Britain did more to end slavery than any other nation; the slave trade became illegal in England as early as the 11th century. In the 1700s English common law decided that that any slave who set foot in England was by default a free man. In 1807 the Royal Navy set up the West Africa Squadron to stop the slave trade. When Britain ruled the world this was its mission.

Technically it may have ended then. But you guys still had other ways to enslave people. Inheritance I think I heard.

And in places like Russia they rebranded slavery as "serfdom" which is just a nice term for saying "we own your livelyhood", thats why it lasted to early 1900s. That all resulted in the russian revolution and communism which isnt surprising, its like standing up to your slavers. Like in Haiti. Bit off topic but just a fun fact.

In Spain for several centuries, there were very few towns on the Mediterranean and Canary coasts, because Arab pirates arrived and took people as slaves, so they made the towns far from the sea.

Something to bear in mind is that back in the day you might rarely see a neighbouring settlement, let alone have clear knowledge of another country, let alone another continent… You ally with people who can get you things you want and sympathise with your goals, not necessarily people who share your continent with you… In fact there’s a good chance that if someone is your neighbour, you’re maybe more likely to have disputes than with someone from some far off land who pops by to trade… There is no united people of Europe or Asia or Africa at that time… Many of them hate each other lol. If their neighbours are bitter enemies, why should that change out of nowhere because other people show up to trade? Even if they invade… Maybe they still aren’t as mean as who was in charge before… We’ve got to realise that the world was very different even a couple hundred years ago…

Their dna would never have carried on if they had not been able to sell the people. Imo slavery would never have been ended if the globally dominant powers were from the Middle Eastern, African or Asian regions as the Europeans (especially the British) stopped the trade in most of these continents.

For some reason, this reminds me of the white girl that immigrated from South Africa to the United States. She identified as African-American (which she literally was) and, if you listen closely, you can still hear the complaining. Fun times.

"People weaker than others". Is that because we look the other way and allow it? It's unbelievable to me how anyone thinks they have rights over another person. Which animals behave that way? Are we still animals? Are we civilised? And what you said. From Yorkshire

A good video that will help you understand the struggle to end slavery in the USA is Over -Simplified , The Civil War ,it's 2 parts and done in a quick easy to follow format. The American Civil War cost 360,000 Union lives and 280,000 Southern lives to end slavery here. More died in this war than in WW2. Keep Learning Knowledge is power !
@travelinggypsy742Ай бұрын
More Americans died in the Civil War than all other wars the country engaged in as a whole on any soil. The United States officially banned the importation of slaves on January 1, 1808, the year after the U.K.'s 1807 statute prohibiting the importation of slaves. However, slaves in the colonies (excluding areas ruled by the East India Company) were not freed until 1838 - and only after slave-owners, rather than the slaves themselves, received compensation, and slavery officially ended in the States in 1865.

The USA ended it extremely quickly (4 years) but it was extremely costly in terms of manpower due to the civil war where nearly 1 out of every 10 men was either killed or wounded in the war. The British took several decades to end it, but it was more of a monetary sacrifice than a manpower sacrifice (granted they did lose about 400 or so sailors over their 100 year rampage against slavery)

Being a sailor in ships in those days was absolutely horrible. White people from europe were often forced or lured into these jobs for years with contracts, while most of the people couldnt even read the contract. the death rates and conditions were absolutely ridiculous. Please watch "The DANGEROUS Life of a Dutch VOC Ship Sailor in the 17th Century" if you are interested, such horrible stuff. It covers the dutch stuff, but it was pretty much the same for all the others. In britain they would literally kidnap people and bring them on ships, because alot of people didnt want to join because they knew it was hell.
@Alison-h8eАй бұрын
the British did end slavery first...took awhile they even had a part of the Navy set aside or a different contingent to actively hunt down slavers. Slave is actually from an older language in eastern Europe they are / were a people just known as Slavs. They were semi-nomadic and easy targets for just about any raider going through the countryside. Slavery is as old as humanity , just about every culture can trace it through it's history. We are all guilty of it as hard as it is to hear. We don't like to admit our past transgressions even if it wasn't us personally. it's a jagged , bitter pill , we have to swallow.
