The first season of the American superhero television series The Boys, the first series in the franchise based on the comic book series of the same name written by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, was developed for television by American writer and television producer Eric Kripke. The season was produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with Point Grey Pictures, Original Film, Kripke Enterprises, Kickstart Entertainment and KFL Nightsky Productions.
The first season of the series stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Kapon, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, and Elisabeth Shue. The story takes place in a universe where most of the superpowered individuals are recognized as superheroes, but in reality abuse their powers for personal gain, information the public is kept unaware of. The series follows the eponymous Boys (led by Billy Butcher), a group of vigilantes looking to bring down Vought International and expose its corrupt superheroes. When his girlfriend is accidentally killed by A-Train, Hughie Campbell joins the Boys to get revenge against the Seven. Meanwhile, Annie January is forced to face the truth about those she admires, after she joins the Seven, led by Homelander. The Boys attempt to stop Vought from receiving government support for superheroes by uncovering the company's secrets. When Hughie and Annie begin a romantic relationship, the conflict is muddled despite the two of them initially being unaware of each other's affiliations.

Antony is well-known in New Zealand for playing identical twin brothers Jethro and Van West in a comedy/drama show called Outrageous Fortune. Karl is also a Kiwi and had a role in New Zealand's long running dinnertime drama series Shortland Street.

Interesting that you guys interpreted Starlight saying "this place isn't what I remember" to mean "it's got Vaught all over it." I thought it was pretty clear that she's referring to just how bigoted and close-minded some of the religious community is - the anti-gay signs saying "FLY STRAIGHT", or the priest subtly nudging her to lie to teens about being a virgin and waiting for marriage, because sex "defiles" you. I think it's capturing a common reality of many religious people growing up and becoming a bit more independent and worldly: subtle issues that used to fly under the radar become much more noticeable, and they realize that there may have been harmful messages hiding among all the genuinely inspirational/helpful messages.

Pretty much this ep sets up why Homelander is the way he is with Madeline, if supers are made then it’s likely he was raised in a lab, sonhe never really had parents and never had a mother. Madeline is a female authority figure in his life, perhaps the only one he has ever had, so he’s never had that closeness of a mother coddling him, but he’s a grown man so basically has mommy issues. And she seems to know this and knows how she can use it to manipulate and emotionally control him since there is no real way to control him any other way because he’s just all powerful.

So not sure if you guys caught what Starlight was actually saying. She wasn't saying that Vaught had somehow corrupted the festival. What she was saying is she is seeing the place in a whole new light. Vought had been there when she was a little girl and you can actually see she is super uncomfortable with the incredibly conservative Christianity that is offered by the priest to those teens. Starlight still believes in God but she is starting to see that the evangelical Christianity she grew up in is not as good as she remembered.

The fly was actually an accident the first time, but Krupke left it in and continued using the idea of the fly circling around to show the corruption that the characters were encountering. A lot of people think that Teddy (Stillwell's son) is Homelander's baby, but they never seem to go into who the father is. I assumed she had an in-vitro so she could show herself as a "strong independent single mother."
