Walter telling "Donnie to shut the F*ck up" is a bit of a inside joke by the Coen Brothers. They added it because Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo talked so much.

I used to work with a guy like the dude when I worked at a gym. He would open the building every morning for 5 years at 4 am. When a new manager took over they let him go because they didn’t like how relaxed he was about everything. I felt so bad for him but he said don’t feel bad for me feel bad for the poor sob that now has to come in at 4am. 10 days later he was rehired by the OWNER for more money because the new 4am person quit.

I’d start with the Coen Brothers’ movie that most of us saw first: Raising Arizona. A very funny, character-driven story. The thing that really unifies Coen Brother movies is the characters. Each are lovingly crafted and acted. The stories are hard to predict because they generally rely on the capriciousness of humans and the chaotic nature of life to influence the arc of the story. (Edited to correct a typo - thanks).

I didn't like this movie, at first. But friends kept on quoting it, so gave it another chance and realized: this is the quintessential "shaggy dog story" (from wiki: "an extremely long-winded anecdote characterized by extensive narration of typically irrelevant incidents and terminated by an anticlimax.") It somehow clicked and I can appreciate this gem of a film!

Yes! Great description. It's also a cousin to my favorite movie genre, the "left turn story", where you THINK the movie is about one thing, but then it goes suddenly and in full force in a completely different direction, and then when you think you've got it figured it it turns direction again. Pulp Fiction is maybe the best example of this, also the criminally underrated Headhunters, which is just so much fun.

I would suggest to watch The Maltese Falcon (1941) and/or to read the books by Dashille Hammette and Raymond Chandler - you'll see a lot of what The Coen Brother borrowed from The Maltese Falcon in terms of the style of plot, strange characters, etc. TBL is basically at it's core similar to the hard-boiled detective film noirs of the 1940's. The same with the Coen's Intolerable Cruelty - where they basically wanted to create their version of the screwball comedies of the 1940's.

First: props on your dedication and filming this when you were sick and then getting yourself up to film the outtro after you were feeling a bit better. I really respect dedication in people and definitely appreciate your drive. Secondly: one of the things I appreciate about your channel is how insightful you always wind up being. There's a lot going on in this movie and a lot of people don't get it the first time through. But you picked up on some important themes with it on your first go around, despite not feeling great. So that's really cool. Finally: this is definitely one of those films that gets better with subsequent viewings. So even though this is a style of comedy that you say you're unfamiliar with, I thing you'll find yourself appreciating more and more about it with each vieiwing. The Coen brothers are playing around with a bunch of different kinds of satire in this one so I definitely think you'll come to find it funnier and funnier as the film and what its trying to do opens up to you in subsequent viewings. At least I know it did for me. The first time I watched it I thought it was an interesting but rather strange film. And now I find myself laughing throughout almost every scene. So I definitely recommend watching this film at least another time or two down the road for yourself. Anways, I'm sure you're better by now, but wishing you well regardless. Nice reaction. :)

The Coen Brothers are the best at creating iconic background characters, with very little screen time, they show up and they're instantly memorable. This movie is amazing because I really don't care about the plot at all, the Rogues Gallery of the cast is just endlessly fun to watch.

The Big Lebowski isn't based on a true story, but the characters were based on real life friends of the Coen brothers. The Dude was based on anti-war activist Jeff Dowd, and Walter was based on screenwriter John Milius.

The Big Lebowski is one of my favorite films of the Cohen Brothers. Their formula, whether it's a comedy or drama, is that it revolves around the same theme: a fiasco. The protagonist makes a series of bad decisions that spiral out of control until they come out of it at the other end. Sometimes it turns out well, sometimes not. Either way, the journey is what makes it great. Espero que te mejores pronto!

@sbcinema2363
@sbcinema2363 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Duaffy, I'm so glad you watched this movie! To get a deeper appreciation of this movie please watch The Maltese Falcon (1941) on which it's style and story is based. What few people today realize is that this movie is structured and plotted like the hard-boiled detective novels by Dashielle Hammette or Raymond Chandler. But instead of a Sam Spade you get the Dude, and instead of San Francisco you get LA. Both story are not so much concerned with the plot, but with exploring the hidden strange stories of the city that find their way to the detective, the interesting characters, and the secret plots and machinations one encounters when trying to solve a mystery. If you watch The Maltese Falcon (1941), you'll understand The Big Lebowski a whole lot better. After all, The Dude does solve the whole mystery, doesn't he? He is our detective. :) Also if you're looking for the next Coen Brothers movie to watch - please consider the only romantic comedy they ever directed: Intolerable Cruelty. It's one of my favorite movies. It's also based on a movie-type of the 40's: The Screwball Comedy.

Fargo did that, so nothing to complain about, real or not the story effected you, real or not doesn't matter

If you keep watching Coen movies, you'll see that you can never know what you get except a common theme of greed and that it doesn't pay. There is usually a big bunch of money involved that different persons want. They have covered almost every genre. Only later do they make movies similar to earlier ones. The only thing I haven't seen from them are sci-fi and horror. I think I've written this on your channel before, but if you want to watch a Coen movie that isn't a comedy Miller's Crossing (1990) is really good.

I have always liked quirky day in the life movies like this that don't follow a definitive plot. This reminds me of some very crazy weekends I've had in the past. Plus the fact almost all of the locations filmed are near where I live (Java lanes bowling alley, Point Fermin etc.) make it seem kind of personal. Plus the fact we were almost always in a drug induced haze as this movie seems to be brings it full circle.

I like how all of your emotional investment was in how well everyone was bowling.

This is classical 1940s film noir mystery scenario, then they throw in these much more modern characters into the story. The laid back stoner, the aggressive gun lover, the free spirit artist. This conflict is where the fun is generated.

Yeah, it's pretty much a remake of The Big Sleep

If you liked this, you should watch Raising Arizona, Burn After Reading, and The Hudsucker Proxy. The thing to understand about the Coen brothers is that they have a formula: they alternate between making one comedy/ light film and one dark movie/ crime film. So you should look for every other Coen Brothers movie.

There's a newer release, "The Jesus Rolls", that focuses on John Turturro's character, that explains and softens the charges against him. It is a very different film from this one though.
