Moana Movie Description:
An adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity.
Moana (also known as Vaiana or Oceania in some markets) is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The 56th Disney animated feature film, it was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, co-directed by Chris Williams and Don Hall, and produced by Osnat Shurer. The film introduces Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and also features the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk. The film features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina, and an orchestral score also composed by Mancina.
The film tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people. The plot is original, but takes inspiration from Polynesian myths.
Moana was released theatrically in the United States on November 23, 2016, to positive reviews from critics, with particular praise going towards its animation, music, and vocal performances. The film went on to gross over $645 million worldwide. Along with Zootopia, it marked the first time since 2002 that Walt Disney Animation Studios released two feature films in the same year, since Lilo & Stitch and Treasure Planet. At the 89th Academy Awards, the film received two nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("How Far I'll Go").

Just a curious question but how did the similar stories happen to come about on different islands spread apart? Was it due to various islanders populating new islands/coming to another island with people already on it and spreading the stories? Or did these different island communities happen to come about the same stories independently? I don't mean to sound ignorant, I'm just genuinely interested in knowing more!

Things I noticed: -Moana's Tatau appears on Maui right over his heart. She will always be close to his heart. It is also the only Tatau that neither features himself, nor his hook. Because he didn't need his hook to teach Moana to wayfind and help her, and he did it in the end out of care for her, rather than for himself. -The necklace Moana is wearing throughout the film, in which she keeps the Heart, is worn by the Voyager Chief Ancestor, and is handed from one Voyager Chief to the next when the time to Voyage comes again. When Grandmother gave it to Moana, she was naming her the next Voyager Chief, and saying the time to Voyage was back once more after all these years. - Te Fiti is a volcano goddess, representing both the islands, fertile soil, and life they can bring, but without her Heart she becomes Te Ka, who represents is capable of only the fire and destruction a volcano can wreak.

Moana is one of my fave Disney movies along with Tangled. I love Frozen and Encanto, but something about Moana hit different! I loved Moana was expected to lead and take over as chief vs getting married to a prince to be seen as valid. Her huge aspirations to save her people and everyone was much bigger than herself and I think that's why this movie sparked more of these kinds of heroines. Maui is based off of folklore, but apparently the movie Maui wasn't entirely welcome by the Polynesian people. Either way, loved the inclusion of native language in songs, as it's the first I think!

I'm white as anything, but I really appreciate that Disney is out here finally representing a more diverse people. (Not just skin colour, but also LGBT aswell in some of their other stuff). I'm so white that I fear showing my bare legs in the summer, because people may get blinded. We've got so many white princesses to choose from, it was getting kinda bland and boring, every one of the 'older' princesses doesn't do sh*t except for being a beautiful, kind damsel in distress waiting to be rescued by a prince whom she immediately marries. Those new Disney princesses aren't only much more diverse, so that every little girl can pick one that looks like her, they are getting more and more independent, strong and smart. What's not to love about that? 😊

@@ichmeiner4531 thank you for this. Sometimes it’s hard to talk to about the need for diversity and I often shy away from it. This comment really made my day. I started crying so hard watching the Pixar film Turning Red because I’ve been struggling with a racial identity crisis for a long time… I still am. But seeing movies like Turning Red and Shang Chi and To All The Boys I Loved Before and there show dash and Lily. While not all of these are Chinese it still heals something in me that the Asian girls can be main characters too. As a kid I didn’t think anyone would ever have a crush on me because I was Asian and I accepted that. Now that I’m older I’m realizing how messed up that was. Seeing all these diverse characters show up in amazing movies… it’s amazing. There are no words for how happy it makes me.

The great thing about Moana is that, even though it is about a "strong female" character, the story doesn't make it all about her proving herself despite being a girl. She is already recognized as the next chief and she has nothing to prove. The same story could have been told with a boy. In the long run I think this kind of movie is more empowering. When she sings, "I am Moana" it is filled with so much it still overwhelms me. Throughout that song she goes from defeat to remembering that she is part of a lineage of brave explorers and she carries that spirit of her ancestors. In that conviction she learns that she is more than just herself and finally knows who she is. When she sings, "I am Moana" it is with with immense joy, pride and power. And the singer brings all that to her performance. It is all in there and it overwhelms me.

I also like the fact that they didn't make the male character (Maui) weaker than Moana to make her appear better. Maui being a demigod has supernatural strength and wayfinding knowledge that he teaches to Moana, while Moana teaches Maui humility and to see himself beyond his demigod status

All Polynesian legends have similarities as all are stemmed from the same story. We are sea faring people, master navigators, people of earth and water. In my family and in my opinion, most Maori whanau (family) we have a close connection and deep respect for our ancestors. We come from a long line of chiefs. I can trace my ancestry back to the Captain of my Tribal Waka (The Canoe by which my people arrived in Aotearoa aka New Zealand). Great movie and great reaction Mellow. 👍 Kia Ora

I always thought the songs in this movie were better than Frozen. Not just because of LMM, but because I always felt Frozen had some songs that don't have a point, and are just there for the sake of having a cute song.

100% agree same with frozen 2 there was a lot of unnecessary songs and yes it’s a musical but musicals use songs to tell the story not fill in space. Thankfully with lin manuel on recent disney projects moana, encanto and the upcoming live action little mermaid, the songs actually serve as tools of storytelling not time filling

As much as I love the song "How Far I'll Go", "You're Welcome" is such a bop, and Dwayne Johnson does an amazing job performing it.

No matter I watch this movie multiple times, I feel so proud of my culture. As a polynesian(from french Polynesia), I can tell that movie has some similarities to polynesian culture. The oral transmission at the beginning of the movie (with grandma like it had used to be), the way of sailing (with the stars as an indication...), Maui tattoos (many legends talk about it), Maui's haka (a warrior dance that warrior used before a battle like Maui use with Te Ka), Te Fiti relate to an island of french Polynesia names Huahine (my grandmother's island where I spend my vacation during my chilhood, beautiful by the way)...So, I'm really thankful to Disney for making this movie that show my culture all around the world. And thank you so much for your reaction!!!You're so funny 🤣😂I really enjoy it 🤗👍

Grandma held the Heart of Te Fiti for Moana till she was old enough to go out on her mission. In return, the stone kept Grandma alive and well. When she returned the stone to Moana, her own mission was ended, as was her life.

The little bit of real history in this movie is that for about a thousand years, the Polynesians did stop exploring, and no one exactly knows why. (I think it started around the first century BC, but it’s been a while since I read that factoid.) So this is the Disney fairytale of why they stopped, and then started again.

The ocean doesn't want to constantly help Moana because if she constantly had help she would never grow. What would be the point of this journey if she couldn't learn to problem solve by herself?

Moana is easily my second favorite Disney movie of all time. Alice in Wonderland will always be first, at least as far as I can tell. This one has hands-down the best soundtrack tho. Every single song is endlessly singable, and just makes me happy. I love this movie so much. The first time I saw it, was the week my now fiancee came from Ohio to Florida to visit me, and we were sitting on the couch, watching it on her tablet, and eating pasta, lol. Just cuddled together, in each others' arms, just being together. Maybe that is coloring my opinion of it, but so be it. I love this movie so much.

I think the reason why the ocean doesn't often help Moana during the movie was that she has to prove that the ocean was right to choose her. Moana had to prove that she had the courage, bravery and mental strength to succeed in her mission.

I'd love to see your Hamilton reaction, it might be easier to break it up into two or three songs at a time, to get more of the music through? But that's also a lot of videos and editing. I've seen people do two parts for Act 1 and Act 2 that goes pretty well. Also, subtitles are a must because the whole play is sung through, so you don't want to miss any words.
