On the hair: Galadriel (who btw is Arwens Gran, Elronds mother-in-law) is said to have legendary beautiful hair, desired by many for 1000's of years. 3 times generations prior one of the greatest Elf's ever to have lived - Feanor - asked for a single hair to help create a beautiful jewel, sensing something dark in him Galadriel refused all 3 times. Now when a simple Dwarf - who have a troubled past with Elfs - asks her for a hair, sensing the goodness in his heart, Galadriel gives him 3.

@@mr.osclasses5054 Actually the entire Lurtz vs Aragorn fight as full-on legit. The Lurtz Prosthetics prevented Lawrence (the Stuntman in the costume) from having peripheral vision and proper depth-of-field. So when Lurtz punched Aragorn, Lawrence legit gave Viggo a right cross to the face. Likewise, Lawrence legit headbutted Viggo during that part of the fight sequence. Also, when Lurtz throws his shield and pins him to the tree, Viggo told Lawrence to actually throw the shield hard and run full tilt at him because nobody was liking the shots they were getting with Lawrence holding back. Viggo said he needed to feel the pressure against his throat from the shield to give a proper reaction and that Lurtz running at Aragorn wouldn't look convincing if Lawrence was trying not to hurt Viggo. He also assured Lawrence and the crew that he would be able to slide out and dodge the incoming slash. So that's what they did. Lawrence threw the shield hard enough to literally pin Viggo to the tree, then took off running with the express purpose of taking Viggo's head off with the sword. Viggo, true to his word, wriggled free and slid straight down just in time for the sword slash to miss. Oh, fun fact that not a lot of people know: You know when Lurtz pulls the dagger out of his leg and licks it? Not in the script. That was improvised by Lawrence. Peter Jackson loved it and kept it in. And, yeah, like you said, Lawrence accidentally threw the dagger straight at Viggo due to, again, the prosthetics. Viggo, having taken his sword training seriously, reflexively brought his sword up and parried the knife. Bob Anderson wasn't kidding when he said, "Viggo is the best student I ever had." When a World Class Swordsman gives that kind of praise, you know the man is a bonafide badass. So yeah, that entire combat sequence was done at speed, no pulled punches, balls-to-the-wall albeit unintentional most of the time. And that's why it looks so good.

Quick Lore Dump: Gandalf was VERY powerful being however when he was sent to Middle Earth he was told to SEVERLY hold back and to lead the people of the world through wisdom instead of sheer power which is why he doesn't do all the stuff we wanted him to do. Saruman can do a lot of that crazy stuff like change the weather because he chose to go against those rules set for them when he decided to go after the ring.
@corruptangel6793
@corruptangel6793 3 жыл бұрын
I heard it also had to do with Sauron's power. Sauron wants to hold dominion over Middle Earth, not destroy it so he holds back the majority of his power as these guys have cataclysmic power. Thus, if the Wizards go all out, he'll also go all out which is why they don't. Saruman's methods are aggressive and thus heavily frowned upon, but still technically within the limitations given.
@KS-xk2so

@@corruptangel6793 Most of Sauron's essence and power is in his ring, which he doesn't currently possess, so thats why he's weakened. The Istari are Maia cloaked in flesh, so that alone restricts them from using their full might. Once Saruman went evil, he used as much power as he was able to, since he didn't care if he pissed off the Valar anymore, however its still far less then their full might as true Maia's.

Few facts: -The balrog and Gandalf are both of the same species. The balrog are basically corrupted wizards who fell to the power of Sauron (it’s just cliff notes of there past you guys, don’t get all pissy) -Galadriel is considered to be the most powerful elf currently alive & shes Elronds mother in law, which makes her Arwens grandmother. -Frodo felt responsible for Gandalf’s death because he chose to go into the mines, and pippin felt responsible as well since he made that noise that awoke the orcs. -Aragon being raised in Rivendell & being an heir to the throne gives him respect from all three main elf kingdoms of middle earth. -Legolas has diplomatic immunity because he is the son of King Thranduil, a Sindarin elf and king of Mirkwood, a major elf kingdom in middle earth. -Galadriel giving Gimli her hair was written by Tolkien as a tribute to stories about maidens giving knights a tribute or a gift. But there is special significance to it in Middle Earth. And it’s why Legolas smiled when Gimli told him he got three of Galadriels hair, a very high honor gift

The actor who was playing the leader couldn’t see very well with all the make up on his face and actually miscalculated his throw and threw an actual real life dagger at his face and Viggo (Aragorn) honest to god actually blocked it. The reason that the whole council meeting was squabbling just being in the same room as the Ring, why Isildur first kept the ring rather than destroying it, and why Frodo seems to handle it much better is because the Ring feeds on your ambition in order to achieve its own goals. It offers you what you most desire; usually wealth or power or success, in order to trick you into doing what it wants. Boromir wanted to use the Ring to protect his people, and it used that to get him to make that speech. But since Hobbits are such simple folk, most of them don't have grand goals or great ambitions. Most of them are fine with just sitting in the Shire getting drunk and farming vegetables. The Ring actually struggles to influence Hobbits a lot more than the other races, since it doesn't really have much to work with.

I love the detail that Legolas looks a little extra unnerved by the idea of a Balrog being after them. Those things lead the battle against one of the greatest elven kingdoms and won. It was Gondolin, the same kingdom that forged Gandalf's, Thorin's (character from The hobbit), and Bilbo's swords. It was also Orlando Bloom's idea to make Legolas look confused at Gandalf's death. Wizards and elves are immortal unless killed, so he wanted to seem in denial for a moment at the concept of never seeing Gandalf again.

One of, but not all of Gandalf's powers was to give other's hope. He is there to encourage and guide. He is not there to "fix" your problems like other wizards, but to encourage you to find the power within to fix it yourself. Galandria is a Ring Bearer, a "witch", and ancient (at least 7,000 yrs old) so she is very intense. When she said to be a ring-bearer is to be alone she is not only talking about Frodo, but herself as well. She told Aragon they wouldn't meet again because as she said to Frodo she would be leaving Middle Earth and remain as she is.

Fun fact: Tolkien based Sam on his experiences in WWI, as there was a common role of Sam: he would follow one of the higher-ranking officers around and be his servant of sorts (in the book, Sam calls Frodo, 'my master', for example). That's why Sam is always helping Frodo. Indeed, Sean (the actor of Sam) even did as much to Wood on the set. He would always help him, trying to really get into the role of helpful servant and friend (a very strong bond found there in WWI, of course).
@Laurelin70
@Laurelin70 Жыл бұрын
Because Elijah Wood was the youngest on set. But in the book Frodo is way older than Sam: he's fifty when he starts his journey, while Sam is 38. Considering that hobbits live usually until 100 years old and that their coming of age is at 33 (and that the Ring slowed down the aging of Frodo), you could imagin them as a very young-looking 35yo (or even a 40yo) and a 20something. Pippin is 28 when he goes with Frodo, so he's a teen, for hobbit's standards, think of him like a 17yo; and Merry is almost the same age than Sam (36), so like a 20-21yo.

I love that you stopped and really evaluated the fact that Frodo just lost the person he trusted the most (Gandalf) and how scary and devastating that would be. So often people think Frodo is just a little wuss when they truly don't know how to empathize and put themselves in such a situation. Would you even have the strength to do something like that if the world depended on you, or would you fall and try and let someone else do it in the hopes it would still work? I tend to think most people would choose the latter. Also, just a little heart-clenching side note: When Sam dove into the water and couldn't swim, Frodo was horrified, but it's even more feelsy when you know that both of his parents drowned before Bilbo took him in.

Sam's connection to Frodo represents something that doesn't really exist anymore. He's Frodo's Valet/Batman. In WW1, officers were assigned servants called "batmen" who were essentially the modern equivalent of a knight's squire. Attended to the officer's needs like cooking, cleaning, and preparing his weapons, and would accompany him into battle. The relationships built on fighting a war together for so long were very close and many officers continued to employ their batmen as personal valets/butlers when the war ended. They're also friends from the same hometown.
@TedBrogan
@TedBrogan 3 жыл бұрын
Yup. And I believe it was because of Frodo's "wealth" - based on Bilbo bringing back the treasure from Smaug, that led to the Baggin's reputation and Sam taking on the role as a friend/neighbor. I bet they would have probably been mates regardless, but what many have said is that since this kind of relationship was so normal at the time Tolkein wrote it, to him it fit the characters naturally. And IMO, totally fits how that relationship evolves throughout the trilogy. Now, don't get me started on the people who project their own issues on it and want to make Frodo and Sam gay...

AFAIR in the book (or other of Tolkien's writings which are many) Sam was called Frodo's squire by Gondorians or by the king. And that was IMO becouse Frodo was ennobled by the king so he was granted title of Lord of the reunited kingdom and "Lord Frodo" was translated into elvish as "Daur Iorhael". Becouse elvish language - sindarin - was in Gondor a ceremonial language and like a Latin for their elites.

If you remember the introduction to the movie, it explained that there were 3 Elven Rings of Power. Well... Galadriel is the bearer of one of those rings. That's why, on top of her beauty, she's so powerful. The 3 Elven Rings of Power were the Rings of Fire, Water, and Air. Galadriel was the bearer of the Ring of Water which she used to protect her realm of Lothlorien. Elrond was the bearer of the Ring of Air (the most powerful of the Three) which he used to protect the realm of Rivendell. I won't tell you who the bearer of the Ring of Fire is because that would be sort of a spoiler, but I will tell you that you have already seen him in this movie.

During Boromi's death scene, you can hear a choir in the soundtrack. The choir isn't singing random vowels, they're actually singing in Elvish. The english translation of the lyrics? It's a line from the books: "I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only what they defend," For bonus hurt points- In the books, those lines were said by his little brother Faramir.

Many ppl gives such hating to the new trilogy ("the hobbit") but its not bad, its q. good, although not as good as the old one (obviously) :) but still properly good movie and worth a while. and why its not as good as LOTR? Maybe becouse its battles are too long and tiring sometims and the original novel was more of a comedic childrens story so we must consider that before watching. And becouse the adaptation of "the hobbit" got to become a mix of two different "worlds" - the old one from LOTR trilogy which is darker and more epic one, and the more comedic and fairytale vibes of "the hobbit". Thats why ppl hate it I think, becouse they can feel the stiches of those two "worlds". But the best kind of watching "the hobbit" trilogy is actualy seeing it as prequel of LOTR and the new movie has tons of details and enhanced topics to make it very nice prequel of LOTR and esp more dark and dramatic adaptation of "the hobbit" than this short childrens novel was. I just love the new trilogy's expansions of charachters and places and inclusion of things and persons who were in the Tolkien's universum but were not in this novel yet :) And the acting in the new trilogy is nearly as briliant as in the old trilogy. We must think about the vibes of those two adaptations as the difference between, lets say "Indiana Jones and the last crusade" - a saving the world story of preventing the nazis from the hold of St.Graal and "the goonies" - kid's adventures with pirates :) The two trilogies are just on different level of seriousness and epicness. :)

You lot cracked me up!!! Just a little lore: the glowing scary lady is Lady Galadriel. She’s well over 5,000yrs old. She’s literally the most powerful elf left in Middle-Earth. Yes, she can see the future and that’s why she gave different gifts to different members. Sam won’t need a dagger but he’ll need that rope. The guys that’s stood next to Galadriel when she came down the stairs is her husband Celeborn. They had one child, Celebrian. Celebrian married Lord Elrond (Matrix) of Rivendell & they had 3 kids Arwen (the lady elf that save Frodo from the Nazgul) & the twins Elladan & Elrohir. Arwen is well over 2,500yrs old and she’s willing to give up her immorality, as only 1/2 elven’s can do, to be with Aragorn. I say all this to point out that Galadriel is Arwen’s grandmother & if they marry Aragorn will be Galadriel’s grandson-in-law.

When Galadriel actually gives Gimli the 3 hairs, that is the highest gift of them all. You see, in the Silmarillion, Feanor the crafter of the 3 silmarils (stones which create immense conflict in the world) asked for a hair from Galadriels head in order to use in the crafting, 3 times he was denied this from her. Yet, her being an elf, and Gimli being a dwarf (already on bad terms), for her to give him the 3 hairs was immensely meaningful in the grand scheme of things. He did not ask for the hairs with arrogance, she asked him what he desires and he simply stated his desire, for one. She gave him all 3.

I used to write papers on the author, Tolkien, for my days in University. The lore is so deep, there's so much that cannot be explained for context in these movies, so newcomers to the fantasy genre can get overwhelmed with how much new information is thrown at them without explanation. Peter Jackson did a fantastic job at making it all digestible for casual watchers, and satisfying for the fanatics. I have such a deep appreciation for Tolkien's works and the world that he built, and I love watching people experience it for the first time. Speaking of Nutella, I once made breakfast for my cousin's daughter, and I made peanut butter french toast, and stacked it three slices high with a layer Nutella and sliced bananas between each slice, then topped with Nutella, banana slices, and whipped cream. Was the tastiest thing I've made with Nutella, and a fun treat for kids. Also, she's right. She IS fairer than the elves. Nicer hair, too. Besides, how can you go wrong with a girl that rocks an AC/DC shirt?

The movie uses next to zero CGI, but instead do practical effects and sets and makeup instead. That’s why it looks so good compared to a lot of stuff using CGI. The Sam in most stories is the best of people and usually a sidekick like Supernatural, Captain America’s BFF, The Lord of the Rings, Transformers, iCarly, and Holes. Everyone needs a Sam in their lives.

An extra sad part about Gandalf’s “death”, he had a ring of power too and it’s power is hope. So Gandalf literally has magic that inspires hope in the people around him so when he fell they literally lost the hope he brought to the fellowship.

"Give them a moment! For pity sake 😢" Boromir was the most human character. Despite his flaws and his weakness, he had strength and courage. The Ring preyed upon his his biggest weakness and in a way his biggest strength; his compassion. The Ring preyed upon his fear that his people and even the others like the hobbits will fall to Sauron. It tempted him with an easy victory or an impossible truce. Aragorn also appealed to Boromir's compassion, but instead of feeding his fear, Aragorn asked his friend to have hope. Aragorn told his friend to have grear honor and valor in defense of his people. In the end, Boromir was tempted, but he knew Aragorn was right, and died defending his new friends. He died with his honor intact. He acted as as King should to his people, but knew in his heart who the true King of Gondor was.

Gandalf isn't just a wizard, he's a minor god. When he was sent to Middle Earth, his powers and knowledge got reduced to only the amount deemed "necessary" by the Supreme God. The Balrog is actually just like Gandalf. However when they chose evil, they became corrupted and turned into demons, although they don't have Gandalf's limitations. 18:24 "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The Dark Fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun! Go back to the shadow! You shall not pass!" --This is Gandalf revealing to the Balrog who he is and who sent him. Basically he's saying "You know who I am and I know who you are. You've already lost this fight, so get lost." "Fly, you fools" He means "Flee, you idiots. Don't just stand there" For context: Elves and Dwarves have a long standing feud. Galadriel (the Elf Queen) is another agent sent by Eru, just like Gandalf. She is the most powerful among all the agents, more powerful than Saruman (the white wizard). When Aragorn swiped that thrown dagger in the air, that's real shit. It's not a stunt. The director was so impressed he had to include it to the film. Fun fact: when Sam was following the boat and starting to drown, the actor actually stepped on some broken glass in the lake. He had to get hospitalised 😂

Quick note: Galadriel is very powerful even according to elves but she is still just an elf. She did once live in the Undying Lands but rebelled and came to Middle Earth. So she was definitely not sent by Eru but is still a force for good.

1. Galadriel was not sent there by Eru (God). She's gotten herself in a mutiny of the Noldors (one of the 3 elven tribes) against Valars (archangelic protectors of the world) in Valinor-elven paradise and she fled to mortal lands of Middle Earth with the Noldors (the leader of the mutiny was her uncle Feanor) and their army and the elves of another tribe (Sindars) who got there earlier made her their queen of Lothlorien. Lothlorien means "the flower of the dream". The other name of the country is Laurelindorenan-"the valley of the singing gold". Tolkien's place names are smt next level :) So when in the movie she talks about passing the test she means that after she refused the power of the Ring she could be freed of her banishment and return to Valinor. 2. "Anor" means just normal Sun. But Gandalf's wizardry is mostly connected to fire element as he is the owner of Narya the Red, the Ring with Ruby one of the 3 elven rings of power. So he can do magic with fire - like fireworks for the hobbits parties. But his ring is also used to inspire others and to ignite courage and great deeds. :) 3. And I guess that "Secret Fire" means the same as "Flame Imperishable" in "The Silmarilion" which was the sole creative power of Eru (God). So when Gandalf talked like this to Balrog the deamon knew what this meant. 4. "Udun" was one of the underground fortresses of Sauron's boss Morgoth - the first satanic adversary, the uber-fallen angel. He got army of Balrogs in his times. That one Balrog was just the last remnant of this army. Can u imagine an army of Balrogs in a movie based on the first age? :)

@@MaliciousMollusc She was very old from 1 age and a Noldor from Valinor too. Actualy her and her husband are the only elves in the movies who could have seen Valinor, the others were born in ME. And in LOTR book it is mentioned that she sort of fights with Sauron's will in order for her to protect her land's borders against his will. That the borderd are closed against him. She mentioned it to Frodo AFAIR. And in the movie Aragorn said to Boromir that "these borders are well protected" though I think that in the movie this was meant only in the sense of military protection. And she got one of 3 elven rings of power Nenya the White which was the Ring of Adamant, and of water's powers. Gandalf got Narya the Red the Ring of fire with Ruby and Elrond got Vilya the Blue the Ring of Air. Using Vilya Elrond could saved Frodo's life and also protect Rivendells secrecy. And Gandalf said to Frodo that the weather in Rivendell is under Elronds rule. Thats why in the book Rivendell's gardens in October looked like in full summer. Saurons powers are IMO the same as his boss Morgoth and as their first teacher Aule the Smith - all 3 come from the area of fires, forges and vulcans but Nenya is the ring of water. Water limits fire. IMO thats why Galadriel in her full power in the scene of Dol Guldur is shown as this watery, soaked greenish person. I guess that the new trilogy showed her as the person capable of singlehandedly deflect Sauron is becouse the LOTR book showed her as capable of protecting the borders of her land with her magic power (similarly to queen Melian protection of Doriath in the 1th age) - and her ring - so I guess that the filmmakers reasoned that she could be shown as deflating power of Sauron and expeling him into a cloud :) But I think that it would be more faithful to the books that Sauron in the Dol Guldur scene was expelled by all 3 of them - Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman or even by some help of Gandalf. I just expected that Sauron in the last movie of the new trilogy will be defeated by mixing the powers of the 3 Rings. And we must remember also that Sauron in the scene of fight of Dol Guldur is not all powerful yet becouse he has not his Ring returned to him, so he is more on the level with other Maiars or even most powerful elves.
