@markbartoszek85853 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your point about bringing back real stunts. You can never fake real stunt work with CGI and make it look believable. However, True Lies represents an era of action filmmaking that is (unfortunately) long gone. This level of stunt work, miniature effects, and pyrotechnics are just not seen anymore. Hollywood will not take those risks when they can just play it safe with CGI. Don't take my word for it. I recently watched a live stream of GoldenEye with the film's director (Martin Campbell), and he pretty much said the same thing.

So Arnold was on a high with a string of hits through the 80s and early 90s. He made his first real comedy film "Twins" with Danny DeVito in 1988 and decided to alternate between action films and comedy films... Unitl his first major flop in 1993 (I won't give away the title in case you want to watch it so you're not biased going in). It was panned by critics and moviegoers as well as being hurt by the first Jurassic Park film which was released at the same time. Many thought this was the beginning of the end for Arnold's career. And then he made True Lies. Arnold was definitely back! And with James Cameron directing they could do no wrong! This movie reestablished Arnold's winning track record with the perfect balance of action, drama and comedy! Aside from the main cast, Bill Paxton steals the show as the sleazy salesman- this is one of my favourite roles of his. Bit of trivia- the bridge being blown up was miniatures as well as the harrier jets for that scene. The voice of the pilot who asks if "the missiles are going to set off the nukes" is actually director James Cameron. The close up shot of Jamie Lee Curtis hanging onto Arnold's hand, hanging from the helicopter was a real stunt she preformed herself!

Interesting fun fact, but Arnold almost died for real when filming this movie. During the horse chase scenes, there was the roof they filmed on top of for that sequence where he hangs by the reins in the movie due the horse not willing to make the jump in the movie. That actually wasn't the stunt but it was the building that almost ended his life. During one take, the horse actually panicked when it was about to run near the edge of the building. Arnold managed to see this coming and was able to dismount and jump off the horse into the safety cushions on the set. If he had stayed on longer while the horse really did continue freaking out, he would have actually been bucked off the roof of the building.

Did you know this is actually a remake? The original French movie is La Totale. Same concept and the Uzi shooting everyone down the stairs is directly from that one, as well as other moments.

"you know what I said about Arnold being more subtle.. I was wrong"... ... and this was before he climbs into a Harrier jet and blows up a building

Everything is so over the top now that people don't realise this movie is meant to be a parody

This is one of the most fun and best action movies of the 90s. I was a teen when it came out and they don't make em like this anymore. You should check out The Rock (1996) if you haven't seen it. It's up there with this movie, T2 and Con Air as best 90s action movies.
