"Is life always this hard, or is it just when you're a kid?" "Always like this." Great and excellent character driven story. All three leads turn in a masterful and unforgettable performance. They really don't make movies like this anymore. Fun Fact: Gary Oldman said his screaming of the now iconic "Everyone!" was improvised to make director Luc Besson laugh. Convincing Extras Fact: During the filming involving all of the police cars on the street, a man ran from a store he had just robbed. When he encountered the movie set by accident, he saw all of the "police" and gave himself up to a bunch of uniformed extras. Never Crossed His Mind Fact: According to Jean Reno, he decided to play Léon as if he were "a little mentally slow" and emotionally repressed. He felt that this would make audiences relax and realize that he wasn't someone who would take advantage of a vulnerable young girl. Reno claims that for Léon, the possibility of a physical relationship with Mathilda (Natalie Portman) is not even conceivable, and as such, during the scenes when such a relationship is discussed, Reno very much allowed Portman to be emotionally in control of the scenes.

This movie's writing is brilliant. It's so clever how it draws its audience in to sympathise with an absolute sociopath, to the point where many people who watch this movie end up seeing Leon as a positive father figure and "protector" for Matilda. You are one of the very few people I've seen who immediately acknowledged the harmful influence Leon has on Matilda. Speaking of which, the way Matilda has been written is frighteningly accurate. As a child, the only type of affection Matilda learned from her familial environment was sexual. When Leon acts benevolently towards her, her automatic response is to thank him with sexual intimacy. She exhibits risk-taking behaviour and promiscuity, both very strong coping mechanisms among children who have gone through severe trauma. She constantly taunts Leon with her sexuality, testing him, because that's how she feels safe. As long as Leon rejects her sexual advances, it means he truly cares for her, because, in Matilda's mind, altruism is always transactional. The more kind Leon is towards her, the more Matilda wants to act out, to prove that it's transactional, because that's how her parents behaved: her father was nice to her mother only when he was horny. At the same time, it's also the only way Matilda knows how to express gratitude, because, again, that's how her mother manipulated her father. It's rare to see characterisation this good. And yes, to answer your question, the production and distribution was European. Americans would never dare write something so raw and honest.

Great points. Due to its sexual sensibilities and some other questionable scenes, Columbia Pictures, the film's American distributor, had the film cut down to 110 minutes. Shree saw the original 134 minute cut from Gaumont, the film's production company.

a few months after the tragedy of Brandon Lee, Luc Besson's "Leon: The Professional" (1994) was already in production and since 12-year-old Nathalie Portman handled so many guns in the plot, her parents hired a weapons expert to teach her how to be safe with extreme prejudice, assembling and disassembling parts, telling the difference between bullets and blanks and even checking the weight of loaded and unloaded guns!

This is a really great movie. It's also Natalie Portman's debut as an actress. I read somewhere that Natalie wasn't even interested getting into acting as a child, and her story was the classic 'sitting at a cafe with a friend, and some talent agent happened to notice her'. I also heard that Natalie almost never screws up with her lines or acting performances, and directors only have to do one or two scene takes with her. Matilda and Leon were both children in different ways, and their being together benefitted both of them. Leon could have gone sleazy with Matilda, and she probably would have been open to the idea of being intimate with Leon, but he never takes it in that direction. I read that the director of this movie likes to take creepy concepts to the edge, without going over the edge. Natalie Portman's mother was also on the set the whole time, and she didn't have any issues with the scenes.

It’s true to the extent that she was discovered by a fashion rep, who convinced her parents to get her a talent agent. However it’s not true that she wasn’t interested in becoming an actress, she very much was. But she did have to fight her parents to allow her to do this role, understandably. (The movie was shot after the fatal accident on the set of The Crow, which killed Brandon Lee, so her parents obviously had all sorts of concerns). In the end the parents relented, after negotiating some concessions. For example, her parents are the reason Matilda stops smoking in the movie.

Jean Reno plays a simillar role in Luc Besson previous movie: La Femme Nikita. In it, he plays a 'cleaner' that like his Leon character, doesn't talk much but gets the job done (meaning he leaves no one alive). Jean Reno is a very charismatic actor, I don't think I ever saw him in a role that I didn't like his performance, be it good guy or bad guy.

Jean Reno and Gary Oldman in their golden years, in a joint film - a huge gift for fans! I would recommend Wasabi - an action comedy with Jean Reno.

The way Tony holds on to Leon's money does seem suspicious and you wonder how much Leon can and shoud trust him. It makes sense that he does Leon's books for him because Leon can't read. It is suspicious that Tony never bothered to teach Leon to read or insist that he learn. He does give Leon up, but we did see; Stansfield's men had all those kids hostage and Tony's organization had a working relationship with Stansfield, Tony was professionally bound to give Leon up. But when Tony tells Mathilda to go to school, that means *he paid the tuition* which we know was delinquent, and he did love Leon in his way and does miss him, but probably realized that he completely took advantage of him by keeping him in a child-like state so as to be his personal Terminator. So we can assume that, as an older gangster, (one that is smart enough to have *survived* that long) the money Leon earns is laundered through Tony's little bistro and hasn't been pissed away, and that he's at least good for paying her tuition, room and board until she's 18. My sequel idea is that she grows up to be an FBI agent that specializes in tracking top assassins.

Good choice. Very popular movie among the reaction crowd. It was Oscar winner Natalie Portman's acting debut back when she was still in grade school. Also showcased fellow Oscar winner Gary Oldman's ability to play a complete nutjob very well. I've only seen him showcase his loony side in two other films, though.

Gary Oldman improvised most of his lines , this was a spin-off of movie from La Femme Nikita 1990 , Victor the cleaner (Jean Reno) , hes just a side character in that . Also very short production , when you consider , it took 30 days to write and 90 days to film ... while waiting that Bruce Willis was free for Fifth Element .

@@pete_lind It's always unique when actors/actresses are given freedom to make up with lines and if they're actually used in the final cut. Another thing is when something accidental occurs, but the cast stay in-character so the director doesn't yell ''cut'' and the scene keeps going. Such incidents with the latter example are Matthew Lillard getting hit with the phone in Scream, Leonardo DiCaprio cutting his hand while smashing a glass in Django Unchained or even Steven Ogg tripping over a fence in Grand Theft Auto 5.

I enjoyed your review. It is a French film shot in NYC. The director also did the 5th Element starring Bruce Willis. It does take place in 1994 which means that $100 is $200 in 2023. I probably paid $3-4 to see the movie when it came out in the 90s. The mafia was a major player in the crime world in the 90s, because he was old school, Tony would have made good on taking care of Matilda financially. He did take a beatdown from Oldman. If you are interested in the cast and crew thoughts, there is a KZbin video called "Léon: The Professional 1994 - Behind the Scenes - 10 Year Retrospective" that gives some surprising insight into the characters in the movie.

Idk if anyone else has mentioned it, but I always found it kinda funny that Gary Oldman played a corrupt agent that loved to listen Beethoven, and in the same year actually portrayed Beethoven in the movie “Immortal Beloved” a semi biographical film about the life and loves of the classical composer.

15:00 Benny is played by the late Keith A. Glascoe. Acting was his side job while he was a firefighter for the FDNY. He was one of the 343 firefighters who died on Sept. 11, 2001. It's eerie that his character lives and his fellow corrupt cops got killed in this film. The reason why Leon is bleeding is he's getting sloppy, vulnerable to injury during his assassination work. He's becoming less of a cold killer and more of a human being after saving Mathilda.

​​@@xhul2558Maybe, but when we, the audience, meet Leon, we're given the impression that he's an invulnerable bad ass hitman, who likes milk and Gene Kelly films; sleeps in a chair so he's not killed and has a houseplant and a moral code ("No women. No kids."). Said code comes down on him in the form of Mathilda, a woman in a kid's body. He could have killed her, but he would be a hypocrite. So he's really human when he doesn't and protects her at a cost.

Leon was a defacto solo spinoff movie for a character he portrayed in "La Femme Nikita" (1990) by the same writer/director a couple years earlier. It's not the *same* character for reasons I don't want to spoil, but the role in "Nikita" was a minor side character with just a couple scenes that damn near stole the movie, made Jean Reno an international star, and was basically Leon-but-not, for reasons that will be made clear when you see it. After "Leon" he appeared in the first "MIssion Impossible," the first US Godzilla remake (not worth sitting through) and the ensemble spy thriler "Ronin" (1998). He is currently in Kevin Hart's TV series "Die Hart" "La Femme Nikita" was remade by Hollywood ("Point of No Return" 1993) and inspired *two* TV series adaptations.

Thank you for another great reaction. You really understood Matilda. Luc Besson is one of my favorite directors, and his choices are so eclectic. After Leon, he did The Fifth Element. Two of his films that I haven't seen mentioned in the comments are Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson and The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec. Both are excellent movies. For a look at an alternate universe version of Matilda, had she taken a different path, there is Kick Ass. Chloe Grace Moritz steals the show as Mindy Macready aka Hit-Girl. Nicholas Cage does a great impression of Adam West's Batman. He plays Mimdy's father, Damon Macready aka Big Daddy. My last recommendation is the French film Brotherhood of the Wolf. Set in 18th century France, it involves the legendary Beast of Gevaudan. The Extended Director's Cut is the best edition. Bye.

Just an interesting trivia: Natalie Portman's parents kinda supervised the whole shooting of the film and they even changed the script. They told Luc Besson Natalie would have to be seen with a cigarette in only up to 5 scenes, no more. Of course she was not allowed to actually inhale real cigarettes and her parents also insisted on showing that Mathilda is forced to quit smoking (which was not in the script at all). Of course Besson agreed on all these terms and Natalie Portman just kicked the door of her acting career with this stunning debut performance.

Sorry for how this will sound, but... It was really "great" having the hints & comments from someone who've also seen some shit from a young age. I've seen the movie more or less when it went out, as a teenager myself. And many times since then. Also checked many reactors. I used to be annoyed by how misunderstood this movie often was. Then I realized it's normal not to understand it at first. I didn't. It has layers, it was unfair of me to judge. But you, you caught many things which took me so long to understand. And some parts you taught me new ways to see this story. I fancy myself as a clever person, and I have some good reasons to back-up that belief. Therefore I can also tell when I'm outsmarted. Which is somewhat pleasant/unpleasant, but in the end pleasant. Better to hang out around people more clever than you, even if it stings a bit sometimes. That one watch is an instant subscribe. Definitely checking the rest of your reactions.

It's one of my all time favorite movies. ------ I'm glad you cacuaght onto many of the morally grey themes iin this movie. ------- I think people who are uncomfortable with Leon and Mathilda's relationship are a reflection of their own insecurities. -------- Yes at first it leaves you wondering, but right away you understand that Leon does not reciprocate her feelings of teen infatuation. -------- He tells her it's not right. ------- He can't go there. -------- The behavoirs that happen in this movie are understood from your own experiences. It lets you know the mindset of Matilda and the adults around her, since you had similar experiences. -------- Leon loves Matilda like a daughter, you can see it with his actions. -------- He chases the boy outside of Tony's restaurant. He cloaks Mathilda in his fatherly protection. ------ I'm so glad you understand the prism through which this movie is trying to operate. Althought you might have wanted to prejudge the direction of the moive, you let things play out and got the best possible ending that coudl have been desired to keep "Leon - the professional" the awesome classic it became. -----Thanks again Shree for such an awesome reaction and commentary.

I would expect Jean Reno to be less known in the States. Well, you will remember him after this movie. He was also in the 1998 bad American Godzilla movie. 6:15 That's tension for you. The feeling of anticipation creates scares much more effectively than guts splashing all over the place all the time. 16:17 If he opens the door he officially gets involved in this whole drug ordeal and that's a problem. 27:14 You could check out Singin' in the Rain as well. I don't even care for musicals and keep coming back to this one. 34:13 He was doing his job. It's occupational hazard. 38:11 It's just a random schmuck. Maybe he's a low-tier pawn in some drug chain, at best. 39:28 Just got a little drunk, is all. 48:01 This is some actual ninja stuff. There's lots of texts talking about ninja would hide above the door or in the corners at the ceiling, cause humans naturally look at a 45 degree angle and don't look up. Wanted to see your general opinion. Some people seem to read bit too much into all of this. She's twelve, goes through a trauma and gets saved by a man with some giga chad energy and a dark past who can also grant her vengeance. Of course she thinks she's in love, but Leon never acts anything more than like a stepdad.

Fantastic reaction and commentary. This is one of my favorite movies and I have watched it countless times. It is one from my adolescence. I was around 13 the first time I watched this movie, not long after it got released on home video. I have grown up with this movie and coincidentally have also grown up “with” Natalie Portman. I am 2 weeks older than her. For various reasons I won’t get into, I very much identified with Mathilda in many ways. This movie marks a few milestones in my life, and helped me figure some things out about myself. It also made me a lifelong fan of Natalie Portman 😆 She was in another movie called Beautiful Girls from 1996 where she played a young teen that develops a crush on an older man. There is a whole lot more going on in that movie than just Natalie’s storyline, which is only a few quick scenes and exchanges of dialogue. The movie has a big ensemble cast and takes place in a small town. It focuses on a group of mostly guys, coming home for their 10 year high school reunion and the chaos that ensues when they start to examine their lives and question their choices, etc…

Hey Shree, you totally hit the nail on the head when you spoke about teen girl and different type of romatic attachments. -------- MAtilda has a crush on Leon, but does not know how to express it outside the bounds of a non-abusive, non-sexual context since her previous family environment was abusive, oversexualized. -------- So when Leon wraps her in that fatherly cloak she mistakes it for romatic love.-------- ON the flip side Leon never reciprocates the feeling the MAtilda expresses for him, since he see the love of Matida as giving him emotional stability.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience, it's heartbreaking but lovely to see you as you are now in spite of it. This is perhaps the best review of this movie I've seen, your insights are spot on. Many, especially those in the States get hung up solely on the inappropriate relationship and age disparity between the two, which is a problem but is really a symptom of much deeper issues being her trauma, issues with trust and abuse, misattribution of kindness and affection as improper feelings of romance, Leon's developmentally stunted behavior and inability to engage with the world around him unless it relates to being an assassin. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant reaction! Also there are 2 versions of this movie, the domestic and international versions. I believe you were watching the better international version which gives more background into Leon's history and the more complicated relationship between him and her. The domestic version which was edited to be safer for overly sensitive American audiences, ironically felt more cringy because audience imaginations try to fill in those edited out gaps with even worse details and motivations than those spelled out in the international version. Lastly, I didn't pick up on this until I rewatched the movie, the director does something fascinating by juxtaposing those feelings of impropriety with the sheer amount of violence saturating the movie, leaving the audience desensitized to the violence while extra sensitive to the cringy aspects of their relationship. This was apparently very intentional from the director to illustrate how we should really be feeling more uncomfortable with how pervasive violence is in media as you would with inappropriate relationships; a lovely flourish from the director.

Hey Shree, you totally caught on to the brillance of Natalie Portman's on-screen debut. From a young age, she was acting like a top-tier pro. Wow, so extremely talented from a young age. -------- What more can be said about Gary Oldman he steals the show. ------- He's so psychotic and neurotic at the same time. He takes this character to the top floor in terms of acting ability. --------- His outburst of, "EVERYYYYYYOOOOOONE!" will forever be iconic.

U r a wise woman. i've seen a few of these reactors video & they have misread d movie 50% of d time, u r d only one who hasn't miss a thing. U correctly point out d dynamic of their relationships & d their mindsets. Maniacal laughter etc. This movie is about "sometimes a stranger can love u more than ur family" check out "Chasing Mavericks" if u r into such movies. i would like to add on to d sleep with 1 eye open mindset, Leon is playing d reverse psychology of anyone coming to kill him would not do it in d daytime coz u would think d target is awake in d daytime thus his best choice is to sleep in d daytime & also d position to let intruder thinks he's awake so that any noise woke him up he still has a chance.(gun by his side) Also d knot in Mathilda stomach is the stress/anxiety coming from d fart up family situation. #Wisdom

Nat absolutely deserved an Oscar for this movie! Leon was doing the best he could. Was it great parenting? No. Was it what Mathilda needed at the time? YES. "I think we'll be ok here Leon."

Though he may be a creeper (just look up his dating/marriage history 😬), Luc Besson can get brilliant performances out of his actors. Jean Reno is at his finest here despite having very few lines, Natalie Portman crushes it in her debut, and Gary Oldman being terrifying is always riveting to watch.

@Leon is one of my top 20 movies but you should watch Dangal (2016) that one is in the top 10. I still haven't forgotten you haven't watched Unhinged, although Dangal is much better. @Society sais she should be solving math problems, not goodness herself. @I don't think this movie represents lessons in life as much as just a story of 2 beautiful people in an unlike encounter that changed both their lives for the better, may it not have been for long. If there is a lesson the lesson is never give up because you never know what can happen if you try to keep on going.

the first night, when he was about to (put her out of her misery), Leon knew that she was going to suffer and the whole scenario was going to lead to doom. 'put her down, now'... 'no women, no kids's if you look at Portman's performance vs the SW prequels, and then exactly after with "V for Vendetta", you realize how much George Lucas needs to stay away from the talent (write the story, design the images, leave the performances to others)
