JURASSIC PARK MOVIE REVIEW | 33:24 - 37:10
Jurassic Park Movie Description:
Jurassic Park is a 1993 American science fiction action film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Gerald R. Molen. It is the first installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, and the first film in the Jurassic Park trilogy, and is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton and a screenplay written by Crichton and David Koepp. The film is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica. There, wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors and Hammond's grandchildren struggle to survive and escape the perilous island.
Filming took place in California and Hawaii from August to November 1992, and post-production rolled until May 1993, supervised by Spielberg in Poland as he filmed Schindler's List. The dinosaurs were created with groundbreaking computer-generated imagery by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs built by Stan Winston's team. To showcase the film's sound design, which included a mixture of various animal noises for the dinosaur roars, Spielberg invested in the creation of DTS, a company specializing in digital surround sound formats. The film also underwent an extensive $65 million marketing campaign, which included licensing deals with over 100 companies.
Jurassic Park premiered on June 9, 1993, at the Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C., and was released on June 11 in the United States. It went on to gross over $912 million worldwide in its original theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1993 and the highest-grossing film ever at the time, a record held until the release of Titanic in 1997. It received highly positive reviews from critics, who praised its special effects, acting, John Williams' musical score, and Spielberg's direction. Following its 3D re-release in 2013 to celebrate its 20th anniversary, Jurassic Park became the seventeenth and oldest film in history to surpass $1 billion in ticket sales. The film won more than twenty awards, including three Academy Awards for its technical achievements in visual effects and sound design. Jurassic Park is considered a landmark in the development of computer-generated imagery and animatronic visual effects.
In 2018, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Everyone misses the significance of Alan Grant's longing gaze at the pelicans: He starts the movie explaining how dinosaurs evolved into birds, and this park has all but traumatized him, and ruined dinosaurs for him - untill he sees the pelicans out the window, and smiles - his passion for dinosaurs still alive in him. Jurassic Park was an anomaly, a monster. The pelicans, with their real fossilized ancestors are not.

I wouldn't say he is "traumatized". He was certainly horrified by his real experience with REAL dinosaurs, but even after T-rex attack, while on tree, he explained to kids that they are simply animals and not monsters. Carnivores eat because they have to survive, that's it. That's a unique take though and I enjoyed reading your view on this last shot. I myself see him looking at pelicans as a reminder - that lifes goes on and it's beautiful. Calm after the storm. And that real dinosaurs left this world, but also left their heritage, in form of birds. And we all should appreciate modern animals equally as much as we do prehistoric ones.

Interesting fact: Hammond keeps saying throughout the film that he “spared no expense” to create the park. However, when Nedry is talking to Hammond about money it is implied that he is quite literally the lowest bidder for his job at the park. Hammond being cheap with hiring a programmer is the reason everything happens.
@samovarsa2640
@samovarsa2640 3 жыл бұрын
You beat me by a couple of seconds! It's also the case why there was no physical security at the embryo door and why Nedry was able to disable all security without there being any redundancies to work against such a thing. Edit: Hell, Hammond talking about his flea circus later is ANOTHER allusion to his hypocrisy. He says he wanted to show the world something real, but the whole idea that this park was something he could control was an illusion in itself. The dinosaurs aren't even dinosaurs! They're genetic chimeras made from splicing with frog DNA. Edit edit: oh my goodness, another thing I didn't see until now - Grant drops the shotgun because he thinks it stopped working, but you can see a shell half-way out of the ejector. He must have not pulled back far enough on the pump-action, causing it to jam and since he's a paleontologist, he wouldn't know that's what happened! Wow, this film is good!

I have yet to read the book, but I can imagine Hammond hired Henry Wu as head geneticist for relatively cheap too by appealing to Wu's inner narcissist with the glory of being the creator of the animals in a hopefully successful zoo- the "god" of the park, the "genius who brought dinosaurs back to life".

Its been a long time since I read the book but as I recall it Nedry was quite qualified to do the job he was hired to do but put in that low bid because he was in dire financial straits so needed to win that contract. Sadly they don't do 3D movies anymore as I was apparrently one of only 12 people in the world who actually liked it. I naively imagined that it was the next evolution of film along the lines of sound, colour, CG etc. But nope. Walt Disney, while yes, he was an animator (although Mickey Mouse was stolen from Ub Iwerks), he did not invent or "personally worked" attraction at Disneyland or Disney World. He simply oversaw it and took credit for hundreds of other's hard work. Like Jobs. If you think either man worked on anything, you would be quite naive. ;-)
@imagineer009
@imagineer009 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrVVVinK you do realize it's possible to personally design something without physically using your hands to work on it, right? Walt envisioned a walk-through wax museum of sorts originally but along with his Imagineers, helped take the ride system from "It's a small World" and designed it as a water based attraction. So maybe oversaw is a more broad term that is fitting all around but even so, he helped design the attraction. It was the last one he gave his say on. I'm not sure why you're so quick to diminish him by saying he stole other's ideas and took credit but it's well known that he gave credit to all of his employees who contributed to the success of his parks and studio. Hence the windows on Main Street in Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom forever enshrining the names of said contributors.

"I don't even know why they stopped doing animatronics." You are looking at the movie most directly responsible for their death. Back in '93, there were career-long effects experts who broke down into tears at the first sight of that brontosaurus, partly because it was stuff no one had ever seen before, but also, because they knew they were out of a job. Now, nearly 30 years later, it's clear that the CGI does not hold up as well, and the animatronics remain the most impressive part of the movie.
@fipse
@fipse 3 жыл бұрын
The reason is, animatronics are fucking expensive. Like real expensive. Like super real expensive.
@JesseGoldsmith
@JesseGoldsmith 3 жыл бұрын
@@fipse Yes, cost efficiency became the general thrust to move the effects industry towards more CGI and less practical effects, but this notion that animatronics and prosthetics effects will always (and have always) cost more than computer graphics is something of a fallacy. It all depends on the level of ambition, the bottom line of how much money you have to spend, not to mention who and what you'd be working with. If Phil Tippet wants to build a life sized tyrannosaurus rex, that's probably gonna cost a shit ton of money, and requires the bank roll of a major studio; but if you've got a crew of young kids (like Rob Bottin or RIck Baker) working on a David Cronenberg or John Carpenter flick for peanuts, and they're putting in extra hours just for the love of it, then you've potentially got a modestly budgeted major effects movie that could very hold up today.
@fipse
@fipse 3 жыл бұрын
@@JesseGoldsmith Yeah I was not thinking probably. Cost can be a factor but definitely depends on the animatronics. The flexibility of CGI is maybe an even bigger factor. No need to build and design animatronics way in advance when you can just put in some CGI effect in post-production.

The CGI has held up INCREDIBLY well for being nearly 30 years old. Yeah, the bronto at the beginning is dated, but countless hours were put into cgi of this film. Yeah, the animatronics look better, because of course they do. But the CGI is the most impressive part of this film, by a LOT.

32:31 this shot kills me as an adult. John hammond's was just a kid who loved dinosaurs with batman levels of money. He was so excited for it, thought he did everything right, spared no expense, and still ended up being the reason so many people died along the way. It's almost like hes looking at the original inciting event and is contemplating whether or not it was madness to try...... or whether he could start over and do it better. With the light piano main theme score it absolutely kills me.

"That was a magical feeling to that whole scene.." Yeah, that the first time in the film that you saw dinosaurs, but also, in 1993 this was the first time the audience had seen realistic creature effects. Going from those stop-motion dinosaurs to this? The commercials were very clever, they built tension, suspense, anticipation... and they didn't show dinosaur effects. The audience walked into this unspoiled, and that first shot with the brachiosaur? Everyone in the theater on opening day collectively said "oooooh.." You could hear it, and THAT was a magical feeling. Possibly the most magical time I've had watching a movie.

Oh Gods, that Space Balls sample about merchandising, that was so true when this movie came out: Toys, lunchboxes, backpacks, Tshirts, caps, stickers, happy-meals, you name it. The hype for the new Spielberg movie was huge. And almost all of it was directed at kids. Saw this at a press screener, two days before opening night. Even tough it was rated PG-13, people still said: "It's a Spielberg children's movie, let's bring our kids." And then the movie starts with Spielberg reminding his audience: "I directed Jaws, b!tches!" ( RIP raptor cage dude.) Perfect shocked silence for 2 seconds, and then a quarter of the audience said: "This isn't ET!" And left with crying kids in tow. It was glorious.

And throughout the movie, my parents and my sister were rolling their eyes and making a big point about how 'STUPID' that movie was, whilst looking at me and nudging eachother. Waiting for me to react. My dad was the ringleader but my mother really enjoyed watching me react so that she could say:" HEY! stop being a baby/mouthy or we'll switch the channel! Or you can go to your room!" it was a bullying household. If i would've spoken up they would have said:"look at him. Getting worked up over a stupid movie! Why don't you get worked up over getting good at math, mr. Professor" ..funnily enough, it was usually my father who would say; 'ok, that's enough'. My mother loved it when I was being humiliated because my dad humiliated her and I was lowest in rank. She would get my sister to keep going but then tell me that I should learn how to stand up for myself at the same time but then tell me: 'you are a typical MAN. Just like your father. Always wanting to be right and controlling things...Well mom; I never beat you up, did I? And whatever hint you dropped, implying to.us that he forced himself on you? (She will flat out deny this, I caught her out on so many lies, recently. It's staggering and I still feel afraid to just put her on blast.)And yet, you ended up marrying him.....I learned some pretty bad habits from her. and I'd wind my neck and keep quiet thinking in my head(one day, I will have my own tv and my own movie collection and you are not invited, nur, nur!") The t-rex coming through the glass was 100% part of the script and completely intentional. I mean, there's literally cameras in place for the shot. Child actors are one of the most heavily regulated professions in the country, so what do you think, Spielberg is just like "keep rolling, this is great stuff!" while they're screaming in genuine fear under a massive malfunctioning robot? The only thing that wasn't supposed to happen was the actual glass sheet breaking. Part of it breaks off after it's inside the car already. The dinosaur breaking into the car and the kids screaming is in the screenplay lmao

Fun fact about the raptors: we call them raptors after the first discovered member of the raptor family, _Velociraptor mongoliensis_ (swift robber from Mongolia). But prior to the release of Jurassic Park, the largest known species of raptor was _Deinonychus_ (terrible claw), which would have stood about 4-5 feet high and topped off at around 90-110 lbs. _V. mongoliensis_ itself was tiny; about the size (tail length included) of a peacock! But Spielberg wanted something scarier. Something BIGGER. So they fabricated the larger raptors for the movie. Then, just a few months before the film was released, a group of amateur paleontologists found a set of bones...and claws. They were clearly from some kind of raptor, but they were HUGE! By measuring the length of the leg bones, they were able to estimate the approximate size of the creature...and it was a dead-ringer for the alpha female raptor (aka Clever Girl), about 8-9 feet tall, nearly 20 feet from nose-tip to tail-tip, and at least a solid 800 lbs. The species was named _Utahraptor,_ the hunter of ancient Utah. You legit can go out into the badlands and find fragments of fossils flipping everywhere, just out in the open. But don't go out without a local guide and supplies; there's a lot of natural hazards out there. Heat and dehydration, rattlers, spiders, cacti, unstable ground...have your fun, find some fossils and bone shards, but please be careful and stay safe~

The sunroof falling into the kid's car wasn't scripted. Their screams were real, and faces were genuine. So good that Spielberg kept it in. Everything about this movie is amazing.

Seriously, do movie reactors just get together and discuss amongst themselves what movies they're all going to watch?

While it does seem like that. LOL! But, If you watch one, KZbin presents you with more of the same.

@@HelloMellowXVI I'm glad you liked JP. It's 1 of my favorite movies. I wouldn't recommend the sequel movies (which are very disappointing), but I would recommend the "Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous" series on Netflix. Also, let me know if you'd like any dino book recommendations. I like reading & reviewing dino books as a hobby.

I think it's more like the viewers watch multiple channels and make the same requests on all of them.

I suspect a lot of them are simply influenced by each other. You'll see that with some music reactors. Probably not a bad idea, it lets you see what movies are likely to attract the most views.

I still remember seeing this back in the theater for the first time in 1993. That first scene of seeing the dinosaurs was INCREDIBLE! One of the few times in my adult life where I forgot I was watching a movie. I realize they don't exactly hold up to today's standards, but back then, it was the first time people had ever seen a "living creature" created pure by CGI that looked so realistic.

Apparently the glass roof crashing on the kids was improv. The animitronic made it break on the kids and their terrified screams were legit lol. The crew was also scared but everyone agreed to keep the take.

Sick reaction bro, also to answer your question about the security at the park and in the embryo cyro vault is because the park isn't open yet and is not fully staffed. That's why Alan, Ellie, Ian and the lawyer were invited. Hammond basically needed a "go ahead" from them to open the park. He spared no expense.

To be fair Samuel Jackson was killed offscreen in Kill Bill as well.

This movie has my favorite bit of foreshadowing. In the beginning Dr. Grant is describing how raptors hunt, one standing in the open as a distraction and the others positioning themselves on the sides for an ambush. Then the hunter gets taken by that exact tactic later in the movie.
