A digital body double was created for the remaining scenes involving actor Oliver Reed's character Proximo (the old gladiator) due to Reed's death during production. Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totaled a little over 270 Maltese lira (almost 450 GBP; about 590 USD). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. He was 61 years old

Commodus stabbed him in the back, round the side, near around the armpit / rib cage region. And the blade was long. So while it may have hit an artery, it definitely punctured his lung. And being the side the lung would have collapsed on - crushed his heart. So either way, he was screwed from that wound, I don't think surgeons back then knew how to fix lung problems like that.

In the days of Ancient Rome the Gladiators were basically the world’s first professional athletes, women would actually pay money to get to sleep with them. Not all of them were slaves, some were former soldiers and even a few emperors fought in the arena. Also; the actor playing Maximus’s last loyal man is Tommy Flannigan, aka Chibs from Son’s of Anarchy.

Now you have to see SPARTACUS! (The movie AND the show!) and HBO's Rome. Maximus was not real. Commodus and Marcus Aureleius were, and were very similar to how the were portrayed in this movie. Commodus did fight in the arena, but they were all fixed and ended with his opponents surrendering to him. He wasn't killed in the ring, the conspiracy got one of his slaves to strangle him in his bath. The events in the movie would have taken place around 192 AD Spartacus was the real gladiator who escaped and mounted a slave revolt that destabilized The Republic in 73 BC until he was defeated by a young Julius Caesar. Then HBO's Rome is the story of how Caesar took over the Republic and declared it an Empire a few decades later.
@Cosmo-Kramer3 жыл бұрын
To clarify what chrisleebowers wrote here, it was not Julius Caesar who, "declared it an Empire". Julius Caesar was behaving like an emperor in some ways, but he was murdered by a conspiring confederation of senators in 44 BC so that he would NOT make such a declaration. His murder fractured the republic in two, and war raged for nearly two decades, when Julius' adopted son (and blood great-nephew) Octavius led his side to victory in 27 BC, pronouncing himself the first emperor of Rome, under the name, Augustus Caesar. He ruled the Roman Empire until his death in 14 AD. Which means he was Emperor when Jesus lived--but probably knew nothing of the Nazarene as the problems Jesus was causing for the Romans were provincial, in Roman-protected, Judea, and didn't get past the ears of the roman governor of that land, Pontius Pilate. And then we had the Middle Ages. Followed by the American revolution. Then the Cuban Missile crisis. Followed by rap taking over MTV. The rise and fall of Lindsay Lohan. And here we are today.

If you want a similar Ridley Scott movie, try Kingdom of Heaven (2005 movie about the Crusades). But be sure to do the Director’s Cut. It’s probably the most extreme example of a difference between a theatrical and extended cut of any film. The directors cut takes a 7/10 movie up to a 10/10 imo. The studio cut nearly an hour (I think there’s like 48 minutes of difference between the two versions) of content and a lot of the more philosophical/introspective scenes in favor of focusing more on the action adventure stuff (which, while good, isn’t what makes the film stand out).

I wonder if Commodus isn't also trying to marry his sister because he's trying to be like the king of the Roman Gods Jupiter/Jove who married his sister Juno queen of the gods and goddess of marriage and motherhood (the original Greek versions being Zeus who married his sister Hera - in both versions they're also sort of cousins since they're parents were brother and sister as well). Though if he's trying to be like the gods as well as being emperor (who I think were sort of seen as being like gods though maybe not actual gods) then he's completely missed the point of the myths - incest isn't approved of because the gods did it, it's called incest and is condemned because only the gods can do it, and in both roman and greek mythology the one things that makes the majority of the gods mad is a mortal acting like he or she is a god.
