The real Katsumoto was a man by the name of Saigo Takamori. he was posthumously pardoned by Emperor Meiji (restoring his and his famlies honor). They made a statue to honor him and every year Japan has a festival commorating the battle of Shiroyama. Japan views him as a tragic folk hero and yes, his nickname is the Last Samurai

Great points about the second person. They needed to strike with power, accuracy and without hesitation. Failing in any of these aspects would prolong your suffering. So, being chosen for the task indicated a high degree of trust and respect for the second person.

The person chosen to cut off the head of the person committing seppuku was known as the "kaishaku" and as being chosen kaishaku was a great honour, failing as kaishaku was considered a grave dishonour.

It is a terrible method of death, that has its own tragic beauty. I like how the first instance of seppuku is portrayed with the general slightly hesitating to recover after the first thrust, thus prompting Katsumoto to act. In storytelling, it silently narrates the custom without being cheesy. I never researched the protocols involved, but the second persons role would be to finish the suffering before the one committing suicide could scream, thus preserving honor. It’s one of a myriad of customs throughout humanity that, while terrible, make sense when you see it from the cultural point of view.

This is always going to be an excellent movie and your reaction to it was just as good. Like you pointed out, Magy, it's beautiful to see how Nathan slowly learns their ways, their language, and in turn they open up to him. Getting over the trauma and shame which resulted from the fights against native americans was another satisfying thing to watch, even more so when you see just how much it ended weighing on his mind at the start of the movie. Seeing just how much Katsumoto influenced Nathan and towards the end, the pain in his eyes when he helped Katsumoto get the honorable ending he wished for, that's something that's very hard to forget and iconic lines like "Perfect. They are all perfect" together with "Tell me how he died. - I will tell you how he lived" only serve to make those scenes even more heartbreaking. Thank you for the emotional reaction, it was just perfect, every second of it. You did a great job! ❤

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life. So many people dismiss this and Dances with Wolves as “White Savior” movies but they’re actually the opposite. They save Nathan by giving him a life of peace, serenity and purpose. He helps by telling them the enemy strategies but that’s about it. Ken Watanabe should’ve gotten an Oscar for this movie, I cry every time I hear him say “They are all perfect”.😭😭 Not to mention Hans Zimmer gives us one of the most beautiful and underrated scores in film history, I listen to the track “A Way Od Life” during meditations. Also the scene in which he ends the duel with Ujio with a draw by completely clearing out his mind is a real life technique. It’s called Mushin or No Mind, the best way to describe it is that it’s exactly like Ultra Instinct from Dragonball Super. I felt it myself when I was training in Kenpo Karate as a teenager, my sensei and his other instructors swore by The Last Samurai and told me to pay attention to that scene specifically. Also Hiroyuki Sanada (who many know as Scorpion from Mortal Kombat 2021) absolutely steals the show as Ujio. Not only is he an amazing actor but he is IN REAL LIFE one of the world’s best and most renowned swordsman. He’s so skilled that stuntmen and coordinators actually go to him for advice sometimes.

What appears to be the beheading is a ceremony called seppuku or hara-kiri. It was a voluntary suicide by using a dagger to stabbed itself in the right side of the stomach and cut it to the other side and drag it upwards. Then another samurai beheaded to end the torture. In Japanese beliefs of the time, this was an honorable act until the end of World War II.

This is my favorite film, I think. It makes me tear up every time. The poster and the trailer, maybe, make you think about just dumb samurai action and Tom Cruise being awesome as always. But it's much deeper than that. It is about honoring what is true and best, redeeming what is lost, and sacrificing the body and present happiness to save the eternal soul--of the person, the culture and the nation. The music, the acting, the fights and the cinematography all serve those purposes very effectively. It is a profound and beautiful film. Good reaction, ladies!

The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise is a redo of a 1968 movie called "The Last Swedish Man" starring Bruce Lee. Bruce fights against the vikings and is wounded after killing a viking warrior. Bruce then goes to live in the fallen viking's home and is tended to and cared for by the fallen viking's wife in her home with her two children who know that Bruce killed their father. Bruce then falls in love with the wife of the man he killed and becomes his children's step father. And then after a final battle, Bruce lives in Sweden with his new family and their love becomes a symbol for love.

Great react - thank you. This is one of my favorite movies. I love the call to duty and sacrifice. It is also important to remember that the film’s perspective on Samurai is highly romanticized. The Samurai were cruel feudal lords who governed a caste system for a very long time. For a more accurate portrayal read Shogun by James Clavell or catch one of the two miniseries by that name; one older and one pending on Hulu at the time I right this. In the meantime, keep’em coming!!

The execution scene was well done. The condemned kneels, and often takes their top off partly and wraps the arms of the shirt under their knees so that they fall forward, honorably. Then then pierce their gut to release the soul, and a second person (someone who they respect and respects them) ends the suffering if the kill is not immediate. No suffering, so a close friend is honored to do it. "Bushido, the Soul of Japan" published over a century ago talks of it.

There's a lot of ideas in this movie that I think are important to think about. Sure, it's a great story about a man finding some peace after suffering for a long time. But the deeper ideas are why it has real emotional depth. We do not need to live like the samurai (and samurai in reality were not a bunch of honorable warriors), but we have lost some of the understanding that made them able to find the kind of peace Algren did. Some of the ideas in bushido, "no mind", "they are all perfect"...these are all things worth thinking about. I know for a fact that "no mind" is a real thing, where you allow your subconscious mind to guide your actions instead of making conscious decisions. In martial arts, it is the only way to fight at your highest level. As for Katsumoto's final words, he isn't referring to just the blossoms he just saw. He is talking about every blossom he ever saw in his life. I hope I can understand that thought someday.

One thing that I appreciate about this film is that the romance is very understated and played down and I respect that decision immensely as I believe having it be more prevalent in the story would have weakened the film drastically. There are two scenes, both near the end where we see Taka look at Algren as she is about to sleep and she closes the partition to her bedroom, and I remember having a huge sigh of relief as that was the perfect thing to do. The second scene was when Taka was dressing Algren in her husband's armour and you could palpably feel the emotion between them and then they had one very light kiss and nothing more and again that was beautifully handled and could easily have been completely ruined

It’s such a great movie and I would highly recommend reacting to Swords of vengeance: Fall of Ako castle which involves the 47 ronin (masterless samurai) exacting their revenge, it’s in Japanese language with subtitles

Other great Samurai movies; Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress (big influence on Star Wars) Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Kagemusha, Ran, 13 Assassins, Hari Kiri, The Samurai Trilogy, so many. A movie set during the same time period as The Last Samurai, is When The Last Sword Is Drawn.

You need to watch and react to Memoirs of a Geisha, it's such an incredible movie. It gives an insight to that world, which was a big part of the Japanese culture before too. It keeps teaching us how incredible their culture is and the movie is really good. The same actor is in it, Ken Watanabe and he has a fantastic role

I recommend Magy watching a Hong Kong comedy movie called 唐伯虎點秋香 （Flirting Scholar) , its so popular comedy in China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam … even though this movie 30years ago. Now, many teenage watch it still feel funny. This movie became a legend. The main actor is Stephen Chow, he is famous actor, director until now.

I'm glad you ladies love this movie I saw this movie day one when it came to theaters I washed it six times and theaters the scene at the end with the horses and then riding into battle the entire concrete at the theater or shaking until powerful the base was from those horses feet when they're riding into battle at the end of the movie it was this is a beautiful Masterpiece of a storyline Tom Cruise was a phenomenal job I will tell you how he lived
