There’s a clever little callback in the early part of the movie. At Bilbo’s house Dori offers Gandalf tea, but Gandalf asks for wine instead. But in Fellowship of the Ring, when Gandalf arrives in Bag End, Bilbo offers him WINE, but Gandalf asks for TEA instead. Both in book and movies.

The oldest dwarf (white hair and beard) is Balin. If you remember, he was the Lord of Moria in LOTR trilogy. The fellowship found his tomb: "Here lies Balin, son of Fundin". And the book who took Gandalf from a dwarf´s hands, this one was Ori, another of these dwarves.

@@RibeyesteakSachertorte Not really. I guess they wanted him younger for the movies so he could fit the hero/warrior role better. In the books he has white hair and a white beard and he's more of a businessman type character rather than a hero/warrior.

As a LotR nerd obsessive, I had my share of problems with these movies. Seeing it through the eyes of less encumbered peoples has definitely softened those concerns. The appreciation for the details, lore and characters shows me that I was often too eager to deal out death and judgement. I'm going to enjoy watching these with you ✌️✌️✌️

Gandalf's words in the beginning actually helped me deal with some of the differences compared to the book; "All great tales deserve embellishment!" How often has a legend passed from person to person, changing just a little each time? It's the way of stories that each new storyteller puts his own small twist on it, and so I don't mind so much that The Hobbit (movies) have many differences and/or additions as opposed to The Hobbit (book). I love these movies and will rewatch them many times

Balin, Ori, and Oin, where in the Lord of the Rings... just not alive ....unfortunately. When the Fellowship goes to Moria, Oin's body is among the dead where the "watcher of the water" (evil octopus thing), Balin was shot by an Orc/Goblin arrow and placed in the Tomb Gimli weeps at, and Ori was the body next to Balin's tomb holding the journal. That is also one of the reasons Gimli is so set on going to Moria. He had not heard any news from Moria in a long time and wanted to know what happened to his kin. That is why he is also so emotional when he sees Balin's tomb. Gimli also wanted to be apart of this adventure with his father Gloin, but he was deemed "too young" by dwarf standards.

Years ago, I read LOTR first and thought it was wonderful. Two years later, I read The Hobbit and was very disappointed - for the same reason that people are disappointed with this Hobbit trilogy: TH was written in the 1930s for Tolkien's very young children and LOTR, when it came out, was not a children's book but was written for adults. It had great depth of feeling, demanded that you think and the language was very beautiful but also very poetic and sometimes difficult to understand. In contrast, TH is very simple, most of the characters are not as well developed and a short book has been stretched out to cover 3 films - but not as much as you would think because Peter Jackson searched through all the extra material Tolkien wrote as background information for his Hobbit story and added these bits to his films. Finally, PJ had to take over the production of the film after del Toro backed out at the last minute. He just didn't have the time to complete the trilogy like he did LotR. For this reason, I really, really think you ought to watch the extended edition of the final film in the trilogy because it just wasn't ready to go into theatres when the time came and viewers are a bit bemused as to what is happening when the battle is fought. The extended edition, containing all the material that PJ finally managed to complete, explains far more and is more satisfying. Thank you for your reaction which is excellent so far.

I was unable to get the extended edition of LOTR but when The Hobbit came out I made sure I got the extended edition. Each movie has like 9 hours of behind the scenes on the DVD box sets. The major alteration to the story is Azog, as he is in all three movies. Azog actually was slain in the battle outside Moria, and Bolg was the main orc in the book. Orcrist and Glamdring are both supposed to glow blue, but they didn't have Glamdring glow in LOTR.

It's more like that LOTR had lots of book content cut off (because it's a truly massive book) like in the end missing liberation of the Shire and Hobbit has some parts added from the Appendixes and other Tolkien sources. Of course there is also "artistic and theatrical alterations" and added characters and so on but that is a different thing ;)

Just a little information about the rings of power and the dwarves. The Seven "Seven Rings" redirects here. For the Ariana Grande song, see 7 Rings. Sauron recovered the Seven Rings from information provided by Celebrimbor, and gave them to the leaders of the seven kindreds of the Dwarves: Durin's Folk (Longbeards), Firebeards, Broadbeams, Ironfists, Stiffbeards, Blacklocks, and Stonefoots,[4] though a tradition of Durin's Folk claimed that Durin received his ring from the Elven-smiths.[T 15][T 1] Over the years, Sauron was able to recover only three of the Seven rings from the Dwarves. The last of the three was seized from Thráin II during his captivity in Dol Guldur. Gandalf recounts to Frodo that the remaining four were consumed by dragons.[T 6] Before the outbreak of the War of the Ring, an envoy from Sauron attempted to bribe Dain II Ironfoot of the Lonely Mountain with the three surviving rings and the lost realm of Moria in exchange for information leading to the recovery of the One Ring, but Dain refused.

I use a little 'math trick' to remember the Dwarves names: There are 2 sets of 3 and 3 sets of 2. Each set rhymes. Dwalin/Balin. Kili/Fili. Oin/Gloin(Gimili's father). Bifur/Bofur/Bombur. Nori/Dori/Ori.

Hi there, newcomer to the channel here, about to dive into your LotR videos and excited to see how you like them too. When you said dragons like treasure before the film showed it, I was like "Yes! She gets it!" I will say for The Hobbit extended editions, Part 2 and 3 have certain scenes and characters that are lifted from the book that shore up the films' narrative, even with all the extra non-book stuff.

Gandalf picks Bilbo to help because, like he explains to Thorin, Hobbits are basically unknown to the different people and beast of Middle Earth. Hobbits don't venture from the Shire....and the Elves of Rivendell and Rangers (men of Numenor) help protect the lands from those that might look to harm/subjugate the Hobbits. Plus, Hobbits are super tiny, and Gandalf believes they are stronger/tougher than what your eyes will tell you. Gandalf can sense that Bilbo has a good heart, and is brave, and kind, and his loyalty to friendship is strong. So picking a person that can sneak around, be small, and is unknown to others outside of the Shire, and someone that will see the job through.... that was why I think he picked Bilbo. And Bilbo is from the Took family tree, and the Tooks were a bit wild for Hobbits lol.

I was one of the fans disappointed in the Hobbit movies, but there's a lot to love too. Ian McKellen did an amazing job balancing the serious Gandalf the White Wizard from LOTR with the goofier lower-case wizard from The Hobbit. (You'll see if you read the books but basically Hobbit was a story for the author's kids, and when they asked him for a sequel it got out of control 😂) If you want an excellent lowdown on the production issues, Lindsay Ellis has videos that I cannot recommend highly enough.

Peter Jackson should have cut at least an hour or two from this story, and there were things that should not have been done; I dislike his portrayal of Radagast the Brown and the silly rabbit sled, and Dune sand worms had no place in the story. Despite that, I do think the story was beautifully filmed, and the casting was perfect, it is just too long and all of the added scenes were unnecessary and at times tedious. Hopefully he will make a more concise Director’s Cut in future.
