So, this isn't depicted in the movies (not even in the extended editions) but rather in the deleted scenes, but the reason why there is animosity between the elves of Mirkwood and the dwarves of Erebor is because the jewels that the elf king, Thranduil, had brought them were his beloved wife's after she had died. He had asked for their help in restoring the jewels but the dwarf king, Thror, was thought to have been so proud of the accomplishment that he wanted to keep them instead. So, Thranduil, angered by this action, cut all ties with the dwarves.

1:20:26 Chi asks the question that people troll criticize the Lord of the rings/Hobbit movies over. 😂 “Why didn’t the Eagles fly them where they needed to go?” The answer is: the Eagles don’t interfere in the wars of Middle Earth. They’re not air taxis and are also a very proud race and even though it was never shown in the movies they were capable of speech and only help Gandalf as a favor for saving their Eagle chieftain before the events of The Hobbit. The Eagles also did not trust the other races of Middle Earth, particularly Men, who would shoot arrows at them for stealing livestock.

Having the Eagles, who are possibly the last of their kind, fly into Mordor would be a horrible idea. In a best case scenario, they would still be sacrificing their lives to destroy the ring, & in a worst case scenario, they would all die just to deliver it to Sauron. Having the Eagles just do a flyover Mordor makes about as much sense as sending Ents to attack the Black Gate. Like, it might work, but more likely they would be dying for nothing

@sawanna5084 ай бұрын
Small addition: Also the eagle who helps Gandalf to escape after Saruman's betrayal is the eagle chieftain himself who is just passing by. If I remember right him and the other eagles are send to the battle by the god Manwe himself so the heros ahd to earn that. The eagles in the Hobbit are not the same they are distant desendance and in the book they only help out because they are living close by and don't like orks. They are not summoned by Gandalf or sent by Galadriel. Also the Wargs are differnt too. They are a species with there own language. They would fight on the side of evil especially in the Hobbit but the orks would not ride on them.
@nodak814 ай бұрын
Saying the Eagles didn't interfere in the affairs of Middle Earth is the same excuse the Elves give. Except that just like the Elves, the Eagles would either be dominated or destroyed by Sauron if he was allowed to obtain the ring. His entire goal was to "dominate all life". The wars of Middle Earth very much concerned the Eagles, whether they thought so or not. They also could have flown into Mordor under the cover of night or rain clouds and been in and out of the mountain before anyone had time to react.

Basically, the eagles are very intelligent and have their own things going on, and most of the time when they show up its as a favor for Gandalf. Goblins are a subrace of orcs in LOTR. Usually in fantasy they are some of the weakest of the monster foes, that can still be dangerous in large groups. In Pathfinder and D&D, goblins belong to the subgroup of creatures called goblinoids, which also includes hobgoblins(bigger, smarter and stronger cousins, about the size of orcs) and bugbears (large hairy goblinoids, who somewhat resemble twisted humanoid bear/hobgoblin hybrids).

7:10 "Is that, like, precious? Spoons?" In modern English (at least in the U.S.), the word "silverware" may be used to refer to any eating utensils. However, historically, the word was quite literal. Metal eating and serving utensils were often made from or coated with silver. Since silver is a precious metal, sets of those eating and serving utensils could be quite valuable, so the theft of all the spoons could be quite substantial! (There's a related term -- "born with a silver spoon in your mouth" -- which means someone was born into a wealthy family.)

The blade that Radagast gives them, from Dol Guldur, was the blade from the which King from LotR, it was buried inside the sealed tomb, the fact that they find it outside, means that the tomb has been opened...I hope that helps to clarify some little things here and there! :)

40:59 It's explained better in the books, but there are two magical realms: Rivendell, maintained by the elf Elrond; and, Lothlorien, maintained by Galadriel. They each bear one of the three elven rings which gives them the power to maintain and sustain their realms in perfect beauty and sanctity without spoil from any evil influences. Think of the contrast shown in the influence that the tower of Dol Guldur has over its surroundings in Mirkwood, or, later, that the tower of Barad-dûr has over Mordor, to see the concept. 45:40 Before the Saxons were conquered by Charlemange and England was conquered by William and the Norse were converted to Catholicism, and the Latin alphabet made the standard in which all western European languages would be written, the northern Germans wrote their languages using a type of script called Runic. So, Tolkien created his own type of writing system for the Dwarves that he called Dwarf runes. And Moon Runes are a type of magical Dwarvish writing that can only be seen by the light of the moon and only at certain times.

"The Hobbit" was a children's story that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote to entertain his kids before the start of World War II. The story just came to him because he wrote the first line of the book ""In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit" absentmindedly on a scrap of paper. He literally said the word hobbit just popped into his head and he thought what is a hobbit? What would a hobbit do? From that humble beginning he elaborated on what type of folk Hobbits were and introduced us to the polite, (mostly) cheerful, but secretly capable & adventurous Bilbo Baggins. He was able to bring in Dwarves, Elves and Orcs and other magical creatures/characters into the story. The fairly short book was a pretty big success when released. The film version has that childern's story plus a number of histories/scenes from the Appendices of "The Lord of the Rings" that made it possible to flesh it out into a trilogy. More films = More $$$. Tolkien had been writing a massive made up history about Middle Earth with Elves, Dwarves, Men, Orcs, etc. for many years starting at the end of World War I. He wrote this story mainly because he was busy inventing the languages/alphabets of the different races which fascinated him as a professor of Philology at Oxford. However, he hadn't thought of Hobbits until he wrote his successful children's story. In the 1950s, his publisher asked him if he had any other Hobbit stories, so Tolkien switched attention from his massive world building epic and created the more manageable high fantasy story of "The Lord of the Rings" which was set in the Third Age of Middle Earth. It's popularity started out somewhat slowly, but by the 1960s it became even more famous especially when paperback editions were published. Many students of the time wore buttons with the phrase "Frodo Lives" and loved discussing the books with their friends and re-reading them. Some even wrote Professor Tolkien which I bet cut into his writing/free time since he answered a lot of correspondence, being the gentleman he was. He never published his "Complete History of Middle Earth" before he died. His eldest son, Christopher took over all the many variations of the stories he had been writing, editing/re-writing since 1917 and edited together "The Silmarillion". That book covers the creation of of the world by Eru and his angels, the Valar. It spans the 1st - 3rd Ages (up to the point "The Lord of Rings" started). It is sort of a combination of a Myth and History book and you learn how the Elves were created first, then followed by the Dwarves and Men, and the rebellion of one of the Valar, Melkor, who is similar to Lucifer/Satan in the Bible, and the evil he (and later his lieutenant Sauron) brought and spread to the world.

In this case, yes. In more broad case, it is a "Nordic Rune". I will try to explain it briefly here for anyone that is not familiar with this type of things. Nordic runes were similar to Alphabet to old Scandinavians (Northern Europeans) in early middle ages (and maybe even before). Think Vikings, but that is very simplified explanation :) In modern fantasy (and in Tolkien), runes are usually associated with dwarves, as is their language (Irish/Scottish/Nordic), mainly because of the Scandinavian mythology that had lot of Dwarven references in it (For example they made the leash for Fenris, or the Odin's spear Gungnir). In Middle Earth, runes are practically letters of Dwarven language. EDIT: Someone said it is elvish rune in Tolkien. It might be, I am not that knowledgeable, but the overall theme with Dwarves and runes still fits, both for Fantasy and Games.

The eagles knew who to take because they're not just birds but thinking, talking creatures forming their own kingdom in Middle Earth, like the elves and dwarves, and they know dwarves from goblins/orcs. They have a king who is great friends with Gandalf, and in the book they hold conversations. They probably left this aspect of them out of the movies because big talking birds might have seemed silly. This also explains questions some people always ask about the eagles, like why they don't fly the dwarves all the way to the Lonely Mountain, and why they don't fly Frodo and the ring to Mount Doom. They're happy to help Gandalf out in an emergency, but they're not horses and don't just take orders. They let the dwarves stay in their high peaks and even gave them food so they could recuperate from their ordeal with the goblins, but that was the extent of their generosity. They would not risk their people flying dwarves cross-country, and of course if they flew to Mordor there would be no secrecy and they would have been shot down before they got halfway to Mount Doom.

These are those three troll statues that Frodo runs across in the Lord of the Rings films. This sequence shows us how they came to be statues.

I know that this movie came out after the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the book, The Hobbit, was published first. Also, it's only one book, while the Lord of the Rings is 3 books. It was surprising when they decided to make 3 movies out of The Hobbit. The book isn't as long as any of the LotR books.

I know people tend to not like this movie as much but I think it does a good job of capturing the spirit of the book. It's a sort of silly fairy tale you'd here from your grandpa at bedtime.

1:15 "F means food" 😂 Apparently the symbols in the book are different from what's shown here. Maybe the film writers changed it to an F to mean food. But originally it was in a made up runic language called "Cirth" and it meant Burglar, Danger (excitement), and Reward (a diamond). Tbh, I hadn't known that from the book series, and I'm not sure what the F means in the movie version.

The three trolls that turned to stone were in the first Lord of the Rings movie. Frodo and friends passed by there.
