Mystique is one of the few cases where the role genuinely makes sense for the actress to be almost naked throughout the film. Any clothing would interfere with her power. All respect to her for her commitment to the part hours and hours of full body makeup and the courage to be so exposed on screen.

I saw an interview the actress did where she said that the glue they used for the prosthetics would melt just from her body heat, so when she wasn't actively filming they were constantly touching up/re-applying the prostetics that were constantly falling off of her and that she had to sit in a heavily air-conditioned room and simply endure being cold all the time, so there's your weather. She didn't mention legos though ;-) She also said that they gave her lots of wine to help her not feel quite as cold due to the alcohol, so she was usually a bit tipsy when they were filming.

They have so much chemistry, especially in their younger years when portrayed by McAvoy and Fassbender. McAvoy mentioned recently that he agreed with the large number of fans who have felt there is a “vibe” between them, and maybe something even more than friendship going on there. Which I think makes their story even sadder. They had something very real that could never work out because their differences were too great.

Talking about the "worst" mutations, it can definitely get a whole lot worse. In the comics there was a boy whose powers manifested in his sleep, but unfortunately his power was to create a giant radius of extremely lethal radiation at all times that vaporizes organic matter. So the kid killed his family and didn't realize it because they literally disintegrated before he even woke up. Then he went to school and killed everyone outside the school on accident because he still didn't realize that his mutation had manifested. Logan eventually had to be sent to go kill him since he's the only one who can withstand the radiation and the kid couldn't turn it off so he couldn't go to the school and learn to control it even if he wanted to. Super dark stuff, but it shows the realistic side that these mutations can also be a burden and extremely dangerous rather than the "super powers" they are normally portrayed as.

@@jp3813I'm an older fan and X-Men, along with most other major titles from Marvel and DC, have gone Woke. Modern audiences think X-Men was always about Woke issues but even Stan Lee has been on record during interviews that he never intended the title to be about what people today claim it's about. It's pretty clear that a medium has changed from it's orginal intentions when the medium hits rock bottom sales. The major comics companies are having the lowest sales in their history despite the biggest movies of the last decade and half being loosely based on them. Japanese manga and anime outsells American comics in America now because of the difference in quality and storytelling.

@@jessecortez9449 Batman used to have a handgun while Superman initially couldn't fly. Claremont was the true engine behind the X-Men since the 70s, and apparently he's been trying to get rid of the word "Men" in the title for at least 10 years but Disney won't let him. His introduction in 1982's God Loves, Man Kills states that "Mutants in the Marvel Universe have always stood as a metaphor for the underclass, the outsiders; they represent the ultimate minority" regardless of how the series started for those before him. Are you really gonna pretend that most fans didn't like X-Men '97? Funny thing is Stan said in an interview that DC approached him about writing for some of their characters and present them as his own creations, and he turned Batman black and The Flash into a woman.

Apparently, in the original script there was supposed to be a running gag where Toad would keep saying "do you know what happens when a toad" does such and such. So, Storm's joke about a toad getting struck by lightning would've been a response to that. Unfortunately, most of Toad's lines were left on the cutting room floor (probably because Ray Park is primarily a stuntman and not a particularly good actor), but they kept Storm's line for some reason, making the joke make zero sense out of context.

The special thing about this franchise is that it's not about a group of superheroes fighting the bad guys. It's about people with superpowers dealing with the social rejection that comes with being different. While one group is willing to understand and find common ground, the other side sees peace as impossible due to the prejudices they've been victims of and they're betting that everything comes down to the survival of the fittest, and the fittest are the mutants. Magneto is by far my favorite character and throughout this series he grows brilliantly. Ian McKellen is one of the best actors. He's endearing when he's one of the good guys (as we saw with Gandalf) and terribly intimidating as a villain.

Wolverines are incredible, even among the mustelids. As you said, they sometimes bully bears, wolves, and mountain lions as well. @@Etticos. There are political / business / agenda reasons that work to suppress popularity of wolverines. Wolverines require large areas of land to support them. That territory also happens to have valuable raw resources which means a lot of money for businesses (and indirectly paid politicians). Wolverines should have been placed on the endangered list since the 1950's to protect them and their territories. Yet they haven't been placed. Keeping them off that list means a lot of money for a lot of people. Sadly, Money Talks the Loudest. Making wolverines seem as uninteresting as possible to the masses is a part of what helps keep them off that endangered list.

So Magneto is a holocaust survivor, his opinions on being on a list are very important. Charles wants peace between mutants and humans. They have a Malcom X and Martin Luther King opinion on things. One believes in violence and the other doesn’t. Watch the X-Men 1990s cartoon to have some big boy questions from the opening scene.
@tonyclements1147
@tonyclements1147 4 ай бұрын
Stan Lee, the co-creator of Marvel's Uncanny X-Men, didn't base the creation of Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto on Martin Luther King Jr. “[I] did not think of Magneto as a bad guy. He was just trying to strike back at the people who were so bigoted and racist. He was trying to defend mutants, and because society was not treating them fairly, he decided to teach society a lesson. He was a danger of course, but I never thought of him as a villain.” - Stan Lee It was Chris Claremont who rooted Xavier’s dream of humans and the genetically evolved mutants peacefully co-existing in the more iconic dream of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In his introduction to X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills (1982), Claremont details the inspiration for the story. He mentions the cultural shifts taking place in America in the 1980s, and the voices of intolerance that were on the rise, espousing views that-in varying degrees-openly rejected religious, cultural and even racial diversity. The writer says that the story of God Loves, Man Kills was also heavily rooted in two quotes that defined his adolescence. One from MLK, which Claremont says he’d use to describe his approach to the world of the X-Men: “I dream of a world where my children and their grandchildren will be judged, not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” The other, a slightly less well-known quote taken from Ted Kennedy’s eulogy to his slain brother, Robert: “Some dream of things that never were and say, why? I dream of things that are yet to be and say, why not?” Under Claremont the larger notions of X-Men facing “racial destruction” at the hands of a hateful humanity came to dominate the X-Men mythos. This is where we get the classics like “Days of Future Past” where the X-Men face a Holocaust type extinction after a virtual “race war.” It’s where the Sentinels turn into a literal mix of the Gestapo and Slave Catchers, and a lot of the X-Men’s deeper political aspirations become grounded. Dr. Mikhail Lyubanksy argues near the same, stating that while such analogies are “provacative,” they are “entirely inaccurate.” Lyubanksy states that the real Dr. King never served to “shield whites” from blacks, the way Xavier works to shield humans from mutants. Further, Lyubanksy asserts that to correlate Malcolm X with Magneto is to equate the latter’s “fanatacism and terrorism” with a much more “multilayered” historical figure, which only “serves to reinforce many White fears and stereotypes about African Americans in general and Black Muslims in particular.”

@@tonyclements1147 the thing is that Stan was an absolute member of the zeitgeist and even if he meant to or not, he was explaining colored and queer experiences in a militarist or peaceful means. Jack Kirby and Stanley Lieber and a bunch of other writers and artists were always on the same page of: fuck the man. We need to talk about the larger social issues. Quoting an old, inaccurate interpretation of what the entire ideology and cultural impact of the works of these artist is dishonest and absurd. Open your eyes and… wake up.
@tonyclements1147
@tonyclements1147 4 ай бұрын
@@DannyBedo I clarify the position on this point, and all you have is “wake up”. How about you actually research it yourself? You’re gonna find the same info I did. According to Phenderson Djéli Klark, an Afro-American science fiction writer, the shift of the X-Men towards their similarity with the characters of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King came through the writer Chris Claremont, who took over the editing of the comic in 1975. Len Wein, a famous comic book editor, initiated the change in the X-Men by introducing more diversity among the characters in Giant-Size X-Men #1. Wein apparently invited Claremont to take charge of a chapter titled Uncanny X-Men, which was part of issue #94 of the X-Men comic series. Claremont continued publishing and writing stories about the new mutant men for seventeen years. Claremont, who grew up in the 1950s, couldn’t help but be influenced by the Black Power movement and the civil rights movement of African Americans in the U.S., which occurred during his youth. These two movements left such an impact on him that he eventually reflected them in his comics, and that’s when the clear resemblance between the X-Men and Malcolm X and Martin Luther King can be seen. Phenderson also explains that Claremont made the theme of the X-Men constantly facing racial destruction at the hands of humanity that hated them a recurring element throughout the series. “The X-Men are collectively hated, feared, and despised by humanity solely because they are mutants,” Claremont once said. We can see Claremont’s magic wand in action in various chapters of The X-Men, including one that addresses Genosha, a society located in South Africa during apartheid where mutants were enslaved and lived as oppressed citizens. In the end, the inhabitants of that city are exterminated in a massive genocide. In the classic “God Loves, Man Kills,” the story literally begins with the lynching of two black mutant children by a group called the Purifiers, forged in the ideology of white supremacy (they had a Celtic cross as their emblem). It is in this chapter that we see more similarities between Magneto and Malcolm X. This “racial symbolism” marked what was considered the golden age in X-Men publications, inspiring other writers, designers, and readers to this day. “Professor X and Magneto are, in fact, flawed and inaccurate versions of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, but at the same time, they are true portraits of how American society viewed these two great legends,” Phenderson pointed out again in his article “On Malcolm, Martin, and that X-Men analogy thing.”

Hey Ash and Hannah, glad you got to watch the X-Men and looking forward to seeing you follow up with X2. Some insider baseball: -Sirs Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan, both Shakespearean actors in the biggest franchises of the late 1990s to early 2000s -Rogue is the daughter of Mystique and in the comics was coerced into stealing Carol Danvers' powers and landed her in a coma (could be used to give Brie Larson the exit from the MCU if the X-Men are reintroduced) -Jean Grey's telepathy was not as strong as Charles Xavier's but she more than makes it up in telepathy -Sabretooth is a mainstay enemy of Wolverine's with similar healing factor but for some reason, the people at Fox kept Sabretooth and Victor Creed as two separate individuals when they're one and the same in the comics -Hugh Jackman, being 6'2", is taller than comic book Wolverine who is 5'3" -Mystique was portrayed by Rebecca Romijn in X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand and cameoed in X-Men: First Class. Jennifer Lawrence (the first female action star according to her) took over the role in First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix -Toad is played by Ray Park, well known for playing Darth Maul -The Cyclops-Jean Grey-Wolverine triangle was a thing in the comics -Despite the main setting of the movie being in Westchester and New York City, X-Men was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada -The cop who found Mystique's body (shapeshifted into an injured cop) is David Hayter (main screenwriter of X-Men and voice of Solid Snake/Big Boss) -Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan worked on X-Men as an assistant fight director and translator for Corey Yuen (fight director) -The Fox Marvel movies were not part of the MCU as Marvel sold film licenses to other movie studios

The X-Men films are not the most comic-accurate adaptation, largely because it was released during a time when big studios were unsure whether mainstream audiences would take comic book films seriously if they leaned too heavily into "comic book-y" elements. There was a hesitation to embrace comic-accurate costumes, more fantastical storylines, and the colourful, larger-than-life aesthetic associated with the source material. The director of X-Men even went so far as to ban comic books from being brought onto set, which led to Kevin Feige, now President of Marvel Studios smuggling comics in for the actors. Feige was a strong advocate for comic accuracy, pushing for things like more faithful costumes, though at the time, his suggestions were largely ignored. He also provided actors, like Hugh Jackman, with insights and tips on how to embody their characters more closely to their comic counterparts. As a result, X-Men was reworked to appeal to modern audiences of the early 2000s, keeping some core aspects of the comics that were essential, while reimagining or downplaying what the filmmakers thought wouldn’t resonate. This is why the X-Men wear matching black leather uniforms in the film, a sharp contrast to the individual, colourful costumes from both the comics and the X-Men Animated Series. The look was also heavily inspired by The Matrix (1999), which had just come out a year before and influenced many action films in its wake. Characters like Rogue underwent significant changes. She was made into a young teenager, and her powers were "nerfed" compared to her comic book counterpart. In the comics, Rogue is more experienced and wields far more powerful abilities. Similarly, Bobby Drake, better known as Iceman, is portrayed as a teenager in the film, while in the comics, he's one of the original X-Men alongside Jean Grey, Cyclops, and others. These changes become even more noticeable as the series progresses, and further liberties are taken with the characters and storylines. One thing you'll notice right away with these films is how front and center Wolverine is as a character. It’s very much Wolverine & The X-Men rather than an ensemble piece. Wolverine, alongside Charles Xavier and Erik (Magneto), gets most of the focus, while other characters are often pushed to the side, lacking the development they deserve. Characters like Storm, Rogue, and especially Cyclops don’t get the spotlight they need, which frustrated fans of the comics and animated series. Recently, X-Men '97 (2024) made viewers who had only seen the films fall in love with characters like Storm and Rogue, and, most importantly, gave Cyclops the respect he deserves as the leader of the X-Men. That said, I think you’ll enjoy these films regardless, especially without the bias that comic and animation fans often bring when it comes to how certain characters or storylines were adapted. While those fans had issues with character depictions and plots that may have missed the mark, going in with fresh eyes can still make for an enjoyable experience.

The Deadpool films though are a differant story. Releasing during the height of the MCU they fully embraced the comic book-y" elements and by far throughout the three films have the best costumes out of any X-Men film. So it's a wild context going from the Deadpool movies to the 2000s X-Men films.

In X-Men 2, you get a couple of scenes of the actress without the Mystique makeup, which is one of a whole range of wonderful touches to X2 - something to look forward to. These days, Rebecca Romijn plays Una / Number One, the dark-haired First Officer on the Enterprise, in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.' Ms. Romijn also has a brief scene (as herself) in the second Austin Powers film (which came out during the same period as the first X-Men trilogy.) Both want what's best for their people, but both have two different views on how to accomplish that. One uses hope, while the other uses hatred. But although they're "Enemies" they have a mutual respect for one another. I just love that! X-Men was created during the Civil rights era. Mutants are looked at as dangerous 2nd class citizens.

Except they’re not, Claremont was the one that did that with his run. What seems agreed upon by many is that the full tilt towards the X-Men’s Martin & Malcolm persona came under writer Chris Claremont, who took over the return of the comic in 1975. The original ran from 1963-1970 and was virtually resurrected by writer Len Wein in May 1975, who introduced a more diverse team in Giant Sized X-Men #1. Wein invited the young Claremont to take over Uncanny X-Men that August in Issue #94. Claremont would continue at the X-Men’s helm for seventeen years, turning it from a barely read comic into one of Marvel’s most popular franchises. Claremont (born in 1950) was one of those young X-Men fans who came of age in the Civil Rights and later Black Power Era. The racial inscriptions in his writings seem hard to miss, and it’s during this time that the Malcolm and Martin analogy became popular to readers of his work. Under Claremont the larger notions of X-Men facing “racial destruction” at the hands of a hateful humanity came to dominate the X-Men mythos.
