The Axe gang opening is wild, strange, and so very Stephen Chow. It's atonally brutal, bizarrely absurd, and they never dance again 😅 It had me hooked immediately and only gets better from there.

NEVER underestimate the amount of damage an elderly woman can do with a flip-flop in her gnarled old hands. Where I am from we whisper the name of these diabolical _weapons_ with fear, and reverence. In my people’s native tongue we call it… La Chancla (shudders). When wielded by a grandmother it’s already tremendous power is increased ten fold. Beware La Chancla, Ryan. Bewaaaaare!

Thanks for watching in original cantonese language, so you get all the nuances and the intention from the voice tonation, as there will always be something lost in translation with dub. It was really fun watching your reaction and enjoyment to this movie. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is a masterpiece with a complex story that connects together very well from top to end, paced very well, and the music and sound effects are excellent, they purposely chose to record the music from live orchestra. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) has actually a lot of references to hong kong movies. It is not a parody but paying homage, giving respect and tribute to the inspirations of what Stephen Chow watches when he is growing up. Stephen Chow also said his idol is Bruce Lee. Stephen Chow put in a lot of hong kong and also western references, - Roger Rabbit style (lips bitten by snakes), - speedy gonzales (fat woman running), - the pigsty alley village is based on the lawless slum in hong kong, called Kowloon Walled City, ruled by gangsters. History traced this city back to the year 960 during the Song dynasty (960-1279). By 1990 the walled city contained 50,000 residents. It is demolished by 1994. - the landlady gesture in the car with the axe gang boss is exactly what bruce lee did, which is directly from classic bruce lee movie, The Way of the Dragon (1972). Look for "Bruce Lee knuckle cracks his fists from "Way of the Dragon" ". here : /watch?v=BQZG1qZNxUA - the powers of the 3 heroes are traditional powers, but the powers of the two musicians are mystical so they are more powerful than traditional powers. - each of the 3 powers, the kick, the staff, the rings are all from classic hong kong movies - the 2 blind musicians' powers is also from classic hong kong movie. Them using the zither instrument is reference to Deadful Melody (1994). The chinese literal translation of this title is "Six-Fingered Demon Musician". - the look of the 2 musician assassins with sunglasses is reference to The Blues Brothers (1980) looks. - When the landlord said, "who knew the beast could unlock the chi flow", and then the landlady said, Stephen Chow is "The One", referencing Matrix (1999). - the white and black outfit that Sing (Stephen Chow) wears is what bruce lee wore from classic bruce lee movie in Enter the Dragon (1973). You see this outfit worn by Jet Li too in Fearless (2006). - spiderman reference, about with great power comes great responsibility line. - The Shining reference, when the blood pour out from the beast's cell. - This movie's time period is during the era of 1920s. - The Axe Gang is based on the real Axe Gang founded in 1921 in Shanghai around Japanese Occupation. - The top hats you see on the gangsters is a reference to the hats in Gangs of New York (2002) - Toad style is from chinese martial art novel. - The landlady and tenants is directly from classic hong kong movies, The House of 72 Tenants (1973). - The fierce landlady with the passive husband is also from another classic hong kong movie. - The buddhist palm is fictional and derives from classic novels and made into a classic hong kong movie and also has its own drama series. - the landlord style is tai chi that uses flows. so he looks slimy and has good evasion and transfer the energy flow directed at him to another direction. - the landlady scream power, called Lion's Roar, is also from classic hong kong movie, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (1978). - the fight scene with many axe gangsters and them flying in the sky is reference to Matrix 2 Reloaded (2003). - why Sing or landlady/landlord didn't kill, because the philosophies of different chinese martial arts is not about killing, but self defense, forgiveness, discipline, spreading love, not evil, etc. before the tailor dies, he said : "What are you prepared to do?" is a reference to The Untouchables (1987) dying scene. In the ending where the metal flower flew to the Ice Cream girl, it is a reference to Forrest Gump (1994) ending scene with Tom Hanks and the floating feather. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) took references from Kung Fu Hustle and also gave special thanks to Kung Fu Hustle in their credits. Watching Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is like watching the entire history of Hong Kong cinema. Anyone, especially those from Hong Kong, who can get the references will be extra blessed. In a 2010 interview, actor Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy". In 2021, American filmmaker James Gunn called it "the greatest film ever made".

I've seen two of Stephen Chow's movies, this and 'Shaolin Soccer', this one is the better of the two but 'Shaolin Soccer' is really fun too. What's really impressive is that he wrote directed and starred in both. The Beast is a shout out to X-Men's Beast, although the actor Siu-Lung Leung has no muscles but he looks a lot like Bolo Yeung, Hong Kong's muscleman icon in the '70s. This movie references so many iconic movies & tropes, The Godfather, Looney Tunes, The Mask, The Matrix, and at least half a dozen others. Not to mention the Wuxia references: the Buddha's Palm, the Taichi style, Lion's Roar, Toad style, all are prominent tropes in Wuxia novels & comic books. A sweet, sweet reminiscence of Hong Kong's cinematic glory in the old days. An absolute masterpiece.

Both the landlord couples were actually martial artists & stuntman/stuntwoman back in the 70s/80s. Both of them trained in the Peking opera with well known action stars in Hong Kong such as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung & Yuen Biao since young. The same stunt coordinator that worked on The Matrix also worked on this film. the Land Lord was a stunt double for Bruce Lee back in the 70's, so what ever stunt Bruce couldn't perform he would stand in and take his place. the Land Lady was a Bond women in the 70's, in one the the 007 James Bond films. Coolie, Donut and the Cook are also kung fu experts.

"How did they catch him to begin with?" They did not. Since no one could stop The Beast he let himself into the asylum so challengers would not seek their own destruction. In a way he was protecting the world by doing so. The only reason he pursues the couple and Stephen is because he wanted to kill them. Then he would likely go back into his asylum room

Thank you for your reaction and using the original Cantonese with subtitles. Stephen Chow stomped on a soccer ball and said "Still playing soccer?!' This is his way of distinguishing from his previous popular movie: Shaolin Soccer. It's about a group of Shaolin monks who became regular people in the modern world. However, the monastery needs money to keep running. The monks band together to join a soccer tournament to get the money. It has the same type of humor as in this movie.

In fact, when this movie showed on the big screen in China, I was in the theater to see it, we people at that time do not really like this one. We all love Stephan Chow, but this movie is not what we expected at that time. But with time passed, I love this movie more and more. This is just beyond our thought back in 2004. His talent is far beyond our mind.

I'm sorry but the english dub is so much funnier to me. I love this movie so much either way but I was so bummed it got banned on youtube (but not in sub?). I ended up ordering the dvd online since its one of my favorites. I feel old saying this but im starting to re appreciate dvds again since im tired of movies getting bounced from streaming service to streaming service. I'm not willing to pay for all the streaming subscriptions..i just pay for youtube premium since i watch KZbin more than anything. Thanks to you and many other creators...it definitely worth it. In the english dub the guy who was showering yells up "Hello Mrs.Slum Queen, did you forget to pay your water?" Instead of just "land lady". Its little things like that i love about this movie. Really enjoyed your kung pow: enter the fist btw 🎉😊

This movie actually wasn't very well received at the box office. It was so much ahead of it's time people don't appreciate it enough. It is my all time favorite and people laughed at me back then.

Wasn't well received at the box office? "Kung Fu Hustle opened in Hong Kong on 23 December 2004, and earned HK$4,990,000 on its opening day. It stayed at the top of the box office for the rest of 2004 and for much of early 2005, eventually grossing HK$61.27 million. Its box office tally made it the highest-grossing film in Hong Kong history... Kung Fu Hustle managed to become the highest-grossing foreign-language film in North America in 2005"

You should watch Shaolin Soccer (2001) next. Since you enjoyed this one. Shaolin Soccer (2001) is also brilliantly Directed, Produced, Written, and Acted as main character by the legendary Stephen Chow himself. Same as Kung Fu Hustle (2004). Please get the original cantonese language version, hong kong version. That's means preferably not the Americanized version (which is also cantonese spoken, but they edit in english text overlays and dubbed sound effects, changed some music). Stephen Chow made both films emphasizing for the international audience in mind. It is his first big break into western market. He is already very famous and well known in Hong Kong, south-east asia, Asia in general. We love his unique style and humour. By the way, just last month, Stephon Chow announced to the public that he has finished the story draft for Shaolin Women's Soccer. He is auditioning for female actresses and we are finally getting another Stephen Chow directed movie (which is very rare nowadays), which is also a sequel to Shaolin Soccer (2001), after 22 years.

@22:54 The yinyang symbol because the Landlord’s main style is Tai Chi. Hence, his bendy relaxed state. And just in case you didn’t know, the musical assassins were using the instrument to turn their concentrated evil energy into real world energy via soundwaves. I’m sure you know, traditionally, martial art masters can controll their energy and it’s pretty normal to see this kind of accepted ‘magic’ in a kung fu flick. You’re going to get a million recommendations for Shaolin Soccer and they are correct. I’m a big fan of Stephen Chiw’s earlier stuff too. Less special fx but super amazing writing and funny clever dialogue. Really, really, really clever dialogue and wordplay.

@23:44 The mime communication here is a direct lift from a Bruce Lee movie. The inside-joke is that Landlady actress didn’t know the famous Bruce Lee scene and the guy she was doing it to, taught her, coincidentally he’s famous for looking like Bruce Lee and played him in a successful Hong Kong TV bio.

I would have recommended watching Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer (2001) before. But it's only because of the small reference to that movie at the start of this one. No big deal. And also because I think this one is much better. Shaolin Soccer is still worth watching though.
