FYI...all those little Idiosyncratic moments of dialogue where Ed Burns tells about the lady with the big boobs and Matt Damon tells the story of the barn almost burning down. “how accurate” the opening D Day scene is can be summed up to every ww2 veteran walking out of the theatre because it induced ptsd panic attacks, and the opening 20-30 min sequence being considered the most accurate war recreation in movie history
@MFBloosh2 ай бұрын
It's so accurate that literally the only inaccurate things in that scene are nitpicky. For example, the barricades are places the wrong way around. Another one is that the German's are holding the trigger down on their MGs instead of tapping it. Holding the trigger down and firing all those rounds at once would make the barrel melt in real life. Other than that, everything is perfectly done in that scene.
@janescribner82582 ай бұрын
D-Day veterans remarked that the only thing that was missing was the smell. Horrifying.
@DuxtheWanderer2 ай бұрын
To add on to this, the version of this scene isn't even the original version. The original version that was screen played for testing to veterans was much more grotesque. gory, terrifying, etc. The veterans said they didn't want the public and their families to see how bad it was. It was this original version that elicited such a visceral response from veterans. The version we see in the film is toned down and even that version is in a league of its own in terms of war scenes.
@Gunnar0012 ай бұрын
@@MFBloosh No. This scene has SEVERAL historical inaccuracies according to real footage, testimonies, military after action reports and aerial photos of the landing zones that were taken during that time. For example, those big, ridiculously obvious machine gun bunkers that we see shooting straight into the landing U.S. troops in the film didn’t even exist. In reality, most of the German MGs in that sector were in small camouflaged positions dug into the bluffs, firing at interlocking angles along the length of the beach. The first landing troops didn’t know exactly where the fire was coming from because of this and would have been taking hits from the sides, not the direct front. Also, the first waves of troops landed at low tide and had to cross hundreds of meters of water and open beach before even reaching the “safety” of the shingle, unlike the far too small stretch of beach in the film that was way too close to the enemy positions. It took hours, spread across miles of beach, for these dispersed groups of men to get a foothold and secure Omaha. It definitely wasn't some quick 20 minute massed assault. So, while it this scene may have been realistic in terms of the intense violence and the “feeling” of battle, it was far from accurate in terms of what actually happened that day.

While not a true story it was inspired by the story of the Sullivan Brothers, which is mentioned in the movie. They were 5 brothers on the same Navy ship that was attacked during the battle of Guadalcanal. None of them survived and the mother found out she had lost all her sons.
@dt_tby2 ай бұрын
Close but a little off. Actually based very closely on the Neyland brothers. 3 brothers all "killed" in a short period and the only survivor was Fritz Neyland in the 101st (I believe he was the youngest as well just like in SPR). He was in E Co, 506th, 101st, the same company as BoB depicts. But no rescue mission was necessary, they were able to get word to the Company leadership and he was evacuated by a Chaplain and taken back to friendly lines without issue. The brother that was presumed killed in Burma was a pilot who had gone missing on a mission and later turned up alive and was sent home. So 2/4 brothers actually survived in the real life story that inspired SPR. The Neyland brothers story was depicted in the BoB book by Stephen Ambrose if memory serves. Tom Hanks read the book and thought the story would make a great movie with a few tweaks.

sorry to say this, but this is by far the worst reaction video to this movie I've seen and I've seen quite a few. Every single scene from the D-Day landing, where there was usually always the best reactions, is cut out and after the commercial break in the middle of the d-day scene it was over for me, couldn't watch the rest. Downvotes absolutely justified.

I'm sorry, but I had to immediately stop watching when an ad was shoved into the middle of the d-day scene. I don't think I've seen a worse placement of an ad in any video, ever. I'm not going to give you some sort of high horse lecture, but I think you should think more about placement, especially when it's surrounding content that many people consider "sacred ground".

That ad placement was straight trash, Ang, I'm sorry. Going from watching soldiers being slaughtered, then cutting away to what, at first, would appear to be some sort of heartfelt retrospective context and saying how fortunate you are to never have to live through such an event.... except you were just doing a segway into an ad for scentbird. That's pretty classless. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these MAGA nationalists that thinks vets should be worshipped (I am a vet) and thinks America is the greatest, but that just felt scummy, even to me. Be better than that, Ang.

You are correct that they refer to the Sullivans in the film, but minor correct...all 5 Sullivan Brothers were killed when their cruiser the USS Juneau went down. The story is really based on the 4 Niland Brothers...3 of which were thought to have been killed, but it turned out one of the 3 killed had just been taken prisoner.

The actor at 20:00 that describes the overloaded plane crashing is Leland Orser. He's one of those actors that is in so many great films and always as a small character. Hi Ange. I just wanted to say thank you for taking the opportunity to watch this movie. My grandfather served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, so films like this always have a special place in my heart. The beginning of this movie takes place at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. I had the honor of visiting that site and plant American flags. To see the graves of all those men who died at Normandy under the white crosses and stars of David, it’s hard not to get choked up. I even had the opportunity to walk across Omaha Beach where this battle took place in real-life. You could still see all the shell holes from artillery and bombs. There are even some German bunkers left behind from the war that you could go into. Saving Private Ryan is widely regarded as the greatest is war movie ever made, if not one of the greatest films. It would go on to influence so many other films that followed, including video games like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty. Steven Spielberg made this as an ode to his father who also fought in World War II. It won five Academy Awards for best director, best cinematography, best film editing, best sound, and best sound effects editing. It was also nominated for best film and best actor (Tom Hanks). It should have won those awards too in my opinion. Tom Hanks is portraying a Captain in the U.S. Army Rangers. These are elite infantry units who are often assigned the most difficult and dangerous missions. Before the Invasion of Normandy, U.S. Army Ranger Battalions had already seen heavy combat in North Africa and Italy during World War II. This explains why Sergeant Horvath (Tom Sizemore) was collecting soil from France, as you can see he had already collected soil from the other countries they had fought in. The opening of this movie depicting the Battle of Omaha Beach is famous for its intensity and realism. Many World War II veterans who fought there on D-Day had a difficult time watching this in the theaters given the memories of such a horrific experience. I remember one veteran said that what happened at Omaha was worst than what this movie depicted. The story of Saving Private Ryan is loosely inspired by the Niland brothers from Tonawanda, New York. Frederick William "Fritz" Niland served in H Company, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during the Invasion of Normandy. Two of his brothers, Robert and Preston, were killed in action while fighting in Normandy with other units. His fourth brother, Edward, was believed to have been killed in the Pacific, but it turns out he was captured by the Japanese and spent a year in a POW Camp in Burma. Thankfully Frederick and Edward survived the war. There is also some inspiration from the Sullivan brothers. They were five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa who served together as sailors aboard the light Cruiser USS Juneau. They were all killed in action on November 13, 1942, when the Juneau was sunk by Japanese torpedoes during the Guadalcanal Campaign. In the aftermath of their deaths, the U.S. Armed Forces tried to ensure that brothers wouldn’t be allowed to serve together in combat. I’m not sure if you noticed, but the German soldier Corporal Upham shot at the end (38:58) was the same one who killed Wade at the radar site earlier in the film. He’s known as “Steamboat Willie.” He’s also the same soldier who shoots and kills Captain Miller on the bridge a few moments earlier. Since you’ve watched Saving Private Ryan, I sincerely hope you have the opportunity to watch Band of Brothers. I would also strongly recommend Hacksaw Ridge if you decide to watch another war movie in the future.

I was invited with my wife to a charity premiere in the UK where the shot the bridge scene in Hatfield. Tom Hanks’s helmet was auctioned off for £2000. The opening scene was so much longer than the theatrical release. I started watching reaction videos this year. Some have people who think they're comedians and it's obvious that they're not. A total distraction by what I assume are wannabe entertainers. Some are very knowledgeable in the film making process and I appreciate their inputs, observations, and feedback. Some are just honest reactors, and I really enjoy seeing a film I've seen before in the eyes of someone else who is viewing it for the first time. There are even some who are so engaging and fun that it's like watching a movie with a friend. Finally, some just come off as irritating. To me, you fall into the last category. I wanted to continue watching but I just couldn't. Maybe it's me and everyone else loves your reactions. Not intending to be mean but just giving some feedback.
