One aspect i really love about Brother Bear is that there’s no villain. Denahi isn’t out for revenge because he’s a bad guy, but because he wants to redeem himself and kill the bear responsible for killing both his brothers…unaware that the bear he’s hunting throughout the movie is his younger brother. This is a pretty profound and ambiguous moral dilemma for a Disney animated movie and definitely ahead of its time.

The villain is the main character, Kenai. Who needs to learn love….thats the whole plot….did you miss it? He’s selfish and prone to anger and hate. He caused the death of his brother because of this, lead his other brain down a path of shame and loss. The movie is his process of learning love.

@@zzodysseuszzit doesn't make him a villain tho. He's not evil, he's not even a bad person. He's simply stupid due to his young age and arrogant. An anti-hero maybe, but definitely not a villain.

That transformation scene… man. What a stunning blend of animation, choir, score, drama, heartbreak. I think one of the best moments is when Kenai is shocked and happy to see Sitka again, but Sitka can’t even be happy to see his brother again from the afterlife because of the wrong he did.

Joaquin Phoenix, who voiced Kenai, lost his brother River in real life. According to the director, when they were recording Kenai's reaction to Sitka's death, Phoenix's performance was so raw and intense that much of it had to be cut for fear that it would upset kids too much.

I’ve seen people like Doug Walker complain about the "No Way Out" sequence because of the song that plays over Kenai telling Koda what happened. But honestly as a kid, I was so horrified that Kenai killed his mother that I didn’t *want* to hear whatever words he chose, because it was unimaginable. It was heartbreaking watching Koda’s face fall as he starts putting it together. That said, I’d happily accept a compromise where it’s just instrumental score instead of a song.
@jimthecactus7425
@jimthecactus7425 Жыл бұрын
Imo having a scene where he actually says what happened would've been bad direction. We as the audience already know what happened so it's dumb and pointless to have him tell us again. I think it's harder hitting having the music that goes along with how Kenai feels, seeing their expressions, and getting little bits of dialogue. I'll never understand the people that dislike that scene.

Cinema Therapy made a video just a few days ago with Aaron Blaise, the director of Brother Bear, and they talk about why that scene was done the way it was. Originally they just had Kenai tell Koda in a short dialogue without the song, but it felt too cruel to Koda so Aaron came up with the idea of the camera circling them with inset close-ups to show their expressions as needed. The song was added to illustrate the emotional impact on both of them without dragging out the unpleasantness of a small child being told his mother is dead and his best friend killed her. Personally I also wouldn't mind if it had been instrumental instead (the instrumental pieces in this movie are amazing), but maybe that on its own wouldn't have had the same impact for younger kids. Also, Phil really wanted to do another song.
@insignia9325

To answer your question why Sitka brought them together: when Kenai fights Denai in the end and he loses to him, he gave up. He just said "please" but from his voice you can tell he is too tired to fight, done with everything. And then Koda drops in. He goes vigilant, wide awake and panicked. Sitka, as cruel as it is, wanted him to experience what Koda's mom experienced her last minutes. Because when Koda dropped in, he suddenly had a reason to fight, to move. To protect the one he loves: his little brother.

There's a part I didn't like with Phil Collins's song narration; the part with Kenai telling Koda the truth about his mother. There's a deleted scene where Kenai tells Koda the story outright rather than having the song tell us how to feel, and it's so much better, especially when Kenai tells Koda, "I did something very wrong. I... I killed a bear."

Brother Bear is my favorite Disney movie of all time. My favorite Disney movie is always gonna be Brother Bear. I could watch Brother Bear a million times and never grow tired of it. After rewatching the film, I understand why the totem of Love was shaped like a bear. I mean, of all of the animals Kenai meets, only the bears throw a celebration centered on friends and family - basically, love all around. It also demonstrates that, similar to how humans pursued bears, bears attacked humans in order to defend their loved ones. Let me just mention that Phil Collins' songs and soundtracks are truly outstanding in this film. I also enjoy the music. This film is a hella tearjerker and an emotional rollercoaster, I remember having many emotional and mental breakdowns as a child and that I still do as an adult. Phil, why did you go so hard with these soundtracks and songs? Phil Collins went absolutely hard with this soundtracks(and Tarzan). Phil is absolute Legend!

10:38 growing up, I could never place why I liked this movie so much. But, now that I’m older, I get it. I, too, am an eldest sibling. If I had lost my siblings to the same cause, I’d be out for blood like Denahi (assuming I wasn’t there to lay down my life like Sitka, cause that’s my first choice). Denahi truly thinks he’s lost his brothers, he’s grieving and hurt and filled with anger. He isn’t a bad person, he isn’t evil, he’s just a grieving brother with a vendetta against the thing that took his brothers away. He’s the “antagonist” but he isn’t a bad person, which isn’t all too common in storytelling.

They both were the delux editions and I spent years exploring every single thing both those DvDs had to offer. From the commentaries to behind the scenes, watching the entire movie hundreds of times. They even had games on the DvD. The Brother Bear one did have a game where you could take a sort of quiz to determine what totem you'd get, to answer your question at 3:36. I believe there was Salmon, Wolf, Bear, Eagle and 1 other that I cannot remember. I got Wolf. Never got to see Brother Bear 2, but this movie along with Finding Nemo are ingrained into my life to the point I can recite this movie word for word.

One's Totem is both the guiding spirit of your life and the representation of your truest being. Animals have different meanings in different cultures around the world and throughout history. The Bear represents love because it is an animal that's bonded with its family and is ferocious in protecting them, with the examples of the movie being a brother is bonded with their brother(s) and that familial connection ties them together throughout their lives and a mother bear that is deeply devoted and caring for her cub(s) and will do everything in her incredible power to defend and guide them.

Given that I am indigenous Mexicano, we have a different totem system based on our birth month and day; mine is the Xoloitzcuintli dog, and through cross reference with Inuit tradition mine would be the bear as well though it would be of the protector not the one who leads by love

I just saw a video with the director of this movie, and he said it's all about seeing the world through someone elses eyes. The aspect ratio and color palette change when Kenai becomes a bear. Director also said that a lot of the core message of the movie was inspired by the awful attacks against Muslim people after 9-11, how all around him he saw people that were just trying to live their lives being targeted as monsters.

Disney is known for going to countries in other places to get their animals and voices and dialect, right? It's pretty cool they went to hawaii for Li low and stitch and actually used hawaiian children's chorus group for some of their songs.😊

Dude, I loved this movie as a kid. The characters that stood out to me were the moose brothers, Rutt & Tuke. I heard there was a tv show that they were gonna do based off these two, but then they scrapped the idea.

I like to tell people that, the song the Spirits sing when they turn Kenai into a bear is Inupiaq, and has a translation, which tells you exactly what they're doing and why they're doing it. "Come with me, I'll take you now To a place that you fear For no reason why Your heart has turned away from me But I will make you understand. Everything will become clear to you When you see things through another's eyes Everything will become clear to you Whatever's meant for you you will find Come with me, I'll take you there To a place where you'll see Everything you need To be the one you need to be And all of those things That you fear Will disappear From you In time Everything will become clear to you When you see things through Another's eyes Everything will become clear to you Whatever's meant for you You will find." It wasn't a punishment. In killing the bear, Kenai hadn't just killed something... that's just life, just living. He had betrayed his totem in the greatest way and fully lost his path, turning away from the path he needed to take. Sitka and the spirits were setting Kenai back on the right path and helping him follow his path again.

This is the best animated movie(aside from other movies before and a few around it's time), as other people said here in the comments, best sibling story, even great scenes, and it shows the scary side of a human hunting you down, as your an animal, also shows a tiny bit of native American traditions
