@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192wow. Imo 3 is the worst one, too much cheesiness & corny action that felt like it came out of a Michael Bay movie. MI 4-7 are some of the best action movies I’ve ever seen with some of the most creative & craziest action sequences I’ve ever seen in the action genre. This franchise is so good. 2 is a slow one for certain but it isn’t as bad as 3 imo. Although the first 3 are just okay to me, none of them are bad-bad. But 4-7 are all masterpieces.

this was a HUGE tv series in the 60s and 70s with 7 seasons. and Jim Phelps the leader of this group who ended up being the bad guy, he also was the leader for season 2-7. So he was the "main" good guy. thats why people was SOOO surprised he ended being the bad guy and not saw it coming, because this is the main good guy hero of the tv show.

@@ForeverMan724 Peter Graves -- who played Jim Phelps in the tv series -- hated what they did to his character in the movie. He describes Phelps as a patriot and is why he turned down the movie role when it was offered to him. The best Mission: Impossible films duplicate the team aspect of the TV series, which had 1) a smooth-talking leader, 2) a femme fatale, 3) a master of disguise, 4) an electronics expert and 5) a strongman. Basically, it was a circus of spies.

15:51 I know it's a miniscule nitpick, but look up Split-Field Diopter. It's not an image on top of another, it's a practical camera effect that Brian De Palma uses sometimes. In fact, he uses it again in 19:06 and it works much better (so much so that you didn't even mention it). The reason the guy in the back is still in focus is for comic effect (I think), because he's taking the fall for what happened and he just generally looks pretty dorky in the middle of all this cool spycraft.

@@cruelangel8689 Yeah, it was a very John Woo movie, which is great if you like Woo (I do), but, coming after De Palma, made for a very abrupt shift in tone. And, at the time, the future direction of the franchise wasn't clear, so I think some of the backlash was more against the possibility of MI as a series becoming much more straight action, as opposed to issues with MI2 itself. I think if people rewatch now, knowing that the MI series pulled back more towards the tone of 1 as it moved forward, then they might find Woo's entry to be better than they remembered. It might not actually be two different shots laid on top of each other at 15:55. It's hard to tell in your edit but there is a special kind of lens where you can focus half the lens on something in the foreground and the other half on something in the background (I think you can also adjust how much of the frame each side gets too). It's called a split diopter lens. Could be a composite of different shots but odds are it's the lens because frankly it's would have been cheaper at this point in time.

My favorite action movie spy franchise! Original composer Alan Silvestri, PREDATOR, FORREST GUMP, THE AVENGERS, was hired to do the music, but was later fired from the project as Director Brian DePalma complained that the score wasn't powerful enough and hired Danny Elfmam instead. Silvestri's rejected score would be used for the Arnold Schwarzenegger Action Thriller ERASER.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 5 ай бұрын
Nothing against Silvestri, but I think De Palma clearly made the right choice. The semi-cheesy '60s bombastic tone of the movie and the narrative wouldn't work nearly as well without Elfman's score leaning hard on the emotional buttons. There are times for subtlety, and these ain't them.

Brian De Palma is a Mater Filmmaker. He uses that "close up-background" shot in every movie, and brilliantly, to show that both parts are equally important. He also uses titled shots, like when Hunt says "you never seen me upset". In the elevator scene you see that there isn't much room to move, and I'm sure the blades go all the way to the top of the roof, leaving even less room. also, did you notice 13:08 Hunt is holding the knife saying "Zero body count" next to a sign that reads "Positively no smoking" (smoking as in killing someone). now that's brilliant. To me this one is the best M:I movie of them all.

So that intro was not typical of the 90s. It was typical of the 60s, as this was emulating the intro of the original series. It continues to do so to this day. Some of the tech you saw was what that tech looked like then. Movies were already about 70 years old at this point, and modern VFX were about 30. So I'm always a little surprised people think it was only the last ten years or so cinematography, storytelling or visual effects got good. We kinda got this. Quite some time ago. :) So that close up with the one dude in focus was very intentional to create a certain look. These movies are gonna get even more intricate. So brace yourself.

Hey Angelina, the trapeze scene at C.I.A. headquarters has, in fact, been imitated to death. However, MI itself "borrowed" the idea from a 1964 movie called Topkapi which also had an impossible mission (a jewel heist from a Turkish museum). Someone should really react to the latter film.

What up. Late comment. M:I is based on one of several tv series, created by Bruce Gellar. Among many to hit television of the 1960s Spy craze. My introduction to M:I was the second series from the late 1980s that featured characters of the original series with newer characters. Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer by forming a company with Paula Wagner. Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie. This was 1 of 2 films for Cruise in 1996 (the other was Jerry Maguire). This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat. Thanks to this franchise, Cruise becomes a even bigger movie star and the consummate stunt performer we know today. The legendary theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement. Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did the new version for the 1st movie. As reruns of the tv series resurged during the movie's success, Cruise definitely had a franchise. Also there was tie-in media, the video game by Ocean and the M:I comic book series aka The Ethan Hunt Chronicles from Marvel. I couldn't wait for more missions as an fan, coming soon and I chose to accept them all.

When it came out I was blown away. It retained much of the original (TV series from 1960s) mystery and THEATRICS atmosphere and made it more visually stunning. Later ones shift more and more from thriller to action, from mystery to killery, but it's fine. And the original music theme, but on steroids. And with that first one you might have wondered if someone instead of Cruise. But with each next one you knew it had to be him, someone else might've gotten it wrong. If I had had a say I would have voted against bringing the forgotten TV series to the big screen and couldn't have been happier to have been proven wrong. To you it's an older movie with older ideas of camera work and editing. To me - it was the embodiment of the new in the cinema that I wasn't sure I was going to like.

I really like this film, it's much more of a suspenseful thriller rather than a big action film, and I like how the plot throws loads of twists and turns that throw you for a loop and leave you as disoriented as Ethan himself. The camerawork is also really slick and stylish, and the script has so many fantastic lines - it's definitely the best-written dialogue in the series. Speaking of which, you definitely have to watch the rest of the films, with just one exception (specifically the next one) the Mission Impossible films have been consistently great and have mostly got better and better with each entry. And if you're looking for other spy movies to check out, you really can't go wrong with the grandfather of the genre, the Bond films (though considering how many of them there are, you'll certainly be in it for the long haul if you decide to go down that route)

Mission impossible was huge back before Tom Cruise even got on board. The theme has always been iconic. This mission impossible was a remake update whatever you want to call it for an at the time excellent spy TV series. Love your reaction videos. Side note I would love to see you check out a silly action movie also from a TV series. The A-Team

The director was Brian De Palma. Several film geeks I know refer to him as "Dizzy" De Palma. You're not the only one who finds his camerawork discomforting.

Those camera takes that annoyed you so much are kind of a trade mark from Brian de Palma, and are kind of top of his art on creating dramatic scenes. Of course he didn't invent it, you'll see similar shots in movies from Orson Welles and Hitchcok as well, but de Palma has a very particular touch of how intimate he work on the shot, using not only the closeness (is that a word?), but also the contrast with light and shadows, and the split focus diopter (that creates this effect) to include the third individual in the context of the conversation (so, no, it was not using different shots), but you'll see even better results in Blow Out IMHO. Needless to say that other directors use that too. In fact, I think its use is more and more frequent nowadays.

Donloe is in the background because they’re talking about him. He’s nervous because his fate is in their hands. The audience can see his anxiety and can feel sorry for him. Plus, there is some humor in it. He was totally clueless. One moment he’s smiling and sipping his coffee with this hot girl sitting next to him and the next he’s nauseous and puking. Plus, the up close shots of him turning green and grimacing while he’s groaning in pain were cool too.

It's funny seeing Angelina get so freaked out by the split-diopter shots. I personally think they are really cool, but sadly you don't seem them all to often anymore. Brian De Palma is such a good director.

I still love the first one. At the time it was still new tech so a lot of the audience couldn’t follow the ending where they were transferring the data on the train. I loved seeing it in the theaters, but this one was pure plot (and like I said lots of people couldn’t follow the plot) , so for the second they went almost pure action. Too much if you ask me. By the third one they’d found a happy balance and they’re all great after that. But it’s always a toss up between one and five as to which is my fav.

You have to give the crown of 'original' spy movie more to the Bond Franchise than MI. Mission Impossible just took the bond premise and cranked up the action. Not taking anything away from MI both franchises are much watch if you like the spy genre. Interesting trivia first Bond book was released in 1953 with the first movie (Sean Connery) in 1962. Mission impossible was first introduced as a TV series in 1966.

I'd really love to see you react to the Pierce Brosnan Bond films that came out during this period. Everyone seems to skip straight to the Daniel Craig films but I grew up with Brosnan and have a real soft spot for the 90sness of them all.

Hi Ange!😊 I have a little mission Impossible fatigue, but because it is you I will watch it!😉 They must have a henchman that is just on mask detail.😆 The music is from the opening of the original series. It was very successful when it aired from the 60s to 70s. The series even belonged to Paramount way back then, too. They've held onto the rights for a long time. Great reactions to the first Mission Impossible film, Ange!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

Hey Angelina, I just saw your "Taken" video (I don't know how I missed it!) and wanted to suggest the A-Team movie that Liam Neesen did with Bradley Cooper. It's around the same time and I don't think that movie gets enough love, it is incredibly epic! you don't need to know anything about the show and it's just a proper action movie, with Liam being another BAMF.

MI Fallout is the finest practical effects movie I've seen. I love this franchise but this 1st movie is disrespectful of the TV show its based on. Jim was the main character for multiple seasons. But the main thing that upset people at the time was the IMF used to go in, do something incredibly clever and get out without anyone really noticing. The Langley infiltration was probably the most MI thing of the entire franchise. Also worth mentioning this is not the version we got in the cinema with scenes like Ethan smashing Jim's wife cut. It's the tunnel between France & England, its a big ass tunnel.

As for other great spy films, you can't go wrong with the James Bond franchise (well, you can, depending on the movie, but most of them are fun if you accept them as products of their time), and the Jason Bourne movies starring Matt Damon. All of those would be reaction content worthy because of their popularity. An underrated spy movie that doesn't get a lot of attention is SALT, starring Angeline Jolie. It was clearly meant to be the beginning of a franchise, but it didn't do well at the box office. Which is a shame, because it's actually really good. It has the same kind of plot twisting as M:I, and some pretty decent action. Angelina Jolie is a believable action heroine, but I think general audiences weren't ready for a female spy hero yet. Speaking of which, ATOMIC BLONDE, with Charlize Theron, is a great recent spy thriller with amazing action sequences. You might like that one, too. It's more like JOHN WICK than like M:I, but does have plenty of Cold War spy intrigue going on.
