The slaughter of Candelaria, as this episode became known, was a slaughter that occurred on the night of July 23, 1993, near the Church of Candelaria, located in the city center of Rio de Janeiro. On the evening of July 23, 1993, just before midnight, a Taxi and a Chevette with covered plates stopped in front of the Candelaria Church. Then the occupants shot dozens of people, mostly teenagers, who were sleeping near the Church. Later, in the investigations, it was discovered that the perpetrators of the shooting were militiamen. As a result, six minors and two older died and several children and adolescents were injured. According to studies conducted by associations linked to amnesty international, forty-four of the seventy people who slept on the streets of that region lost their lives violently. All the victims were poor and black. The names of the eight killed in the episode are inscribed on a wooden cross, erected in the front garden of the Church: Paulo Roberto de Oliveira, 11 years old Anderson de Oliveira Pereira, 13 years old Marcelo Cândido de Jesus, 14 years old Valdevino Miguel de Almeida, 14 years old "Gambazinho", 17 years old Leandro Santos da Conceição, 17 years old Paulo José da Silva, 18 years old Marcos Antônio Alves da Silva, 19 years old Many Americans believe that Rio de Janeiro is the capital of Brazil. In fact, it was the second capital of my country. the first capital was Salvador. A city located in another state. currently the capital is brasilia, which is also located in another state. you are right about the architecture of the city in the film resembling that of the Portuguese. rio de janeiro was founded in 1565. Just 65 years after the discovery of Brazil by the Portuguese.

You know what was most terrifying? It was seeing that on live TV, watching the situation unfold before our eyes like a thriller movie. Like, this is my generation’s “OJ Simpson chase” situation here in Brazil, you know? But way more terrifying. I was a kid and I remember having nightmares about being a victim of a crime like this. The media ate this like breakfast. They didn’t even care. But then I grew up, off course, and I’m really happy that they made this film because when brazilians got to watch it we had the chance to see the story through different lens you know? He is not -just- a villain. He’s a product of our fucked up system. He had his story, his dreams, his fears… this movie is really important because of this.

I was a teen , in this episode (it was in 2000), i remember after he leaves the bus, and the shot, all people (regular people) that was there seeing the situation, run to the bus, to kill him with their own hands ... old people, ladies, young...(it was a rich neigbourhood)...very sad...that shocked me very much, there is a good documentary about this episode and sandro's life called ''Ônibus 174" (2002)

The area you are commenting about is a neighborhood in Rio's city center region. The constructions look european cos Pereira Passos conducted a major urban reform in 1903 to turn Rio's urban aesthetic into a Parisian like vibe for the Exposition Universelle and get rid of all the tenement shacks and slums that formerly existed in the region. The Candelária Massacre was a real event. Those kids were cold blood assassinated. And Brasil has over 70 thousand kids living on the streets according to public data.... In that exact situation the movie portraits

I remember as if it were yesterday what happened on the day of the hijacking of bus 174. The movie Beethoven was on TV and the programming was interrupted to show the case, which happened in a upscale neighborhood of RJ. It was an entire afternoon with all the TV channels following until the early evening. In the documentary "Ônibus 174" he explains that he was not killed by Snipes precisely because of the TV coverage. when he finally got off the bus with the hostage and there was the shooting, it was total despair, because you couldn't tell who had been hit. Then it turned out that the The policeman's shot was wrong and in a reflex Sandro killed the hostage. Police killed him inside the police vehicle after arresting him. Then this mother appeared saying that he was her son and only later was discovered Sandro's story

André Ramiro is playing André Batista. Batista is a real now Colonel from the Rio de Janeiro police who was a lieutenant back then. He wrote a book called Elite da Tropa (Elite form the Squad) this book was also written by Rodrigo Pimentel who became the inspiration for Capitan Nascimento, later Lieutenant Colonel (second movie). The story of this movie was a mix of real life events and a mixing of fictional life based in real life. BOPE wanted to shoot the suspect but the Governor did not allow that to happen because it was for him bad press. This police lead to the creation of a more professional BOPE and the creation of a team dedicated only to rescue operations in BOPE hence Elite from the Squad.

It's amazing how this movie played with Brazil, because like, the guy left the isolated favela on the periphery and went through it all until he killed the innocent girl who shocked Brazil in such a way that even the bope changed the organizational structure of dealing with hostages in operation.

some people hate this movie and say it's trash. For various reasons, but the justification I hear most is that the director turned the boy into a victim. but he's a victim. He and hundreds of other children who still live on the streets to this day in Brazil. he tried through this film to show that the biggest culprit of all this is the system, the state, the country. my country is still very unequal. the director of elite squad 1 and 2 also directed a documentary on this event.

It is nice that you found the movie... as I said on the elite squad movies this one is an important part of the story... Jose Padilha, the director of these three movies, even though people might say he is beying partial, he always tried to show the real situation people were in .... Many will tell you that the documentary based on this incident (bus 174) is better than the movie but it lacks emotion... Anyway... It is obviously a big part of Brazil, but Brazil is not only that (crime and favelas)... it is time for you to choose movies (happy or sad movies, does not matter) that can show you more of Brazil and our ability to make good movies... Central do Brasil is a very good one in my opinion, it was even nominated to the "Oscar".... o Auto da Compadecida also is a classic... very light and funny....

About the Candelaria Slaughter, it was only found out that the shooters were dirty policemen because one of the children went to sleep on top of the newsstand, woke up with the shots and wirnessed everything without them knowing. I remember watching about this bus hijacking. The police here has zero training to deal with situations like that, and they jumped the trigger and shot the hostage by accident. Actually, the police here has zero aim, as well.

Sandro acabou caindo, levando Geisa junto, e disparando três vezes contra a professora. A multidão invadiu o cerco feito pela polícia. A professora morreu a caminho do hospital.

I discovered your channel today and binged some of your content, honestly your perspective on our films makes me want to just chat with you over a beer, it is refreshing to see an American with such an perspective of our culture and our people's struggle, much love from a university student of cinema. The reason the snipers didn't shoot Sandro when he was showing his face (which happened multiple times in real life) is that the media was covering everything live, so politicians gave the order not to shoot him. Something similar happened in 2019 when there was a hostage situation on a bus crossing the Rio-Niterói Bridge. But this time BOPE took the chance and shot the hijacker when they had the chance, freeing all hostages unharmed.

This film portrays a real story, and the woman who was held hostage really died, last year in Rio de Janeiro a similar scene was repeated only this time the hunter (sniper) from BOPE took the opportunity and neutralized the bandit because he was too upset and the scene in that movie could be repeated. My opinion about the operation is that it was a success because even though there are people going through bad situations it doesn’t justify their actions if they put other people's lives at risk.

This film is based entirely on real events. In 1993, the Chacina da Candelária took place (Candelária is the name of the church where those street children used to get high). This massacre happened because some traders around the center of Rio were tired of the robberies that those children carried out in the area. And then the merchants hired some hired killers to kill the children. A few years later, a survivor of the Candelária slaughter hijacked a bus (the line 174 bus), and that tragedy happened. When he got off the bus, with a woman taken hostage, the woman ended up being killed. Alessandro did not die there when he got off the bus (he was murdered hanged by the police inside the van, on the way to the police station). The hijacking of bus 174, in 2000, was broadcast live by the largest Brazilian television broadcaster (which is the second largest television broadcaster in the world, TV Globo), and was broadcast live to other countries. Unfortunately, especially in this region of downtown Rio (a region that I love, with a lot of history, a lot of culture, a lot of art), there are still many children and people living on the streets.

Hey, GG! Did u recognized the actor that interpreted 'Lil Dice' role? He's older in this movie. He was the kid talking to Alessandro on 3'25" of your video. And the actor that interpreted the older 'Lil Dice' (Lil Zé - Zé Pequeno) appears on 12'15" makin fun of Ale's 38.

The reason the snipers didn't shoot him is that the media was covering everything live. The whole Brazil watched on TV live for hours, so the state government gave the order not to shoot him. As the girl says in the movie "it was an election year, no one was going to shoot you". But in the end, everyone was exhausted. The random victim, Geisa, was 20 years old, died of shots by the police and Sandro. She was my neighbor. I remember her funeral. So sad.

Eu lembro deste dia. Aí soube do ocorrido.
