Earl Holliman *was* in _The Twilight Zone_ and _Forbidden Planet_ among many other things until he retired in 2000. He just passed away on November 25. And that was young Dennis Hopper as Dave Hastings.

Sad to hear he passed away. That episode was such fun.

Finally! My favorite western of all time and, IMO, one of John Wayne's best performances. So glad to share it with you. 👍

Glad you enjoyed it. An excellent film by The Duke

Love this movie, wayne at his best! It proves how the more things change the more they stay the same, seen many times when the family glue passes the true family shows! Sometimes over loss and sadly, gred and old wounds open up. Dean was amazing here, i was surprised how the chemistry between him and wayne worked. Thank you as always for the work you put into the video and commentary, happy weekend to all

Yeah, there was great chemistry with Wayne and Dean Martin. Another highly entertaining Western with The Duke

The Sons of Katie Elder got shown on television quite a lot when I was a kid, but not so much anymore. Henry Hathaway directed the film. He directed the earliest true color film, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1936), as well as directing Wayne in The Shepherd of the Hills (1941) and True Grit (1969). He also directed two of my favorite Westerns, Rawhide (1951) and Garden of Evil (1954). John Wayne started out in the movies during the silent era and starred in dozens of Westerns in the 1930s. I've only seen a handful of them -- The Lucky Texan (1934), Blue Steel (1934), The Lawless Frontier (1934), and The Dawn Rider (1935) -- and they're pretty good considering the genre was still developing. Earl Holliman, the actor who played Matt Elder, whom you identified from the first episode of The Twilight Zone, recently passed away at the age of 96. He mostly acted in television but he also played supporting roles in I Died a Thousand Times (1955), Forbidden Planet (1956), Giant (1956), The Rainmaker (1956), and Last Train from Gun Hill (1959). James Gregory, the actor who played Morgan Hastings, appeared in an episode of Star Trek TOS. He mostly acted on television, but he also played General Ursus in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. And the actor who played Dave Hastings, the youngest of the Hastings, was Dennis Hopper, who made his cinematic debut in Rebel Without a Cause before going on to feature in several other classic films including Cool Hand Luke, True Grit, Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, Hoosiers, and Speed. Dennis Hopper also starred in one of the more disturbing episodes of The Twilight Zone where he plays a neo-Nazi.

I don't believe I've seen the episode of The Twilight Zone with Dennis Hopper. I need to get through the rest of the blu ray set. Twilight Zone is honestly one of the best shows I've ever seen

This was John Wayne's return to the screen after surgery for lung cancer in 1964

"Mr. Hastings, you know everybody around here: Can you tell us who is the dirty stinkin' lowdown rat that shot our pa?" Fun Fact: This film has a 100% rating based on 15 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Wanted Poster Fact: The same wanted poster of a man in a top hat smoking a cigar was used in El Dorado (1966), also starring John Wayne, and was a thinly veiled remake of Rio Bravo (1959), which also starred Wayne and Dean Martin. The Duke Fact: Filming was due to begin in October 1964, but had to be delayed until January 1965 after John Wayne was diagnosed with lung cancer. This movie marked the return of John Wayne to work after having a cancerous lung and two ribs removed just four months earlier. He insisted on doing some of his own stunts to show the public that the illness hadn't slowed him down. Wayne contracted a serious cold due to filming the scene where he's dragged into the river and narrowly avoided the cold worsening into full blown pneumonia. You can hear three-year-old Ethan Wayne (aware of his father's condition) cry out: "Come on Dad!"

I've seen quite a few Wayne Westerns now. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is my favourite but I too would find it difficult to rank his other Westerns.

@@raymeedc It's literally the next Western before I get to Western 100. But it will come in January as I want to watch one or two Christmas related films before the Christmas break.

OH, good. There aren’t many westerns that show the west from this particular point of view.
