FIRST TIME WATCHING THE SHINING (REACTION)
In this video, I react to the classic horror movie: The Shining. This film follows Jack Torrance as he becomes the winter caretaker for an isolated hotel and he moves in with his wife, Wendy, and his son, Danny. As the days progress, Danny's visions get worse and Jack becomes insane.

Dr Sleep is a very good movie/book on its own but as a sequel to The Shining it slmost feels like a parody, like a joke that got out of hand znd went too far. Its as if Stephen King got so fed up by being asked to do a sequel thst he came up with the silliest thing he could imagine snd told the public "here's the sequel now leave me alone FO".

Jack has the shining, but Danny really, really has it. The hotel is using the shining to get Jack to kill Danny so that his shining can be absorbed into the hotel. As Jack falls deeper towards the evil deed, the hotel begins shining brighter - bright enough for Wendy to begin seeing it, too. Tony is, of course, Danny's protector. When Jack goes all in on getting to chopping, Tony kicks it into overdrive by taking over Danny in order to wake up Wendy, give her a weapon, and get them tf out.

3:00 Stephen King was staying at the Stanley Hotel in suite 217. He and his wife stayed there on vacation at the end of the season when no one else was staying in the hotel, and the staff were getting the hotel ready to close. For the film, the hotel exterior is the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood, Oregon. Although the interior shots were done on sets, those sets were inspired by the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite.

Jack Torrance having memorized the layout of the labyrinth would have been a GREAT plot point! Luckily, Danny got to get away safely. In the original novel, there was no maze. There were, however, hedge sculptures in the shape of wile animals, like bears and giant wolves. And they were kind of like the Weeping Angels in Dr. Who. You really dídn't want to turn your back on them... or even take your eyes off them. (shudder).

It would behoove you to give the director's cut of Doctor Sleep a go--the director did the Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and Fall of the House of Usher series on Netflix and they are all top tier. It's basically, "what happens to Danny as a grown up?" I do applaud your question early on about "what would you eat?" And of course we get the litany of menu options shortly thereafter from Mr. Halloran, a great character for his guidance and tutelage and his gastronomical expertise.

SPOILER ALLERT: Kubrick had a different vision for the film than King. He didn't want to bring topiary monsters to life, electing to go with a hedge maze instead. The change in plot really begins with Halloran's death. In the novel, he becomes the hero to the rescue.. Kubrick wanted to take the audience by surprise, surprising King fans with a twist of his own. In watching the ending for the first time, no one could know how it was going to play out.

Oddly enough, Jack Nicholson never appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, or any other late-night talk show for that matter. He rarely did television interviews at all. The last sit-down talk show he did was an episode of "The Mike Douglas Show" in 1976. This is from Jack's IMDb "Self" page. If anyone knows of any other sit-down, mainstream, terrestrial TV interviews let IMDb know.

Plus kids love stimulation. If the TV was on Danny would watch it and likely not be asking to leave to get his fire engine truck.

I think the reasoning behind Hallorann dying was that his shining power is much less powerful than Danny's. We get clues to this during the movie. Danny says Hallorann told him that the things he sees in the hotel are like pictures in a book. Hallorann still works in the hotel even though his shining allows him to see some of what's there. If he was experiencing things on the level that Danny is, would Hallorann really still be working there all this time? Grady tells Jack that Danny is attempting to bring Hallorann into the situation. Danny is contacting Hallorann because Hallorann does not have the power to reach out to Danny. When Hallorann gets to the hotel, his shining ability doesn't show him anything. This means he shows up at the hotel at a big disadvantage. Jack hears someone coming but Hallorann has no warning that anything is going on.

The only thing I don’t like about the movie, compared to the novel, is the lack of a build to Jack’s madness/possession. There's a Stephen King World Fan Theory that says that Carrie White (from Carrie) may have been Jack's illegitimate daughter. We do know from Dr. Sleep (the sequel) that Jack slept around a bit. You do need to watch Dr. Sleep. It was Stephen King's attempt to get rid of all the insane/cool fan theories about this movie. It kind of tells you exactly what was happening. Shelley Duval deserved an Academy Award for this movie. You really see someone who is an emotional wreck at the start and she is stripped down completely raw. Instead she won an overacting Razzie. Boo. "I've been uncomfortable a lot in this movie." Kubrick is smiling in his grave. Yes. Danny was trying to bring "an outside party" into the situation. In the book, Danny screams for help. In the movie, he sends Halloran scary images. In the book, Tony was Danny from the future (his middle name was Anthony). But it's also suggested that he's his Contact: sort of like the connection to the Other Side. "OK that was really loud" when Danny hides in the cabinet and knocks the dishes over. There's another Fan Theory that Danny did that on purpose. He was essentially hunting Jack and trying to draw him to him so he could get him in the maze.
