Do you know what a 'straw-man' is? A straw-man is when you purposely misrepresent someone else's argument or point, or re-frame it as something it's not, knowingly. So for example, I know for a fact (and I'm willing to bet you do too) that literally *no one* making that assessment wants them to sit there completely silently during their reactions. An _honest_ framing of their point, is something moderate. So, for example, turning on subtitles. That way they don't miss important plot points while they're talking, because they can read at the same time. Or a favored technique by reactors, being to pause the movie to talk for longer periods, and resuming when they're finished. Neither of those two options require them to sit silently. Straw-mans are the *height* of intellectual dishonesty.

It’s funny how people react like this is a monster movie. It’s especially apparent during the T Rex chase scene when he said “wow, its just going to let them go?”. It’s easy to forget that these aren’t mythical creatures but real animals that actually existed. Much like Cheetahs, a T Rex was only capable of short burst of speed before becoming exhausted. So yes, it let them go because it wouldn’t have been able to keep pace with a car and for any length of time.
@mamalannightshyaman6 ай бұрын
Well in movies like Peter Jackson’s King Kong, the trex was falling to its death and still attacking the people like during a free fall to death as if it was thinking “I’m hungry” instead of “oh shit I’m about to die” That’s movies for ya
@wolf310ii6 ай бұрын
Its a movie, the T-Rex can hold the pace as long as the plot needs it. And even in the book they turn from "just animals" to "must hunt and eat humans at all costs" monsters. One arc is the T-Rex on a personal vendetta hunting Dr. Grant and the kids over the whole island, and the raptors eat their way through steel bars and concrete to get to Ian Malcom.
@NoelleMar5 ай бұрын
@@wolf310ii Right - and here, fully fed animals wouldn’t have the need to be so aggressive and eat so much. I mean they could, but it’s not particularly “realistic.” They also nerf the T-Rex somewhat (I guess slightly differently than in the book), but I don’t mind because er i don’t think that for example dinosaurs without feathers or a t-rex with impaired eyesight are pernicious myths lol. They still explain things fairly well.
@NoelleMar5 ай бұрын
But monster movies aren’t just mythical creatures. They can be humans, robots (not necessarily realistic as of yet lol, but they aren’t dragons), animals, or other. And these aren’t purely realistic portrayals of dinosaurs or even most predators, though they do have a lot of realism and imo explain things pretty well overall. But it absolutely is partly a monster movie, which is part of why I like this reaction. I mean I believe the real T-Rex moved a lot faster, its eyesight wasn’t based on movement, and predators wouldn’t necessarily be more aggressive than herbivores.

It doesn't matter how often I've seen Jurassic Park, that scene in the maintenance bunker when the Raptor shows up behind Ellie will always get me with the jumpscare. Side notes: The dinosaur sounds in this movie were made by combining sounds made by living animals and everyday objects. The Tyrannosaurus rex, affectionately known as Rexy, was a mix of elephant calf vocalizations (roar, snarls and growls), with koala, lion & tiger sounds and alligator gurgles thrown in and a dog playing with a rope toy (shaking the Gallimimus to death). The Dilophosaurus was a mix of hawk, swan, howler monkey and rattlesnake sounds. The adult Raptors were a mix of a walrus chest roar and dolphin mating scream, while the hatchling was a mix of owlet and fox kit sounds. The Brachiosaurus vocalizations were slowed down donkey brays, while the sneeze was a mix of an active fire hydrant and a whale breathing through its blowhole(s). (There's an "s" in parentheses because depending on whether or not whales have teeth or baleen plates (think of them as biological water filters) in their mouths, whales have either one of two blowholes) The Gallimimus's chief sound effect was made using the recorded calls of a mare (female horse) in heat, while their movements were inspired by those of ostriches. A good portion of this movie was shot on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Whenever I hear Hammond ask "Who's hungry?", my first reaction every time is "Not after hearing the Raptors rip the cow apart." Lego released 30th anniversary sets in honor of Jurassic Park and the one I have is based on Dennis Nedry's encounter with the Dilophosaurus.

So the real Velociraptor was actually quite small standing only about two feet high. The Raptors in the movie were actually modeled after the Deinonychus, but even then were enlarged as the Deinonychus would only stand about waist high. The fun thing is that when the movie began production, there weren't any known "raptor" species the size they made them. But only a few months before the movie came out, the Utahraptor was discovered which if anything is a little larger than the ones in the movie.
@gurdimeikenskjaldi50606 ай бұрын
If I'm not mistaken it was like 5 metres long xD I think the Utahraptor has been (or still is? sorry can't remember, probably they found bigger ones... can't remember if the Dakotaraptor was bigger...) the biggest known raptor

Dakotaraptor is currently classed as invalid due to controversy. The paleontologist who discovered the fossil is known for making mistakes or errors before, while another paleontologist claims with what he had for study that the fossil may be invalid. The one who discovered the fossil is also not allowing other scientists to study it. But you are correct that Utahraptor is currently the largest raptor...for now. A fragment fossil of what might be another raptor dubbed, "The Bissekty Giant," is currently being looked over, and if it's real then this fella would be larger than Utahraptor.

When this movie came out, not only was it cutting-edge in special effects, particularly as they were able to show the dinosaurs, but also cutting-edge (mostly) as to the latest science on them. It showed the public the "dinosaur renaissance" which had started in the 1960's as to overall what these creatures were. When I was growing up in the '50's and until this movie, dinos were thought to be, and portrayed as such, as extremely dim-witted and sluggish creatures. Movies used stop-action clay animation to represent them, or they filmed a gila monster up close looking up at it, and projected it behind the actors, blown up to look gigantic. The idea of a fast-moving T-rex, or even faster, and smarter velociraptors was startling to say the least. However, in the three decades since this movie, the science of dinos has possibly advanced as much as the century or so leading up to it. For instance, we know that many dinos, particularly in the branch that includes the T-rex and velociraptors, were extensively feathered. And just like we humans are descended from mammals, we ARE mammals, birds are descended from dinos but also ARE dinosaurs, specifically now called "avian dinosaurs." (And the raptor family look like birds with stubby wings, not bipedal lizards.) We also are able to determine colors of some of these, and like birds today, dinos could be brightly colored.

In the book they explain why the Trike is sick (it swallows stones, that the toxic berries have fallen on) and they go into more detail about the lysine contingency as some Dinosaurs escape to the mainland and some happen to find crops high in lysine. Lex is also younger than Tim, so Tim is the computer expert as well as talking to Alan about dinosaurs, so they separated the two interests to give both something to do. One reason this can't be done is the fact you cannot make a living creature from dead DNA. We have almost complete frozen carcasses of Woolly Mammoths, and a close living relative in the African Elephant, but we still can't bring them back (quite apart from the ethical issue of whether we *should*).
@wolf310ii6 ай бұрын
They are working on kloning mammuts, with mammut DNA from frozen carcasses. There isnt living or dead DNA, its just DNA. The reason that doesnt work with dinosaurs is that even if the DNA would "survive" the fossilation, it doesnt stay intact for so long. But (non avian) dinosaurs can be created by genmanipulation, because the dinosaur DNA is still in birds. They already created chicken embryos with tails and teeth during the research on genmanipulation.
@Fluffykeith6 ай бұрын
That always puzzled me in the movie, because the Vet in the movie says they checked and the Trics aren't eating the West Indian Lilac berries....but that's exactly why the Tric is sick in the books....
@lemonwheel65504 ай бұрын
@@Fluffykeith I guess what Harding meant in the film is that it's easy to tell the trikes are eating the bushes the berries grow on, but that little mini-plot only serves to broaden the overall plot that Hammond and Ingen are trying to play God while cutting many, many corners.
@lemonwheel65504 ай бұрын
Also, DNA is DNA. It doesn't matter if the body it's in is dead or alive. The problem with the methods described and used in the books and films is that, even with modern super computers, any dinosaur DNA found would be the equivalent of 0.000000001 of a single strand of genes. If you used the grinding method, you'd have to grind every trike fossil that's ever been discoverd, and every trike fossil still in the ground to get MAYBE 20% of the sequence. The idea that you can just pull blood out of a handful of mosquitos and have 95% viability with only a few holes to fill is absurd.

When they see the Brachiosaurus for the first time and you see all the dinosaurs stepping out of the water as if you've just stepped out of a time machine...that's the most magical moment in cinematic history. IMO Before this film, all dinosaurs on film were puppets, or stop-motion (clay) or lizards dressed up as dinosaurs. I mean they looked basically the same as they did in 1932's Kong. Then in 1993 suddenly dinosaurs looked like this, REAL. It still blows my mind with what was achieved. Just look at computers from the era, they had hard drives that held like..100 MP3 files. haha They very nearly used stop-motion to make these dinosaurs. There's even a video of a velociraptor done for this film. No film's effects have held up this well and it'll probably always hold up due to the use of very limited and smartly crafted CGI and peak big budget practical effects.

The 3D graphics stuff that was obviously pre-rendered? Nah, that was a genuine file browser of the period. And was running on a Unix system no less. One of the very few times a film showed something cool that's computer related and it wasn't completely made up. Hell, you can actually still run it today. In the film it was running on IRIX on an SGI computer - the same computers they used to render the graphics used in this very film, but today you can run File System Visualiser on any Unix decendant - like Linux. Probably also runs on OSX as well, also derived from Unix, and you can probably run it via the Linux Subsystem for Windows.

So I know that you said you tried not to talk so much during this video but I thought you had some great reactions and honestly wished you commented a little more. People probably just want you to pause, especially if the movie is in the middle of an exposition dump, I know I've felt sad when a reactor has missed an important plot detail because they were talking and then the movie didn't hit as hard in the end. Saw some people suggesting to turn on subtitles and I think it's a great idea but you've got a new sub either way!! Thnks for the reaction :)

The lesson learned in this movie is don't mess with something that you don't understand. Just because you can do something in science that's never been done, doesn't mean you should do it, as mentioned in the movie. Some scientists can be dangerous people, hence covid. Let's hope AI doesn't cop an attitude.

I love how everyone reacts to seeing that first brachiosaurus in the same way. Even with the CGI looking that tiny bit dated, it’s still such a powerful, awe-inspiring scene. Possibly the best scene in movie history. Just imagine if we actually got to experience that in real life one day.

I have to laugh how you talk about the special effects in the 90’s like it was the 1800’s. I saw this in the theater when it came out. It was amazing on the big screen. Sometimes theaters will play older movies. If you get the opportunity to see it on the big screen you should do it.

42:50 This happens in real life, too. Lions and cheetahs will give up on prey if they get too tired or if they lose their advantage. They said earlier that a Trex runs at 35 mph, and that jeep went into 4th gear, so the jeep is going at LEAST 45 mph. Also, a driving point in the movie is that these are ANIMALS, not monsters. Animals get tired. Too many dumber monster movies wouldnt have little details like that, but thatd what makes this movie slightly classier.

I saw it theater in 1993, I was 20. It was arguably the greatest theater experience I’ve ever had, before or after. The huge screens made the Dinos seem as though they were actual size, and the SOUND! It was awesome. And many times real props are more realistic than CGI, if done really well (which these were). Great reaction!

11:06 John Williams is a genius as usual. "Journey to the Island" is my favorite piece and def you've heard it before... 12:08 😊 The musical themes are really expressive and his use of pressure and release is perfect. This part reminds me a bit of Star Wars 14:40 In 1993, I was 12 and this blew me away.

The T-Rex was done beautifully. Anytime it is a closeup of the head and neck, they used PRACTICAL EFFECTS. The shots with it full body, those were CGI. The attack in the car was done outside, in mud, with rain machines and a HUGE realistic T-REX head. It actually was NOT supposed to break through the glass roof, but was stronger than they thought. Those reactions in the movie were REAL.

@joshuacoldwater6 ай бұрын
@@nissy9220 They absolutely WERE real animatronic dinosaurs. You can watch Behind The Scenes footage of the T-Rex, the Triceratops, and even some clips of the scenes with the Raptors. The young actor that plays Tim and Actress that played Lex, as well as Steven Spielberg have ALL stated that the VERY REAL T-Rex head was NOT supposed to break through the roof. It only occurred that one time, because the robot was large and getting heavier as it got wet. They had NO choice, that scene had to remain in the film. Another important point, This isn't the only film that they used Animatronic Dinosaurs in. Even in the NEW Jurassic World Films there were instances where CGI would NOT WORK. The best example is when Owen is trying to draw the blood from the "passed out" T-rex in the cage on the boat. 90% of that scene was done with a huge animatronic robot. I'm not sure if you watched the films Free Willy or Free Willy 2? Everyone focused on the fact that a real whale was used, and that is true one was- BUT it was only used in its tank, in Mexico. The young actor who befriended and swam with willy on multiple occasions IN A TANK. Never entered the water with a real whale. He entered the water with a GIANT ROBOTIC whale that they had created. It was designed down to the cells of the tongue, and it had 85 motions it could make- INCLUDING blowing air out of its blowhole. There are also behind the scene videos and interviews about this. In the 2nd film they re-built Willy and build him a younger sibling around 85% of the Whale footage in that film was using these robots. The rest was Natural Whales in the ocean. Now, people ask- Why the HELL would we stop using these type of effects. It is simple. People are always looking to make their film using the best and newest "Future Technology". Technology has evolved and is always evolving. When people picture "The Future" in their mind, they picture a computer having the capability of producing an image that is indistinguishable from the original. This is still not possible today, and it won't be possible until an actual Quantum Design system is achieved. If at any point, ANY point, there is human interaction on the computing end the image will always have a dull, or fake appearance. This is a HUGE REASON, that SONY has changed their Animation type away from hyper-realism and turned into multi-layered comic animation. Dreamworks is also doing the same. Yes, people are involved in making the real robots as well, BUT- The process is EXTREMELY DIFFERENT. It is much easier editing your creation when it is in the room with you and not just on your screen. The Harry Potter Series, The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, The Jurassic Park Trilogy, The Jurassic World Trilogy, Free Willy, Free Willy 2, IT, IT Chapter 2, Jaws, Super 8, and ET are all perfect examples of films that could've EASILY relied purely on CGI but they relied HEAVILY on PRACTICAL effects and used CGI as a backup. They are also some of the best films EVER produced.

@@joshuacoldwater yeh you completely missed my point. I meant their reactions wernt real. They screamed in every take. This myth originated from a tv interview years ago with the actor that played Tim. He said during one take the corner of the plexi glass broke. That’s it. Then it got exaggerated by people like you that try and pass it off as fact that they were actually screaming for real when they wernt because the screaming was in the script. Stop being dumb

The triceratops was an anamatronic robot. It was there. The poop was there. (Not real poop.) This movie was visually groundbreaking, but the cgi was pretty much limited to full body shots of the dinosaurs running. Everything else was anamatronic and practical.

Speilberg was shown some of the CGI, and was so impressed he called the animatronics guys into the editing room to watch. After the animatronics guys saw the animation, one of them turned to his colleague and said, "Looks like we're out of a job." To which his colleague replied, "Don't you mean extinct?" Speilberg liked it so much he put it in the movie.

There were Ducks, Turtles, and Gators in the waters that Dinosaurs drank from and survived the extinction event. I just love the idea of a Duck living near a Triceratops.
