The horror of this movie when you watch it, the story when you read the book, is what grief can do to a person. We can all say “I wouldn’t do this or do that no matter how badly I’m hurting from the loss of a loved one.” But the fact is we don’t know what we’re capable of in moments of despair and grief. We can all lose our grip on our sanity.

i refer to what a critic said because for once i agree with a critic "stephen king films often come off as mixed bags, especially if one has read the book version already...but not many as much as Pet Sematery...this extremely dark and messed up story never has a happy ending no matter which way it's told...with a father that never learns, a child that needs therapy, a cat that always dies and a dangerous road to blame it all on. While an excellent story it has never perfected it's flow...it's either trying too hard to be dark and gory or overdramatic and spiritual...with a touch of dark humour to keep the giggles up. Well hey the cat is black...we should have known from the start that's a bad sign...this is Stephen King after all."

He combined the two and put his spin on it without sacrificing the original lore and source material. I guess the reason they didn't include it in the film outright was because of budget reasons. Gage killed Herman Munster for the reason Herman said: he had shown the doctor the power and felt responsible for Gage's death. Apparently the place was somewhat sentient and wanted Gage. Or it could have been the Wendigo. In the novel it was a Wendigo that was around the old native cemetery. It may not have gotten the cat and the man, but it probably got the dog and certainly Gage and the wife. Made them not a "zombie" but more of a ghoul in that they were vengeful and perhaps needed to eat flesh. In some lore, the Wendigo would corrupt the living into becoming killers and maybe cannibals before feeding on them.
@chrispipes5451 Жыл бұрын
I was hoping somebody would mention the Wendigo and the influence it had over events. In the book, Jud sat outside to wait for Louis to come back from digging up Gage, to stop him. The Wendigo caused Jud to fall asleep on the porch, which is how Louis made his way up to the burial grounds, uninterrupted. THEN, being petty as all get out, had Gage take care of Jud first for being a party pooper.

Even as an evil smelly undead demon cat, Church is adorable. Choosing a British shorthair to play him was a great choice, so cute and distinct. If I remember correctly, in the book the old burial ground was actually a part of the land ruled by a wendigo, and the indigenous tribe marked it as forbidden to humans. So when Lewis Creed buried Church in the burial ground, he unknowingly invited the wendigo, which then had influence on Gage dying. So Lewis not wanting to address Church's death, not wanting to let Ellie process death and the loss of her cat, came back tenfold on him. The final stage of grief is acceptance after all, and the refusal to accept made things worse.

The Wendigo is also the reason why Jud being way older is able to climb up to the burial ground so quickly while Louis struggling .

King was famously inspired by his own life with this book. I believe it was when he was teaching and, just like the Creeds, the King family moved to a house by a high travel road. First the family cat Smucky was killed, then there was a very close call with King’s son Owen. Understandable why King stuffed this book away for several years before publishing it.

One fact it´s that the old man (Jud) was played by Fred Gwynne, who also played Herman Munster in the Munsters (Gwynne size was 6´5´) . There is also a cameo of Stephen King, who wrote this book, (the priest in the film).
@richardb6260 Жыл бұрын
One of the most faithful adaptations of one of King's novels. Helps that King himself wrote the script. Two of my favorite King films are Cujo and Cat's Eye. Cat's Eye adapts two of King's previously published short stories as well as another King wrote for the movie. Another good one is Creepshow. It's directed by George A Romero and written by King. It's five stories told in the style of a horror comic book from the 50s. King plays the main character in one of the stories.

Cujo was the first Stephen King novel. I read it in middle school.

I like the fact that the Priest at the funeral was Steven King himself. If I moved into a place like that, the first thing I would do is to build a fence around my front yard to help keep my kids from wandering too close to the road.

Gage was even scarier in the book. Because of how he died, he was very deformed and basically moved around like a broken marionette. To get back at Lou for spoiling its fun, the Entity let Gage come back at the very end. Gage had enough time to recognise Lou, ask him "Daddy?" then fall over dead for a second time. It broke Lou so completely that the story actually ceases to be from his perspective after that. Like Call of Cthuhlu rpg "your character is now an NPC under the GM's conrol now" style. There's reason King thought this book was too dark to publish originally.

OK, I definitely need to get on this book right the phuck now because that description you gave was truly chilling and I want more, LOL. It's weird - I've read so much Stephen King, but I still haven't read this one yet!
@83gemm Жыл бұрын
@@itscarriebombMake sure you are in a healthy mindset. It’s a story about the madness of grief and if you’re anywhere on that journey- I mean if you are mourning a houseplant right now - wait a while. If you do tackle it, I’d recommend the audiobook. Michael C Hall (who played Dexter and played David on Six Feet Under) narrates it quite well. It’s REALLY good, which is why I give the warning. Uncle Steve went to a dark place in this one. He and his family really did live in a similar place and his daughter really DID lose a cat to the road. One day, his toddler son made a break for the road, but, thankfully, King caught him before he got there. When he wrote the book, he was exploring his own worst “what if.” It’s clearly a deeply personal story for him and it shows. I don’t know how to explain it, except to say that it’s REAL.

@@itscarriebomb 😂 I just like to give folks a warning that it’s a great book, but don’t touch it during the grieving process. “Sometimes dead is better,” because grief creates even more grief. But it’s really really good. The wife’s character is far more palatable in the book, in my opinion.

Not only is this story terrifying, it's so SAD! That poor family. Stephen King did amazing showing the horror of grief and what it can do to someone. If a place like that burial ground existed, and someone you love more than anything died.....some people would be tempted. Grief is a very powerful thing and we all have someone we wish we had more time with. Stephen King is brilliant.

Actually, although I saw the movie, it was one of the few Stephen King novels I didn't read. Knowing that King likes to make connections between his stories, obviously in Pet Semetary, both Rachael and Ellie "Shined" like Danny and Jack Torrance (although Jack having the Shining was just in the book--it was the reason he could see and interact with all the ghosts at the Overlook). There's also a connection between The Shining & Misery, as well as another between Delores Claiborne and Storm of the Century, and also Carrie and Rose Red. And I'm sure there are many more that I can't think of, at present. It seems King created his own entire world of horror, supernatural, and the macabre. I suggest checking out the Stephen King mini-series movies Storm of the Century and Rose Red

As always, you are so full of expression with your reactions, and jumps. It is so entertaining to watch. I was about 10 years old, when I was over at my cousin's house and they were watching it. We were heading over to another cousin's house, and the scene we left at, was the truck scene. My memory of that time was the bloodied sneaker. I was in 6th grade, and saw the book at the public library and checked it out. It started my fandom of Stephen King. After I read the book, I watched the movie all the way through. Stephen King based this story on a house he and his family moved to. It had a Pet Sematary, but not haunted, of course. They lived on a busy highway, and one day his son was running towards the road and a truck was coming. Stephen King said he ran, and dove and was able to stop his son from getting into the highway. It terrified him. His mind went down the rabbit hole of what could have happened.

The only movie produced from his novels is "The Manitou". Back to this one... Pet Sematery is so haunting in so many places. It's actually a study in King's way of writing..

I don't remember how it went down in the book, but my guess is that Gage isn't really Gage when he comes back. He's a manifestation of the evil in the burial ground that remembers when Judd and the others killed the other guy who was resurrected. Gage went to Judd's house to kill him to get revenge for that, I think.
