The Eye of Harmony does show up again in 'Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS' and also gets a mention in 'Hide'. The Half human does get a cheeky nod in 'Hell Bent' when Me suggests the hybrid could be half time lord half human and questions why the doctor spends so much time on Earth and his reply is "does it matter".

Also, this movie was successful in the UK, just not in the US. The 8th Doctor’s run was continued with the audio dramas by Big Finish. The mini episode Night of the Doctor where 8 regenerates into the War Doctor, he name drops his companions from the audios. If you want to experience more of 8, I highly recommend you listen to them

The Eye of Harmony pops up in Classic Who before this, it's also shown in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS in series 7 as an exploding thing frozen in a white space. Love this movie even if it's very silly, I've watched it loads. I think this movie struggled in America because it's basically 80 minutes of straight doctor who lore drops, also there was some big American sitcom finale at the same time or something? Enjoying this series of first time Doctor Who watching, although face cams would be good to see more reaction.
@Justinfication2 ай бұрын
I did have a face cam in my 7th doctor first time reaction! I'm sure that's something I'll do sometimes when possible, the camera isn't very good though. And that does make sense, it was quite lore-heavy for a new audience. Thanks for watching!
@Jansenbaker2 ай бұрын
Actually, the exploding thing was the "engine" of the TARDIS. The Eye of Harmony was the star kept on the verge of becoming a black hole in that episode. In lore, it is said that there was a central Eye of Harmony on Gallifrey that would beam power to the Eyes of all TARSISes, and gave them time and space calibration by reference. Somehow the Doctor has been able to keep going without it, like fueling up at the rift in Cardiff.

If you want more of 8, then I highly recommend his audio stories, where he's become very prolific. They have my favorite opening theme, composed by James Bond's David Arnold, and have some of the best Dr Who stories out of the entire franchise. They're nice to have on in the background while your doing something else, and his earlier ones are free to listen to on Spotify if you're in the UK (specifically his stories within the first 50 of the monthly range as well as his first season with companion Lucie).

@@Justinfication So basically to start with the 8th Doctor Main Range stuff (1st one is Storm Warning) and after you're done with that move to Eighth Dr Adventures (1st one is Blood of the Daleks). I haven't heard all of them but from my research MR is similar to ClassicWho's style & EDA is similar to NuWho's style.

@monocle_mage92732 ай бұрын
@@Justinfication The main range run started before NuWho so for a time it was arguably the most "current" Doctor Who storyline. It also feels quite a lot like a bridge between Classic and NuWho. Storm Warning is, in my opinion, a really good first story that introduces the new companion, but the quality of the stories does fluctuate a bit early on. Also it's pretty clear that the stories are geared towards people who know classic who. That being said "Chimes of Midnight" is an all time classic and definitely worth checking out. The Eight Doctor adventures aired on radio around the time when NuWho had just started and has a format more similar to that. It even has season long "story arcs" similar to the ones in NuWho. I personally think that it's a better jumping on point and doesn't really reference main range stories. Though personally I do prefer the longer classic format. The two parter "Blood of the Daleks" is the beginning of the season and a good starting point. Both the first 11 Main range stories with McGann as well as the first Eight Doctor Adventures season should be available for free on Spotify so they should be easy to check out. BBC audio also has the first Box set of "Classic Doctors New Monsters" which feature a stand alone McGann story set during the Time War (The Sontaran Ordeal, which is weird since Sontarans debuted in Classic Who). If you eventually want to buy some stories from Big Finish I recommend keeping an eye on their sales as they pretty much always have one or more going on (and as especially the newer releases can be quite pricy, it definitely pays to take advantage of them). The first three seasons of EDA recently got rereleased so you can buy them as collections so that might be something to keep an eye on. I always feel a bit weird when people say we were robbed of Paul McGann as the Doctor or that we got so little from him in the role. I mean, I get it, I too would have liked him to get more stories on TV, but he has such a long and rich run on audio, around 170 stories currently, that it feels weird to talk about him as if he was some kind of weird unknown.

@@Justinfication There's loads to choose from. Big Finish started their 8th Doctor run in 2001 and it's still going strong with no signs of slowing. His early stuff is in more of the classic series format, (25 minute episodes, 4 episodes per story) then after about 2005/6 they switched to the more modern format (45 minute episodes, you know how the modern show works). Both eras make use of story arcs and character development and such, so obviously the most satisfying thing would be to just start at the beginning and go through them all. That being said, if you're skipping around, highlights of the early era include "The Chimes of Midnight", "Seasons of Fear", "Embrace the Darkness" and "The Natural History of Fear". Part of me also wants to suggest the trilogy of "Neverland", "Zagreus", and "Scherzo" with the warning that they're literally a season finale, the 40th anniversary special, and then the next season opener, so going into them without context could be interesting. For the more recent stuff, I'm going to suggest 2015's "Doom Coalition". It is a full season of 16 episodes (each episode is an hour long), sold in 4 volumes (so you can't really purchase individual episodes), but it's very good. You really get a feel for how Paul McGann would work in a full season of the modern series (and if you like it, there's more 4-volume seasons after it, including one set during the time war). Alternatively, since 2022, the 8th Doctor run has been a lot less serialized, so you can just grab a single boxset (3 episodes) without it being part of a larger arc. From those, I particularly liked "What Lies Inside?" and "Connections", but you can't really go wrong with any of them. The Movie is starting to get more love,from what I can see (via reactions). Its very easy to find fault with, and justifiably; but it's also very hard to dislike as a piece of entertainment - and McGann is simply excellent! Going forward, you need to watch (if you can get hold of it,because it's not so easy now) the first Dr Who episode:An Unearthly Child; And it's basically compulsory to watch Genesis of the Daleks, if you want to be considered part of fandom ;)

@@JustinficationI'd recommend not watching Genesis in one sitting. It's very good, but even the best 6-parters can sometimes start to feel a bit... long when viewed that way, especially if you're not very used to the style and pacing of the era. Two or three parts at a time is generally a good amount. This is just a recommendation though, so do whatever feels right. It's not like there are any strict "rules" for this.

@@JustinficationThe lesson of Classic Who is basically, if viewing figures are important for survival of the show - don't schedule it for transmission against Coronation Street or in this case against the VERY last episode of (original run in the US) Rosanne iirc - you'll lose... Also similarly probably not midnight on Friday in the UK ??? Really hoping for an 8th doctor & Lucie 'bleedin' Miller spin off - Paul doesn't look any older in his mid 60's - but Sheridan & Paul might be too busy even if it got greenlit... He also does have further appearances, namely during Flux. I do feel like they totally should bring him back as like 16 or 17 Doctor, Tennant style for like anniversary mini-series or something. Or just bring him as his original self in multi-Doctor story. He is still one of the youngest living Doctors right now.

I actually love this movie lol edit: the half human thing is actually a hold-over from the books. in the 90s there was a range called the virgin new adventures that basically bridged together the events of the show and the tv movie and they were all basically hinting that there was something special about the Doctor. In the last book of the range, lungbarrow, it was revealed that he was the Other- the 3rd of the 3 original founders of Gallifrey and basically created time lord society. It was then hinted at the end of that book that the companion Leela who stayed on Gallifrey after the events of Season 15 was pregnant with the Doctor and that she would be his mother which was an alley-oop for the TV movie which then revealed he's half human on his mothers side. I personally... don't like the twist. I get why they did it, it explains a lot of things but I just don't like it. still good movie though

The Doctor being half-human is a crazy topic. Most say it’s an aspect taken from the Virgin New Adventures novels, but it was actually taken from a short story titled ‘The Chronicles of Doctor Who?’ written by John Leekley who created a bible which acted as the basis for the original TV Movie which was intended to be a complete reboot of the show. The Doctor’s father was to be revealed as a time lord/time explorer named Ulysses who had a son with a human woman named Annalise, reason for the Doctor being half-human. It would also be revealed that Ulysses is the Master’s father, making him and the Doctor half brothers. You can actually briefly hear the script for this particular part of the story in Paul McGann’s audition tape. The bible further included remakes of classic who stories, including Earthshock, Talons of Weng-Chiang, etc, with new designs and names of the original monsters. However, the bible’s pitch was scrapped for being ‘too serious’ and Leekley was fired, but the half human element still remained in the movie obviously. The romantic plot between 8 and Grace was also an element taken from a rejected pitch written by Robert deLaurentis. The whole rabbit hole surrounding this movie is insane, you can find out more about it on Tardiswiki.

If you are watching Classic Series then Genesis of the Daleks was a game changer (this era of Dr Who was run by Philip Hinchcliffe and Robert Holmes and responsible for Sarah Jane becoming popular. eventually the BBC moved Hinchliffe off Dr Who because there were complaints it was to scary for children (his first season borrows from horror films like frankensteins monster and dr jekyll and mr hyde, ) The thig that bothered people at the time about the movie was the continuity problems like the master being tried on Galliffrey, the serpent thing, the half human thing (sometmes explained as being caused due to regeneration instability), and there was rarely romanc in the original series (apart from the 1st Dr accidentally getting married)
