To explain the title, since the film doesn't: The idea is that Japan, having lost WW2 and suffered greatly as a result of it, were essentially put back to 'one' following it's end, back to the very fundamentals of a society. Everyone was starving, sick and living among rubble, they had virtually nothing at all. Godzilla's appearance is now threatening to take them to 'MINUS one', to take away the tiny scraps they've managed to cling onto, like Noriko was 'taken away' from Shikishima. Post-war Japan had almost nothing left, and Godzilla is going to take even that 'almost nothing' away from them. Hence: 'Godzilla: Minus One'

The saying goes that the war actually set Japan back to zero after their surrender and defeat. Now having Godzilla appear not even 3 years after their surrender and bring back that PTSD through his "heat ray" which, coincidentally, resembles the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Godzilla will set Japan even further back, "minus one".

This is the scariest Godzilla has ever been. I've watched it here in Germany 3 weeks after it's opening release, and the cinema was STILL fully packed. When Godzilla came on screen 3 minutes in, the audience visibly reeled back. What a start to probably the best Godzilla film ever, even surpassing the original. There were several moments in the film where I was moved to tears, something I haven't expected from a Kaiju movie ever. The story and the human element in this are outstanding, that I might dare say this is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my almost 40 years of life.

I was born in 1964 (not that that really has anything to do with anything), and I grew up with all the Godzilla movies and loved them all. the scariest one I ever saw at the theater was Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (a.k.a. Hedora). In the mid 1980's I served in the Navy and visited Japan a few times, and of course, knowing the history between the U.S. and Japan since WWII. and considering the relationship America has had with Japan since then, I was always struck with the Godzilla movies; how Japan used Godzilla as a metaphor for Atomic/Nuclear weapons at the beginning, and how Godzilla eventually became an ally with Man as he fought against other Kaiju (especially Hedora; as a metaphor for pollution) in later movies. and since the first ever Godzilla movie, Americans not only love the movie(s), but also cheer for Japan's victory against any kaiju that attacks them. Only those geniuses at ToHo could think of the idea of using such a destructive force as atomic weapons, and turn it into a "monster" for them to deal with! And something else: this Godzilla's atomic breath was such an unexpected surprise! not just his breath melting whatever he uses it against, but CAUSING an atomic explosion with it himself! Fantastically done!

Fun fact: In the novel it is stated that Godzilla noticed Shikishima at the start of the movie but didn't attack him because Shikishima was not doing anything to provoke him so Goji decided to let him live and ignored him. Godzilla started killing people on the island because they attacked him first. Also the situation with him killing Taki can be easily explained by the fact that Taki used light on Godzilla what provoked the creature. Godzilla could consider this as intimidation tactic or challenge but the most possible explanation is that Godzilla as creature that lives in deep water hates light. Also the novel states that Godzilla had symbiotic relationship with people on the Odo island so he for sure was somewhat accepting humans. I think he became so agressive towards them because he knows they are the ones who dropped a bomb on him which caused him a lot of pain Sorry for bad english...

@Fang1st
@Fang1st Ай бұрын
Few things: Yes, Godzilla is originally a villain, created as a representation of a nuclear bomb following the end of WWII, being a creature of pure destruction, but strangely also a symbol of life as well. Hollywood's Godzilla is made to be a monster that keeps balance in the world by attacking other monsters. They don't explain it very well, but that's their wording that he is the protector of earth. This movie did play in America as well in theaters, I don't know about other countries. It played normally, and also in black and white, named: Godzilla minus one minus color. Godzilla averages in size between 50 meters to 100 meters in size, sometimes going up to 120 meters. There are different sizes as well, like the Godzillasaurus or Godzilla Earth, but that's the average size range for all the Godzilla movies. The group planning the defense against Godzilla are happy that this time they can actually make a difference and not just be facing certain death like in the war. It's a message on how little the Japanese military cared for their soldiers and just needlessly threw them at America to do as much damage as possible despite the war clearly ending in their defeat. This time the plan is to fight Godzilla and keep them alive as well, so with a chance of victory and survival they are eager to defend their country and loved ones. Yes, that original music is Godzilla's theme. Shikishima was planning on kamikaze diving into Godzilla's mouth, but he wasn't going to do it until the plan with the ships went through, he wasn't going to do it unless the plan failed, though he figured it would. The plan to sink Godzilla to the bottom was to crush him under the sudden change in pressure from sinking so fast. If they left him down there then he'd have time to adjust to the pressure, so they had to rise him fast to de-pressure him at the same intense speed. When he chewed through the balloons he was simply trying to recover from the damage he received. The 'neck thing' is never explained in the movie itself, but it's theorized (and possibly confirmed by the creators, haven't looked for any statements.) that it is a G-Cell that infected her body. (G-Cell = Godzilla DNA) It's one of the plausible theories as to how she survived since G-Cells have incredible regenerative properties in most every Godzilla movie. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
@HolyCrossed
@HolyCrossed Ай бұрын
So a few questions. Will Godzilla return in that Universe? Is the G-cell good or bad, like will she turn into a monster; die; or do you only get the good side effects like hyper regeneration? Also since there were other people during the blast does that mean multiple people have the G-cell or just her?

Maybe something like Godzilla Raids Again where we see many years later Godzilla regenerates and fights with another atomic-charged monster, hopefully Anguirus. As for the G-Cells we aren't sure on that. I'd assume it would be just a healing factor for those who survived, making them superhuman in a way of just being able to heal super fast or from death if not eradicated. Just a thought process but at the moment we don't know for sure.

Here’s a fun fact I heard about this Godzilla: when he attacked the soldiers on Odo island, I think it was only because he was provoked doing it because you see, Godzilla during that time lived in harmony with the Odo island locals, who would give him food like fish. When that soldier shined a light on him, he got aggravated and attacked, he also didn’t kill Kōichi while he was in the plane even when he saw him and only attacked because everyone else shot him. The title of “Minus One” is that Japan was in a state of zero after the atomic bomb was dropped on them and when Godzilla showed up, he brought them to a state of minus one or negative.

I think because people endlessly dropping bombs into the ocean, Godzilla thought that they're trying to attack his territory, so he counter-attacked to show he is the boss. Much better than MV's savior of planet dude.

Saw this excellent movie in IMAX. Worth every penny. It was an amazing early Christmas gift. Got a free poster also. This is on my top 5 Godzilla list. I was so happy this received an Academy award! This was only supposed to play in cinemas for about 2 weeks, it did so well, it played up until February!

You need to watch the 1954 gojira as it was the first movie godzilla was in and shows him as the true villain and the reason this is called godzilla minus one is because Japan was in its zero after America had nuked it twice

The release pattern for this movie was so strange. It was scheduled for only the first week of December in the US (in IMAX!), but the reviews and the word of mouth was so good Toho scrambled to extend the run as far as the first week of February. Yet there were so many markets that never got a theatrical release, and from what you are saying, it sounds like it never made it to the UK till now. But then again, we in the US don't have it on streaming or physical media at all yet. No matter when/how you see it, it's a pretty damn awesome movie!

Minus One Godzilla is 50.1 meter tall and Monsterverse Godzilla is 120 meters tall. Minus One's design is based on Heisei Godzilla, Monsterverse Godzilla, Shin Godzilla and Millennium Godzilla. The Director of Godzilla Minus One Takashi Yamazaki likes the Monsterverse and took some inspiration from scenes from those movies.

This is not just the best Godzilla movie, it's to me, one of the best movies. It was incredible in the theaters; I've seen it a few times and always makes me tear up a few times. As for the black on her neck, apparently she somehow got some of Godzilla's cells or DNA when the tanks shot Godzilla and the regenerative power allowed her to survive.

2:39 The original method of achieving Godzilla's roar was done by rubbing a rubber glove soaked in in pine tar across the strings of a contrabass. The first form of Godzilla in this movie uses this sound, while the second forms roar was achieved by recoding the same sound being played over loud speakers, creating a bigger, more distorted effect.

Director Yamazaki's deep respect for Spielberg is also evident in the scenes that seem to be homages to "Jurassic Park" and "Jaws." In fact, Spielberg thinks so highly of Yamazaki that he watched "Godzilla Minus One" three times.

During the movie, the news casters who were giving live coverage of Godzilla's attack are a homage to the first Godzilla movie, but the live recordings they risked their lives for were later used as loudspeakers to summon Godzilla, so their deaths were not in vain. The location is also a well-made part of this movie.

there is a theory that the black mark on the back of her neck at the end, was a part of Godzilla. when the black rain fell after Godzilla's atomic breath the radiation from it gave her some of Godzilla's regenerative abilities which explains how she recovered so fast

It’s just perfect. Amazing attention to detail, clever writing, top tier actors, Godzilla was used just the right amount and the design was the best. He’s never looked that menacing. Hollywood should be ashamed. Also, yes we did get it here in the States in theaters and IMAX and then a rerelease for one week in black & white.

The remarkable thing here is that in this film, Godzilla is about 50 meters tall. That’s the same size he was in the original 1954 film. Shin Godzilla on the other hand by stage 4 was about 118 meters tall. The way they shot it is what makes this movie work so well. We see him for high angles next to buildings around him and see him from low angles so he actually appears huge.

This movie truly blew me away when I saw it in theatres. Undoubtedly, it is the Best Godzilla Movie I have ever seen, and it blew my mind knowing the budget of this movie was $15 million; compared to big-budget blockbusters today, that's incredibly small for such an incredibly good-looking movie. Yet, the visuals, writing, acting and cinematography are absolutely masterful. Everyone who worked on this masterpiece 100% deserved the awards it received. I love how the movie tied into the grim and horrific aftermath of WW2, plus the fallout of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Godzilla is an allegory for the consequences of tampering with nature with atomic warfare, and seeing how this film made you care for the characters and story was truly powerful.

If this movie gets a sequel. I hope it’s going to be a remake of the sequel to first Godzilla movie called ‘Godzilla Raids Again’ where Godzilla comes back and fights another Kaiju called ‘Anguirus’ which is a mutated ankylosaurus from Siberia. I hope they give it a redesign and everything and make it fight Godzilla who will come back by regenerating itself as we saw in the post credit scene of this movie, all while destroying a city! This is just my idea for a sequel though, what do you think? Also, let me know what this movie should be called. :)

This is not an American monster verse movie…the original Godzilla was made in the 60’s by Toho production in japan. It was meant to be a true monster created by human arrogance…not a hero fighting other monsters. This movie truly represents the Godzilla ! No American movies to show the entire premise of the movie
