I haven't seen this for decades. Good reaction. By the way, an object is "hung," but a person is "hanged."

@@IrishGuyReacts Hung vs Hanged are still a mild, polite controversy. In the southerns states of the US, the expression is hung and elsewhere, both are used. Just colloquialisms. But, grammatically speaking, I'd bet that brandonflorida1092 is correct.

For the judge, it was about the greater good of establishing the rule of law, creating order and gaining Statehood for a wild territory. So, yes, he was willing to overlook the injustice done to some individuals along the way.

@IrishGuyReacts If you want to overanalyze, Eastwood's character could represent the compromise of wild Natural Law for imperfect civil law. He doesn't like the judge's way of doing things, but he begrudgingly continues to serve civil justice so that there is SOME form of justice.

Clint Eastwood arrests the Skipper! Hang 'Em High is more or less a "sober" version of High Plains Drifter. The stark difference between the two films made only five years apart marks the dramatic cultural shift occurring at that time. Given the title of the film the hanging lust was bound to infect somebody in it and the judge seeking statehood for the territory no matter the cost makes for a ripe candidate. Public hangings were normal practice dating back to the 16th century that only began to lose favor a hundred years ago. The last public execution in the US took place in 1936. Ben Johnson, who plays Marshal Dave Bliss, was a world-champion rodeo cowboy turned stuntman turned actor with supporting roles in a dozen classic Westerns, including Rio Grande, Fort Defiance, Shane, One-Eyed Jacks, and Cheyenne Autumn.

"You don't remember me, do you?" "No." "When you hang a man, you better look at him." Fun Fact: Early in the movie, there are 2 semi trucks seen in the background using the highway behind the setting. That's Hot Fact: Inger Stevens had never heard of Clint Eastwood before she was cast. Once they met she began to like him very much and they ended up having an affair during filming. When the film was finished, Stevens told director Ted Post: "Anytime you do a picture with Clint and there's a part in it, call me." Bad Step Fact: Clint Eastwood's first leading role in a Hollywood film. He was already 38 years old. Hang 'Em High (1968) is also notable for being Eastwood's first assignment as a producer. Having formed Malpaso (it means "bad step" in Spanish and Eastwood liked the irony) Productions with his friend Leonard Freeman as a loan-out company to help struggling independent filmmakers, Eastwood never dreamed it would develop into a full-scale production house. Historical Fact: The character of Judge Adam Fenton (Pat Hingle) was based in part on Judge Isaac Parker whose federal court in Fort Smith, Arkansas had jurisdiction over the Oklahoma and Indian Territories. The Oklahoma Territory was established from the western part of the Indian Territory in 1890, one year after this story is set. The real-life "hanging judge" was Isaac Parker, who wasn't a big fan of hanging, but the death sentence was mandatory. Judge Parker had a tall wooden fence erected around the gallows to prevent crowds of on-lookers from watching. There is a museum of the court in Fort Smith, and they are building a Federal Marshal's museum nearby.

Produced and co-written by Leonard Freeman, who soon created Hawaii Five-0 and cast James MacArthur in it. MacArthur got mega-rich from that role but was wasted in it.

@@IrishGuyReacts Not that great of a show but the formula worked and it ran for 12 seasons. Then it was revived in 2010 and ran for 10 more seasons. Probably the best theme song in television history.

@@IrishGuyReacts We're also treated to Lee Marvin singing, but he just sits in a buckboard wagon and listens to himself singing "I was born under a wanderin' star" inside his head; a clever device if ever there was one. The songs sang by the underground miners' chorus, "The Best Things In Life Are Dirty" and the above ground business owners "They Call The Wind Maria" are the best.

Hang Em High was never on my list of top Clint westerns. It has the quality (or lack of) and feel of a "made for TV movie". Back in the late 60s and 70s there were a lot of good made for TV movies, but more poor ones. I put Hang em High in the category of those good made for TV movies.

I feel that way after I haven't seen this movie for a while, but then I watch it and recall that Bruce Dern is the villain, so that makes it alright.
