wasn't always cast as villains. He began as a leading man and romantic interest in films like Forbidden Planet and Tammy and the Bachelor. He also starred as Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion in Disney's The Swamp Fox. He did play a lot of villain of the week roles on shows like The Man from UNCLE, Wild Wild West, and Columbo. Neilsen continued to do mostly dramtic roles even after Airplane!. It wasn't until the success of The Naked Gun that he started to do comedy exclusively.

Yes, those were indeed real roaches. According to Romero, they payed something like $.50 per roach, and used about 250,000 of them. Fun fact, when Tom Savini, who hates bugs with a passion, worked on that segment; so when he noticed on on his hand, he TELEPORTED across the room, having freaked out momentarily and completely lost all recollection of traversing the distance.
@masterjoelnathan11 ай бұрын
Actually that's just a hypothetical; Romero stated that's the cost if you wanted to buy bugs off a catalogue for filming. But 50cents per NY roach would've been steep. So he went the more economical route and got two entomologists to go to Trinidad where roaches could be found in batcaves living in feces. Hence why a lot of this roaches (the larger ones with the weird patterns) don't look like an average roach, it's cause they're not from the US.

This film was inspired by classic EC Comics series such as The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, and Tales from the Crypt. A year after this film came out, George Romero would create the syndicated TV series Tales from the Darkside as a sort of follow-up to Creepshow. That series would get its own film, which is also an anthology horror movie with a wraparound segment. In fact, the TFTD film would feature a segment that had been intended for Creepshow II, and Tom Savini regards it as essentially another Creepshow sequel.

The marble ashtray can be seen in all the sequences. This is also true for the new Creepshow TV series on Shudder. Yes, they made the comic to go along with the movie but it did come afterwards. The roaches are real, they were brought in from Brazil, something like 50,000 of them. They were the single most expensive thing on the movie. There is artwork of the wife making the last call to Pratt in his "safe" room. She is surrounded by witchcraft paraphernalia implying she cast a curse on him to cause this, but it was never shown in the movie. Tom Savinni is the skinny garbage man with the mustache seen at t he end. Creepshow 2 is ok but not as great. Tick'R'Treat (which I think you already watched) is the real Creepshow 2.

Here's some fun "Crate" trivia: The crate creature's nickname during production was "Fluffy.". And Fluffy's crate has made multiple appearances in other movies and TV shows such as The Walking Dead, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, and the 2019 Creepshow TV series. "The Crate" was based on one of Stephen King's uncollected short stories published in Gallery magazine in 1979. In the story, a shipping label on the crate makes it clear that that the "Arctic" expedition was actually an _Antarctic_ expedition, which took place in 1834, when the two poles were referred to as the "North Arctic" and the "South Arctic." So "The Crate" could be seen as an _homage_ to H.P. Lovecraft's horror novel At the Mountains of Madness. Except the Miskatonic Antarctic expedition took place in the year 1930. So 100 years before that, someone found Fluffy in Antarctica and shipped him to the States. Is it possible that Fluffy is.... well, a shoggoth? One more thing: the events of the short story take place at the same time as the events in King's novel Christine, and in the same part of Pennsylvania. In Christine, both of Arnie Cunningham's parents are professors at (the fictional) Horlicks University, which is the setting for "The Crate." A character in Christine mentions the recent disappearance of Mike, the janitor who gets eaten by Fluffy. Now I don't know how interesting this all is but now that you've read it, you're stuck with it.

Kat, "Creepshow" is a classic. If you feel like checking out other Horror anthologies, there is "Tales From The Darkside: The Movie", "Tales From The Crypt" (the 1970s film, not the tv show), and "Tales From The Hood". There are others, but those are some of the most well-known.

The little boy in the beginning was played by Stephen King's son, Joe. He went on to write his own series of horror books and short stories under the pen name "Joe Hill". His full name is Joseph Hillstrom King, but he shortened it to avoid nepotism, and wanted to earn notoriety in his own right. I highly recommend _Heart-Shaped Box_ , _NOS4A2_ , _20th Century Ghosts_ , and the _Locke and Key_ series.

If you notice this shot (16:00) at the end of the story that Stephen King starred in, the road sign that says "Castle Rock 5"? That was a nod to King's favorite creepy town in Maine. He had written many short stories based in that town. Ironically, years later, Hulu developed a horror series called "Castle Rock", which was based on many of King's short stories and novels that were set in favorite town in Maine. Just some trivia I thought I'd share with you Kat! By the way, I love your reaction to this movie! This was always one of my favorite horror movies growing up in the 80s. :)
@Fardawg Жыл бұрын
That isn't ironic at all. King created Castle Rock; it isn't a real town. And even if it was a real town, it still would not be "ironic" that they created a show set in the town.

The cockroaches were all real if you saw them moving around. The movie had bug wranglers who went to South America and got the biggest, nastiest ones they could dig out of caves full of bat guano. To do Upson Pratt vomiting roaches, Tom Savini and his crew did a full cast mold of E.G. Marshall, then rigged it with a huge push tube up into the mouth and another up out of the chest, so the roaches could be pushed out. Some of the cave roaches were bigger than a computer mouse. For huge mounds of roaches, like in Pratt's bed, they made a pile of brown nuts, chestnuts, and other brown shapes, then covered that with a layer of real roaches.

Creepshow is an homage to horror comics of the 1950s published by EC Comics, such as Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear. Following the publication of the book, ‘Seduction of the Innocent' by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham in 1954, where he accused comic books of promoting juvenile delinquency in minors, many comic book companies were hit with censorship rules by conservative politicians in the U.S. government, and EC Comics ended up going out of business as a result.

What's everyone's ranking of the stories? Mine would probably be: 3, 4, 5, 1, 2. Although I might switch Creeping with Father's Day. 3- Something to Tide You Over 4- The Crate 5- They're Creeping Up on You! 1- Father's Day 2- The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill I'm guessing Kat would have Tide first because of Leslie Nielsen and Creeping last, because of the poor roaches being abused. 😁

This might be the greatest reaction to Creepshow, from beginning to end, they should put this on the DVD as a bonus feature!!!! Did someone explain to you about the roaches yet? I will tell all if no one else has come forward! I agree 100% with your rating and your reactions 100%. Saw this in the theater when it came out, at the height of Stephen King-mania. Same year as Poltergeist and The Thing. Best year for horror movies since 1931! It's my favorite horror movie directed by a director who only did horror movies. (All my other favorites are from directors who only did one or two horror films.....but did them at an extremely high level of cinema, ie Kubrick, Phillip Kaufman, Polanski, Friedkin, Landis, etc.) LOVED THIS REACTION! Possibly my favorite reaction on your channel yet! Great edit also!!!

Yes. Real roaches. A lot of them. They pumped them through a giant syringe through a dummy of E.G. Marshall. These were all King ideas or stories. Weeds and The Crate were previously published. The comic book was published around the time the film was released. This was an homage to the horror comics if the 1950s including Tales from the Crypt (later to be a TV series on HBO). There were also two British films made in the 1970s called Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror.

I recall not being allowed to watch this as a kid, but finding an actual graphic novel movie tie-in at the bookstore and reading that anyway...and being scared out of my mind. Probably scarier and more traumatizing than the actual movie that way! Thanks Mom and Dad! 😂👍

That's funny. This was the first "R" rated film I was allowed to watch! My mom had seen it and was telling me all about it and said I should watch it. I'm like, "OKAY!" I was allowed to watch an "R" rated movie at twelve years old? Hell yeah! She recorded it for me on tape and I loved it! However, the tape ran out just at the end of "The Crate." So I grew up never having seen the whole complete movie. I was in my twenties before I finally saw the final segment!

Yes, those were real roaches of all kinds of different species for the final story. Some of the big ones I believe were hissing cockroaches, which are so big and docile that some people even keep as pets! Unfortunately those all were real roaches, and every one the actors crush or step on were the real deal. And that's just for the final takes, too many to count for the takes they didn't keep.

To answer your question Kat... Yes, they hired an actual cockroach wrangler, who brought thousands of cockroaches to the set, and let them loose. Back then it was either practical effects, or they used real animals when called for. Computers at this time were far too primitive to be of much help. Greetings from a fellow Canadian. 😀
