Christoph actually speaks fluent English, French and German but only a little Italian, Inglorious Basterds almost never got made because they could not fill the role of Landa, then along came Christoph. That is why the opening scene is so powerful, the just perfect swap from French to English, then Back from English to French.

In France and Germany, it's not so rare anymore to have people fluent in these languages. People with immigration background even speak a fourth language.
@maarius030 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I’m from Germany and anyone learns English in school for atleast 8 years. Most Germans can speak English and many many fluently. But in Germany we don’t only learn one foreign language but at least two (there’s the option to learn even more). It’s not mandatory to take French as your 2nd foreign language but most do (there’s also the option to choose Latin, Spain or other languages depending on your school. Then you learn this 2nd foreign language for at least 4 years as well. If you’re from an immigrant family it’s very likely (almost guaranteed) that you speak 3 language (German, English and the language of his/her parents) and you know at least a little French. A girl from my former school class has Vietnamese parents and speaks German, English, French and Vietnamese fluently (like really fluently) and knew enough Korean to communicate properly. I feel like people from the US or UK don’t really understand how normal it is for other to speak at least 2 languages fluently. (I looked up for statistics about Germany and about 65% Germans speak English and about 25% speak English perfectly fluent. I didn’t find good statistics about the french language but about 20% Germans speak french)

Other little details of that opening scene. When Landa grabs the daughter's wrist and asks her for the milk, some believe he was checking her pulse in that moment (if true, makes it even scarier how sharp he is for clues). The other detail the father splashing himself before Landa meets him, was to hide any sweat he might have during his conversation, this way he appears already sweaty from working on the farm, when he likely would have sweat from the nerves. Anyway, great reaction!
@ashkaash98192 жыл бұрын

The father is seen working before the Nazis pull up to his farm, when he notices the cars he stops and washes himself off as to be presentable to the Nazis
@rawbones4117 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's that deep Landa grabbing the daughter by the wrist is a subtle show of power. It's a subtle act of disrespect but there's nothing the Father can do. The Germans are literally dominating the French this entire movie (and moment in actual history). They simply have to take it. It also helps with Landa's plan. The Father cracks because of the implication of danger towards his family. He knows if he defies then his whole family can be killed, or worse. The water bit is him washing himself. He had been working in the heat all day. He is unkempt and most likely stinks of hard labor. He is meeting with a distinguished, hostile Authority figure who he doesn't want to upset. Thus, he attempts to groom himself slightly. I'm sure you could also read into a symbolic meaning. He's washing himself before shaking hands with Evil perhaps? But the idea that he's washing himself to appear sweaty when he was already sweaty is... odd.
@SSD_Penumbra Жыл бұрын
The even more obscure detail is in his meeting with Shoshanna. He orders cream for the strudel. Cream isn't Kosher in the jewish faith. He's testing her to see if she'll eat it, and when she doesn't, his suspicions are proven correct. If Aldo and Hammarsmark weren't present at the theatre, she would've been killed then and there.
@peterk55862 жыл бұрын
Landa is probably the most terrifying person. Toys with his prey, acts foolishly yet totally planned. Everything about him sends chills down my spine for Shoshana..

Tarantino was in Django. He was the LeQuint Dickey Mining Co. Employee #1. He was speaking with an Australian accent and YES...he was in this film with two cameos. A little something about war, the unfortunate reality is that sometimes excessive brutality actually saves lives. Scaring the enemy into thinking they are up against men who don't care about the well-being of the enemy is sadistic on the surface, but can dissuade the enemy from fighting, and removes them as a threat. Killing an entire platoon of soldiers may prevent their whole battalion from fighting. As awful as it sounds, it's actually quite effective, as we've seen in Afghanistan.

fun fact about the first scene with hanz landa, when he grabs the girls wrists, hes actually checking their pulses. and when his eyes linger on the girls, it is actually a super subtle threat to the father like "you know exactly what im capable of, play by my rules and youll be ok." his character is one, if not the most, powerful characters made in this movie imo.

Fun fact, the first nazi being scalped is Quentin Tarantino. And in the restaurant scene Landa orders cream for both of them. Since cream contains pork gelatin, he still orders it for her so she can eat it knowing she's Jewish

I love all of QT’s films, but kill bill 1&2 are his absolute magnum opus. The collective masterpiece among his masterpieces. Epic doesn’t even begin to do the “one in two films” justice. It’s brilliance. Pure brilliance.

Makes me happy for you. Been subscribed to the channel for a long time now, way back from the Mortal Kombat trailer reaction. You deserve your success. Your enthusiasm is fantastic and I appreciate how you say what comes to your mind at the moment and it's usually unfiltered. That's very refreshing with how everybody, everywhere in the world appears like they are walking on egg shells all the time about what they can say. Your commentary is very refreshing to someone who grew up in the 80s when people didn't get "participation" trophies for just showing up, and that was ok because we learned that dealing with failure and disappointment builds character. You constantly make me laugh and I've spit out whiskey several times because of some of the shit you say! Just fantastic! It's very sweet and wonderful that you share your success with your family and closest friends. That was awesome for Hannah! Love you guys! ❤️

@@justtrustash I appreciate your work because I know it has to be difficult. What you do is important because I'm willing to bet many would rather watch this type of entertainment then stuff on television with 15 commercials per hour. I'm not sure if you've heard yet, but a sequel to Mortal Kombat (the newest film) has already been greenlit and is starting production (ot pre-production.... I'm not sure what the process is to make a movie).

Fun fact: Eli Roth and Omar Doom got a little singed while filming the theater fire climax. Actually they almost got incinerated. The fire got way hotter and closer than intended and a waft of hot air smacked them hard. It should have burned at around 400 degrees C, but instead was closer to 1,200. The swastika wasn’t supposed to fall either but the steel support wires melted. You can especially see Eli flinch as they’re reloading their maschinenpistole 40’s after killing Hitler’s party, and directing their fire on the audience.

16:35 Nope. Hitler loved women from Munich. Eva was his crazy companion, but he had a soft spot for the ladies of Munich. That's where his secretary was from. You guys should watch DOWNFALL. It's a great film about the end of Nazi Germany. Really, really well done. Bruno Ganz is the single best Hitler performance I have ever seen.

He held up three fingers and not 2 fingers and his thumb. I saw a "CIA Spy Reacts" video and they explained that Europeans count starting with their thumbs. Cultural thing gave away his cover.

Pulp fiction next…PLEASE!!! This is my favorite all-time movie, it really is his masterpiece and Tarintino himself felt that way about it at the time. And I agree at the end, the dentist had to die in Django for the happy ending and in this Shoshanna had to die for the happy ending, hints Revenge of the Giant Face. Once she died her spirit still lived through the smoke as her theater burned to the ground and she got what she wanted (as did we). Masterful film. Pulp Fiction is a must watch! Masterful in its own way, different to this and Django as it’s not a timepiece but still an incredible film. You’ll be in for a ride! ALSO: Tarintino was in this as the first dummy we see getting scalped at the beginning. He didn’t make an actual appearance in this movie.

In that famous graphic novel Maus about the holocaust, the Jews are depicted as mice and the Nazis are cats. I think Tarantino riffed on this idea by having Landa and the other high level Nazis behave like cats, toying with their prey, playing with them like mice.

The editing was PERFECT. Talking about Brad Pitts character being "on a power trip this guy here is" and the sentence finished on Hitler slamming his hand on the table having a tantrum. Nobody outside Satan himself has been on a bigger power trip than people like Hitler, Stalin, and Mao were.

This movie is super important to me as I first watched it with my paternal grandfather who fought in WW2 and was friends with many British soldiers, there were specific moments and events that he would say ‘that’s accurate’ or ‘yep that’s how me and my unit worked’ and it was fascinating to hear his perspective on the events of that time

29:30 Hope you recognized Mike Myers 37:18 Ah, the continental divide. As usual, another fantastic reaction! And, yes, this has got to be one of Tarantino's best ones. The opening sequence with Hans Landa and the French farmer alone is a master class in visual storytelling. :-D
