Remarkably, Quint’s speech about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is a historical fact. It really happened! His vivid description of the tragedy that resulted is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks, just as you surmised. He smashed the radio not only because he wanted to secure the bounty and reward for killing the Great White, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge - or perhaps personal redemption - for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by killing the man-eating shark himself.

@waylonmercy1533 I agree. Quint didn't do anything about the shark until he got paid what he demanded. He then became obsessed with it because it would have been his ultimate trophy. Imagine those massive jaws hanging up in his shack, ahead of all the other jaws. Quint did become a shark hunter because of the Indianapolis but he wasn't on some vendetta otherwise he would have gone after the shark from when Alex Kintner was killed. He didn't.
@Hexon66
@Hexon66 9 ай бұрын
Well, let's say the speech was based on an historical event and exaggerated for emotional impact. Understandable for a film trying to create a "monster" to utilize a horrific backstory. But both this film and the Indianapolis story are more about burnishing the man-eating shark mythos, and less about facts. But then again, hundreds of sailors dying from exposure doesn't quite tug at the same heartstrings.

I think this iconic film gives a nod to the classic 1956 movie “Moby Dick” starring Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab. Both Quint and Ahab had an obsession with killing their nemesis; a great white shark in Jaws and a huge white whale in Moby Dick. Both characters lost their lives to the beast they so obsessively tried to kill.

Spielberg was offered to direct Jaws 2 but he aid that he'd only direct another Jaws movie if it was a prequel movie about the USS-Indianapolis. It wasn't just shark attacks that killed all the people after the ship went down, they were also killed from drowning, exposure and injuries from the ships torpedoes. But there were plenty of shark attacks.....and it's true, no one sent out a distress signal. Took people a week to realise they were gone. I'm hoping Spielberg does do a movie about the USS Indianapolis.

It brought strangers together and created a vibe. It was perfect. We also have been to several “Jaws on the water” events, where everyone floats on an inter tube in a lake and and watches the movie on a big screen. The actor who played quint had a drinking problem and his co stars said that he was drunk in all his scenes. The shark was supposed to be shown more but it kept breaking down so they had to use shark footage. The woman who played Alex’s mother said that years later she went into a restaurant and noticed there was a lot of Jaws memorabilia on the walls so she mentioned to the waitress that she was in the movie in who she played and the waitress said that the owner would want to meet her and he turned out to be the guy who played Alex. The downside of the movie is that it created an hysteria about sharks and people started going out and killing them for no reason and the worlds shark population took a big hit, Spielberg has even said he regrets that the movie created that. This was the 70’s our parents didn’t watch us like hawks all the time and we were much more independent then kids these days, I remember being 5-6 years old and walking away I friends houses by myself and to school and etc. we would go to hockey arenas for my older brothers games and I would be running around with kids my age and looking back it is surprising more of us we’re not kidnapped, when I look at 5-6 year olds now they seem like babies and helpless. If you spit on your goggles it prevents them from fogging up under water.

Well now, that's over exaggerated to be honest. Robert Shaw was not drunk in all his scenes at all and he only got wasted on one occasion. He made up for it the next day. His personal transportation man on Martha's Vineyard said Robert Shaw was never late, even with a 4.30 am start. He said he was always there, ready for his lift to the filming location. Total professional. Robert Shaw never held up production, except for that ONE day filming the USA Indianapolis monologue. Also, the Asian shark finning industry, commercial gill net and long line by-catch and the beach netting programmes have been way more responsible for declining shark populations than Jaws. Great white sharks were declining pre Jaws and the grey nurse shark was almost wiped out off Australia by spear fishermen in the 1950s and 1960s because they looked mean but were docile and easy to kill. Just saying. Cheers.

Robert Shaw was not drunk and all of his scenes. He asked permission to specifically be drunk for the filming of the Indianapolis scene and he didn't do a great job and asked Steven Spielberg if he can make it up to him tomorrow and do it over again. And Carl gottlieb who was a screenwriter and the man who played the gentleman Meadows with the newspaper, stated that Verna fields did such a great job editing, that even though she used different clips from his drunk filming of the Indianapolis scene and his sober filming of the Indianapolis scene, you can't tell which is which. The only reason he knows which is which is by looking at the eyes. You can tell when his eyes are glossy that that's when he was drunk. And my citation for that is the 2005 jawsfest interview with Carl gottlieb and Peter benchley

He was told he'd cause a panic for no reason on the 4th of July if he even said it could be a shark. It was his first year, not quite sure what he was doing (or at leat the mayor and others implied that). That was the reason no warnings were put out, they ordered him not to. Not because of his lack of compassion for that first death. At least that's how I've read it for decades.

Great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are one of the most feared predators in the ocean due to their size and reputation. However, there has been much scientific research conducted to try to understand their feeding habits. So, how often does a great white shark eat? To answer this question, it is important to understand the factors that influence their feeding habits, such as their size, species of prey, and habitat. Studies have shown that great white sharks typically feed every few days, but the amount and frequency of their meals can vary. For example, larger sharks tend to feed less frequently than smaller sharks and prefer different types of prey. Additionally, their habitat may also have an effect on their feeding habits. By understanding the various factors that influence a great white shark’s diet, we can gain insight into how often they eat. Great white sharks are known to prey on humans, as well as other animals. Great white rhinoceroses are frequently regarded as eating enormous quantities of food every day due to their large body size and weight. It’s a question that should be asked in depth because it involves the amount of food they consume. A great white shark can weigh up to 1500 to 2500 pounds, according to estimates, and its maximum weight can reach 5000 pounds. According to observations, sharks typically consume between 0.5 and 3% of their body weight in the course of hunting. They must wait a few days between meals in order for their bodies to digest the food. The great white shark is the world’s most lethal shark, with no rival in terms of hunting capabilities. Their powerful jaws allow them to decimate any sea creature they come into contact with. Humans, on the other hand, are not their favorite food source. White pointers prefer marine mammals with a high protein content. As apex predators, sharks play an important role in the ecosystem by maintaining the species below them in the food chain and serving as an indicator for ocean health. They help remove the weak and the sick as well as keeping the balance with competitors helping to ensure species diversity. Without sharks as apex predators, the entire ocean ecosystem could fall out of balance. They not only maintain the species below them in the food chain, but also indirectly maintain seagrass and coral reef habitats.

Absolutely love this movie. I not only grew up in this area but I’m acquaintances with one of the actors. I’ve have multiple great chats with him about the movie, especially Spielberg’s attitude, because the actor is friends with Spielberg (in fact, he has only an uncredited bit part - the radio announcer… he only got the part BECAUSE he’s friends with Spielberg… and, yes, he’s a close enough acquaintance and there’s enough info online about him that I could verify what he told me… not some tall tales of an actor-wannabe). So, this movie is close to my heart… I grew up where this movie was set and shot. I have more backstory info than most, due to my good acquaintance. And because I come from that area, I also know it was cast well, as I can relate to some of those people. My Uncle Dave is Quint incarnate. It’s also so realistic. Obviously, having a human-hunting shark is fairly unrealistic, but there are actual valid reports of it occurring at least once. In New Jersey in the early 1900s there were several shark attacks that MOST attribute to the same shark. It’s believable that you could find some rogue shark out there with a taste for humans. Animals have differing personalities just like people do. If you’re a pet lover… do all your dogs or cats all have the same personality? Of course not. So, even though scientists mock the notion of sharks hunting people, that’s just the general norm. The idea that one shark in a million could have a thing for going after people is actually very reasonable. That New Jersey incident likely proves it. In fact, the NJ story is even scarier than the movie, as the shark went upstream and attacked children in a freshwater river. So, Jaws isn’t even a worst case. The real life NJ story is worse. Sorry, too long comment, but I typed all that because the one big knock on this movie is that it’s unrealistic. Sharks don’t do that. Wrong. It’s one in a million. Almost every shark doesn’t do that. That’s correct. ALMOST every shark. The only thing unrealistic about the movie is the size of the shark. Even THAT may not be completely impossible. But when you combine those odds with the rarity of true man eaters, as I was just discussing, it becomes pretty much impossible. Either of those rarities (size and man-eater) by themselves… one in a million, but it could happen. Both combined is unlikely. Still… it’s far less unrealistic than some pedantic scientists make it out to be. (And for the record, I’m a scientist. But, as a scientist, I understand probabilities… and, yes, this is a one in a million, but absolutely NOT impossible. Yes, I get why scientists reject the idea, because it’s SO unlikely… SO rare. But you don’t make a movie about everyday, ordinary occurrences. So, the only question is: Is it even remotely plausible? And the answer is “yes”.). From that perspective, it’s a very realistic movie. Again, yes, there are details which push the bounds (size rarity and man-eater rarity combined are almost impossible; you cannot blow up an oxygen tank by shooting it). Some details stretch reality. But it is, for the most part, realistic… and much more so than it’s given credit for. Phenomenal movie. One of the best ever.

Considering that the entire town survived the whole year on the money they made from tourism in the summer, I think their reluctance to close the beaches was understandable. The mayor knew the townspeople would be upset and since he was acting on their behalf he didn’t want the beaches closed either. Let’s face it, sharks live in the ocean. Anytime anyone goes in there they run the risk of being bitten by a shark. Neither the mayor or the townspeople knew just how unique and bloodthirsty a shark they had swimming in their waters!

There are ways of protecting yourself while in the water with them, but you have to be very steady and careful but if the shark is curious and approaches there is ways of diverting its direction towards another direction instead of you, you just have to keep calm and not splash around remain steady and you'll be fine most of the time. as long as you are smart about how the encounter is coming up close to you.

Saw this when I was 7, didn’t scare me then. But a couple days later went to visit a relative with a pool and had a totally irrational fear that a shark would come up through the drain in the deep end. I still swan, but every time I went off the diving board, I hightailed it to the edge and heaved myself out like my life depended on it. 🤣I was fine when we went to Padre Island later that summer, though. Just had that brief moment of insanity. Thanks, Jaws/Bruce. Thanks, Kemi! Fun reaction!

Same 4 the knuckleheads on the pier..Shark said, "Oww, my belly's scarping bottom, better let it go, wouldn't taste as good as that roast, anyway." And the reason Larry wouldn't close the beaches is because he owed N.Y. mobsters $$ for his wife's medical bills /real estate loans. If his hotels didn't rent..he can't repay them... It wasn't Chief Brody's fault that the little boy was killed, he wanted to close the beach but it was the Mayor who wouldn't let him and then pressures the coroner to report that the woman was killed in a boat attack instead of a shark attack. Chief Brody is under the Mayor's authority so he didn't have much of a say in it. If anyone deserved the slap it was the Mayor who was greedy and only cared about making money from the tourists.

So what's an appropriate punishment for the two boys who played that fake fin trick? My own thought is to ban them from the beach for the rest of the summer, and then ban them from going trick or treating - they've used pup their costume rights by nearly giving everyone a heart-attack and nearly getting themselves shot.

No punishment at all. Those boys were friends of Alex kintner. They were heartbroken over the fact that their friend was killed because no one did anything to warn them about a shark and now the beaches are open again and they don't want to see any more of their friends get hurt. So they put on the fin to scare the people out of the water and try to save everyone's life. Those boys are heroes

1. Jaws was the first "Summer Blockbuster". 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed. 7. Hooper was wrong. The fish that hit the line was "our fish". 8. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. It was an ongoing trope within the filming due to budgetary problems. 9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the Indianapolis story. It' personal. 11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark. 12. Aside from Spielberg's pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea, 13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son. 15 The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.
@thickerconstrictor9037
@thickerconstrictor9037 9 ай бұрын
The line you're gonna need a bigger boat was not improvised. That is a myth. And my citation is an interview done by Carl gottlieb who wrote the screenplay. You can find this interview from the 2005 Jaws fest with Peter benchley and Carl gottlieb on KZbin where Carl states that Roy Scheider himself said that the line was in the film. Other sources have stated that it was a line that was being said over and over backstage as an inside joke and they put it in the script. And the actors were adding it in other scenes where it wasn't written and there were a couple times Roy Schneider said it again and they added a couple more into the movie. And there is no confirmation if it was our fish. It was always meant to be left to interpretation and people have given their opinion as to why they think it was the fish or not for decades. But the piano wire being bitten through is not a good reason because that strength of piano wire breaks at about 100 lb of pressure as confirmed on myth busters

Hi dear, I do have a bit of a problem with this movie. It is scary and intense and meant to focus on the irrationality of humans when it comes to "the unknown". And those themes are all well and good for me. What it UNINTENIONALLY did though, was cause a widespread fear are culling of, over the years, millions and millions of sharks of every variety, because we humans want to be able to swim safely in the oceans. 9:56 They are disappointed because the townspeople rely on the summer tourism money to provide for themselves all year. Closing the beaches means less tourists will want to come and thus less income for the people who live and work on the island. ETA: that’s why Quint mentions being on “welfare all winter” if they don’t pay him to kill the shark. So it’s not necessarily greed or selfishness motivating them…they are just worried about providing for their families.

One of the odd things I noticed about this movie. All the mom's are at least 50 years old with young kids? I live on Long Island and the BOOK was originally set in the Hamptons. Benchley the author, used to party in the Hamptons with his rich friends from Manhattan and read a book about some famous shark attacks off of the Jersey shore in the early 1900''s. He thought the Hampton's would be a great setting for a Shark attack movie. But Spielberg decided to switch it to Martha's Vineyard for the movie because the Hamptons were and are to developed looking for a sleepy New England town setting. And while there is no town called Amity, there is a town on Long Island called Amityville that you have to drive through to get to the Hamptons. So thats probably where he got the name from. Also, Amityville is the actual town the real Amityville Horror took place in. In the late 60's/early 70's, a troubled teenage boy killed his entire family in the house and thats when the ghost stories came public. But I think the boy claimed there were ghost in the house before he killed everyone, telling him to do it.

The only one that was close to looking the right age was Brody's wife. You have to remember, in the 1970's, women usually did not have babies well into their 30's like now. The mayor's buddy and his wife that he forced to go swimming, that woman is near 50 at least and he is near 60. And the woman who's kid was eatin has to be 40 or more.
