A few Bible geek info's: Working on the Sabbath is a huge problem, it is one of the 10 commandments and it is a huge sin (Exodus 20:8). That is why they take it with so much shame. It is unlikely that (Simon) Peter would have broken the Sabbath because they take this sort of thing very seriously. And yes, Matthew has been rejected by his family because he has chosen to work for the occupying power, and not only that, the tax collector also cheated their own people by demanding higher taxes, so they could get rich them self. Also, just a note, Jesus grew up in Nazareth, but he was born in Bethlehem (which means house of bread) and they had to flee to Egypt when all boys under 2 were murdered in the area - in a quest to kill Jesus (they you can read about in Luke). Jesus was in Egypt for a few years before, and came out of Egypt just like the Israelite did in Exodus. Thanks for the video - and God bless

15:12 He was VERY SMART (and has a few little quirks that make him unique) and the Romans knew it…AND he was young…AND it was a good career with great pay….BUT it was a slap in the face to his Jewish family and to all Jews. Tax collectors were the lowest of the low to the Jews. They were hated so much that he had to be in a booth with bars and have an armed Roman escort. They were taxed SO much. 😢
@SchustersinChrist3 ай бұрын
That makes sense, interesting, thank you for the insight!🙏🏻

Tax collectors in those days were especially hate it because they were permitted, if not encouraged to charge more than what the Romans wanted so that they can pocket the excess. So to do that to your own people was beyond reprehensible

Hi guys! Unfortunately I had some problems and was only able to watch the video today, but I can assure you that from the moment you posted the video until today I've been thinking about it. 😂 And the first thing I have to say is that it's very interesting to see how a new convert reacts to the biblical stories and to each character. (Otto if you're reading this and you're feeling a bit out of place, don't worry because we all started out that way too. Don't be cowed, ask as many questions as you need to. I'm sure we're very happy to see you discovering more and more about the gospel). I really like this series because it allows us to experience the Bible in a closer way (even if it's not literally like the Bible). The way Jesus is presented captivated me. Like a true friend. The way each disciple is unique and behaves differently from the others is fantastic! Anyway, I'll try to come back more often. I hope you're well and God bless you! 🙏🏼❤ And if I've written something wrong, forgive me. My English is far from perfect 🫠

The Chosen adds to the accounts of the Bible. That is, it fills in many details not covered with a plausible story. Its not a replacement for reading the actual historical accounts in the Gospels.

Nicodemus would have completely known every word of the Torah (first 5 books) by age 13 he would have been tested on it and if he failed he would not have become a Rabbi. I would not be surprised if he could not speak word for word the entire Old Testament.
@arkikali56323 ай бұрын
I don't think Simon was acting out of a love of money, per se. If he didn't come up with the money, the Romans were going to take his boat (i.e. his livelihood / how he earned a living), his house, and they might have executed him, and he also had a wife to support. So it wasn't just a case of him being greedy and / or wanting more or better things.
@SchustersinChrist3 ай бұрын
He did however develop an addiction to gambling which does stem from greediness, but after, when he started having problems because of the tax, then yeah, he was just trying to survive with his family
@arkikali56323 ай бұрын
@@SchustersinChrist I don't think the Bible ever says Simon Peter was a gambler though. I think that's something the show added to flesh out his character. I'm a baby Christian, so I may be wrong, but so far as I know, most of the backstory of the disciples was added by the show's creators. I don't think it's ever mentioned in the gospel that Simon Peter (SP) fished on the Sabbath, informed on people to Romans (or had an agreement to do so), or that he gambled. All of that, so far as I know, is fiction written in by the show. And I'm not complaining about that--the show is wonderful and I'm eagerly awaiting the next season, but recall the intro placard at the beginning of season 1, episode 1--that they take creative liberties and the show is not a replacement for reading the Bible. Regarding gambling: I put forth that people do not just gamble for greed. Plenty of people gamble for entertainment or socially. My mother-in-law plays spades (a card game) every other week with some of her friends. I think she sets a limit of $20. But for her that's a chance to have an evening with her friends and they might just as well be watching a movie or discussing a book. Just because he plays a hand or three of cards or darts at the local bar doesn't make him greedy. Anyway, I appreciate the reaction and look forward to the next. 🙂

"Rabbi" simply means "teacher" and was the title for people who could teach the scriptures. Rabbis in the modern sense did not yet exist. Modern rabbinic Judaism only emerged as a reaction to 1) the destruction of the temple and 2) the separation from the Christian sect. The lack of a temple in particular had deprived Judaism of its essential basis of faith and modern Judaism was an adaptation and reorientation. In fact, Christianity is closer to the Judaism of that time in terms of its religious orientation than modern Judaism is.

Except for a few things out of order, it is biblically accurate. They just have a lot to fill in so they have to create characters and dialog that fit.

@@arkikali5632 No one is saying that that is not so. It is a show that fills in the gaps of scripture, otherwise it'd just be people walking around quoting scripture.
