Fun Fact: The old man who keeps Gizmo is played by Keye Luke, one of the first Chinese-Americans to make it huge in the Entertainment Industry. He starred in a lot of films and television roles, he helped found the Screen Actor's Guild and he painted the murals in Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. Pretty impressive resume, if you ask me. Also, Gremlins 2: The New Batch is totally bonkers! Nutty as a fruit cake and really sends itself up. You'll love it.

More Fun Facts: Anna May Wong starred in some 60 roles and was extremely famous in America from the late 1920s into the 1960s. Keye Luke was technically the first Chines male actor to achieve major success in Hollywood starting in the 1930s and ended up with around 230 film credits during his LONG career. If you just want to go "Asian"...the very FIRST Hollywood Heartthrob was Sessue Hayakawa...in the 1910s...and he remained famous across America (even in the south) all through the silent film era with women swooning over him and men wanting to be like him. Yes, white men. Our history has been ignored by those that only want to paint it in racism.

The original Gremlins script was even darker. Initially, the Gremlins would've killed Barney and decapitate Billy's mom. Gizmo was supposed to turn into Stripe, which would've been extremely sad due to how cute Gizmo is and how he forms a bond with Billy. I'm so happy they made these changes as it would've been a completely different movie.

Apparently the bar scene with the gremlins was a nightmare to shoot. It took a long time because of how many different scenes with all the puppets there were, and all the food starting rotting under the hot lights, so everyone was getting sick because of how nasty it was. And yes, you absolutely HAVE to watch the sequel. It actually spoofs itself (Phoebe Cates has another story about why she hates another holiday, it’s nuts) and American 80s capitalism, and is completely INSANE. People were terrified of Mrs. Deagle because she had controlling interest in the local bank and on the local real estate companies. So, since this was the 80's and everybody had a mortgage, she effectively owned all of their homes. In fact, if you listen closely to the tv at the end, she had a plan to essentially sell the town to a chemical company out from under the residents. Her death put an end to that plan.

World War 2 pilots originally spread the concept of gremlins as tiny mischievous creatures that got into machinery as a lighthearted way to explain unknown mechanical problems with their aircraft. Hence the movie focuses a lot on machines and gadgets, and the gremlins cause mayhem primarily by tampering with machines or electronics. Even the name Gizmo alludes to a machine.

The German lore was really fun in this movie: - The neighbor who was in WWII and knew about the gremlins - Snow White and The Seven Drawfs is a German fairy tale (by the Grimm Brothers, I think). - With the animation being done by Walt Disney, who's from German stock - And perhaps the version of Christmas itself being a mix of English and German cultures There's one or two more things, but I forgot. Saw this in the theater when I was a kid. So much fun. Gremlins was huge in the 80s, especially for toys and such. When the Furby came out, all people talked about was that they wish there was a Gizmo version, and they finally collab'd and made them.

The gremlin laughing hysterically with popcorn bags on its ears has always been my spirit animal. Mr. Futterman's cynicism and paranoia was warranted in the crazy-man-was-right-all-along trope. After leaving the bar and headed for home he spoke briefly about the gremlins in the mechanics which was a real thing back in WW2 times, coined by the British RAF. They were little devils which would be blamed for f**king up airplanes which were built to spec but kept breaking down time and time again. Since then we've been blaming mechanical failure of all sorts on Murphy's Law. ~_~ I never could get enough of this movie, watching it every year since gaining sentience at age 10 (1999). The sequel is just as fun and pokes fun at itself with satirical and over-the-top comedy.

Years ago I lost all my hair due to an auto immune condition. So many people complemented my shaved head and continue to do so, so I made a promise to myself to complement a stranger every day that I was out and about in the world. That was at least five years ago and I still continue to do so. Hannah ALWAYS has the kindest things to say about people. Its so endearing, but more so than that its obvious she is just a kind person and likely always has a kind word for people out and about in the real world as well. Coming from someone who felt really really low in life, I can attest to how much those simple kind words can mean to someone. The simple kind words from strangers instilled a habit in me that has hopefully given some people I encounter a little lift in their mood, but it has also changed me as a person. I look for the beauty in people now, even if most people overlook it. Hannah, your beauty is immeasurable. It shines through in every video.

The original script was a lot darker and more violent than the final cut of the movie: Billy's mom gets decapitated by the Gremlins and they throw her head down the stairs after Billy comes home. The Gremlins even kill and eat the family dog. The Gremlins even attack a McDonald's restaurant, but instead of eating the burgers, they kill and eat the customers instead. The original ending even had Gizmo turn into a gremlin to fight off the leader, Stripee, but Steven Spielberg rejected the idea as he wanted Gizmo to be the hero of the story.

The neighbor didn't hate foreigners. He was talking about how things made in other countries (such as his car) weren't made by the same quality standards as things made in North America, which at the time it was clearly obvious something was made outside of the US and Canada by the quality of materials and the fact that they often broke easily. It's got nothing to do with race.
