No one will ever do this song like Bobby Hatfield. His voice was from the heavens. Artists before and after him did this song but could never come close to his perfect live performance (just his beautiful voice and a small microphone) no do overs this was live Bobby is half of the Righteous Bros the other half was Bill Melody. BOBBY had the tenor voice and Bill Melody was the baritone. THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE BLENDED TOGETHER BUT THEY DID AND IT WAS PURE MAGIC.

My goodness the violins are just killing it in one of the most beloved, and listen to songs in history. With the beautiful tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers.' singing this song like no one has ever done. Makes this performance done 'Live' back in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show. One of the greatest and epic performance in live television history. Love your reaction to Bobby's voice, and his incredible vocal range.

I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

This song takes on more meaning when understood in context...the song comes from a prison movie about a man doing time and singing to his love from prison...In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film (released in 1955).... North then asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics, but Zaret initially declined, saying he was too busy painting his house. North was able to convince him to take the job, and together they wrote "Unchained Melody."...and the rest is history...maybe the most beautifully written romantic song of all time...and as I understand Zaret did eventually get his house painted.

I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Uniform.

He was still sick and feverish that night, and nervous, because his mother was in the front row and had never heard him sing live before. I was watching on television that night, because my parents loved the Andy Williams Show. Some wag remarked that this song was responsible for 10 percent of the world's population! It was the theme song for a 1955 movie called "Unchained." Bobby took that song away from everyone who sang it before or since.

Righteous brothers best version ever. I’m going to let you know who performed the best solo version of this song and the most underrated vocalist ever recorded. He was Elvis Presley’s favorite ballad singer -superior to Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis , Tony Bennet.. and when you privately or publicly react to “ Unchained Melody” , I’m going to offer you 2 songs that will blow your mind. The first is “ once upon a time” and his 4 octave range reaches the celestial angelic realm. And then “ Granada” the best American rendition ever recorded in the history of recordings. He scales the heights and sustains notes seemingly forever. If you are a professional coach or vocalist please don’t miss these recordings!! You’ll thank me. -Al in isolation from Miami Beach, Florida”

Always surprises me when someone's very first reaction to the Righteous Brothers is a solo rather than choosing to hear both "brothers" first. To me, you need to hear the harmonies of both "brothers" (they weren't related) and then move on to some of their solos; they typically did one solo each per album. Try You've Lost That Loving Feeling, which was the most played song on American radio and television in the 20th century. Here is the link if you want to react to the Righteous Brothers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4DRioxvgtxlfMk
