@@BaddMedicine The best meme from first movie is easily in the next half, when The Lady Galadriel of Lorien explain what women are upset about: "Things that were, Things that are, And some things that have not yet come to pass." When it comes to favourite character, there can only be Sam. When you finish the 3rd movie, you will know why. I swear Tolkien must have put every redeeming quality of his entire WW1 unit into him.

Just a fun fact, Tolkien and CS Lewis (author of Narnia) were roommates at one point. They literally shaped the way fantasy fiction is made, we really owe them so sooooooo much ❤️
@carlalussini Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure there are fanfics/notepads about that "and History will say, they were roommates" 😅 I haven't heard og gossip about it, but you can't tell me Sam isn't Frodo's twink lover. All the other relationships yes, great examples of male friendship. But Sam and Frodo?? And how everyone here (both actors and the director) chose to play it up like it is in these movies, it must be a known hidden fact about him between fans and queer history buffs. I remember seeing something about him being in love (but not reciprocated by) a friend in his youth.... Maybe it was CS Lewis! I'm def looking up videos about it after the seeing the reaction to part 2.
@malachai1381 Жыл бұрын
@@carlalussini Yeah no, there is nothing like that between Frodo and Sam. This kind of revisionist self insertion is the kind of thing Tolkien spoke against, and one of the worst bastard children of post-modernism, in the form of "Death of the Author". I mean no disrespect, but authors intent matters.
@DM-nw5lu Жыл бұрын
Malachai 13 The author is dead. Who cares what his intention was? I don't. Let people interpret the literature how they want. Sam calls Frodo beautiful and mentions his love for him multiple times in the book. I doubt it was meant to be read as "gay" since Tolkien was a Catholic but that shouldn't stop people from reading it however they want.
@annabanana7659 Жыл бұрын
@@carlalussini I mean, sure? If you want to look at their relationship like that, fanfics are a thing. But one of the things I do appreciate with Tolkien's books and the films was that men can still foster friendship with 'soft' interactions. Aragorn's not afraid to give hugs, be vulnerable in front of his friends and even kissed Boromir's forehead as a sign of farewell. Men had been encouraged to be stoic while girls are okay giving each other hugs and hold hands with friends so seeing men can act so openly with their feelings, romantic or not, is a breath of fresh air. Personally, I would think Sam and Frodo's relationship is more of a platonic soul mate's and brotherly relationship rather than romantic love; not to mention how much Sam's smitten with Rosie Cotton especially in the books. And yes, Tolkien and Lewis *were* real life besties and they would even poke fun of each other's stories as Lewis found Tolkien's too long and complicated and the latter would find Lewis' too simplistic and was surprised it was popular with others.
@Bjjbhcoa86 Жыл бұрын
@@DM-nw5lu I'm sorry but if you don't care about the author at all, why do you consume their work?? This post-truth era is baffling lmao

@glennjanot81282 жыл бұрын
@@aronorenda Yes, but to be fair, when Gollum, or Smeagol, laid eyes on the ring for the first time (it was found by cousin Deagol), he immediately fell to its corruption while Bilbo did not. It's likely that after Bilbo had returned home from Mount Erebor, he put the ring away and out of his mind for a few decades. And also, after Gollum/Smeagul got the ring, he had it for 471(!) years. So, Bilbo could have been become disfigured at some point as well, if he had given in to the ring and kept it for hundreds of years.

Something to keep in mind about the ring, that goes over a lot of people's heads, is that it's essentially cursed. Like Gandalf said, "I would use this ring for the desire to do good, but through me it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine." It brings out the worst in people by twisting their thoughts and desires - men are easily susceptible to this because they desire power. So, when you see Boromir or anyone else acting up around the ring, it's usually because the ring is "poisoning their minds" That's why Frodo was chosen to be the ring bearer. Hobbits are a peaceful people with no real desires beyond good food, drink, and company. They're naturally resistant to the ring, but not immune.
@RichardWalkerBD2 жыл бұрын
Also, think of the ring as a vessel that contains a portion of Sauron's spirit. That's why it has a mind of it's own, because it's a physical representation of Sauron's mind.

Frodo wasn't chosen, he essentially did it because someone had to. However, he was certainly the best person available for the task, since he never desired power. He just wanted to go back home. The moral of the story is that you don't have to be powerful, skilled or wise to make a great impact on the world.

the guy knew about 30 languages of our world - including many dead languages (like Latin, Old Norse, Old English and Old Gothic) - and he worked for over 50 years - all his life on this huge world (Arda) in which Middle-Earth (Nordic Mid-gard) is only one continent. He started developing it about 1910 and written some first charachters of elves and some basic poetries during I WW (1914-18). The last changes in his writings were done at the and of 60s. Though it was not LOTR as most people seemed to think today - that he wrote it in the trenches of I WW. No, he just wrote there some few poetries about elves and elven lands from the 1th Age of Arda. LOTR is set in 3 Age. Tolkien created many languages although only 3 or 4 (elven sindarin, elven quenya, a human language of Numenor - adunaic and maybe dwarven khuzdul) are developed enough to be used beside the books. There are Tolkien fans who are esp interested in his languages and even learn to use them - to write poetry in them, or to speak on conventions. One of such Tolkien linguists - David Salo was Jackson's consultant who had translated all lines from screenplay and from songs for the movies that actors used. And also the bulk of choir music we hear in soundtrack was sung in elven language (and orcish and dwarven also) and Salo's translated it too. Most of what the choir sings in the movies "background music" is actualy either books verses or screenplay's lines translated into elvish. BTW languages I've seen on Amazon bookstore a book about languages of Tolkien and there was 14 languages mentioned in the title :)

@@BaddMedicine yes :D And the real possibility was that if Elrond could not heal him by eliminating the toxic shard of the blade - as the shard was magicaly toxic (Morgul blade used by Nazguls) and striving to his heart, thats why after few weeks the wound was not healed as itself as it should be - they should have to kill Frodo themselves moments before he would be transformed into a wraith. Becouse if he died with the shard in him or if the shard touched his heart and he died from piercieng his heart then he would become a nazgul and becouse he got the Ring he would be unstoppable to run from them and give it back to Sauron as a nazgul should. It would not be Frodo but unemotional, souless wraith without free will and any other drive than giving up the Ring to Sauron. So before Frodo become the nazgul they should have killed him in Rivendell. That was also a real perspective at this point. But when Elrond tells about how he "is resilient to its evil" its about the Ring but in the book the other incredible thing was that Frodo was resilient also to the influence of the shard of Morgul blade in him and he consciously or unconsciously but limited its progress toward his heart and thats why he lived for 17 days with this magic shard in him. Which was very astonishing for elves, becouse they knew that there were few persons who lived for some time after such wound, and never healed.

If you watch closely, the ring hits Frodo's finger and then corrects itself to slip on. The ring knew the wraiths were hunting them so it purposefully slipped onto Frodo's finger to alert them as to its location.

The scene with "looks fairer and feels fouler" lines between Frodo and Merry is also interesting for me becouse its one of those early scenes in the movie when we can see the differences between the main hobbits. At the inn (of the prancing pony) Sam's general behaviour was showed - that he usualy looks about for possible threats for Frodo "that man in the corner" and acts accordingly "I'll have you Longshanks" (btw Longshanks was one of other names Strider was called by the people of Bree). Merry is from an old and rich family of practical people who plans for long time as they are sort of governonrs of big province of the Shire (Buckland - thats why Merry knew about "Buckleberry Ferry" it was near his home :) Its very good to remember that from those 4 only Sam is a gardener for hire the other boys are from higher class - Pippin's dad is actualy Than of the Shire, which is smt like king's governor for the Shire obligated to protect all land in a time of crisis. Frodo is from old and respected clan about which he speaks with Gandalf at the start of the movie. Only Bilbo was not respected in Baggins family becouse he got on adventures in far a way lands. :) And Merry is the most strategic mind of all 4 hobbits. Pippin is showed in the movie as the unpredictable joker becouse he was the youngest in the book (5 years before the age of adulthood as hobbits count it at 33 - btw Frodo is 33 at the first scene and Bilbo's b-day party was also Frodo's b-day party in the book), Sam is humble servant who simply idolised Frodo even before the Quest, and Frodo is more introspective and intuitive. So Merry thinks more far-sighted than Sam but is also more down to earth than Frodo - Merry evaluates only what he sees (Aragorn, or other persons) while Frodo looks deeper into things and persons (as he did in the book scenes in his meetings with other charachters). And IMO in the movie he is showed as the one of the hobbits with the most intuitive thinking. Frodo was scholar and poet in the book. Thats why the line of "feels fouler and looks fairer" was his line from the book, although in the book he spoke it to Strider not Merry. :)

Frodo is 33? I guess I shouldn't be shocked considering they age very slowly.
@TallisKeeton2 жыл бұрын
@@BaddMedicine 33 for hobbits is like 18 - 21 for us becouse its their age of adulthood, so 100 for hobbits is like 70 for us and the two eldest of all hobbits lived to 130, so we can assume 130 was like 100 for us. So 111 year old Bilbo should have looked like 80+ human but he looked like human at the age of a bit over 60 I guess and it was becouse of the influence of the Ring. Frodo was 33 at the start of the book. But in the book between their b-day party and the start of the journey had passed 17 years so Frodo is 50 at the start of the Quest. We can also insist that in the movie Frodo is 50 but this should be a bit better justified for the sake of the movie :) So I assume that at 50 a hobbit should not looked older than 30 - 35 year old human. But Frodo could have looked younger becouse he was given the Ring at his 18 b-day party and from this point he stops aging. But I prefer to assume that movie-Frodo at the b-day party and at the start of the journey is not much older (maybe half a year or a year) becouse in the movie actualy nothing points to us that all 17 years have passed. I think we can assume for the sake of the movie :) that in the movie Frodo still is at this younger age and the time between b-day party and the Quest was not more than IMO half a year. And from what I can assume that it was half a year? From the lines of the innkeeper Barliman who told Frodo that Gandalf was not seen in Bree for half a year. Bree is a town just beside the borders of the Shire. When Gandalf left Frodo and Sam in this wood [ in the movie - in the book they never started the journey with Gandalf - Frodo sets out from home in the company of Sam and Pippin, and they met Merry at the border of the Shire becouse that was Frodo's plan all along. ] and rode south he must have been riding past Bree becouse he left a letter for Frodo in the care of innkeeper (in the book). And riding from Shire to Gondor on fast horse should not be taken more than 2 months so I assume that movie-Gandalf was absent from Bree for half a year becouse he was inprisoned by Saruman. Though in the book there is much more traveling and fighting for Gandalf between his last meeting with Frodo and his inprisonment at Saruman's tower - for example he fights with Nazguls at Amon Sul - the hill where later Frodo was wounded by Nazguls. So we can chose our prefered interpretation of the movie timeline - either Frodo is 50 (35 on appearance) but he stopped aging at 33 (20) so he looks much younger than he should OR in the movie there is no 17 years between the start of the book (b-day party scene) and the start of the quest - and so Frodo still is looking as he should just few months after his 18 b-day party :)

One of my favorite lore pieces from the books is knowing that the orcs were once elves who have just been corrupted by the shadow. This is why Frodo thought the inscription on the ring was elvish, and this is also why orcs live forever except in battle. Tolkien always goes ham on that Christian allegory.
@pamelahofman17852 жыл бұрын
At 13:18, the guy with the baseball hat on (forgive me for not knowing your names yet. The "Oak" maybe?) said that the Hobbits are a safer bet to carry the ring since they don't crave power, and I'm so totally impressed that you got that so quickly. The ring does corrupt everyone around it and the ringbearer most of all, but Hobbits are more resistant to it because they are perfectly happy living a simple life and don't crave more. They fall to the power of the ring too, but much more slowly than others because of their innate nature.

That was the Oak. That ring was impressively powerful! Fun to see what it does to people.

One of the best things about being from NZ is having grown up while this was being filmed. The scenes for leaving the Shire were filmed on my neighbors farm, Arwen’s stunt rider Jane Abbot lived down the road, and her husband did the makeup/styling for the horses; in particular, the black riders. It was pretty awesome! I went to a country elementary school with about 90 students, but Jane and Florian (the actual horse from the movies, Viggo bought him for her!) used to come perform a chase scene with some Black Riders in full costume for the annual school fair, followed by a sort of stunt show where they jumped through hoops and stuff.

One day I asked my brother to watch the movies with me since he's such a big fan, so he showed me the Extended Version. He was very much like Quinn, laughing at my reactions but never spoiling or being obnoxious about facts. And just like Oak, I was like "oh, that's it, that's the meme!" hahaha. What a wonderful experience. I'm a mega fan now and I already read The Hobbit. Right now I'm reading The Fellowship of the Ring and it's been so amazing, I can't believe I ignored them for so long! Now we reference the movies all the time, I love it.

Sauron is a Maia: an angelic (obviously fallen) spirit of incredible power. Gandalf and Saruman are also Maiar, but in human form.
@BaddMedicine2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh.. thank you.
@TallisKeeton2 жыл бұрын
and Balrog too was a Maia (Maiar is plural) :) These are lesser spiritual forces/angels sent to the Earth (Arda) to developed it and to protect it and to teach and protect Eruhini - Children of Eru (transcended God). Eruhini were the Firstborn - elves and the Secondborn - men. The bosses of Maiar are Valars - we can think about them as arch-angels. There were 14 Valars - 7 guys and 7 ladies. But very many of Maiars and every Maia could be helper and soldier and student of a Vala. Sauron was fallen Maia but he was only a servant to greatest of Evil lords - Morgoth, and Morgoth was Vala who went rogue and has the Satan function in this story. Gandalf mentiones Morgoth in Moria when he speaks about "Balrog of Morgoth" as Balrogs were "soldiers" of Morgoths army and powerful fire deamons.

One of my favorite production details from this movie: When Bilbo drops the One Ring. ~ Notice how Bilbo can't even put the ring down; he can only turn over his open hand. ~ Notice how, even after Bilbo turns his hand past the point when the ring should have fallen, the ring continues to cling to his hand. ~ Notice how the ring lands once it finally falls from Bilbo's hand; it doesn't bounce with a chime, it lands flat with a resonating thud. In the background material, Peter Jackson insisted that the One Ring be treated as its own character at every opportunity and how something as simple and mundane as "Bilbo drops the ring" can convey so much depth to three different characters simply by how the cinematography and sound design are executed.
@Towelgravy Жыл бұрын
7:35 In retrospect, I'd like to think that the "in fact, I mean not to..." are not words he spoke, but rather words he thought. Due to Gandalf being a Maiar (and this being from his perspective) I feel as though this was an accidental case of mind-reading by our wizard friend instead of a vocalization by our dear Bilbo.
