I watched this movie with my dad when it first came out on DVD and I must have been six years old or so. After that, I just continued watching it several times on my own in high school and in college. @gohan33663 жыл бұрын
The movie has some inspiration and nods to an anime called Captain Tsubasa from the 80s that was super popular around the world. Every few decades or so the anime gets retold, the latest iteration came out in 2018, should give it a watch. Also, much respect in watching in it's original language.

"Shaolin Soccer" was the first Stephen Chow's movie I saw and I loved it so much, watched it for so many times I know it by heart now😄 but strangely this scene 18:33 where she's posing and fighting wasn't in any versions I've watched so far🤔 Oh and thank you for choosing subs over dubs. Haha, I'm glad you gave this one a shot too! I remember watching this back with my whole class back in 2001 when this came out. Our class adviser treated us. He was one of the leaders of our high school soccer varsity team and during that time this movie was the hypest shit in theaters so after watching some students from our class and other sections joined the soccer varsity team. That was the case for other schools too. This movie was just that dope. No one was prepared for how ridiculous it was. It was like a breath of fresh air. So happy you've seen both Stephen Chow's most acclaimed movies. You might want to see Scott Pilgrim as well if you haven't seen that yet. It's directed by Edgar Wright. In some sense it has the same-ish quirky humor and action packed ass kickery as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Cheers my man

Stephen Chow likes to work with a lot of the same actors (Hong Kong camaraderie), and even the character tropes get recycled. Like that woman at 17:44, she's actually a cross-dressing man who often appears in Chow's movies pretending to be ladylike while doing some kind of disgustingly funny thing.

He can really direct comedy and action, but Stephen Chow is really good at writing romance too. I totally buy the love story in both movies. Highly underrated part of both movies. While funny and enjoyable, I think I love Kung Fu Hustle more. Nothing against Shaolin Soccer, but Chow isn't yet at his peak here. I don't have anything critical to say why I feel this way, so this is just my opinion.

Stephen chou have always been know to have a kin of comic/cartoon logic in his movies, even before shaolin soccer or kungfu hustle. What makes his work so great is that he's able to do all the ridiculous special effect, comedy and logic in comic/cartoon/anime and make it work in live action, hes also able to balance the touching and emotional part with comedy so well. I really hope one day he gets to direct an anime adapted movie with the quality of special effect hollywood big budget movie has. I think if there were a OnePunchMan live action movie I really hope they get him to direct, even if they dont get him to direct the entire movie at least have him be a co-director or a consultant. Considering how so many martial artist actors liek jackie chan, jet li and donnie yen is now known in hollywood, its such a shame that prolific directors from hongkong has not really had a break through in adapting their directing style into hollywood movies, not that it became just another hollywood movie, but to begin with I wish at least hey could have a special effectteam that has done big budget hollywood movie. Imagine if Kungfu hustle had better special effects.

Three days in the city we'd moved to and my dad got asked to play a Russian in a mini series they were shooting in the area. She played a secretary. Funny thing is, they didn't bother to tell us the name of the series. We've never seen it. 20 years later and my dad still occasionally gets recognized by Chinese people as the Russian diplomat from that one mini series. If there are any Chinese people reading this, the series is about some diplomatic talks between Russia and China that happened in Yunnan in the 50s or 60s. I don't remember what they said the talks were about or why they were in Yunnan.

Team Evil's players were using PED to battle against the Shaolin Masters. Both teams are powerful, but the Shaolin team will only exhaust themselves by fighting with their own strength. Mui's role was essential to their victory as the theory behind Tai Chi is not reliant on strenghth, but instead to harness the kinetic energy from their attacker & project the force elsewhere. She not only stopped the ball from going into the goal, but she kept that energy going, and enhanced the power; coupled with Sing's Mighty Steel kick, it helped score the winning goal. The Landlord in Kung Fu Hustle was also a Tai Chi master. Also, it's good to know I wasn't the only one hearing an off-brand Lion King soundtrack.

Am like you, I love both films, Kung Fu Hustle and Shoalin Soccer. I also can tell you both eng dubs are shorter than the original subs, the dub doesn't have the blooper reel and some scenes cut out.

Stephen Chow recommendations - god of cookery, tricky master, king of comedy, fist of fury 1 and 2, saint of gamblers 1-3 (spinoff of chow young fat god of gamblers) but his movies based in older eras are the best like king of beggars, justice my foot and royal tramp 1 and 2
