YES….YES…YEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!! This is my favorite movie ever! The Crow is actually is a multilayered film, it deals with vengeance, sorrow, dealing with loss, and the true power of love. I am a total nerd for this movie. Brandon Lee was engaged to be married when filming wrapped, but sadly he passed away. At the end credits when it sayFor Brandon and Eliza, Eliza was his fiancé. Also; Chad Stahenski, the director of John Wick, was Brandon’s stunt double who stood in after Brandon died.

James O'Barr was 18, he became engaged to a girl named Beverley. Beverley was hit and killed by a drunk driver before they got married. James began work on The Crow graphic novel as a way to deal with his grief. I met him at my first Comic Con when it was in Seattle and got my Crow's and Northstar #1 signed.

@@rayharley597 No, she was an officer for BLM (Bureau of Land Management) who confronted some ranch hands poisoning coyotes. The rancher they worked for was a militia leader who decided it was now or never to send a message. He had his men set off a fertilizer bomb in front of her office building, a la Tim McVeigh, killing her, her unborn child, and several innocent bystanders. She was pretty badass as far as Crows go. First guy she went after she told him about the poor old lady who came by the office to pick up her pension check and wound up buried under concrete and took hours to bleed to death. So she mortally wounds him then buries him alive in a ditch. Would've made for an interesting sequel. Also that one about the Indian that was murdered by Confederate soldiers who comes back to life hundreds of years later to get revenge on his killers, reincarnated into drug dealing bikers.

I know some parts of the movie were changed, presumably in the aftermath of Lee's death. For example, you can see shots where Eric has spent bullet casings tied into his hair, but there are no scenes of him actually doing it. I can't remember if the original comic book story was even finished when the movie script was written; I want to recall there being a pretty big gap before the fifth issue was published. I'd always figured that was the reason the movie falls apart after Eric kills the gang members (which covered issues 1-4).

@japython
@japython 3 жыл бұрын
@@iceman1833 The gun used was by no means a blank gun, the gun used was a Smith & Wesson Model 629 44 Magnum Revolver, during close ups the weapon was loaded with improperly made dummy round cartridges that are made to look like real bullets for close up shots of the revolver so it will look loaded, they forgot to remove the primers from the rounds, at some point before the accident someone fired the gun and even though there was no powder in the bullets the charge was enough to cause te bullet to get lodged in the barrel, finally when they were going to shoot the scene they loaded the gun with blank rounds which have primers and gunpowder, the resulting shot fired the bullet lodged in the barrel out of the gun with the same force as a standard bullet striking Brandon in the Abdomen.
@McPh1741
@McPh1741 3 жыл бұрын
@@iceman1833 This is what happened in a nutshell. During filming there were 2 types of ammo on set, prop bullets and blanks. The prop bullets are realistic looking live ammo but with no primer and no powder in the cartridges. Blank ammo is, well blanks, they go bang, pretty much live ammo with no projectile. At one point a prop master was sent out to buy REAL 44 magnum ammo to use as prop ammo. The bullets were removed and the powder poured out. however, the primers were left in. One of the prop bullets was put in Funboy's gun and he pulled the trigger on it. The primer went off and surprised everyone. The gun was unloaded but they didn't see that the primer had enough pressure to shoot the bullet out of the cartridge and it got stuck in the barrel. During one of the scenes when Funboy shoots Brandon, the blank round went off and had enough pressure to push the bullet out the rest of the way and he basically shot Brandon in the chest. A tragic sequence of events

So glad you did this one. A classic for sure. I really think no other actor of that generation really would've 'got' what this character was all about. The way you mentioned the style of it and how it stood out from the other films, I think was definitely enhanced because of how deeply thoughtful Brandon Lee was about the emotional core of Eric. He was such a unique and gifted person. Being a 90s teen, that whole era and this film is all bottled up in a special time. I hope it's a rewatchable for you. The flashback scene of Eric's death was originally going to show Funboy shooting him, but a bullet head had gotten stuck in the prop gun barrel earlier, and they foolishly sent the gun expert home early before he could even look at it. So when Michael Masse fired the blank round at Brandon, he unknowingly dislodged the stuck bullet at him, so it was just like shooting a real bullet. Contrary to popular belief, the footage of Brandon's death was not included in the final cut - it was destroyed and the scene was re-shot in first person view, with a stunt double, and changed to show Tin Tin throwing a knife at him instead. And when Eric is thrown out the window, Brandon's face is digitally inserted over the stuntman's.

Ever since having seen The Crow upon its release, it has been one of my most favourite films. Not only because the performances are excellent, but because it’s visually stunning, has possibly one of the best soundtracks; & also because of what Proyas achieved. The Crow was filmed somewhat back to front; with Brandon Lee filming all the scenes of him in make up first. This meant that the scenes of him without the now iconic make up would be some of the last filmed on the production; & sadly the last Lee would’ve ever film. On March 31, 1993, Lee was filming a scene where his character, Eric, is shot after witnessing the beating and rape of his fiancée. Actor Michael Massee's character Funboy fires a .44 Smith & Wesson Model 639 revolver at Lee as he walks into the room. A previous scene using the same gun had called for inert dummy cartridges fitted with bullets, but no powder or primer, to be loaded in the revolver. For close-up scenes that use a revolver, where the bullets are clearly visible from the front, and do not require the gun to actually be fired, dummy cartridges provide a more realistic appearance than blank rounds, which have no bullet. Instead of purchasing commercial dummy cartridges, the film's prop crew, hampered by time constraints, created their own by pulling the bullets from live rounds, dumping the powder charge, then reinserting the bullets. In the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be actually fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 feet, the dummy cartridges were exchanged for blank rounds, which feature a live powder charge and primer, but no bullet, thus allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. As the production company had sent the firearms specialist home early, responsibility for the guns was given to a prop assistant who was unaware of the rule for inspecting all firearms before and after any handling. Therefore, the barrel was not checked for obstructions when the time came to load it with the blank rounds. Since the bullet from the dummy round was already trapped in the barrel, this caused the .44 Magnum bullet to be fired out of the barrel with virtually the same force as if the gun had been loaded with a live round, and it struck Lee in the abdomen, mortally wounding him. O'Barr later remarked that losing Lee was like losing his fiancée all over again, and he regretted ever writing the comic in the first place. In an interview in 2005, 12 years after the incident, Massee revealed that he still had nightmares about it, stating, "I don't think you ever get over something like that." After a great deal of soul-searching, Proyas and the rest of The Crow's cast and crew arrived at the conclusion that Lee would have insisted that they finish the film. With most of the actor's scenes completed, it was up to special effects house Dream Quest to fill in the blanks, which they accomplished in a number of ways. For the scene in which a newly-returned-from-the-grave Eric returns to his old apartment, for example, unused footage of Lee was used, with the actor's image digitally composited into a shot of the apartment set. For a few other key images, however, the effects technicians turned to techniques that were, in 1993, ridiculously cutting edge. Proyas brought in a relatively green stunt performer by the name of Chad Stahelski, who had been good friends with Lee and had a similar build. For a handful of scenes, including the one in which Eric sports his eerie makeup for the first time, approaching his window as lightning briefly illuminates the room, Stahleski stood in for Lee during shooting. Then, Dream Quest used previously captured footage of Lee to digitally graft the actor's face on Stahleski's body. The resulting shots certainly benefit from their brevity and from the darkness in which they were shot, but even today, the effect holds up remarkably well. Fun Fact: The Cure who wrote the song ‘Burn’ specifically for the film refused to perform it live for many years, as a sign of respect to Brandon Lee. Only in the past few years back did they decide the start playing it live.

There have been a few Crow movies, but THIS is my favorite depiction of Draven (mostly because it was my first time seeing him, even before I knew there was a Graphic Novel) But Mark Dicascos from the series did a good job as well. The show even had them exploring the idea that the Crow's spirit shares the body of the person brought back. Eric has "bird-like" head movements in the show.

I really love this film, it's one of my favourites and your video was really great so thank you for that. There is actually 3 sequels to this with different Crows in each. I believe in the second one (The Crow: City of Angels) it has Thuy Trang (Trini from the original Power Rangers line up) in her last role before her passing. The sequels don't hold a candle to the original but I'd be open to watching a reboot if they did it in a way that honours the original while doing their own thing like them. Anyway. Thank you again for reacting to The Crow.

Amazing to look back how much this film also inspired sooo many other films. Chad Stahelski was Brandon Lees stuntman in this movie who would then later go on to direct all 3 John Wick movies

I'm a massive fan of both Bruce & Brandon Lee & this film is an all time classic. I've dressed as Eric Draven 3 times for Halloween since this film came out, more times than any other character, with Michael Myers a close second. Imagine a crossover movie where the Crow fights Myers to avenge his death, that would be sick! Tell me you wouldn't watch the shit out of that.

0:50 - They had to use creative shadowing and stunt doubles to finish the film. For example, the scene at the tower with the cat and the little girl (and they hug), it was a stunt double whose face was covered in the shadows and his back is shown on camera.

The comic series didn't concentrate on character development or, for that matter, a real story arc either. The author was working out his issues after losing his fiance and The Crow was essentially equal parts love letter and revenge fantasy more than it was an actual story. It's beautiful in its way. The movie is a lot different and a lot more stylized -- but I think it retains a lot of the same spirit.

The idea wasn't so much to remake this movie as it was to do a more faithful adaptation of the comic. Which, in my opinion, is the best way to do it. Now if only they can get the green light from the studio.
