@@jgb8038 Do you know that in the James Bond movies, Bond is offered Dom Perignon '55 by Dr No, and says he prefers the '53 himself, which is the year the first Bond book was released. Then that interaction is mirrored in Golden Gun, with Scaramanga offering him a glass of the '64 vintage and he says he prefers the '62 himself, the year of release of the first Bond movie? One of my favourite bits of Bond trivia.

Movie pitch. It starts with Indy's funeral. Shorty attends with his family. In Indy's will, he leaves Shorty a journal detailing everything he knows about treasure lost somewhere in Asia. Shorty, his wife, and his American born daughter go on an adventure to get it back. Must include a car chase with Shorty driving, where he assures his family that he's been doing this since he was twelve.

I would have loved for him to be in DoD...Either showing up to save Indy from certain doom with the mad skillz we now know he has, or even as a bad guy! Basically, we learn that Indy realized he shouldn't be exposing a kid to danger, so he set him up with a family and left...But SR felt abandoned, and followed his path in life, but became more like Belloq, finally confronting Indy in DoD. Of course, they reconcile, he betrays the bad guys he's working for, and is there with Indy at the end, giving him yet another reason to live for! But I like your idea, too...

Has a similar idea. But opens with a man entering a rainy bar on the West Coast, takes off his cap and wipes his glasses on his hanky and asks for the phone. Two cowboys at a table make fun of his English and pick a fight daring them to use “Bruce Lee shit” on them. The man puts his ballcap back on, turns it backwards to reveal a San Francisco Giants SF. Dr. Short Round proceeds to beat the shit out of them just like Indy would’ve. Main plot centers around a group of refugees asking Shorty to retrieve a precious statue from a temple in the Cambodian jungle before the Kmet Rouge get it.

The minecar sequence was a combination of three techniques. First, the full sized minecar was doing circles, with lighting changes to imply changes of location. Second, there were a very few select blue screen shots. Thirdly the wide shots of the minecars were actually miniatures with actuated puppets - done so well I honestly couldn't have told you that unless I researched it, it looked so real. This film won the Best Visual Effects Oscar, of course. Can I just say how refreshing it is to watch a reaction to this film without any bitching about Willie's character. The truth is, unlike Marion in the first film, Willie was supposed to be comic relief. This was an insanely dark film, with child slavery, ripping out of hearts, you name it. Without a comic relief character (which the first film didn't have) the audience may not have been able to cope particularly well. Despite receiving heavy criticism at the time for... well you name it, the Temple of Doom sold more tickets than any film in the franchise bar the first (don't be fooled by inflation people). Unfortunately, in my opinion, the critical response to the film led them to play it safe with the third film. Don't get me wrong, I love the Last Crusade, I just think they could have been more daring with it.

She just might. It was a huge disappointment to ME back in the day. It was basically the exact same movie as the first one, just with Sean Connery as an added bonus. I had expected them to double down on the action and scares once again, like they did with the second one, so instead getting a lamer, tamer repetition was NOT a nice surprise. Still a great movie as action romps go, but it still made this trilogy end on a whimper.

@AMortalDefiant
@AMortalDefiant 4 ай бұрын
@@erikthompson619 I half agree. I think they did tone it down a bit, which doesn't make it have quite as much impact. Some of the music from Temple of Doom legitimately give me full-body goosebumps. The music in the 3rd film, being less intense, is 'merely' excellent. Music has a colossal impact on a scene. The set pieces in ToD are just so over-the-top and exotic. In TLC, they kind of fall-back on the "Indiana Jones and the search for a Christian Relic while fighting Nazis" theme. Part of what made ToD awesome was delving into less familiar settings, characters, etc. I had never heard of the Thugee before that movie, and had assumed George Lucas made it up; but, no, they were a real thing that plagued India for several decades. I think a lot of audiences prefer what is familiar. I prefer what is new, and different to what came before. That being said, TLC is still an amazing movie.

Oh my god, it is so great to see a reactor who doesn't hate Willie. She gets so much hatred, but you totally got what's fun about her character. She is *so* completely out of place, it's hilarious -- but by the end of the movie, she's really grown a lot. She'll never be an adventurer like Marion, but she proves herself. The novelization gives her some more backstory and she's so much cooler than the movie suggests -- she's a farmgirl from the middle of nowhere (Iowa, I think), who came of age in the Great Depression, and was told constantly not to have dreams because she'd never escape the poverty of the dust bowl. Her grandfather was a stage magician, and she learned enough from him to get a job as a magician's assistant, then learned to sing, dance, and eventually that allowed her to travel the world. Sure, she's associating with gangsters and the like, but for a farmgirl who was told she'd never leave Iowa, being the headliner at a club in Shanghai is a dream come true. And that's why Willie is cool -- she's an incredibly competent woman, it's just that "jungle adventure" is not what she's competent at. Also, people forget that this is a prequel and thus we can't be left asking questions like "Why aren't Indy and Willie a couple at the beginning of Raiders?" Obviously they're a poor match and their relationship won't last once she's back in civilization.

That's wild how Willie Scott's life seems to run paralell to the real life Kate Capshaw! Kate lived near St Louis MO, not too far from my old stompin' ground before she made it big, so the line at the end "I'm goin' back to Missouri.." was a nod to her homeland. I've read that Kate did not have the best of times filming Temple of Doom, but hey in the end she did wind up marrying Stephen Speilberg!!! Glad to see someone not completely shart on Willie for a change:)

Also, I want to point out that the reason for so many dark stuff in the movie and possibly Willie being an annoying stereotype was because that George Lucas was going through a divorce from Marcia Lucas (the editor of Taxi Driver and the first Star Wars) and Spielberg was going through a breakup. Spielberg said that it was his least favourite of the Indiana Jones films that he’s worked on and that the only good thing to come out of it for him was that he got to met Kate Capshaw (who played Willie) and later on married her. Thankfully, they’ve remained married since.

That could have an impact, but also keep in mind all three different films are, partially, based in the formula of old pulp radio and movie adventure serials (that covered different genres from detectives, espionage, ganster to horror and sci-fi; horror tales and crime stories could get pretty dark, to the point this pulp stories went on to create a huge backlash and censorship for future media like comics under the idea "they were idolizing crime and satanism among the young"). Pulp stories, while many were serialized and followed a character or a crew, were mostly campy, self contained, and full of different stereotypes; including the almost unescapable "damsel in distress". The trope predates the pulp, but when radio and movies with sound appeared, the damsel in distress got one of its more modern aspects: screaming for (virtually) anything (and then gets captured, or faints, or something happens and she can't do a damn thing). Their personal dissatisfaction with relationships paired with the tropes they were relying on to build the story (even Kate Capshaw asked a couple of times if she wasn't screaming too much, I think) simply were fertile grounds to easily make a character that gets too easily on the nerves of many, because that stereotype is no longer popular in such cartoony limits.

It has its moments XD, just kidding; honestly the films kind of have been reappreciated in recent years. When the second films of all Spielberg's major franchises tied to its name came out, they were not that very well welcomed (to the point it became a steretype to say Spielberg wasn't good with sequels). It's interesting to remember this was the general feeling for Temple of Doom, Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Empire Strikes Back when they came out (and all three, although maybe not so much with Lost World, got a better reputation in recent years). Such is life... sometimes audiences want copies of the same thing over and over.

To answer your question Ange, the language spoken in Shanghai is the Wu Dialect, sometimes called Shanghainese. Which is a dialect of Mandarin as I understand it. The 1930s was part of the later Warlord Period of modern China. So people were still speaking regional dialects, Mandarin as a language wouldn't be standardized by the Chinese Communist Party until 1986. Chances are though, that the actors were probably speaking Mandarin, since if the actors themselves didn't speak it. It was probably more accessible to find a language coach for in Hollywood in the 80s.

The dress Willie wears in the opening dance sequence was an incredibly expensive, one-of-a-kind dress made with actual sequins from the 1930s and was worth a small fortune. Naturally, with it being that valuable, it ended up being badly damaged in a very unexpected way. While filming the scenes of the main characters traveling by elephant, there is a scene in which the dress is hanging on a branch to dry. During the filming of that scene, one of the elephants got ahold of the dress and chewed it up. The filmmakers had to file an insurance claim on the dress, and on the form the cause of damage listed was "eaten by elephant"!

From Star Wars in E.T. to E.T. in one of the Star Wars films, from the Clone Wars to Ready Player One, Spielberg and Lucas have a habit of hiding Easter eggs from each others' films. It is no less ridiculous and less realistic than the raft from the airplane. Snakes do indeed have bones. Just mostly a spinal column and ribs. Though Pythons (Pythonidae) and Boas (Boidae), many species of both groups still have vestigial hips.

A lot of people seem to class this as the worst of the original trilogy, but for me it's easily the best. An absolute rollercoaster from beginning to end...it rarely lets up and is action packed right from the start. Willy's character was seemingly what spoiled it for some but I loved the contrast of her scared of everything 'broke a nail' type vibe in contrast to Indys character and it made for some hilarious moments. I know I'm late on this comment, but there is an amazing behind the scenes documentary on the making of the first 3 Indy films that I highly recommend to anyone who likes these movies. A few things you might have been curious about: - The nightclub they were in at the very beginning is called "Club Obi Wan". - The minecart chase scenes were shot using stop-motion miniatures. - The "crocodiles" at the end were actually alligators, shot in Florida, but should have been crocs because it's supposed to be India. - Ke Huy Quan actually brought his brother to audition for Short Round, but he had such good chemistry with Harrison Ford so they picked him. - This movie was much darker than the other two because Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were going through breakups in their personal life and were in a darker mindset. - The movie was originally rated R, because there was nothing between PG and R ratings; this movie is the reason PG-13 ratings exist, which Spielberg and Lucas fought for. - Spielberg actually ended up marrying Kate Capshaw (Willie)

You're absolutely right. I also always liked this one the best. To the point that the third movie actually disappointed me on its release. I had expected them to take up the scares and action yet another notch, like they did from the first to the second one. Instead, we got basically a clone of the first movie, just with Sean Connery as an added bonus. Still a great movie, of course, but an anticlimax nonetheless.

😄👍 Everybody laughs at that plane crashing into the mountain at 6:27. In the next Indiana Jones film, there's another scene with a plane crashing into the side of a mountain, but the special effect is slightly more convincing in that one.

Good reaction, Angelna. This 2nd Indiana Jones movie is often regarding as the worst one among the original 3 movies....but I actually still like it. Btw, I'm sure that other commenters already mentioned it...but just in case no one did, the blonde actress (Kate Capshaw) who plays his love interest in this movie is actually Steven Speilberg's wife. They have been married for over 30 years.

A bit of an issue with Short Round's backstory - The Japanese Bombing of Shanghai was in 1937....2 years AFTER when this film is set :) Given the line about Short Round living on the streets since he was four it lines up with The White Terror in 1927 but that was Chinese vs Chinese.

As far as snakes go....that was a Python, which are not venomous, and they generally don't bite unless they feel threatened or are protecting a clutch of eggs. Pythons prefer to wrap around their prey using their muscular length to either crush or choke out their target.

Glad you had an easy time with the wisdom teeth. That little operation didn't bother me either. I was back to work the next day lol. Although, this isn't the best Raiders movie, I enjoyed the ending the most. Seeing the children reunited with their parents is tear jerking and heart warming. And a small detail, those weren't crocodiles in the river ecen though they were supposed to be. They actually used alligators for the movie.

1. Some folks don't care for this one very much, but I do. It's all kinds of fun. 2. Just a small suspension of belief regarding the lifeboat drop out of the plane, and the coal car landing perfectly on the tracks. 3. IRL Ford could fly that plane. 4. When I was in the US Navy, I got to eat monkey (but not monkey brains) and tasted dog in the Philippines. 5 Shortround is "Billy Badass"🤬🤩 6. Disneyland already has a "Raiders of the lost ark" so another one of the ride through the tunnel/mine would be cool too. Assuming you can afford it.🙄😏 7. Kate Capshaw got the Willie gig because she was dating and later became Spielberg's wife. 8. Fun act: The guy that plays the guy getting crushed is the same actor that played the guy that got hit with the propellor in "Raiders of the lost ark". 9. Coolest villain ever.👹

Finally someone who gets the point of Willie. She is meant to be different from Marion, and since this is a prequel to Raiders we're not supposed to think that Indiana and Willie would work out in the long run. I really appreciate Willie and Kate Capshaw's performance here, a lot of it is really fun.

Something interesting casting wise. The big actor with the red beard and turban who fights with Indy and gets caught and run over by the large wheel is the same one from the 1st movie that plays the big bald nazi who fights Indy and is chopped by the propeller of the plane.

Thank you for liking Willie! A lot of people don't get her. She's comic relief. They wanted a different love interest in each film, like Bond, so WIllie was a blonde where Marion was a brunette. Marion was a tough as nails woman that could take care of herself, so Willie was an "indoor girl" that wouldn't go on an Indy adventure unless she was forced. She does have a character arc and even punched out a Thugee near the end. But most can't get past her screaming. Sorry, but most of us would ALSO be screaming in her shoes. She's great and a fun comedic foil to Indy and Short Round.

The one Indiana Jones movie that dips most into horror, a brand new rating (PG-13) was largely created BECAUSE of this. Even if Spielberg himself thought the film was too dark (made during a turbulent time in his life), it pushed filmmaking forward and created a cult classic regardless! 😎

Okay...lucky girl with the wisdom teeth. I had all four of mine out when I was 17 (in 1989), back when they gave you REALLY powerful drugs for the pain. I had one day of intense pain, and by the fifth day, the pain was gone, but I was still a bit tender for another day or two. The first two or three days were the hardest to deal with. - This movie was how Steven Spielberg met his second wife...Kate Capshaw, who plays Willie Scott. They didn't get together for a few years, but they became friends during the filming. So, when Ke Huy Quan received his Oscar, the main cast of Temple of Doom were all on hand at the ceremony...Harrison and Kate, and Steven Spielberg...and all of them were thrilled for Ke. - The man who puts Indy, Willie, and Short Round on the plane is Dan Ackroyd (Ghostbusters) Spielberg directed Ackroyd in the WWII comedy 1941, and Spielberg also made an on-camera cameo in Dan Ackroyd's hit film, The Blues Brothers. - The villain Mola Ram is played by one of India's most successful character actors, the late Amrish Puri. One of Puri's biggest films in India is one that ran for well over 20 years in cinemas non-stop, and might still be playing. The film is called Dilwale Dulhania La Jayenge (The Braveheart Takes the Bride) starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, and Puri plays Kajol's father. If you want a good Indian film...DDLJ is a lot of fun! - This was the film that was responsible for the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. So many people were sickened by the banquet scene and the Thugee sacrifice scene that the board overseeing the film ratings made changes to create a rating between PG & R. The first film to be rated PG-13 came out in August of 1984, about 3 months after Temple of Doom. The first PG-13 film was Red Dawn. - There is one other film that was made in the early 1980s that both Amrish Puri (Mola Ram) and Roshan Seth (Chatter Lal, the Maharaja's secretary) both appeared in. They were part of the film Gandhi (1982) starring Ben Kingsley as the title character. Puri appears in the early part of the film set in South Africa, and Seth appears later in the India section of the film as Jawaharlal Nehru, the man who would become India's first Prime Minister in 1947. Fun fact: Gandhi also has a very young Daniel Day-Lewis making one of his first screen appearances in the South Africa section of the film. Gandhi won 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Director, and Actor (Kingsley).
