Commodus was popular among the people in reality, he was possibly a bastard legitimated by Aurelius, and its unlikely he killed his father. We dont know cause there is no trusty sources, as often for antiquity history. But we knows Commodus was seen as a bad emperor later in Rome's history for political reasons, and as Nero and some other emperors he was declared damnatio aeternae - erased from Roman history. We should be inspired by this way of seeing history for some of our current 'leaders'.

Power is always dangerous. It attracts the worst, corrupts the best. Power is only granted to those who are prepared to lower themselves to pick it up... Also, this movies ending with the sunset is symbolic because it is known after the events of Commodus rule. The Senate failed to regain sovereignty as Aurelius wished. Instead, emperors were often bought into power by senatorial favour and kept there through greedy local leaders of towns as well as conniving appointed governors of nearby provinces.

One of the true tragedies of this film was Oliver Reed’s, Proximo, last film. He died during production. He was to bury the figurines at the end of the film, but because of his IRL death, they had Juba bury them and killed Proximo off; it’s actually a CGI face of Proximo for his death scene. Also, Jack Gleason, Joffrey of GoT, drew acting inspiration from Commodus’ character for his role as Joffrey.

I have fond memories of this movie. I was a senior in high school when it was released, and I saw it with other members of my high school class at a New Year's party. It was only the second R-rated movie I ever saw (after Braveheart) and the first that I didn't watch with my parents. Interestingly, while the movie's version of Commodus was the perfect movie villain, the historical Commodus was much, much more twisted and depraved.

Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. Befire Russell Crowe was cast as Maximus, Hugh Jackman was considered to play the role, but dropped out to play Wolverine in the Live action X MEN movie. Interestingly enough, Crowe was considered to play Wolverine. Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, Tom Sizemore, and Antonio Banderas were considered as well. The opening scene was filmed in Surrey England, the gladiator training school was filmed in Morocco, and the scenes involving Ancient Rome were filmed in Morocco, which lasted 19 weeks. Oliver Reed, Proximo, died of a heart attack while filming on May 2, 1999. It was dedicated in his memory. Crowe sustained several injuries during filming and almost died as a direct result of them. While fighting Tigris Of Gaul, the tiger almost killed Russell Crowe. It was a close call for him.

@Gary Gregg - true! But let's not forget about "Bread and circuses" - Roman practice of providing free wheat to Roman citizens as well as costly circus games and other forms of entertainment as a means of gaining political power... Simple view > as long as people are entertain, and have something to eat and have roof over the head - they are not gonna revolt as such. In a way, applicable to the current age too.

Ridley Scott makes all great movies! His first two sci-fi movies set the standard for all sci-fi afterwards, except for John Carpenter's, The Thing! But Ridley did alien in 79 and Bladerunner in 81 or 82, and still nothing compares! And his movies are all special and practical effects, no CGI! So much better than CGI! Oliver Reed is his teacher. He's old school Hollywood. He died before the film was finished, so some of his duologue and time in film, is actually CGI!😮😮😮

Wonderful idea, Magy, introducing Laura to this movie! I remember how much you enjoyed it. "I feel like in war, even if you win, you lose" - that's such a poignant commentary, proud of you! Both Maximus and Proximo have such magnetic personalities, inspiring their men no matter the situation. Maximus captured the hearts of everyone through his actions, his just character, fantastic lines like "What we do in life echoes in eternity", "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained?!" or "Proximo, are you in danger of becoming a good man?" Joaquin Phoenix did a fantastic job, played this role with such talent, managing to make everyone hate Commodus and in a certain way, pity him for what a flawed man he was, his insecurities and fears burdening him for his entire life. The scene where Maximus starts hallucinating, seeing his family, accompanied by that musical score - guaranteed to make you tear up, no matter how many times you see it. In the end, he was reunited with them. I really liked hearing your thoughts about the ending, why even if it was a sad ending, Maximus had to die for the movie to transmit that powerful message. Thank you for the beautiful reaction ❤

Okay, ladies... I have a change of pace and a total laugh/snifflefest (you will laugh and you will cry) to recommend for you... If you like "family films" with a nice story (I assume you do, since you recently reacted to Hoochie or Hibachi or Hitachi or whatever that dog's name is), and if you love animals (again, I'm pretty sure you do), and if you enjoy when the animals talk, then I think you're gonna like these : Babe (1995) Babe : Pig In The City (1998) Unless you've seen them already somehow, then I guess that settles that... 🙂

Lots of tension toward the end. Love a movie that can make me care enough to feel tense.

I recently watched a multi-part documentary series on the Roman Colosseum, and Commodus was even worse than he was here.
