Mel Brooks said that the genius of the movie is that it was written on two different levels: the adults would find humor in the parody of the movie and the kids would be engaged with the story and characters. I think that's what makes the movie so beloved.

Duaffy, when you said that the head of Megamaid reminded you of the Statue of Liberty, you were not wrong. The payoff comes near the end of the movie where the head and arm of Megamaid land on the planet. It's an homage to the 1968 "Planet of the Apes." The drummer alludes to Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra," featured in "2001: A Space Odyssey". The chest burster scene in the diner featured John Hurt, who starred in the first "Alien" movie. Three things: the joke about passing Jupiter 2 wasn't a reference to the 5th planet in our solar system. It was, in fact, a reference to the name of the spaceship in the 1960's Irwin Allen sci-fi TV series "Lost in Space". Second, the ludicrous speed joke has nothing to do with the rapper of the same name. Ludicrous means really ridiculous so it was just a name for a super fast speed beyond light speed. Finally, you were right that Spaceball One looked like the Statue of Liberty as when the head crashes into the beach and the ape men showed up on horseback...that joke was referencing the original Planet of the Ape movies with Charlton Heston of the late 1960s.

I've heard that Mel Brooks was willing to make a Spaceballs sequel ONLY if Rick Moranis would return as Dark Helmet (the thing is that Moranis retired from acting in the middle of the 90's after his wife died in cancer and he wanted to raise and take care of their kids. He mostly did voice acting in the early 2000's and he's been offered to return in many of his well known roles but always turned it down. One or two years ago he actually returned to acting by being in a commercial with Ryan Reynolds and he's apparently gonna be in a reboot of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids). But now Mel Brooks is actually gonna do a sequel to History of the World, part 1 (which will be his 1st directing movie since Dracula: Dead and Loving It from 1995).

Tropic Thunder, South Park, Rick and Morty, It's Always Sunny, basically anything with Will Ferrell, etc., etc., etc. Feel free to stack that up against the film and TV offerings of your mythical "golden age of free comedy" that was the '80s. Is "Perfect Strangers" or "Full House" your idea of free-wheeling vicious satire? The whole concept is just whining by white boys that they didn't get to pass-off stupid lazy stereotypes as "comedy" or be the only voices in the room any more, and the results of the move have been way better and far riskier comedy from a much wider variety of viewpoints. I defy you to demonstrate otherwise. It's particularly stupid that you'd make this comment under a Mel Brooks work, as he battled exactly the kind of white-supremacist nonsense you're pushing to get both his voice and those of other marginalized groups heard.

"What's the matter Colonel Sandurz, chicken?" As for the 'talented' person with the noises, his name is Michael Winslow, and you can see him again in the Police Academy movies (which are also comedies and the first two or three aren't so bad... and... well... then there's 4, 5, 6, and 7...). Not sure if you understood the Spaceballs landing in the head of Mega Maid, but it'd make more sense if you watched a very old movie called 'Planet of the Apes'. In order to understand the joke with the human-like apes and the Statue of Liberty on the beach, you'll have to watch the sci-fi classic _Planet of the Apes_ (1968). It's part of a huge and very famous plot twist in that movie from Rod Serling, who also created the TV series _The Twilight Zone_ .

the radar operator making the sounds is comedian Michael Winslow, he was big in the 80s in a lot of commercials and the police academy movies. We even got dancing Duaffy. Only thing better would be to get our host an actual flamethrower.

The scene with the monster breaking out the guys stomach at the diner was a spoof of the movie alien. The actor is John Hurt who had the monster emerge from him in Alien. The song and dance the monster did was a recreation of a famous cartoon about a talking frog. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6S1gH9qgMtrh7s

Also wanted to mention it was funny how Mel Brooks played the roll of Yogurt, because he literally just crawled around on his knees with the cape and robes covering his feet. That had to be uncomfortable even with padding, I have a lot of respect for any Actor/Director who’s willing to go through that effort just to make it look good, especially if it’s a parody and not a high budget movie.

To answer your question, From Wikipedia, "Schwartz is a last name of German origin, meaning “black” (modern spelling in German is Schwarz). It was originally a nickname for someone with black hair or a dark complexion." However, ... (read on) However, I could fathom that it took on a derogatory meaning in Germany because Hitler thought that the "Master Race" would be made up of people that all exhibited traits, such as, "Tall (over 6'), Fair Complexion, Blond Hair and Blue Eyed", so being a person with black hair would make you inferior, as would having dark skin.

5:52 something noone catches is one guy doesn't stand up and go 'Yo!'. The guy still sitting happens to be the replacement of the guy who got schwartzed at the beginning of the movie. oh, and can't find 100% confirmation on this one, but apparently Mel Brooks was allergic to something in the facepaint they used for Yogurt. ((that's something to keep in mind, Mel played a character in near all his movies. Spaceballs he played 2))

Duaffy, I realize you posted this over a year ago, but thank you so much for enjoying "Spaceballs"! It was a joy to see you laughing out loud to all the silly, over-the-top humour here. I loved this movie as a kid and still laugh at it a lot, but with a few years behind me, I realize that it's not nearly as sophisticated as some of Mel Brooks' other comedy films. It remains near and dear to my heart, however, and I hope it's found a special place in yours. My favourite exchange: "What's your name?" "Barf." "Your full name!" "Barfolomew!"

Great reaction! Please add to a poll 1994’s comedy, Clerks. In it, the two main characters have a heavy conversation about Star Wars and it is very intriguing. Just one part of a extremely hilarious film.

The movie is a spoof of several different well-known movies. Off hand there was Star Wars, Star Trek, The Wizard of Oz, Planet of the Apes, Abbot and Costello skits, and off course; Alien. You'll surely notice that the actor, John Hurt, who had the chest-burster scene in Alien reprised his role for this movie.

The Alien at the end is a callback to a Warner Brothers cartoon about a signing and dancing frog. Man finds a frog, it suddenly puts on a top hat and cane then starts dancing and singing that song. Man thinks he'll get rich in showbiz. Frog stays a frog in public but starts the routine the man is alone. Repeat many more times for laughs. The Frog was also an early mascot of the Warner Brothers TV network but was quickly dropped.

10:23 > Well, yes...it is a Mel Brooks parody, after all. It mostly makes fun of Star Ward, but there are other things in there as well, for example 11:43 - The Wizard of Oz 20:55 That really is John Hurt from Alien doing the chest-burster scene. There is also a scene based on 'Planet of the Apes'.
