Great reaction! I will say, as well-intentioned as Teddy might've been on some level, he WAS also turning Leonard into a mass-murderer (even if Leonard didn't realize it most of the time). Teddy was using Lenny as his own personal hitman to take people out - and was manipulating Lenny's rage and grief over his dead wife to compel him to kill again and again. So Lenny kinda did have a decent reason to want Teddy dead, beyond just not wanting to face reality.

Yeah, I knew Teddy wasn't a great guy on my first watch, but I definitely didn't realise the extent of what he was doing at that point 😅 I've watch it again since this watch but I still think I'll be catching stuff in my future watches. Thanks for watching along with me! 👊

I think a big part of his decision to kill Teddy was because Teddy was the only person who knew what Leonard had actually done. He was the only person who could tell Leonard those truths about himself, and he wanted them buried forever.

Yes, Teddy was using Leonard to kill drug dealers, but he legitimately wanted to help him too. Leonard was going to hunt down a John G no matter Teddy did, so at least Teddy made sure that the John G's he killed were criminals.

There are so many things to pick up on in this movie but the one that really got me is right at the end when he gets in the car. When he goes to write down the tattoo he immediately writes fact 6, there’s no way he could’ve remembered he was on number 6 at that point unless he’s not fully telling the truth about his condition. Great movie. Still have so many questions

whenever you wanna find out what REALLY happened, you have to watch the scenes in chronological order. To do that, watch all the black & white scenes from the beginning of the movie to the end, then watch all the color ones from the end to the beginning. That will be the story in chronoligacl order.

Whenever people ask me for movie recommendations I *always* suggest Memento first. I don't give away any details about the story but I explain the structure of the film because that's more important. The first scene is the end of the story and the second scene is the beginning of the story. The film zigzags back and forth between the monochromatic first half and the colored second half with the monochromatic scenes going forward and the colored scenes going backward until the end of the film, which is the middle of the story, where the last monochromatic scene becomes the first colored scene. That explanation alone is enough to get people intrigued, confused and excited about Memento. I love watching KZbin reactions to Memento because they are how I imagine my friends and coworkers seeing it!

The entire film Teddy is trying to get the Jaguar away from Leonard. He offers to take it to get the window fixed, he asks to drive it, he ask Leonard for the keys, etc. At the end of the film you realize that he wants to get the car away from Leonard because he wants the $200,000 in the trunk (which Leonard has no idea is there).

Having seen the movie a couple of times, my sense is that Leonard's memory resets the moment his mind fully wanders. If he can hold the thought in his head for long enough the he could keep it long enough to accomplish a task. But the moment he stops thinking about something, even for a second, it disappears.

I would also say that the end of the movie makes Natalie a more complex character. Natalie seems like she's awful to Leonard, but in the end you learn that Leonard murdered Natalie's boyfriend, and left her at the mercy of Jimmy's associates. She does manipulate him to get what she wants, but what she wants is to be free of the problems that Leonard created for her, so I think that moves her into more of a gray area. I think ultimately Leonard correctly identifies that she helps him out of pity -- she hates him for killing Jimmy, but understands his condition is real and ultimately buys his story about getting justice for his wife's murder.

"If he can hold the thought in his head for long enough the he could keep it long enough to accomplish a task." This isn't true because you see Leonard after Natalie tricks him into hitting her - he's trying to remember what she did, but like everything else, it fades.

@@jhornacek I mean, what I said and what you said aren't mutually exclusive. I think it's literally as simple as the *moment* Leonard lets go of a thought, even for a second, it disappears. So in the scene where Natalie has goaded him into hitting her, the way Nolan stages it, it's like the slamming of the car door is the moment that, just for a spilt second, out of reflex, Leonard stops thinking "I hit Natalie" and thinks "what was that?" and the first thought disappears. He really has to *stay focused.*

My girl and I talked for a LONG time after watching this and we both just loved it. We figured with all the crazy anime, books and foreign films we watch this wouldn't live up to the hype we had heard but holy hells did it ever. Great stuff. I'm not sure if this is true but I've heard the blu-ray has it so you can watch it in proper order? After seeing it many times I probably would, but I'd never want a first time watcher to see it that way, you miss out on the joy of the WTH? of it. 🍻🍻

I know this is a bit late, but you mentioned wanting to see this in order. I don’t know if you’ve been told, but there’s an Easter egg on the special edition where you can. There’s a screen with drawings of someone changing a tire. If you put the pictures in backwards order, the movie will play in chronological order. I’ve watched it several times both ways.

I think a big part of his decision to kill Teddy, was to bury the only person who knew the truth about Leonard. This movie is basically about an escaped mental patient from the POV of the metal patient. By the time we learn the truth the audience relates to Leonard so they don’t want to believe Teddy. But he was telling the truth.

This film is brilliant. I am so glad you saw this! There is an interview of Chris Nolan about creating this film, I watched some months ago. I don't remember (lol) what the title of the documentary, but it shouldn't be hard to find, I imagine, and I highly recommend watching it.

This was Nolan's first major movie, and with one like this, it's why so many expect so much out of every movie he does. His fascination with time obviously shows up here, and has carried through all the way to Tenet, which is almost like Memento and Inception put together. I enjoyed your reaction video, and your observations! I'll have to watch some more of yours.

This is the movie I think of first when I think of Christopher Nolan! It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I can say that my reaction was similar to yours, except I think most people knew going in that it was told backwards . That was in all the articles, reviews and marketing, it was the "hook" that got me into the theatre. Good to see it still holds up!

An early Nolan film that most gloss over. Glad you watched it and enjoyed it. Definitely worth a second or third watch. Lol. And yeah, 24:21 gave me so many questions my first watch and then the reveal was indeed mind blowing. Helps explain “The Prestige” a bit too. But yeah, for having such a short career as of yet, Nolan is steadily creeping in on my top five best writers/directors. I mean everything he has made is good. Seriously. Also, this was right before Guy Pearce was in one of my favorite film adaptations of “The Count of Monte Cristo” with Jim Caviezel. If you haven’t seen that one yet, put it on your list.

I watched it. Watched it again. I watched the other movie I'd bought. It was a Tarantino - either True Romance or Pulp Fiction, I forget which as sort of a palate cleanser.. (Hah! An inadvertent meata joke!) Watched it a third time. Each time blew me away. Have been a Nolan fan boi ever since. Guy Pierce, too. He killed so hard. Nolan always plays with time. Even in Batman movies. Interstellar is a classic example. I love so many individual bits of the movie, but I cannot love the whole. I like it a lot. The young woman who played young Murph blew me away. So was so great she made Jessica Chastain and all time great Ellen Burstyn look comparatively pedestrian in contrast. Mini Murph rocked so hard! I love scenes from Interstellar. Almost all of them, actually. But, as a whole it doesn't cohere correctly. There's a bit too much deus ex machina at the end. Some wonky sci-fi hand waving about how black holes work. Tenet, had I been able to actually hear the dialog, might have been good. I'm not sure. The sound design buried it. Extremely well shot; no idea what happened or why. BTW, Insomnia is very under-rated.

This was great! Would definitely recommend The Prestige (2006), also a Christopher Nolan mindfuck movie with tons of twists and that requires multiple watches (also my alltime favorite movie)

Actually, I think you may have it backwards. One of the things I love and appreciate about this film so much is that while we as the audience are watching the action unfold backwards, the writing itself is actually very linear. If you think about it from the perspective of the what, when, and how of the information Chris Nolan is presenting to us, as the audience, it's extremely well structured, and actually quite traditional from a story point of view. It's just because he's delivering it to us alternatively than we'd be accustomed to, that it feels non linear form our point of view, but that's the misinterpretation of our perspective. He's deliberately using our own preconceptions and expectations as a tool for effect. The story itself is actually quite straight forward. It's beautiful filmmaking. He's using us as unknowing participants in the story telling process, as opposed to passive voyeurs. Brilliant!

Apparently there's a linear version knocking about. It won't be nearly as good as the original cut as that's what makes this film special, but I'd still like to check it out to see what I catch.

@@richiecabral3602 Cronological cut is good after watching the original cut and getting as much out of it as you can, as a way to make things more clear if you can't quite understand everything. It's definitely not a replacement for the original though.

When I got to the end I was so annoyed I didn't catch it because it's so obvious he's Sammy. What are the chances that he would research a guy with a rare form of amnesia and then get the same rare form of amnesia? It's absurd. But they did such a great job of throwing so many questions at you youngest focus on the little details.

When I was editing this down I could see myself trying to work something out but then something else would grab my focus. That combined with the time aspect, it really doesn't leave you much breathing room to think it through on a first time watch. That's my excuse anyway haha

You don't know how long ago it was that he met Sammy, so it could've been years ago (Leonard has a different hairstyle). And as an insurance investigator he would meet lots of people with various injuries making insurance claims, so him investigating someone with this type of injury and then him receiving the same injury is a coincidence but not that far fetched.

Only the UK version. The limited edition DVD allows you to see the film in chronological order (after choosing certain words, objects, and multiple choice answers on the psychological tests on the DVD menu.

I fully acknowledge that by now Chris Nolan has earned the right to have outrageous budgets for his movies but quite often I find myself wishing he'd go back and give us a smaller, more intimate and focused movie like this. There isn't an ounce of fat in this film.

Natalie starts as a sympathetic character, then we hate her when we see how she manipulates Leonard. But lets look at the events from her point of view. Her boyfriend Jimmy goes to meet someone named Teddy for a drug deal. Jimmy disappears, and some guy shows up at Natalie's bar wearing Jimmy's clothes and driving Jimmy's car - he even has a coaster in his pocket with a "COME SEE ME - NATALIE" message that she wrote to Jimmy on it. She realizes that Leonard and Teddy killed Jimmy, so she tries to trick Leonard into killing Teddy, getting revenge for her murdered boyfriend.

The degree to which Teddy was actually manipulating Leonard (or whether he was acting out of some twisted form of 'friendship') is ambiguous. - Teddy points out that a large section of Leonard's police file is missing and that Leonard did that himself but there's no way to know whether or not Teddy was responsible for it, either. - If Leonard really has been killing John Gs for so long, he probably should have police and investigators all over him by now. The fact that Leonard never sees any other cops except Teddy seems to indicate that Teddy is covering for him but whether he's doing that out of kindness to Leonard or to protect himself is unclear. - There's no indication that Teddy had set any other murders for profit apart from the one involving Jimmy but it's also entirely possible that sending Leonard to kill drug dealers then steal their money afterward is business as usual for Teddy. It's impossible to know either way. Also, I think the ending is open to interpretation - in the final scene where he's headed to the tattoo shop, there's a quick flash where we see Leonard lying on a bed with his wife and a new tattoo that reads "I did it". It could mean that he's finally going to get some form of closure for the last however many years of searching/killing, or it could just as easily mean that Leonard is simply free to continue killing random John Gs forever, only without the boundaries set by Teddy. It's entirely up to you to decide.

The cops aren't after Leonard for all of the John G's he's killed because he's basically a serial killer with no pattern. His crimes have no motives that the police can determine. There is no reason for the police to suspect Leonard.

@@RyanCarrington Did you ever see Stanley Kubrick’s “The Killing”? One of his very early ones. He aggressively played with fractured time in that fifty years before “Memento.” It’s fun! Word is Kubrick always intended to make the movie that way, scripted and shot it with that in mind, but his producers got cold feet during post production and prevailed on him to at least try and structure the movie chronologically as an “experiment.” The story goes that Kubrick did as he was asked, decided he was right the first time, and reverted to his preferred way of doing it. Somehow Kubrick won that fight - any time a producer or exec asks for something ‘just as an experiment’ it tends to be a hill that they’re gonna die on, or at least make sure everyone else dies on.

Teddy is the most heroic character in the film. He's the only cop that believed Leonard's story about the incident, and he helped him find the original John G. But when Leonard didn't remember that, he helped Leonard by assisting with his investigations to find "John G", and he made sure that the John G's Leonard found were criminals so he wasn't accidentally killing random law-abiding citizens.

@@Samhain606 oh yeah, definitely got a few family members who wouldn't get on with this movie for the same reason. I'm the opposite though, I like a movie that almost reboots my brain haha 😂
