When this came out, Bill Murray said it was the funniest movie he had seen in 10 years. If you really study film, it's amazing how great an homage this entire movie is to classic cinema in both the East and West. It's everything from cartoons to gangster movies, Charlie Chaplin to great Kung Fu and Hollywood musicals. Just a perfect combination of the two film cultures, and an amazing achievement.

Directed... and Produced and Written and acted as the Main character and have his team of actor and actresses friends work for him by the Legendary Stephen Chow. And we have been waiting for Part 2 since 2004. Sadly he doesn't act much anymore. He is extra creative to be able to package so many fun stuff in 1.5hr movie. everything, the scenes, music design, sound effects, pacing, martial art and acting performances, choreographies, is just perfectly fit. Everything comes one full circle in the story, the book he bought, the girl he helped, the butterfly at the start, all meaningful. he is able to make fun in the midst of seriousness and be serious in the midst of humour, now that is very difficult to achieve, but the end result is chef kiss.

Fun Fact: The "Paris & Helen of Troy" reference was not a direct translation. The landlords referred to themselves as "Yang Guo & Xiao Long Nu" a famous couple in Chinese Wuxia folklore called "Return of the Condor Hero". Steven Chow is amazing. I highly recommend Shaolin Soccer next. You will see a lot of familiar faces in that movie. Also, a special appreciation for Yuen Woo Ping (fight choreographer)

I’m just gonna sum up the details of Kung fu for you all in this movie. So this movie, there are 6 levels of Kung fu. Each level representing a state of mind and the body. The first level being the physical level. This level consists of the “twelve leg shao lin kick” “Hong jia fist” and “wu Lang ba gua staff” these are what is called “Ming jin” or “visible strength” This is the usage of the physical strength of the body, it is also the first level of Kung fu. The second level is represented by the two blind man. This is when Kung fu is no longer only represented through the body, but also as a state of “energy” or “an jin” this in English could be described as a strike that cannot be seen. This state of Kung fu is extremely powerful as it can kill without subject even realizing it has been killed. How ever, this is soon to be over shadowed by the third level of Kung fu. “Hua jin” or “mix of the strike” this is when one has mastered the first two levels of Kung fu and is able to combine the two. They are able to dissolve the attacks of the first two levels of Kung fu with ease. This is represented by the “land lord couples.” Through. “Tai chi” and “shi hou gong” or “lion roar”. Though this level of Kung fu is already extremely powerful, the fourth level of Kung fu is even greater. This state of Kung fu is when the user have managed to use the mixture of energy, mastered before from the first, second, and third state and create something even further beyond. There is no name for this state in China, since people like this are generally considered to be one of the greatest masters of it’s time. This state of Kung fu is represented by “huo yun xie shen” or the “world’s top killer”. However, there is still room for even beyond this state. State 5, this is when you break the limit of your body and reach even beyond the roof of Kung fu. This is represented when the main character stepped on the eagle, (the eagle of which represents the pinnacle of Kung fu) Stage five is represented through “Ru lai shen zhang” or “the Buddha palm” (the Kung fu the main character learned as a child.) But what is even further beyond this level is level 6. He didn’t show this in this video but in the movie, after the main character has spared “Huo Yun Xie Shen” he asks the main character what Kung fu he was using. And after hearing this, the main character calmly responds with: “you want to learn this? I can teach you.” This is when he has reached the last stage of Kung fu. Where Kung fu is longer used to just fight, but only to communicate and grow. This is known as “fan pu gui zhen” and in many Chinese sayings “jiu jiu gui yi” (after nine you have one and zero) meaning after you reach the pinnacle you return to where you have started. This is regarded as the true pinnacle state of Kung fu, and only the greatest of masters may dream of mastering it. Since it would mean to leave all of what you had behind and return to where you have started. Truly something not anyone can do. Hopefully that was enough to allow people to understand just how detailed this movie is when it comes to Kung fu. :)

A lot of those guys are kung fu master or actors. The main villain (frog guy) is a famous kung fu actor from 70s and 80s. The landlord guy is also a respected kung fu artist starred in many Jacky Chan and even Bruce Lee flicks. Heck he was the stunt double for Bruce Lee doing a flip in one of the movies (rumoured has it Bruce Lee hurt his back during that time or can't do that scene).

Stephen Chow not only wrote and directed, he was the main star as well. I think this film works because it's such an homage to the past but done in a contemporary and funny way but still makes you feel like a kid again. It has a sense of wonder with it's humor. I absolutely adore this film. It's just so creative, fun, and imaginative. Some of the effects look dated but they're easily overlooked because it just kind of fits the style. Maybe Stephen Chow was smart enough to have thought that out. This film truly is his vision, and what a vision it is. It's still going to be great in 50 years. His prior film to Hustle was Shaolin Soccer. It's a good play on a sports film. It's very fun too.

Fun fact: The landlord and landlady, were the martial art big brother and sister (classmate) of Jacky Chen in real life during their teenage years. The landlady, Yuen Qiu, was in the James Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun. She was one of the school girls who save Bond when escaping from the Karate school. Her husband the landlord was played by Yuen Wah, who was Bruce Lee's stunt double in Enter The Dragon. When you see Bruce doing the acrobatic tumbling and back flip, that was actually Yuen Wah.

And the kick when he fights O'Hara when he does a backflip. In Enter The Dragon....he can be seen during the banquet scene. When Han enters, and he throws the apples for the girls to throw darts at them, he's the SECOND one of the guys who catches an apple!!! He also appeared in THE CHINESE CONNECTION/FIST OF FURY : The Japanese telling Bruce Lee/Chen to "Pretend you're a dog and I'll take you in"

Fucking. Love. This. Film. Stephen Chow also did Shaolin Soccer, which is kinda the same - it was so popular people kept going on at him to make another one, and got him so annoyed with the nonstop requests he deliberately wrote in the part in Hustle where he destroys the soccer ball. I'd stopped watching reaction vids for a little while recently, kinda burned out on them - but I couldn't resist seeing you react to this masterpiece, and watching all of it hit you reminded me why reaction vids are good entertainment. Man I am so glad that you decided to watch this. Stephen Chow is a king when it comes to funny movies. Everybody will mention Shaolin Soccer, but if you ever have the time look up his other flicks. Fun fact, the guy with the bags who was whupping people with kicks was an actual Shaolin monk at one point. His name is Xing Yu I believe. The gay tailor is another real life kung fu master named Chiu Chi Ling. He actually teaches in Cali and in Hong Kong.

This particular movie really hits home, and my heart.. I really appreciate the way you viewed the movie in its true nature, and allowed the actors to be heard in their dialect and read the subtitles rather than translated into English. Alot of great foreign movies are destroyed when someone translates their own monolog. Thanks again, this was my sons favorite movie we watched over and over. Unfortunately I lost him to cancer Dec 2011 @ the age of thirteen. But I sure had a wonderful time watching crazy movies like this one. I will always remember my son, and glad there are movies that will help remind me if the good times.Keep up the awesime work, your channel is growing and you are a truly blessed person.

Stephen Chow isn't just the director, writer, and creative visionary for this movie.. he is also the main protagonist. If you are looking to watch something similar you MUST see 2001's Shaolin Soccer also by Stephen Chow as director, writer, and lead role. It has a lot of the same cast members and just as funny. Similar to this one, the CGI isn't the best but its a movie made almost 2 decades ago. Edit: Great video btw, Kung Fu Hustle is finally getting some recognition by foreign countries around the world and its rare to see a someone talk about how beautifully shot and directed this film is.

I’m really happy that you noticed the filmmaking in this movie. It’s really well made. It reminds me a lot of Mel Brooks before History of the World Part I: a lot of care goes into the look, the tone. and the characters, thus making the comedy a hell of a lot funnier. At 20:51 he says “What are you… prepared… to do?!” But it’s in English. 21:48 is my favorite scene in this movie. It’s so moving.

As a Chinese growing up watching Stephen Chow's comedies, here are the films Chow directed and acted that I recommand besides Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer: The God of Cookery(1996) - Classic Chow's style comedy, lower class, hilarious battle, love and Kung Fu From Beijing with Love(1994) - My personal favorite, Chow's version of James Bond King of Comedy(1999) - Kind of like an autobiography of Chow as a comedian, how he climbed from bottom to top As a one-of-a-kind comedian actor, Chow also delivered many great comedies working with other directors, and here are a few I recommand: God of Gamblers II(1990) Tricky Brains(1991) - Master of pranks Fight Back to School(1991) Sixty Million Dollar Man(1995) Some films like Royal Tramp(1992) and Flirting Scholar(1993) are rewritten from Chinese ancient stories, and also funny as hell.
