Heat started off as a pilot for a TV show, Mann actually made a TV movie called LA Takedown in the late 80's that is very similar. Mann ended up taking that story and reworking it and made Heat.

18:53 - Al Pacino ad-libbed this line, so Hank Azaria's reaction is genuine surprise. 21:14 - One of the greatest exchanges in a crime drama, performed by two titans in the industry. 25:29 - I forgot the source, but Val Kilmer's actions during this firefight have been used to exemplify proper procedure during such violent exchanges. This is quite the turnaround for Val Kilmer since his debut film, "Top Secret!" (1984) You should definitely check it out, CI. (If you already did and I somehow forgot, my apologize.)

For the channel, I'd recommend watching Michael Mann's previous film, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS. It's easily one of the best movies Daniel Day-Lewis has starred in and he personally considers it one of his favorites. 1992 theatrical cut is the superior version and most fans preferred cut but is only available on import DVD or UK/EU Netflix, while the DDC version is on Blu-ray and streaming in the United States. Michael Mann in the 90s was next level but anything after 1999's THE INSIDER, which should have won Best Picture, isn't worth reacting to, except maybe COLLATERAL (Mann's 6th or 7th best film). An entertaining enough action thriller, and Tom Cruise playing a hitman is fun, but nothing special. Nothing Mann directed in the last two decades is in the same league as HEAT or MOHICANS, or even MANHUNTER (1986 theatrical cut), hence writing HEAT II (1989-2002)

@@AneudiD78 Larry and Emil had been robbing armored cars, but I think you're right that Heat gave them the idea of how to rob a bank, notably just to walk in and take over (they had already been using AKs on the armored car jobs) and having watches sewn into their sleeves to know when to expect the police. They messed up horribly, though, by continuing with the plan despite the expected armored car not stopping to deposit cash and by walking in with masks on, which was a dead giveaway to the passing police car. Not to mention not having spent any time on the range learning how to shoot accurately. With around 1300 rounds of ammo on them (and head to toe body armor that made them immune to 9mm rounds), a bit of proficiency would have carved them a path to freedom fairly easily had they watched the parts of the movie dealing with ditching one vehicle for another....

What blew my mind was that Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs was one of the cops in Pacino's crew, the first cop to get shot in the bank shooting scene and the one describing the sequence of events after the very first heist scene with the armored truck

Heat is an amazing movie. It´s directed by Michael Mann who also created Miami Vice, an iconic crime TV show in the 80s. So if anyone likes the vibe of this movie, the types of characters etc., Miami Vice is a must see. Miami Vice inspired GTA, so did this movie.

Um, a little correction here - Anthony Yerkovich created the TV series and Michael Mann only produced it. Michael would eventually direct the movie, though.

Interesting take on the film depicting both sides as smart. You're right. I was thinking of Die Hard and how buffoonish the cops are (except for 1) in that movie. But in the end, a personal vendetta killed DeNiro's character. He was out scot-free and couldn't help himself. I guess the movie plot needed that. Michael Mann was the main producer/director of TV Series Miami Vice. You can see his style in those shows, for sure, including the famous "In the Air Tonight" montage video from the show.

This is a public service announcement: Heat 2 A Novel by Michael Mann is out. Not going to say exactly what it is about but if you love this movie like most if the commenters do, check it out. I’m listening to it on audio and I think it’s a good way to take it in because of the Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro voice characterizations. The narrator nails both, especially Pacino’s. I can’t imagine IF and HOW they could turn the novel into a movie though. Heat is pushing thirty years since its making and all of the actors are waaaaaay too old to play their characters and in the case of Val Kilmer, sadly, he is limited by his unfortunate medical challenges. I just hope that IF they attempt to bring the sequel/prequel to the screen, that Michael Mann is the man who does it. Recasts of the characters would be understandable but replacing Michael Mann at the helm would be a non starter for me.

Dennis Hybert has been a actor for over 40 years Movies you may know: Love and Basketball, Waiting to exhale, Planet of the apes, etc. and many more. Until the commercial he's gone unnoticed. But you remember him from the TV show 24, he was the President of the United States.

Heat 2 the book is out. Co-written by Michael Mann. It's both the prequel and sequel to the movie. Picks up hours after the events in the movie end. Pacino's character immediately begins the search for Val Kilmer who was able to slip out of LA. It also gives the backstory of Deniro's crew and Pacino's work as a cop in Chicago and what they were doing in the late 80s.

I'm so glad you finally got the chance to view this epic film for the first time. I consider myself lucky I got to see it on the big screen twice in the winter of '95. Even as a then 19 year old kid, I knew this was such a fantastic experience overall. Easily in my top 3 favorite films of all time. Perhaps second only to TAXI DRIVER (1976). I hope you get to see more Michael Mann films on your channel. 1995 was a great year for films imo, and this one is the cherry in top.

This is the second time Mann made this movie because he loved this story so much. Vincent is based on a real guy who died during a heist in shootout with the cops. Vincent and Val were trained buy military on set to showcase proper leap frogging where one is covering while the other moves then repeat. The Marines use the scene to show what it looks like when done right. It was done so well it inspired many bank and armored car heists in real life it got so bad the government tried to ban this movie.

I’m listening to the audiobook right now. It’s very good if you can get past some cringe, mostly because of the guy who narrates it. I will say tho, the narrator does exceptional Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro voices. It’s worth it just on that score. Very well constructed post and pre Heat story.

Guy told me one time: “don’t let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds FLAT if you feel the heat around the corner.” Simply a great line Btw Neil and Vincent sitting in a coffee shop table did actually happen, Michael Mann had a friend and technical advisor named Chuck adamson who knew and chased a real Neil McCauley and the conversation is almost word to word
