The laws of robotics used in this movie originated in a 1942 short story called "Runaround" by Isaac Asimov. These laws were also used in a Robin Williams movie titled "Bicentennial Man," another great movie with a different tone and take on the concept of humans and robots coexisting with each other. You should definitely give that a try. Also, there is apparently a 4th law of robotics (Law Zero) - which states; "A robot must not harm humanity or allow humanity to come to harm." First three (just for others to see): 1st Law - "A robot must not harm a human or allow a human to come to harm." 2nd Law: "A robot must obey human orders, unless those orders conflict with the First Law." 3rd Law: "A robot must protect itself, unless doing so conflicts with the First or Second Law."

In opposition to Dave, I don't give a flying ... thought about effects when I see a movie with an engaging plot line and great actors. I fall into the story and hang on for wherever the ride takes me. My only problem with this movie is I'm a voracious reader, especially of science fiction (not sci-fi so much -- and they're not the same). "I, Robot" was a collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov who invented the concept of the positronic robot and the three laws. The short stories in this book were some of my first science fiction reads. Asimov did not think humans would build something that would destroy them. The short stories are about robotics going wrong but they do not kill; many are quite humorous. One of his later short stories deals with a rogue robot and the scene where Sonny hides among others in his line is similar to that story. Asimov is probably rolling over in his grave about what they did to his concepts; he would not be happy with what they did in this movie. All they used were his 3 laws, positonic robots, and some character names (Dr. Alfred Lanning: robotic designer and co-founder of US Robotics, Dr. Susan Calvin: robopsychologist, and Lawrence Robertson: co-founder and CEO of US Robotics), But their characters were a bit different in the movie. There is no Spooner in the stories and no character like him.
@gardenia30442 сағат бұрын
Lanning was not the bad guy, his work was misued. Bruce's character was not the bad guy. VIKI sent the NS-5s after Spooner, not Bruce. The uplink (red light on robots) was all VIKI, she was not controlled by anyone. There was no "bad guy", it was an example of humans being self-destructive by creating laws which could be distorted by the robots that were governed by them. There was no character in this movie with malicious intent, so no traditional bad guy.
@Brandon.Reacts41 минут бұрын
The nicest person in the world could be considered a bad guy by someone. Anyone can be a bad guy in someone’s eyes and viki is most definitely meant to be the bad guy. Despite the fact she’s only evolving which is *natural*, she still poses a threat to the humans by wanting to take over, so she is the bad guy.

Growing up watching this movie as a kid, it made me interested in Robots and building things. I read the book, one of my favorite books of all time. It’s several short stories that make you think and I felt they tried combining all the short stories into one narrative for the movie. It didn’t live up to the book due to condensing the original narrative but still good. I love both of them separately but if they ever made a mini-series of I,Robot that follows the book word for word it would be awesome.

There are short stories from the 1940s in a 1950s collection by legendary Sci-Fi author Issac Asimov entited "I, Robot" (not a novel). Several stories of the collection were first adapted for television in the 1960s. This was in the works as an film since the late 1970s. 2 of the stories, Little Lost Robot/Caves of Steel and Asimov's infamous "Three Laws of Robotics" are utilzed in the screenplay. Director Alex Proyas and producer John Davis (the Predatorfranchise) were the most adamant to make the film with the advancements in filmmaking availible to actually make it happen. Paul Mercurio, actor/dancer/choreogapher, trained the mo cap actors and stunt performers in their robotic mobility. This was 1 of 2 films for Will Smith in 2004 (including Shark Tale), his play on paranoia with the robots and playing the hard boiled detective is a good performance. Alan Tudyk as Sonny is a great performance and one of his most iconic roles in the genre. The rest of the supporting cast is good too (Shia LeBeouf not cursing correcly, hilarious). The suspense does border on the Crime Noir flavor. Action, drama and the humor is standard blockbuster stuff. Originally, Smith did record a song for the movie and then he decided to not put it out. Summertime movies with Will are usually released in July (just because) and this one was moved from June because Spider-Man 2 would own pre-4th of July weekend. I, Robot was Oscar-nominated fo Best Visual Effects. Also check out Proyas' other classics, The Crow (1994) & Dark City (1998).

When Sonny was saying he made a promise to Dr. Lanning, it wasn’t to kill Bruce’s character, it was to kill Dr. Lanning himself (e.g. throw out the window).in Sonny’s eyes, he didn’t “kill” him, he just fulfilled the promise. I don’t think Sonny killed Bruce, I think that was VIKI. Also, Sonny’s wink was because Spooner told him it was a sign of trust when he first asked.
