Classic Who will always be my favourite version because the Doctor is more alien and eccentric. He doesn’t act too human by flirting with people or breaking down emotionally, unless it’s Peter Capaldi, he was superb. This story is great but you should also check out Classics like An Unearthly Child, The Daleks (Colourised short version if you’re not keen on the long version) Tomb of the Cybermen, Spearhead from Space, Terror of the Zygons, Caves of Androzani, Revelation of the Daleks, Ghost Light.

This story could very well be considered an early battle of the Time War The Seventh Doctor started a little bit more clownish, but the darkness rose in him, starting with this story. He becomes a bit of chess player, with plans that have plans... You could stay with this season (it was the 25th season anniversary season, and features some really great stories) One thing about classic Who, the stories are a lot more stand alone, with the exception the UNIT era of the 3rd Doctor, but even there, very rarely does events from one story carry directly over. Even the 16th Season, which did have a season long arc, the stories all are separate. But if you were going to watch one from each Doctor I would suggest 1- The Aztecs - it is a historical story, by that I mean there are no aliens or sci fi, beyond the TARDIS and its crew. The pacing is very different, and so is the 1st Doctor 2 - The Tomb of the Cybermen - Early Cybermen, Jamie and the 2nd Doctor 3 - Terror of the Autons - The Third Doctor era really comes together here. 4 - Pyramid of Mars - Well to be honest you could pick any story from season 12-14 5 - Earthshock - make sure you don't research this one - it was one of the few times the show pulled of a huge surprise 6 - Mark of the Rani - This is a hard choice since there are not a lot of choices, The Two Doctors would also be a fun watch and if you are feeling fun, watch the 1996 movie.

Always supportive of a nu-Who fan trying the classic show. Also you made some very intelligent points about the differences and similarities with the modern show. The comparison of the relationship between Ace and the Doctor being similar to 12 and 13 is very perceptive. The Doctor in the classic show wasn’t flirting or crying or brooding. It was about the adventure and stopping a villain. I think the way it was shot is pertinent and you way you described is accurate. Modern Who is close up because it is more about the soap opera type interaction. I always think of modern who as “How do you feel” whereas Classic as “What are going to do?” . IMHO I think episodes I would choose are Tomb of the Cybermen, Genesis of the Daleks, Castrovalva, The Time Warrior, The chase, vengeance on Varos, Silver Nemesis

What's interesting to me is that I was brought up with classic who and found Nu Who to be really different and bit jarring. I'm used to it now but at the time it felt odd. Ace has been an influence on the writers of modern who as she was very different from earlier companions, less likely to scream more likely to blow something up!

Honestly, if you’ve never watched the classic series I would suggest (and this is also a challenge to all fans who haven’t done so) simply beginning with the very first episode ever! See Susan, the Doctor’s granddaughter going to Coal Hill school and the very first reveal of the Tardis. Then after that you might just proceed from the first episode ever all the way through one after the other. You will find yourself getting upset about the missing episodes that have been lost to time (a lot have been found, turned into cartoons or at the very least you can watch the still images with the audio today though). You will see the very first on screen regeneration and then the next and the next after that and how we eventually got to where we are today. Also if you’re having trouble with watching Doctor Who because of the visual effects and such things this will give you the opportunity to see how much they have progressed over time as opposed to watching through a strictly modern prospective. Because when you watch in black and white and expect little to nothing in visual effects then you begin to see how much the show has transformed you will get that mind blowing experience of watching something that feels new and amazing every time. Whether it’s a Dalek, a Sontaran , a Cyberman or a Sea Devil or anything else you will be amazed at how much things have changed. I have only provided a small sample of the benefits of watching the whole of the program straight through from the start, in order, up to today. There is also the movie to bridge the gap between the two eras so don’t forget about that either. I have neglected the main reason to watch the whole of the classic era in order though, and that’s so you might appreciate the modern era that much more and all the details that have been included in the modern era from the classic era. You will never look at the modern era the same way again if you do this. You also might find out what all the classic fans are talking about when it comes to the modern era as an extra bonus. If you’ve made it to the end of this comment I’ll assume you’re taking my suggestion seriously and that goes for anyone reading this. I truly wish you will find a new level of fandom and enjoyment in Doctor Who should you accept this challenge of watching straight through from the start. Good luck!

I think the perfect in-between would be the fast pace-edness (is that a word) of NuWho with the structure of Classic Who. Four, 20 minute episodes forming a full story, with a constant rising and falling of action, thrilling cliffhangers etc etc is how I think Dr. Who should be made in the current day. It really is the perfect format. Your analysis of the episode was really superb, I appreciated how honest it was, I think you nailed what a lot of what people feel when watching Classic Who. Excellent video

I will say that series 9 experimented with that and I really appreciated it. It's essentially split into 7 stories, The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar, Under the Lake/Before the Flood, The Girl Who Died/The Woman Who Lived, The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion, Sleep No More, Face the Raven/Heaven Sent/Hell Bent, and Husbands of River Song/The Return of Doctor Mysterio, and allowed for some further exploration of the plots and characters.

@@josieferrandino9742 I think the problem with Series 9… is the 45 minute format. Yes all the stories are 2 parters but (outside of the finale) they all suffer from the same problem. Part 1s are all padded out with filler so that we can get to that elusive Part 1 finale. In the original series it would take us 20 minutes to get there but with the new series format it takes over double that time and as a result the pacing of these stories grind to a halt. It takes 20 minutes for the Doctor to show up in the Magicians Apprentice, filler scenes are added into Under the Lake and the Zygon Invasion is just needlessly slow in general. Heaven Sent and Hell Bent sidestep this issue and as such are some of the best modern Dr Who imo but most NuWho definitely suffers from the ‘45 minute problem’ in a noticeable way. Series 9 isn’t an outlier, if anything it was trying to _solve_ the problem but in attempting to do so I feel it only served to exemplify it even more. Every series of the modern show suffers from it and if you could take the fast paced nature of the new show and put it into the format of the original, you would be able to get Dr Who in its most perfect form. Also before people say ‘just make it an hour long’ - Episodes in Flux were an hour long and they still suffered from all the exact same problems as the 45 minuters

Really glad you enjoyed Old School Doctor Who. Coal Hill Road School has significance in that the first episode way back in 1966 started in this school (when we meet the 1st Doctor who is travelling with his grand daughter, who goes to this school). Well spotted, yes Clara will also work at this school. Interesting that 7th Doctor has a Jeff Goldblum vibe, I never noticed that before but that's quite a good comparison. - Yup, no "next time" trailers in old Dr Who, each story is between 2-6 episodes, usually 4 episodes long & they end with cliff hangers, which are re-shown at the beginning of the next episode. - Interesting that Ace gives you Rose vibes. Up until Ace, all the human female companions from the current time (1966 - mid 1980's) were middle-upper class. Ace was the first companion to be from a housing estate, like Rose. - Good observation, classic Who feeling like a stage performance. The studio recording sessions were filmed with the same set up as other TV dramas & sit-coms, with the set & blocking made to accommodate those huge studio cameras (usually 3) on wheels you see in behind the scenes pics of Studio TV dramas & sit-coms, shot like a stage play, usually in scene order & in one day per episode with maybe 2-3 takes if their lucky, then outdoor shooting done on another day, on location. You'll notice it more if you watch 70's - 80's Doctor Who.

It's interesting to hear about your point of view of the pace from a modern era style of TV production. Just stumbled across your channel and have instantly subscribed! If you want to watch stories that fit the criteria of being important to the canon and/or a fan favourite, I would suggest the following (though stories with an asterisk round it denotes a poor story which is redeemable only for something major happening in it, i.e. makes it canon). Every story is in release order. 1st Doctor An Unearthly Child, The Daleks, The Aztecs, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, The Rescue, **The Chase,** The Time Meddler, The War Machines, The Tenth Planet. 2nd Doctor The Power of the Daleks, The Evil of the Daleks, The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Abominable Snowmen, The Ice Warriors, The Web of Fear, Fury from the Deep, The Mind Robber, The Invasion, The War Games. 3rd Doctor Spearhead from Space, Doctor Who and the Silurians, Inferno, Terror of the Autons, The Daemons, Day of the Daleks, The Sea Devils, The Three Doctors, Carnival of Monsters, The Green Death, The Time Warrior, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Planet of the Spiders. 4th Doctor Robot, The Ark in Space, Genesis of the Daleks, Terror of the Zygons, The Brain of Morbius, The Seeds of Doom, The Hand of Fear, The Deadly Assassin, The Face of Evil, The Robots of Death, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, Horror of Fang Rock, The Invisible Enemy, The Invasion of Time, Destiny of the Daleks, City of Death, Full Circle, State of Decay, The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis. 5th Doctor Castrovalva, Kinda, The Visitation, Earthshock, Arc of Infinity, Snakedance, Mawdryn Undead, Enlightenment, The Five Doctors, Frontios, Resurrection of the Daleks, Planet of Fire, The Caves of Androzani. 6th Doctor **The Twin Dilemma**, Attack of the Cybermen, Vengeance on Varos, Revelation of the Daleks. 7th Doctor **Time and the Rani**, Dragonfire, The Curse of Fenric, Survival. Terror of the Zygons is a great shout. Quite creepy in places too. Tom's first three seasons are the pinnacle of Classic Who. I recall watching The Time Warrior back in December 1973, so lucky to see such a pivotal serial in full, power cuts were so common at the time. We lost power just before Invasion of the Dinosaurs part 2 so I had to wait nearly 30 years to see it on VHS!

If you're only just starting with classic Who and aren't used to the pacing of older TV, I'd continue to ease yourself into it with the later stories first. Revelation of the Daleks is a good one, as are Resurrection of the Daleks and Attack of the Cybermen. Going back a bit further to probably the best ever Doctor, Tom Baker, from a modern perspective I'd say watch City of Death. It's clever, relatively fast paced, and in places very funny.

The best way to understand classic Doctor Who is to view it as if you are watching a play of the week, the camera set ups, sets, visual effects are limited by their access to technology and funds. The acting has to appear more theatrical especially in the earlier series (Hartnell & Troughton). If you want a well paced episode watch Pertwee's (No. 3) first episode Spearhead From Space. It's filmed entirely on film stock making it one of the best looking classic episodes. It's also the first episode to be filmed in colour and the first time the Autons are introduced. Also Doctor Who was produced on a very small budget compared to other Sci-Fi shows and it's modern reboot. That resulted in it sometimes looking very fake. I personally don't mind how bad it looked because it was more about the story and characters. My personal favourites which I'd recommend: The Tenth Planet, Enemy of The World, and City of Death.

Nice reaction. TV in the 50s, 60s,70,80s and the early 90s was produced and filmed with theatrical sensibilities in mind, British TV drama was the product of stage plays and adaptations of classic books. So it can feel quite "stagey". Hence the show was filmed using the multi-camera format and we get to see the action from different angles. Whereas TV of the latter 90s, 00s, 10s and today is produced and filmed with cinematic sensibilities, aping US production values. Hence single camera work and the viewer is placed at the heart of the action.

The Curse of Fatal Death has lots of Doctors in it, including Joanna Lumley as the first female doctor. Or you could go for The Five Doctors. Or anything with Tom Baker and Leela - The Face of Evil, The Talons of Weng Chiang The Autons - Jon Pertwee as the Doctor

One story for the other Classic Doctors: First Doctor: The War Machines. Its less theatrical than other stories of the b/w period; and points toward the UNIT era (plus,it's referenced in the 13th Doctor era) Second Doctor: Tomb of the Cybermen. Patrick Troughton on top form. Third Doctor: Spearhead from Space. A great introduction to the Third Doctor, as well as another iconic character. Fourth Doctor: Genesis of the Daleks. There are many notable stories from Tom Bakers era to choose from - but this is referenced in the RTD era,and is also a great origin story for the Daleks. Fifth Doctor: Earthshock. Fast paced,and a fan favourite. Sixth Doctor: Remembrance of the Daleks. There's never been another Dalek story like this one! Plus,it explains Remembrance's two Dalek factions - so is a sort of prequel. Eighth Doctor: The Movie. Its silly,but fun; and needs more love :)

Oh, and if you want a recommendation for something a bit more fast paced that feels slightly more New Who, then Caves of Androzani is a good shout. It's often considered one of the best Doctor Who stories overall (not just Classic Who, but the entire show). The director, Graeme Harper, actually returned loads to direct during the RTD era. It's more familiar, and it's just a great story.

Graeme Harper can just about direct anything with any budget, he's one of the most versatile Directors i've ever seen. So many great directors almost feel stuck, like they create a brand of filmaking and stick to it. Graeme Harper adapted, modernised, his styles are a beautiful evolution of what came before.

I don't know if you're still reading comments, but Remembrance is actually part of a trilogy. They are all "of the daleks" btw. Resurrection (the first one) Revelation (the second one) Remembrance (the last one) It's all a part of a massive Dalek civil war between Davros (Imperial Daleks) and the Supreme (Renegade Daleks) Definitely watch them if you wanna see the grand scale.
@monocle_mage9273
@monocle_mage9273 3 ай бұрын
Neat reaction. Remembrance was the 25th anniversary story, so that's way it's set in 1963, with a bunch of references to the first story (and yes, it is the same school that Clara later worked at). I think comparing classic who to a stage play is an interesting observation. I do think that, particularly when it comes to the older black and white stuff that can be a good mindset to have going in. Not only because of the camera techniques and cheap production values (though to be fair it wouldn't have looked quite as cheap on a 60s television screen), but also because most actors of the day would (I believe) have gotten their training on stage. As for other recommendations, I'll give you a possible trilogy. "Terror of the Autons" is the season opener for season 8 and though it builds on season 7 it also works well as a starting point for the 3rd doctor and sets up a lot of the thing his era is known for and as such features many important elements of Doctor Who lore. "The Time Warrior" is the opening story for season 11 and features the 3rd doctor meeting a new companion. It is also the first story featuring a certain recurring alien race (also seen in new who) and has the first mention of the name "Gallifrey" for the Doctors home planet. "Genesis of the Daleks" is perhaps THE all time classic Doctor Who story and gets referenced a lot in extended media and even a bit in New Who as it is both an excellent story on it's own and a very foundational one for the show's main villains. It features two companions one of which is the same character that was introduced with the 3rd Doctor back in Time Warrior now traveling with the 4th Doctor. I thought you might not want to jump directly into another dalek story though, hence the two earlier suggestions.

I love the 7th Doctor and Ace (especially how BRUTAL this incarnation is, despite the misleading Doctor-isms), but this era, while it has some great stories, definitely LOOKS the cheapest the show ever has. It's always looked quite silly, even in New Who, but you can tell the BBC were aggressively cutting the budget during this period. Compare the filming style of this era to something in the mid-70s and it's very clear that they have considerably less money to work with. Which is definitely a shame, because, as I say, the 7th Doctor and Ace are a great duo and they deserved so much better.

Do you want things 'easier' for your modern who tastes? Or do you want to fully jump into the (still good, but VERY far away from the new series) vibes of 60s black and white? :p Genesis of the Daleks is a great choice, especially after this one. But if you want to plundge, I would say- step back to the time where some companions barely believed in the doctor's machine having time travel. Where 'historical episodes' were PURE historical, and no sci-fi elements were involved other than the doctor and companions showing up. The first story to start to transform from that shell, and continue to change the doctor's beliefs into the more caring alien we know now, is... The Time Meddler. One of my personal favourites and a fan fav too for a reason or two. See how you could enjoy sci-fi when it wasn't always sci-fi! But it's up to you!

This was made for the 25th anniversary season, which is why there are so many references to the first episode. It not only uses many of the same locations. Coal Hill school (where Susan was a pupil and Ian and Barbara worked) and I M Forman's junk yard it takes place in the same year and month, so the First Doctor has just left shortly before this starts. By the way this is the first story that we see a Dalek levitate to go up stairs. For 25 years there had been loads of jokes about Daleks not being able to go up stairs. Oh, and no, it's not Nick Briggs doing the Dalek voices. He was only a youngster, not that much older than you when this was made and not working in tv back then. Oh did you pick up on the theme of racism? The far right group run by Nazi sympathiser Ratcliffe that Mike works with and the Daleks, the ultimate racists, whose racism has reached such a point that they can't even cope with differences in their own species (mind you thats like some people). Also the series was more graphic in how they were allowed to show death back then. You'd never have a close up of a dead man's face in new Who.

Oh, and just saying (feels appropriate for your channel) this story is another example of the 'Doctor Who was never political' bollocks with the racism stuff (the 'no coloureds' sign and the fascist bloke that Ace dealt with). The dalek civil war stuff is a great representation of that (the one group of blobs don't think the other group of blobs are pure enough, etc.). It's barely even subtext; it's just text, frankly.

I've just rewatched the whole Pertwee era with my family and it was delightful - and every episode was as political as hell - about ecological threats, authoritarianism, colonialism, corporate over-reach, you name it. It never jarred though because these themes were parts of good stories. I think people don't really dislike politics in fiction (unless a story takes place in a void then it's inevitable anyway) - what they object to is being lectured at the expense of good stories. I'm a wishy-washy leftist myself and agree with a lot of the political stance that RTD has brought into New Who but the way he does it even offends me as being patronising. *Looks to camera* "Racism's bad, mmmkay?"

I was completely surprised by it in ~1989. But then again, I was a new Doctor Who fan and I think I saw Remembrance a little before Genesis. In our place the TV was alternating between current seasons with the 7th Doctor and going through seasons of the 4th Doctor because they show it Monday to Thursday on and off for a few weeks at a time and 7th Doctor obviously didn't have enough episodes to keep doing that.

As a huge fan of classic who and the big finish audio dramas I can shed some light on some things. The special effects and what not were all low budget because the BBC didnt fork over a lot of money to support the show. By the 7th doctor series the bbc was actively trying to kill the show. The serial format is much better than nu who. Less close ups is actually preferable because the drama comes from the story not neccesarily the characters. You should check out william hartnell series as well. One of my favourite doctors.

The 7th Doctor isn't always that dark, but he is known to be the darkest, especially in the period following the show's cancellation when spin off novels and audio plays could push him even further than the TV show did. As for other recommendations, you've just seen a story from the end of the classic shows run, set in Coal Hill and thr junkyard, why not go back to the beginning? I recommend the very first episode "An Unearthly Child", followed by the second full serial "The Daleks". Unfortunately, the first full story is quite dull outside of the first episode, so for the sake of a video can be skipped, but I think the next thing you watch should be with the original Tardis team.

Because each part is 25 minutes, but has the intro, and a bit of recap, each story is essentially the length of a modern who 2-parter. Just for context. The pacing definitely is a little jarring at first, but you'll get used to it. A lot of people say to start with the first Doctor and go forwards, but since you found the pacing the effects jarring, I think you've done it the right way; start with the last of the classics first, and work back. City of Death staring the 4th Doctor is a good one, and in a rarity for someone who's only seen modern who features another Timelord as the main companion.
