FIRST TIME WATCHING GHOSTBUSTERS (1984) (REACTION)
I can't believe this movie came out 40 years ago and I only just watched it for the first time a few days ago.
PS. the Ghostbusters theme song has been stuck in my head for 5 days straight.

So in 1984, Sigourney Weaver was just coming off the success of Alien. The GHOSTBUSTERS cast wasn't sure they could get an actress with star power like Sigourney but asked her if she wanted to audition anyway. THEY WERE NOT PREPAIRED !!! Realizing that she didn't want to be known for only one type of role, miss Weaver proceeded to get down on all fours on stage and begin barking like a dog, in order to act out her idea of being possessed by Zuul. They hired her immediately !!!!!!

Tomeisawesome. Aliens and Ghost busters put Sigourney Weaver on the map of fame in 1979 and 1984. She played two different female film characters. Ellen Ripley and Dana Barrett / Zuul " The GateKeeper".

"I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought." That is my favorite line in the movie. Fun fact: the original design for the library ghost was TOO intense. The producers didn't want to use it, so they kept it in storage; another producer liked it, and wanted to use it. That was used as Jerry's final form in the horror comedy Fright Night.

Dr. Venkman's study at the beginning is sorta viable. he is telling the girl she is correct, but she continues to be wrong. after repeatedly telling the guy he is wrong, and also shocking him, he actually got one right and may have gotten more right with more negative reinforcement

Yes, I agree that his actions with the guy might be a viable experimental protocol... except that she would need to be the control. That means he should be recording her results accurately in order to compare the guy's results against pure chance.

@@Mr.Ekshin ur right, there does need to be a control. there could already be a control group, he may have already tested 2 students accurately. Most people also don't notice his confused face when she somehow guesses "Figure Eight" correctly, even though that's NOT one of the symbols in the Zener test cards. There's a Circle, Plus sign, 3 Wavy Lines, Square, and Star. There's no Figure Eight symbol in the deck but she still somehow got it right.

There are so many reasons this remains such a beloved classic, even after 40 years! The Car, the actors and acting, scriptwriting, music, direction etc.. They took and put in a LOT of Love into this film which made it a definite, "Lightning in a Bottle". There are many small clues with the writing, such as been noted that although he keeps locking himself out of his apartment, he is the Keymaster.. There are sutble things such as the elevatorscene when switching it on, or when Peter gets slimed.. and the reactions of his ehm , friends and collegues.

This is a movie that gets better and better every time you rewatch it. You just keep catching more and more little jokes. It's crazy how many gags there are. Lines you're not really thinking about when you're just watching, because they seem like normal dialogue, or silly stuff happening in the background, or you're focused on one character and the other character is doing something you didn't notice.

Both the guy that played the cop in the jail (Reginald VelJohnson) that told them that the mayor wanted to see them and the guy that played Walter Peck would go on to play similar roles in Die Hard as Al Powell and the scummy reporter. Bit of trivia. The actor of Walter Peck got a bad burn from the Marshmallow scene. They used shaving cream and they didnt realize he was allergic to Menthol and they accidentally used Menthol shaving cream and so he ended up with a burn rash where they dumped it on him. I would stick my head in to see the ending of THE NATIONAL, the human sacrifice scene in TEMPLE OF DOOM, and Sigourney Weaver in the red dress in GHOSTBUSTERS. Stay Puft Marshmallows are still available. They were created (for the public) after this movie. The company still makes them in batched periodically. Peter's "creepy" persona was a rampant inclusion into a great number of movies by filmmakers & sometimes actors throughout their Hollywood films thru the 80s & 90s. Just have to expect it from that era. The behavior was not criticized much during that time and was often taken lightly as unreal or exaggerated. Gozer & "It's" minions were not ghosts (They were God & Demi-gods? Big dog was more accurate in this film).

That first comment that you read was pretty apt. I mean, I was a child when it came out, so it probably made more sense for me to like it then, but looking back, it would be pretty ridiculous if it wasn't so good. In the historical progression of things, maybe we were just more welcoming and forgiving about goofy wackiness without overthinking it too much. We must've just genuinely had less expectations, and were happier to get what we could because we didn't know any better yet, and didn't have anything else for comparison yet? I honestly don't know if that was better, or just tragically sad of us compared to now, but whatever. So, the second one is even wackier, but if I'm being honest, I kind of love it for that, and think it's more endearing. There was the all female reboot a while back. I didn't see it, but it wasn't for any specific reason. I just missed it, but people have said some bad things about it, but that might've at least partially been misogynistic haters. I don't know. The really liked new one "Afterlife" from a few years ago, and there's a new new one very soon, I think.
@elfteiroh

About the reboot, yeah, the fact it’s an all-woman group is definitely one of the main reason some people attack it. But there’s also the wackiness that I think they reproduced it well, and yeah, that definitely is harder to take in for a lot of people now. :X

Character Growth? They started a paranormal college program that collapsed and they were let go of their jobs. So the Ghostbusters took it to the next level and it grew larger and larger, from that point. Peter Venkman went from getting slimed in the hallway and leading to the battle against Gozer. Critiquing a movie from 40 years ago does not have the best special effects because they weren't available yet. In the 1980's, there were popular cartoons/movies like Star Wars, He-Man & the Masters of the Universe, Voltron, Gummy Bears, My Pet Monster, M.A.S.K., Muppet Babies, Pee Wee Herman, David the Gnome, Teddy Ruxpin, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Beetlejuice, Droids, Ewoks, Alvin and the Chipmunks, ThunderCats, C.O.P.S., etc., etc.

Your appreciation of Supernatural earned you a sub. Especially since my kid just named her new kitten Castile (?sp). We’ve watched it multiple times.

Your French is good enough. :) If you ever come North to Montréal, we could have some conversation. What I love is that, despite being a comedy, the dialog are written like real people speak. The 2015 remake, if the preview was accurate, was written more like a stand-up comedy show.

PG in the 80s actually meant something.

16:02 "Are they gonna _kiss_ or what?" Well, it's never made explicit -- the film _is_ PG after all -- but I get the strong impression that part of this whole process is the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper getting together in the way that keys and locks do... 🔒🤐🔑

Most people don’t know that Dan Ackroyd is big into the paranormal. Even had a run in with the men in black etc… This all was adapted from an original script he wrote. “Are they going to kiss or what”… well sex magick and rituals are a thing lol If you have Netflix check out a series they made called “the movies that made us”… there’s a whole Ghostbuster episode about all the background and filming etc… its awesome

It is the EPA business to look into things so Waltet Peck is doing his job. Venkman did not help the situation and with Peck's own hybris it was not a good mix.

As this was their first customer (don't know if Dana counts), the guys were still figuring out the best way to chase ghosts. Splitting up was an option, albeit a bad one, especially for Peter Venkman.
