My first time watching jaws. This is actually my first movie reaction at all. I hope you enjoy my Jaws reaction. I've wanted to do movie reactions for a long time and I'm excited to finally show you my first time watching movie reactions.

Quint smashed the radio because he didn't want outside help to kill the shark. Killing the shark was his obsession. Especially given his experience being part of the crew of the USS Indianapolis. I figure it's a serious case of post traumatic stress disorder that scarred him for life.

As a kid, I had to watch this with my feet lifted up from the floor, because the carpet was obviously the surface of the sea.

The first attack is how a shark feeds when they are shaking their victim back and forth the break off a piece of meat. I studied Marine Biology. The top jaw extends forward and comes down to trap the victim and when they shake their prey back and forth the teeth which in a Great White are serrated on both sides...slice back and forth thru the flesh like carving knives. To get this effect they actually tied a harness and ropes and pulleys to the actress and literally yanked her back and forth in the water. The screams you hear are real cause they actually hurt her. If the attack had been real....when she was hanging onto the bouy she would have most likely been missing one or both legs

Exactly. It also irks me when people who have never done research on sharks are like "oh that looks so fake!" Fake-looking or not, you wouldn't want to be in Chrissy's situation.

Alex Kintner was the boy who was attacked out on his raft -- Several decades after the filming of Jaws (1975), Lee Fierro, who plays Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.

You’re too young to know/remember, but beer cans in those days were quite stiff and harder to crunch than today’s thin aluminum. That’s why the joke about the other guy crushing the styrofoam cup is funny.

The video game at around 12 min is "Killer Shark" by Sega, 1972. It's an electromechanical game that uses film projection.. so there are no "graphics" as such. Theres also no microchips in It either.. it's a "hardwired" game. The first arcade video games came out in the late 60s.

I worked at an arcade as a teen. After hours we’d open all the coin bins and play the games for free. I loved Shark Attack! You were the shark and the little scuba divers would yell when you ate them. 🦈 Now I’m a scuba diver and avid supporter of shark conservation. I’ve been diving around sharks a lot. I’ve even gone to a spot in Costa Rica where you can drop 90 feet to the bottom and just sit there as 10-12 foot bull sharks swim around you. So cool!

Fun fact: Steven Spiellberg made a comedy called 1941. The first scene is a parody of the opening of Jaws starring the same lady. Don't want to give too much away but it's worth a look.

The mayor is STILL mayor & considering the timeframe this means he got re-elected.🤯 Local politics are important people, Sometimes there's a body count.😋 Choice films: Take the Mel Brooks film suggestions you have gotten seriously- He's a national treasure & genius. Heathers- greatest High School movie ever IMO..IF you like a heaping helping of dark humor. 'Momento' - Ever hit the tattoo parlor when you REALLY want to remember something? This guy can relate.(Not a comedy) 'Johnny Dangerously'- Gangster spoof. UHF - Imagine if Weird Al Yankovic ran a TV station. Top Secret! (Seen Airplane!?.. Same trio wrote this) Val Kilmer in his first role, It's like an Elvis beach movie mashed up with an WWII espionage film and LOTS of absurdity on top. Like Robert Redford: 'Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.' & 'The Sting'. 'Murder by Death - Murder Mystery & silly Mayhem No idea if you've seen all the Mad Max, or Indiana Jones, or Clerks. "Important" folks in the old days would literally have two lines and two phones (one for personal use and one for work purposes). You probably heard the phrase "That's some bad hat Harry" if you watched television shows (like HOUSE) made by "Bad Hat Harry Productions" created by Bryan Singer, which would say the JAWS line at the end of the credits. A few films also include the X-Men series, The Usual Suspect, and Superman Returns.

Fun fact Finger pruning is evolution at it's finest.. It actually helps us get a better grip of things while in water.. also not everybody prunes..Because not everybody has that gene.. The gene is actually fairly new so it's still in development..Has a lot to do with our fishing ancestry

When Jaws came out in 1975 it was the first giant shark movie and came as a surprise to a lot of movie goers who were used to seeing sharks in movies and t.v.series being these dolphin sized fish.Then finding out that the shark in the movie wasn't that much bigger than the biggest recorded great white startled many people.

That makes sense! Today we are used to things being exaggerated for effect and even assuming Jaws is close to accurate for a large shark it would be pretty shocking for the first time. Great info Ed, thanks!

Great reaction. This movie made me uncomfortable even in pools at night if I couldn’t see under the water. My favorite fun fact about this film is that the Spielberg asked John Williams to show him the “theme” for jaws he sat through and listened the. Laughed and said, no really, what do you have” or something like that. But when Steven Spielberg heard that theme paired with film footage, it terrified him.

That is SO believable. Just hearing it, it's not the most sweeping or terrifying piece of music, but it really works in context. That is Spielberg's true gift, creating music that perfectly fits the movie.

My understanding is that the reason, or a big part of the reason, we don't actually SEE the shark for so long is because they were having a lot of trouble with the mechanical shark, and it would not work properly. I'd say the creative solutions they came up with to indicate the shark's presence, without actually showing the shark, made the movie a whole lot better by heightening the suspense. "Can you not hear the music?" LOL 8:41 -- he's not simply letting her vent. At bottom, he feels she's not wrong. Yes, the mayor is an idiot, but ultimately this was his decision to make.

Great reaction! I'm subscribing! Spielberg followed this blockbuster up with another, even greater one: the dazzling, one-of-a-kind masterpiece "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind", about UFO sightings and alien contact. Came out the same year as "Star Wars". I saw "Star Wars" the day it opened and loved it, but nothing approaches the movie theater experience I had with "Close Encounters" six months later. They were "twin" movies in 1977, it was not just "Star Wars" that changed the tide, it was "Star Wars" and then "Close Encounters" six months later that did it. HIGHLY recommending that one, if you haven't seen it.

@@CasualNerdReactions That does mean that you are a good guy :D The shark lives in the ocean so it's his home. If people are affraid of sharks, they can stay away from the ocean. A ocean without sharks is one of my biggest fears, they are just amazing.

Actually, you weren’t the first person who wanted the shark to win. Jaws was originally a novel and every person in the novel were terrible people (no exaggeration) Steven Spielberg said with the original novel, he wanted the shark to win

SPOILER ALERTS FOR THE NOVEL@@g.b569 ... I didn't think Chief Brody was terrible... but yes, everyone else. I read the novel only a couple of months before the movie was released, and I was amazed (and delighted) at the way the character of Matt Hooper was re-shaped into a sympathetic and humorous guy. He's an arrogant pretty-boy prick in the novel who has an affair with the Chief's wife (and he doesn't survive the attack on the underwater cage... which otherwise plays similarly to the movie). The other brilliant stroke of the movie is keeping the second half all on water. In the novel they keep going back to land at the end of the day (I think it took them three days to kill the shark... and Brody is the only survivor)

Great reactions! I remembered well going to see this movie under protest with my boyfriend when it was first released. There was a long line of people waiting to get in the theater. The looks on the people leaving the theater should have been some indication of what we were getting into. My boyfriend at the time was a big husky football player, and throughout the movie he was cutting off the circulation in my arm when he reacted to the gory scenes. If ever there was a movie that kept people out of the water, "Jaws" was it. I certainly didn't go near the water for the entire summer. Yes, I give a hat tip to Peter Benchley for writing the novel and Steven Spielberg for directing the movie version which became the first summer blockbuster.

Sharks will often "bump" intended victims a few times before the initial test bite to determine if they are a threat or prey so yes, that is quite a bit like what an attack would look like in the beginning of the movie. The two landlines was common in the 70s because call waiting didn't exist. In this case one line for the house, one for police business for the chief. The money priority was serious for a small summer beach town. You made your money for the entire year in those 3 months, and had to live off it the rest of the year. Also, in the novel, you learn the mayor had paid a debt to the NY mafia for his wife's medical care by giving them properties on the island that would be rented by tourists. No tourist rentals, no money to pay off the mob.

As for why Quint destroyed the radio...you didn't show his monologue about being on the USS Indianapolis (I imagine it might have gotten the vid blocked if you did). After watching 500-700 men die to sharks (albeit mostly Oceanic whitetips) after that sinking, he spent the rest of his life as a shark fisherman, getting revenge of a sort. He is Captain Ahab and this shark is the white whale. He needs to kill it himself after it's spent most of the movie making a fool of him.

That scene was SO powerful! I couldn’t find a way to cut it down and I was trying to keep the reaction under half an hour. Really makes a lot of sense with that perspective. I was kinda of impressed when he brought out life jackets for the other two.

Lots of "fun facts" in the comments so here's another: The first attack, the girl swimming at night, her scream was real because the mechanism shaking her broke her leg. The film crew continued filming as they thought she was acting.

The music cues for the shark aren't dependable - smart film-making. Just when we feel relaxed bc there's no shark music, it attacks. Then sometimes the music seems to warn us the shark is coming but nothing happens. We can't count on the music to keep us safe from the shark. Genious!

Enjoyed your reaction very much. It's always fun to vicariously experience "Jaws" for the 'first' time (again) through the eyes of a new viewer 👏. The slow reveal of the shark was due to "Bruce" the mechanical shark not always working, which IMO added to the suspense because it required your imagination to create the tension and fear. Spielberg named the shark Bruce after his Lawyer at the time, lol. I agree, I don't know what rating this would get today based alone on Quint's death scene? There was no PG-13 at the time, but the film's print and TV advertising had a "This Film May Be Too Intense For Young Children" disclaimer. That disclaimer did not deter my 9 year old self from pestering my parents to see this in 1975, lol. It was THE Summer movie-going Event of that year! Subscribing to enjoy more reactions. 👍 Search out Spielberg's pre- "Jaws" man against a seemingly insurmountable force film, "Duel"- it was made for TV, but Spielberg was already showing his genius! I agree, it was more impactful having the shark mostly in our minds until later in the movie, but then really giving us what we wanted in spades! I was 13 when Jaws came out, it changed the whole experience of going to the beach for years. It does not age, great reaction!

Despite the cultural impact of this movie, you are in fact statistically safer from death around a shark than you are around your average barnyard animal, if you can believe it. Indeed, the odds of a shark attack on a human are about on par with rolling the same die face 12 times in a row, which makes far more likely outcomes include getting hit by lighting, or winning the jackpot. And yet, there's something so compelling about a story that trains us to fear an apex predator, even if we're not said predator's natural prey, nor likely to be in serious danger even if you were around them. That said, the Great White in particular is a species you wouldn't want to get too close to, because even though they don't hunt humans intentionally, they do have a nasty habit of mistaking humans for turtles or seals, which they do hunt. Tiger Sharks and Bull Sharks are similarly risky to be around for the same reason. However, there are hundreds of species of shark out there, and the fact that only 3 are consistently the kinds you need to watch yourself around is pretty telling.

That is in fact very much what it would look like if it were a shark attacking that girl. Sharks are actually quite cautious about what they bite. They often have a quick test bite. It inflicts injuries, and also gives them a good idea if whatever they're interested in is food or not. As we now know there are a couple modes that Great Whites will adopt when hunting. The bulldoze it at top speed from below method, they usually use for seals. And the test bite, keep going, then circle back and hit it for real method. Of which this is clearly the latter.

Yeah. That nails on the chalkboard scene was excruciating at movie theater volume. My teeth and every other part of my body clenched. This was listed as PG when I was a kid and it came out.

I can't imagine watching that scene in theaters. I still shudder thinking about it haha. It's still listed as PG because it came out before PG-13, although by today's standards I wonder if they could even show the death scene with all the blood without it being R.

At the time,they got around the ratings by adding an extra little warning on the posters and ads.."may be too intense for younger children..",but in the beginning of the ratings,PG wasn't meant to be the family-friendly rating it is now.

Okay, I paused this one near the beginning to write this comment. You just mentioned that you are from Pensacola and I almost fell out of my chair! Storytime with Alan (I can be long-winded). My dad was stationed in Pensacola and we lived on base. One day, my mom got a job running the ticket booth at the base theater. I was four years old. I was at the beach every weekend. I went up to the balcony. I now have a fear of sharks that is so intense, I nearly have a fit when I see one in a videogame! Now I will finish your reaction to this classic that is paradixically one of my favorite movies. I don't understand it either.

Peter Benchley wrote the book this was based on. He said that it took him 15 years to realize he was a bad writer. But by then he was so successful he had to keep writing. :-)

I first saw this in the theater at first release in the 70s, it was a high school date movie. That first attack scared me to death, damn what great effects. My girl and I went to ocean city md. beach that summer but never went into the ocean, lol Definitely a timeless classic. Loved it.

Read the book in middle school (probably way too young, but it's a great read), but I don't remember when I first saw the movie. Great adaptation of an excellent book.

Fun fact: the shark at the end, the one that killed quint. The chalkboard guy. The shark didn’t operate properly until the ending of the film so that’s why that shark didn’t appear in most clips. The shark wasn’t operating, there was some mechanical issues because it was a robot that was sculpted and it was being fixed at a repair shop for the film. The shark is now restored in place after 75 years, i think it was refurbished in 2020.

The shark that was restored wasn't used in the movie. It's a fiberglass copy cast from the original shark that was used to promote the movie. The mouth was never able to open or close.

Apparently, Hooper surviving was a last-minute change, to take advantage of the stock footage captured for the underwater attack. There was a moment where the shark got his fins stuck between the bars of the cage, and proceeded to thrash it apart to break free. Since luckily no one was in the cage for that incident, but since the footage looked effectively dramatic, it was decided that Hooper would escape just as the shark started breaking the cage apart, so that the shot could end up in the final cut.

Chris, that "fear and anticipation" you described when we hadn't yet seen the shark...was ENTIRELY UNINTENTIONAL! The mechanical shark kept malfunctioning the whole time Spielberg was shooting the first half of the film. Because they were way over time and budget, he decided to film the first half with absolutely no visible shark. Many people think that decision turned out to be one of the the best choices Spielberg ever made. Fear of the unknown (and unseen!) caused the first half of the movie to be far scarier than the second.

The mayer WAS acting in the town's best interest. It is a beach front town. It is utterly dependant on summer to make its money. Why destroy everyone's buisnesses-and the town with it just be ause of the local wild life? Do we shut the roads down indefinitely every time someone commits a hit and run?

Look, I think it may very well be the right economic decision for the town and it's clear that the majority of the town itself was on the Mayor's side. Political pressure probably demanded he push to keep it open, but it's so much more fun to hate the Mayor and after the little boy died it's time to shut it down and go hunting, not encourage people to get in the water.

Finally someone commented this. That's exactly case. It's better explained in the book but the town needs the summer money to survive. Without it the town might not survive and if they do, it would be exceptionally difficult times. No one really brings that up in any of the reaction videos or their comment sections I've seen.

Yes, I was SO impressed with that scene from the writing to the performance that I was completely enthralled. This was also my first time editing a full length movie into a reaction and I had no idea how to try and edit that scene without putting the whole thing. If I could go back I would 100% Include it.

Here, we have all the classic conflicts occurring all at once. We have man versus nature (humans versus the shark). Man versus Man (Quint and Hooper, Chief Brody versus The Mayor), Man versus Himself (Chief Brody is afraid of the water but must go out to sea, new resident Chief Brody wants to be accepted by Amity Island but finally decides to close the beaches and publicly announce a shark attack, Quint vs his unreasoning hatred of sharks ( a conflict Quint loses)).

I wasn't going to do this since this was posted almost a year ago and there's already 354 comments but I figured why not no one knows all the trivia of everything, right? lol In the book there's a reason the mayor needs a good summer, he's in pretty deep with the mafia. Another thing in the book that didn't make the movie is that Hooper and Brodie's Wife have a little fling and Brody is suspicious thru most of the book. I saw a skit on one of those shows, I think it was Mad TV, when Mrs. Kittner slaps Brodie, he slams her into a boat and slaps the cuffs on her for assaulting a police officer LOL The movie is set in a fictional New England Island town based on Rhode Island's Block Island but more so like Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard. One thing I can honestly say is that the summers of 75 and 76, the water at the RI beaches was almost completely empty. My parents went to see this when it hit the theaters. Given the fact that I was 9 at the time they dropped me off at my grand parents house. When they picked me up my dad still had the bruised craters from my moms fingernails in his arm LOL. Peace

This was the first ever "blockbuster" movie, with people queuing for hours - stretched around the block - to watch it. Perhaps not this movie specifically, but this time frame (late 70's) is also considered the beginning of the "modern film industry". There's certainly a fairly clear divide when you compare earlier movies with ones after this time frame. The industry was really learning their craft. I know I saw Jaws in grade school... probably shouldn't have lol (same with Freddy!) I already had issues with the ocean (read too much about Titanic), so - yeah - I mostly stay on land these days...

PS: Ok, so I see "Close Encounters" is on your list; here's another one: Richard Dreyfus and Harrison Ford in their first movie, George Lucas' first hit movie, the success of which brought you Star Wars, the masterpiece teen comedy AMERICAN GRAFFITI. A fantastic, fantastic movie. Better than Star Wars, in my opinion! The few reactors who have done it LOVE it, and you would do a great job with it.

Don't let the fact that it's a musical deter you, nor the year. The music is fantastic, and so is the story, and so is the acting, and so is the dancing. I think you would really like, if not love, it. And if you do enjoy it, it would be neat to react to the 2021 version to compare the two.

Another great movie. Actually most people when attacked by a shark report their first response to the bite is that the shark grabs them and pulls them under to soo what they are...usually causing them to bleed juat a little triggering a worse attack...so yeah, quite accurate actually. Back then if you wanted more than one line, for instance a police chief that always wants to be able to be contacted...you would have to have more than one phone depending on your types of phone line. Since he is the Chief of Police on a beach town island...that type of vehicle is quite common for his Police vehicle. Crabs feed on dead things as they are scavengers. The Bad Hat line is from this movie. Yes Chris...you run into the water and grab your kids...you obviously don't have any...or if you do, I feel sorry for your kids...LOL. You talked over the Mayor or you would have realized he was right about not cutting the shark open right then. He doesn't say not to cut it open, just not to cut it open right there and have the little boys body spill out on the dock in front of everyone. He's still a jerk though. When Cooper dives down by the boat, he doesn't realize yet how dangerous this shark is yet. Right now it's just a random shark attack as far as he knows. He doesn't know how abnormally dangerous this shark is yet. I used to play that video game. LOL...you're mad at the guys knocking the kids over while trying to save his own like but earlier you didn't think people should rescue their kids from shark in the water. Ok Chris...you don't think sharks pull you down into the water...what do you think they do? Strangle you on the surface? They bite you and are always swimming, so they take you with them until they let go or what they are biting is severed. Who cares about getting the right picture? Have you never looked at Instagram or TikTok? LOL. Yes because only scientists know what being swallowed by a shark means. This is the movie that started the summer blockbuster craze that we still have today. I saw this movie in the theater when I was young and it was terrifying as there hadn't been anything like it before.

Actually, most sharks begin their attacks by bumping their target with their nose...not sure why. Once they bite, they tend to thrash from side to side. However, these kinds of attacks are rare in the U.S and generally occur in shallow water (like 2 - 3 feet). But those 2 notes!!! The 2 single notes of that music sends chills down my spine to this day. AND, this movie is the reason I am terrified of wide swaths of seaweed on a beach. I WILL NOT walk through it. Ever. Full stop. LOL Another great reaction!
